At the peak of her international career, Maria Enders (Juliette Binoche) is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years ago. But back then she played the role of Sigrid,
an alluring young girl who disarms and eventually drives her boss
Helena to suicide. Now she is being asked to step into the other
role, that of the older Helena. she departs with her assistant (Kristen Stewart) to rehearse in Sils Maria; a remote region of the Alps.
A young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal (Chloe
Grace Moretz) is to take on the role of Sigrid, and Maria finds herself on the other side of the mirror, face to face with an ambiguously charming woman who is, in essence, an unsettling reflection
of herself.

scared for his loved ones, and fearful of death on the prowl, what can
he do except give up his freedom and free will, and hand these treasures over willingly to a trustworthy person in exchange for deceptive
guarantees of security, social protection, or even of an illusory community?...” - Andrey Zvyagintsev - Director’s Statement.

For the last 40 years, the photographer Sebastião Salgado has been
travelling through the continents, in the footsteps of an ever changing
humanity.
He has witnessed the major events of our recent history ; international
conflicts, starvation and exodus. He is now embarking on the discovery of pristine territories, of the wild fauna and flora, of grandiose
landscapes as part of a huge photographic project which is a tribute
to the planet’s beauty.
Sebastião Salgado’s life and work are revealed to us by his son, Juliano,
who went with him during his last travels, and by Wim Wenders, a
photographer himself.
WEDNESDAY 3 JUNE
Nepal Earthquake Fundraiser for Thelma and Louise Expeditions.
BYO Picnic, rug or chair. Gates open 5:30pm. Botanic Gardens Edge Hill.
Help us support Thelma and Louise Expeditions, a local fundraising group who have a terrific record supporting remote
villages in Nepal. Unfortunately the earthquake has destroyed much of what they have been able to build but their network
of supporters on the ground in Nepal’s outer villages are well placed to provide immediate assistance. All they need is more
funding. Come and help us raise as much money as possible with our 2015 pre-season launch of STARRY NIGHT PICNIC
CINEMA. Entry is “free” which means you are free to Pay What You Can at the door. ( Folding money is so much easier for
our volunteers to count but all contributions are valued.) There’ll be popcorn for sale and chances to win prizes.
OH and there’s the film. What else could it be?

Tangerines is a story of awakening humanity in the midst of violence, told with intimacy and elegance by Georgian film director and
screenwriter Zaza Urushadze.
Nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best
Foreign Language Film in 2015.
Tangerines is the spare yet haunting tale of an older Estonian man
who cares for two wounded soldiers from opposite sides of the 1990sera war in Georgia.
The fighters vow to kill each other when they recover, but their extended period of recovery has a humanizing effect that might transcend ethnic divides. Set against a beautiful landscape defiled by war,
this poetic film makes an eloquent statement for peace.

COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER SCREENING
ISOLATED started out as a surfing documentary, turned into a
quest for peace, and started an initiative.
The people involved with this film went looking for untouched
territory and what they found were cries for help that had been
silenced.
The dangers they faced that were shown in this documentary only
show a portion of what they encountered in their travels.
They risked their lives to film the “unfilmable” and what they discovered pushed them to try and bring peace to some new found
friends because of a request that changed their lives forever.

the tumultuous world of 1970’s Italy.

pervasive influence the Cosa Nostra holds over the everyday lives of
his family and community as he commences a life-long romantic pursuit of beautiful classmate and neighbour Flora.

Samba opens with an impressive winding single shot that positions us
right in the middle of a high-class wedding reception, and then tracks
back to the kitchen where we meet our eponymous protagonist, who’s
sweating away scrubbing the dishes. It’s a telling way to open a film
about a refugee, whose dreams – to become a chef, to stay in France –
are always just out of reach.
Despite its urgent and topical subject matter, this story comes cloaked
in charm and humour, as is to be expected from co-directors, Eric
Toledano and Olivier Nakache, who delivered the 2011 smash hit,
The Intouchables. The comedy’s a little more nuanced here, but while
there’s humour to be mined, make no mistake – there’s rage simmering just below the film’s surface.

Featuring a career-best performance from the multi-talented Viggo
Mortensen and a superb original soundtrack by Nick Cave and
Warren Ellis, FAR FROM MEN is a gripping tale of morality and
friendship set during the Algerian War, against an unforgiving
mountainous landscape.
Based on a story by Albert Camus, writer/director David Oelhoffen’s masterful, breathtakingly- shot drama bears all the hallmarks
of a classic frontier western, yet carries strong contemporary resonances.
