Armed Forces Entertainment has
joined forces with Country Music
singer Ayla Brown and Hope for the
Day motivational speakers Shayla
Rivera and Jonny Boucher to raise
awareness during National Suicide
Prevention Month.
Hope For The Day’s vision is to
bring communities together in order
to shed light on the unfortunate topics of depression and suicide, while
reducing suicide rates, inspiring and
empowering those who need help, to
get help.
Their wish is to share the deeply
personal connection creativity can
have in fostering an environment of
positive change to the suffering. They
view art and music as a highway to
the heart; two things that have allowed humanity to express our emotions for millennia.
Ayla Brown is an American country music recording artist and a contestant on American Idol, season 5 in
2006, she placed in the top 16. Shortly
after the season’s conclusion, Brown
attended Boston College on a full basketball scholarship, and graduated in
2010 with a communications degree.
She is the sixth leading scorer in
Massachusetts basketball history,
male or female, a two-time Gatorade
Player of the Year, and was named
the top female basketball player in
Massachusetts.
Recognized as a pioneer and entrepreneur, Brown founded and owns
her own record company, Ambient

September is National Suicide
Prevention Month. The theme for this
year’s observance is BeThere — your
action could save a life.
The Department of Defense
Suicide Prevention Programs focus on
minimizing suicidal behavior by training
Service members, leaders, Department
of Defense civilians and family members
to recognize signs of suicidal behavior,
intervention strategies and how to refer
individuals for care. According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention,
several risk factors make suicide more
likely. They include: having depression
or severe anxiety; alcohol or substance
abuse; having a serious medical
condition or pain; experiencing a
highly stressful event such as loss of a
loved one, financial trouble or trouble
with the law; prolonged stress due to
relationship conflicts, harassment or
bullying, or unemployment; exposure
to another person’s suicide or to graphic
accounts of a suicide; and access to
lethal means during a time of increased
risk.
People who die by suicide usually
show some indication of immediate risk
before attempting to kill themselves.
A suicide always leaves behind
questions to loved ones, family, friends
and co-workers. What could I have
done to help?
Recognizing warning signs can help
save a life. They include talking about
wanting to kill themselves, buying a
gun or hoarding medicine, talking
about a suicide plan, feeling hopeless,
feeling trapped in an intolerable
situation, feeling humiliated, losing
interest in things, becoming socially
isolated, acting irritable or agitated, or
showing rage.
The loss of any member of the
community is a tragedy regardless of
the reason and can have a profound
impact on overall readiness. Through
leadership, education, and respect for
each other, we can reduce or eliminate
the stigma associated with suicide and
help-seeking behaviors.
Ensuring prompt access to quality
health care is an essential component
to the approach to suicide prevention.
Remember the acronym
ACE
A - Ask the person if he/she is
thinking about suicide
C - Care for that individual by
expressing concern about him/her
E - Escort them to a behavioral
health clinic or hospital emergency
room for evaluation and intervention
Do not leave that person
alone!
Intervention may also include the
use of more advanced skills by trained
personnel such as an be chaplains,
family advocacy program workers and
medical providers, whose primary
duties involve assisting people who are
more susceptible to suicidal ideation.
According to Chaplain (Lt. Col.),
Peter O. Ferris, USAG Stuttgart Deputy
Command Chaplain, Chaplains are
often the first place people go when life
doesn’t make sense. This is especially
true where the Chaplain Corps has
historically been about the “care of
souls”, which carries over in the three
core competencies of the U.S. Army
Chaplain Corps to Nurture the Living,
Care for the Wounded, and Honor the
Fallen.
“The Community needs to know
this is an all hands effort, which is why
training facilitators and gatekeepers
are not limited to the Chaplain Corps,”
said Ferris.
“To borrow an old saying, ‘everyone
is a safety officer’ in terms of getting
Service members, family members,
and authorized DOD civilians the help
they need.”
Suicide Awareness training is held
during the monthly-required annual
training (RAT) at Patch Theater every
month, and other venues by request
based on availability by Chaplains.

September is recognized as
National Preparedness Month which
serves as a reminder that we all must
take action to prepare, now and
throughout the year, for the types of
emergencies that could affect us where
you live, work, and travel.
Disaster Planning
Disaster can strike quickly and
without warning. Families can and
do cope with disaster by preparing
in advance and working together as a
team. Knowing what to do is your best
protection and your responsibility.
Learn more about Family Disaster
Plans by contacting USAG Stuttgart

What to tell children
Four Steps to Safety
There are four basic steps to
developing a family disaster plan:
1.
Find out what could happen
to you. By learning what your
risks may be, you can prepare for the
disaster most likely to occur in your
area. Ask the following:
•What type of disasters are
most likely to happen in your
community?
•How should you prepare for each?
•Does your community have a
public warning system?
•What about animal care after
disaster?
•If you care for elderly or disabled
persons, how can you help them?
•What are the disaster plans at your
workplace, your children’s school
or day care center, and other
places where members of your
family spend time?
2.
Create a Family Disaster Plan.
Once you know what disasters
are possible in your area, talk about
how to prepare and how to respond.
Make checklists of steps you can
take with your family. Here is how to
create your Family Disaster Plan:
• Meet with your family and discuss
why you need to prepare for
disaster.
• Discuss the types of disasters that
are most likely to happen. Explain
what to do in each case.
• Pick two places to meet:
• Right outside of your home in case
of a sudden emergency, like a fire.
• Outside of your neighborhood
in case you can’t return home.
Everyone must know the address
and phone number of the meeting
locations.
• Develop an emergency
communication plan. In case family
members are separated from one
another, have a plan for getting back
together.
• Ask an outside contact, relative or
friend to be your “family contact.”
Your contact should live outside of
your area. Everyone must know the
contact’s name, address, and phone
number.
• Discuss what to do if authorities ask
you to evacuate. Make arrangements
for a place to stay and/or learn about
shelter locations.
• Be familiar with escape routes.
Plan several escape routes in case
certain roads are blocked or closed.
Remember to follow the advice of
local officials during evacuation
situations. They will direct you to
the safest route.
• Plan how to take care of your pets.
3.
Complete your checklists. In
clude the following items on
your checklists:
•Emergency telephone numbers
(fire, police, ambulance,
etc.). You may not have time
in an emergency to look up
critical numbers 112 or the
MP desk at DSN: 430-5262/
civ.0711-680-5262.
•Teach all responsible family
members how and when to turn
off the water, gas, and electricity at
the main switches or valves.
•Check if you have adequate
insurance coverage.
•Install smoke alarms on each level
of your home, especially near
bedrooms.
•Get training from the fire
department on how to use your
fire extinguisher (A-B-C type),
and show family members where
extinguishers are kept.
•Conduct a home hazard hunt.
During a disaster, ordinary objects
in your home can cause injury or
damage. Anything that can move,
fall, break, or cause a fire is a
home hazard. Look for electrical,
chemical, and fire hazards. Inspect
your home at least once a year and
fix potential hazards.
•Stock emergency supplies and
assemble a Disaster Supplies Kit.
•Keep a smaller Disaster Supplies
Kit in the trunk of your car.
•Keep a portable, battery-operated
radio or television and extra
batteries.
•Take a Red Cross first aid and CPR
class on Panzer Kaserne.
•Find the safe places in your home
for each type of disaster.
•Make two photocopies of vital
documents and keep the originals
in a safe deposit box. Keep one
copy in a safe place in the house,
and give the second copy to an
out-of-town friend or relative.
•Take inventory of your home,
garage, and surrounding property.
• Tell children that a disaster is something that happens that could hurt
people, cause damage, or cut off
utilities such as water, telephones, or
electricity but there are many people
who can help them.
• Give examples of several disasters
that could happen in your community and help them recognize the
warning signs.
• Teach children how and when to call
for help, and who to call in case they
are separated from the family in an
emergency.
• Explain that when people know
what to do and practice in advance,
everyone is better able to handle
emergencies.
• Have older children take a first aid
and CPR course too.
Plan how to take care of your
pets
• If you must evacuate, it is best to take
your pets with you. However, pets
(other than service animals) may not
be permitted in public shelters.
• Contact hotels outside of your immediate area to check their pet policies.
• Ask friends, relatives, or others if
they could shelter your animals.
• Prepare a list of boarding facilities and veterinarians who could
shelter animals; include 24-hour
phone numbers. Keep the list of “pet
friendly” places and phone numbers
with your disaster information and
supplies.
• Carry pets in a sturdy carrier and
have identification, collar, leash, and
proof of with your portable pet disaster supplies kit. Have a current photo
of your pets in case they get lost.
•As a last resort, if you absolutely
must leave your pets behind, prepare an emergency pen in the
home that includes a three-day
supply of dry food and a large container of fresh water.

Assembling the supplies you might
need following a disaster is an important
part of your Family Disaster Plan.
Involve Children in Disaster
Preparedness.
Ask children to help you remember
to keep your kits in working order.
Children might make calendars or
posters with the appropriate dates
marked on them. Ask children to think
of items that they would like to include
in their own Disaster Supplies Kit,
such as books or games or appropriate
nonperishable food items.

The Wild Life — On a tiny exotic island, Tuesday, an
outgoing parrot lives with his quirky animal friends
in paradise. However, Tuesday can’t stop dreaming about discovering the world. After a violent
storm, Tuesday and his friends wake up to find a
strange creature on the beach: Robinson Crusoe.
Tuesday immediately views Crusoe as his ticket
off the island to explore new lands. Likewise,
Crusoe soon realizes that the key to surviving on
the island is through the help of Tuesday and the
other animals. It isn’t always easy at first, as the
animals don’t speak “human.” Slowly but surely,
they all start living together in harmony, until one
day, when their comfortable life is overturned by
two savage cats, who wish to take control of the
island. A battle ensues between the cats and the
group of friends but Crusoe and the animals soon
discover the true power of friendship up against
all odds (even savage cats).

TBLISI, Georgia – U.S. special

State Security Services of Georgia
participated in exercise Jackal Stone
2016, here during the first two weeks
of August.
The exercise was designed to stress
and build interoperability between U.S.
and Georgian counter terrorism forces
and interagency partners while providing mission command nodes the
opportunity to exercise their systems.
The exercise challenged the participants with counter terrorism scenarios
at both the tactical and operational level throughout the country of Georgia.
“This is an exercise that is simulating our response to a terrorist case
in a foreign country,” said Nicholas

international security challenges.”

Irakli Chimakadze, director Georgian

definitely emulate the U.S. planning and execution if a future crisis
emerges.”
A culmination of a year’s worth
of hard work and even more years of

Jackal Stone strengthened the ties and
capabilities of both partner nations.
“Jackal Stone 2016 was a year in planning, it involved hundreds of people

this will be very beneficial to all concerned,” said Berliner.

U.S. Army Europe
YAVORIV, Ukraine - What do you
do after someone gives you five field litter ambulances? If you’re the Ukrainian
armed forces you prepare to receive
some of the best training on how to
properly use these life-saving devices.
Soldiers assigned to 557th Area
Support Medical Company, 421st
Multifunctional Medical Battalion, 30th
Medical Brigade out of Germany arrived at the International Peacekeeping
and Security Center here Aug. 29 to
conduct a site survey. This will allow
them to effectively and efficiently train
19 Ukrainian students, Sept. 5-Sept. 16,
on the logistics of the FLA .
The ambulances, which are part
of the train-and-equip program with
Ukraine, were officially handed over to
the Ukrainian armed forces by Lt. Gen
Ben Hodges, commander of U.S. Army
Europe Aug. 27. The two-week course will consist of detailed training that will teach
the medical students, who recently
graduated from the inaugural Ukraine
Medical Curriculum Program, how
to properly maintain the FLA. There
will also be a driver’s training course
that will familiarize students with the
vehicle, and hands-on medical training
to acquaint the students with the medical equipment. The driver’s training portion of the
course will incorporate scenarios with
simulated casualties so the students receive hands-on training with the FLA
to ensure they are knowledgeable about
the vehicle and are capable of using the
medical equipment. “They have never worked with
FLA’s before and it’s important for them
to be proficient,” said Sgt. Esther Yu, a
medic assigned to 557th ASMC. “We
are showing them how we would treat
patients and what equipment we would
use in different scenarios.”
Yu will be one of the instructors for
the training and this is her first opportunity to train students on the vehicle,
but she isn’t too worried about the obstacles that lie ahead. “I know they recently graduated
from the course and will be able to pick
up the information really quickly,” said
Yu. “I’m not too worried about them
being unfamiliar with how we teach
and learning the tasks to standard.”
These vehicles provide mobility for
emergency situations and provide a
quick link between battlefield casualties and emergency services not available on the front lines of battle. It has
the capacity for four litter or six ambulatory patients in a fully insulated
compartment with a heating and A/C
system.
The FLA training is one more
example of developing trust by consistent military-to-military working
relationships. JMTG-U is part of the
train-and-equip program. Their primary focus is on direct training in the
near term while helping the Ukrainian
armed forces to build a sustainable and
enduring combat training center at the
IPSC. This training is one more example of how the U.S. is helping to build
Ukraine’s capacity for self-defense.
U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, the commanding general for United States Army Europe (USAREUR)
and Ukrainian Lt. Gen. Pavlo Tkachuk, commander of Ukraine’s Land Forces Academy speak with

forces in support of the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine, in Yavoriv, Ukraine, Aug. 27,
2016. Providing FLA’s is part of USAREUR’s efforts to develop trust with our partner nations through
consistent military-to-military working relationships. This is one more example of how the U.S. is

Installation access changes on the horizon for U.S. Army Europe
Visitors to U.S. Army installations in Europe may experience delays as U.S. Military Installations begin employing new equipment with advanced detection capabilities. — Photo by Kevin S. Abel,
USAG Stuttgart Public Affairs
By U.S. Army Europe
As you travel around Europe, you
are likely to see some increases in host
nation security efforts, as well as in
U.S. Army Europe’s garrison security
posture.
U.S. Army Europe’s Antiterrorism
Division would like to remind everyone that the command’s common goal
is to ensure it is postured to counter the
threat of terrorism and provide a safe
and secure environment for everyone.
You may see additional security
guards, Soldiers and military police in
and around U.S. Army Europe installations, more frequent and thorough
security checks and inspections, and
other random security activities. It is
the collective efforts of security professionals, Soldiers, civilian workers and
family members who help keep everyone safe.
Given the significant and persistent threat the world faces, one way
to execute the protection mission
is to take advantage of the newest
security-related technologies. Fielding
new equipment with advanced technology enhances the ability to detect
dangerous materials and improves the
quality of searches at access control
points and security checkpoints.
Some of these technologies are now
available at Army Europe installations.
U.S. Army Europe is employing
new equipment with advanced detection capability at installations throughout the region according to a force
protection specialist in U.S. Army
Europe’s Antiterrorism Division.
Coupled with expanded measures
designed to reduce the terrorist threat,
U.S. Army Europe’s security professionals are working closely with host
nation partners to maintain a robust
deterrence and response capability, the
force protection specialist explained.
“As we implement these new technologies, visitors to installations may
experience delays or other inconveniences when accessing our facilities,”
the force protection specialist said.
“However, we anticipate these delays
will be minimal, and short-term as we
adjust our procedures.”
The Antiterrorism Division recommends everyone consider building additional time into travel schedules to alleviate the possible effects of those delays.
Security starts with everyone’s involvement, such as remaining vigilant, reporting suspicious activity and
making prudent personal decisions.
Today’s operating environment has
changed and we must change with it —
fielding new technology and adapting
our security procedures are just one
aspect of keeping our personnel and
communities safe.
“Anyone stationed in Europe
is encourage to follow U.S. Army
Europe’s Antiterrorism Division on
Facebook and Twitter,” the force protection specialist said. “Army Europe’s
Antiterrorism Division regularly posts
information on upcoming protests and
demonstrations so people can avoid
the area, and we share other relevant
information and resources for keeping
you and your family safe while living
and traveling abroad.”

Sembach, Germany - On
Oct. 1, the USAREUR Registry
of Motor Vehicles is increasing
the vehicle registration fee in
Germany by $5 to $35 dollars.
Driver license fees are also going up to $20.
Licensing fees were last increased in 1986 and the registration fee was raised to $30
in 2006 to fund the change to
German license plates.
The increase is necessary
because the costs for personnel, supplies, data processing
and equipment have continually
grown over the years.
The registry is a supplementary mission non-appropriated
fund entity based in Sembach,
Germany. The fund does not
generate profits but must recover operational costs and
maintain fund solvency. The
fund has sustained losses for
the past three years and can no
longer absorb the losses without
increasing fees.

DATES & TIMES:
Sept. 2 to Nov. 6, 9 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.
LOCATION:
Ludwigsburg Palace Gardens, or
Blühendes Barock
The
pumpkin
festival
in
Ludwigsburg is the largest of its kind
worldwide. This year’s creations and
exhibit will be themed to transform
the Ludwigsburg Palace gardens into
a very peculiar circus ring. More than
450,000 pumpkins of over 600 different varieties will be artistically arranged in the shape of clowns, knife
throwers, wild animals and other circensian attractions.
Pumpkin-based foods and drinks
are another much appreciated part of
this event, and food creations are just
as unusual as the artwork. This is the
only place where you can savor not
just pumpkin soup, stew, and pie, but
also “Maultaschen,” spaghetti, burgers, strudel, candy, and even sparkling
wine, all made of pumpkin.
From Sept. 15 to Sept. 18, the
popular U.S. pumpkin carver Ray
Villafane and his team will be special
guests in Ludwigsburg for the 4th time.
Villafane’s amazing pumpkin sculptures aim at visualizing the history of
the Hubbard squash.
Another highlight in the vast program of side events is the paddling
competition among athletes using
giant carved pumpkins in lieu of canoes. This year, the so-called “pumpkin regatta” will take place on the castle pond on Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
This year, the traditional German
Championship pumpkin weigh-off
will be held Oct. 2, the European one
on October 9. Visitor might have the
chance to see a local masterpiece break
the current record weights of 812.5
and 1,054 kg, respectively.
Pumpkin carving sessions will be
held on the last two Saturdays before
Halloween: on Oct. 22 and 29 at 10 a.m.
The pumpkin exhibition is not illuminated, so visiting after dark is not
recommended.
Dogs are generally allowed

Mercedesstraße 50, 70372 Stuttgart
The Cannstatter Volksfest, locally
called “Wasen” from the name of its
fest grounds in the district of Bad
Cannstatt, is Stuttgart’s oldest and most
famous festival. It combines a beer festival of nine tents and an “alpine village”, the largest travelling funfair in
Europe, as well as a “peddler market”
with old-style German merchandise.
Wednesdays are “family days” with
reduced prices for rides, food and
parking throughout the fest. For more
information see http://cannstattervolksfest.de/en/service/families/.
The Cannstatter Volksfest has become the second largest beer festival
worldwide by building upon a long,
deep-felt history. It was founded by King
William I in 1818 to celebrate the first
good harvest after three years of famine
due to poor crops and a long war. For
this reason, the fest symbol is a huge
maypole surmounted by a cornucopia
of nature’s products – the so-called “fruit
column” that towers near the information stand in the beer tents’ area.
History lives on especially at the
first fest weekend in the “traditional
morning” on the first Saturday featuring traditional brass music and
songs around the “fruit column” at
11 a.m. – as well as in the impressive
historical parade through the streets
of Bad Cannstatt on the first Sunday.
Around 100 groups participate in the
parade organized by the Cannstatter
Volksfest Club beginning at 11
a.m. The club includes over 20,000
U.S. members, who usually send a
delegation to this event. For parade
route and further details, check http://
cannstatter-volksfest.de/en/volksfest/

Access to the fest grounds and
tents is free of charge. However, if you
are looking for a signature celebration
with roast chicken and beer mugs,
side by side with visitors from all over
the world, a little planning is required.

‘Get ready to fest:’ Cannstatt
By Carola Meusel
USAG Stuttgart Public Affairs Office
With Munich’s Oktoberfest and
Stuttgart’s Cannstatter Volksfest both
beginning this month, it’s time to start
thinking about what you’re going to
wear. Why not do as the locals do and
don the traditional dress, or “Tracht,”
consisting of a “Dirndl” for women and
“Lederhosen,” or leather breeches for
men.
The word Tracht is a form of the
Old High German word for “wearing,”
according to Olaf Schulze, chairman of
the Pro Alt Cannstatt Association and
historian.
While many people typically wear
Tracht in Munich during Oktoberfest,
the trend to dress up for the Cannsttater
Volksfest has grown in popularity over
the last five years.
Fact is that traditional dresses
were and still are worn throughout
various regions in Germany, as well as
Austria and Switzerland. Every country
or region features various designs
embedded in history, tradition and local
customs, according to Schulze.
It was in 1818 when the Volksfest,
or people’s fest, was held for the first
time at the Cannstatter Wasen fest
grounds. Following a three-year period
of bad harvesting, King Wilhelm I of
Württemberg hosted the event as an
agricultural fest for his subjects.
Back then, it was common to visit
the fest in the traditional dress of
the various regions of Württemberg.
As for Cannstatt, that mainly meant
farmers and vintners who either wore
their everyday wear (“Alltagsstatt”), or
“Sonntagsstaat,” meaning a more festive
interpretation of the traditional dress,
Schulze said.
Back then, the traditional outfit
consisted of leather knee breeches,
mainly for fishermen and tanners, or
woolen shorts for vintners and farmers.
Depending on the region, the short
breeches also were designed to protect
against heat, water and cold.
The Dirndl mainly served as
working garments for servants and
farmer’s wives. It was a simple garment
typically made of coarse cotton. The
Dirndl was also worn by the lady of the
house – with a slight difference – her
dress was made of finer materials, such
as linen or lace.
The basics, however, remained
the same: the Dirndl consisted of
the bodice, blouse, skirt and apron,

clothing of Alps’ peasants. It is hugely popular amo

according to Schulze.
Today’s tradition of wearing Dirndl
and Lederhosen mainly to fests and
special occasions changed its historic
context, since it was originally intended
for everyday life and work, according
to Schulze.
Dominik Henne, managing director
of Krüger Dirndl, one of Württemberg’s
largest traditional dress outfitters, can
relate.
“Today’s Dirndl and Lederhose
can be considered a fashionable outfit
borrowing from tradition,” Henne said.
“People are very flexible in their
personal taste and ways to wear their
Dirndl and Lederhosen,” he added.
Dirndl basics
Typically, the skirt starts at the waist.
The traditional skirt is full and long.
However, women can choose between
various lengths pending fashion and
personal taste, according to Henne.
The bodice is usually separate but
also can be sewn to the skirt. It comes
in various styles: high or low, round or
square necklines, embroidered with
ornaments or decorative ruffles and
lace. Typically, it’s fastened with ribbons,
buttons or hooks.
The blouse is short, usually ending
above the waist. In most cases, the
sleeves are short and puffed. The blouse
can be worn on or off the shoulder
depending on one’s taste.
The apron, formerly worn to protect
the skirt, is now a decorative accessory,
according to Henne. They come in all
colors, styles and fabrics: linen, cotton,
silk and lace.
According to Henne, the apron

color should always compliment the
respective Dirndl, or make a fashionable
contrast. Typically, aprons are sold with
the Dirndl outfit, but can also be bought
separately for mixing and matching.
“When it comes to colors, red, pink
and blue can be considered a classic,”
Henne said.
Trends also consists of floral prints
and patterns, as well as corresponding
hats to go with the Dirndl. The hats are
decorated with rhinestones and feathers.
Lederhosen or heart–shaped handbags,
as well as colorful satin ribbon necklaces
with pendants in various shapes –
hearts, pretzels or deer antlers – also are
a favored accessory. If the weather gets
cold, cardigans can also be worn with
any Dirndl, Henne said.
As for tights, nylons or cotton
tights work. For fashionistas, high heels
or ballet slippers make for a trendy
appearance.
Lederhosen basics
As for Lederhosen, the length varies
between above or below the knee.
The pants are mainly made of goat or
deerskin, the latter being the pricier
version. The embroidery varies between
green, beige or red. The fashion
conscious may prefer the latest trend:
breeches made of treated leather that
mimics decades of wear.
Leather suspenders with a chest
strap are a traditional accessory, as are
woolen hunter’s hats in gray, black or
green with boar bristle tassels, feathers
and pins.
The checkered shirt comes in various
colors, such as red, blue, green, orange,
pink or brown.
The current trend features white
shirts with collars turned up and the
top three buttons left open. The shirts
feature the traditional checkered fabric
on the elbows and inside the collars.
Prints and embroidery applications are
also popular, according to Henne.
As for shoes, Henne recommends
the traditional “Haferlschuh,” a robust
leather shoe with a heavily treaded sole
traditionally worn by workers in the
Alpine regions. The shoes are worn with
cotton or woolen socks or calf warmers.
A “Janker” jacket, or woolen vest,
can also be worn with any Lederhosen
outfit.

more about traditional dresses and the
Cannstatter Volksfest, the historian Olaf
Schulze offers English guided tours in
Bad Cannstatt.

Dirndl:
It’s recommended to take the entire
ensemble to a dry cleaner. If washing by
machine, ensure all ribbons, hooks and
accessories are removed. For best results
put the blouse, bodice, skirt and apron
in a laundry washing bag and use the
delicate or hand wash cycle.
Lederhosen:
To preserve and protect your
new Lederhosen, treat them with
waterproofing spray before ever wearing
them.
Lederhosen should never be
dry cleaned or laundered. Experts
recommend brushing the leather with
a soft brush. If you must, spot cleaning
with baby shampoo is recommended.
Use a wet cloth – warm water – with
a small amount of baby shampoo and
lightly dab.
After each wearing, especially after
being in a smoked-filled tent, make sure
to properly air your breeches. Hang
them outside in a protected area, so the
fresh air can do its magic. Stay away
from Febreeze.
How to tie your apron: Women…
it’s all about the bow
• Tying the apron on your right
side signals that one’s taken – either
married or in a serious relationship.
• Tying the apron on your left side
signals that you are unencumbered.
• If the bow is tied at the back,
this means the wearer is a widow.
• If you’re an “innocent” girl, tie the bow
in front, centered.
