WELCOME
W
elcome to the 44th edition of the annual Spring Desert 100 weekend. This event is being staged on the Wes
King Ranch near Odessa, Washington. This is a working cattle ranch and as such, we must do our best to
have as little impact as possible on this property. This is private property leased for the weekend from Wes
King, owner of the ranch, to be used only for the weekend of April 5th and 6th. Only those signed up for
an event may travel the grounds outside of the camping area. This property is not open for general play riding at any time.
We all know how hard it is to find an area suitable for an event like the Desert 100. Please respect the wishes of the
Stumpjumpers and Mr. King in regards to the property, so in future years we may have the possibility of continued use.
Please stay on the marked course at all times. We would like to have as little impact on the land as possible.
You may have questioned the Event Flyer in regards to bringing a clean motorcycle to the event. The reason is to
mitigate the possibility of introducing unwanted weeds onto the property. I might point out that in Nevada a clean vehicle,
whether bike or truck, is required because the BLM does not want plant seeds brought up from Arizona, California or
Mexico introduced into their desert.
As always, campfires are not allowed. Please clean up your camp and PIT area before leaving.
The Stumpjumpers want you to have an enjoyable weekend, but please remember that we are guests here. Treat this
property like it was your own front yard. You do not have to mow it, but leave it as you found it. Thank you and have a great time.

Jason Volberding
The Race Chairman, Michael Decker and Race Co-Chairman, Jason Volberding would like to acknowledge all
of the hard work and time invested by the SJMC Members. It is the individual and team efforts put forth by our
volunteers that make this event “The Greatest Off-Road Event in the Northwest”.

FLATOUT! April 5th & 6th, 2014
A Note from the Chairman
E
ach year as spring rolls closer I look forward to the
singular event that defines us as a club, The Desert
100. On behalf of the club, I offer a hearty THANK
YOU for your continuing participation. We put our
heart and soul into the Desert 100 so that everyone has a
great time and the weekend goes smoothly.
landowners, local law enforcement, county officials
and the generous business owners and citizens of
Odessa. The Desert 100 would not be where it is at today without their cooperation and support of all those
involved, especially the support of you, racers and
poker run participants.
In return, the Stumpjumpers donate a significant
portion of the proceeds to many different charitable
organizations, both locally and statewide, including
organizations that are fighting to protect our right to
ride.
With this in mind I urge everyone attending this
event to become involved with the Northwest Motorcycle Association. It is easy and inexpensive to become
a member and the more members that are involved,
the more influence the NMA has. If you own a dirtbike,
there is no excuse to not be a member…it is an organization that fights for what YOU want! You can find them this
weekend in the sign-up area or on the web to join as a
member. WWW.nmaoffroad.org
I hope everyone has a safe, enjoyable Desert 100. As
always, keep the wheels facing down and ride on.
Michael Decker
2014 Race Chairman
As you can imagine, the magnitude of this event takes
many months of planning, preparation, coordination with
STUMPJUMPERS MC Desert 100 April 5th & 6th, 2014 9
Who are the Stumpjumpers?
W
e are a family oriented, off-road trail riding motorcycle club that loves
to have fun. Promoting motorcycling and the safe use of motorcycles
is one of our main goals. We were founded in 1967 and have one of
the biggest driving forces in off road motorcycle events, in the Puget Sound
area. We promote many of the most well known off road motorcycle events
that enthusiasts look forward to each year. With the main purpose of the club
to have fun, we also have club play days on a monthly basis. Each month one
or more of our members put together an event exclusively for club members
and friends. With fun in mind, these events range from trail rides, poker runs,
camp outs, and occasionally a nice relaxing barbecue.
Club Sponsored Events
The World Famous Desert 100 - Since 1970 when this annual race began, the Desert
100, once known as Mattawa, has been the most prestigious off road race of the year.
In additon to the race, the Desert 100 weekend features the following events:
Family Poker Run - This is a fun event for the whole family and each year it
gathers hundreds of riders just looking to have a fun ride and great time.
Iron Man Poker Run - This is not for the faint at heart. Designed for the more
advanced rider, this event is much longer and harder than our family poker
run.
Dual Sport Ride - We also put on a very fun ride for those who have dual sport
bikes. People always look forward to these events knowing they are in for a fun
day.
Frost Bite Cross-Country Grand Prix - The White Knuckle of 2004 had such good
feedback that the Frost Bite was created to please the appetite of those who loved the
White Knuckle.
Golden Spike Hare Scrambles - This is one of the most well known Hare Scrambles
in the state. This event attracts some serious racers but most just come to have a very
fun time.
White Knuckle Cross-Country Grand Prix - Another well known race that features
some “character.”
Our Three Main Points are: HAVE FUN! HAVE FUN! HAVE FUN!
Monthly Club Meetings
Even though our monthly meetings are restricted to adults only, it is a great way to get
together and enjoy what every one of our members has to offer. This is where we plan
and organize our club events, but we also have a lot of fun in doing so.
When do we meet?
We meet on the first Wednesday of every month at 8:00 PM.
Where do we meet?
At the American Legion Hall in Mountlake Terrace. 22909 - 59th Avenue West.
Are Visitors Welcome?
Absolutely. If you are thinking of getting involved, please come to any of our meetings.
COME JOIN THE CLUB
If you are thinking of looking into a fun and friendly off road motorcycle club
then you owe it to yourself to come and check us out. Every member of the
Stumpjumpers Motorcycle Club are members for one reason, and that is to
have fun. Monthly meetings are for adult only, however the monthly play days
are for our families and friends of all ages. At the meetings, we plan activities
for the whole family. Trail riding, having fun, our families and motorcycles are
what we love the most, and not necessarily in that order.

to where I am and I want to get a picture of them.

GUTS on the RUN
by SARA REDFIELD
When I won the Desert 100 women’s class in 2008, I had no idea
that in a few short years my life would drastically change and I
would be diagnosed with a chronic, incurable disease.
Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract. There is no cure for Crohn’s and treatments are very expensive.
I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in August 2011 after being sick for
months. Less than 8 weeks later, I was undergoing surgery to remove several
inches of severely strictured intestine due to chronic inflammation. I spent a
week in the hospital and it was almost two months before I felt well enough
to be active again.
Since being diagnosed with Crohn’s, there are days where it is a challenge
just to get out of bed and head into work, let alone to get on my dirt bike and
head out for a long ride.
But there is hope. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America is very
active in raising money to fund key research into finding a cure and new
treatments. Guts on the Run is a 5 mile fun trail run/walk. All proceeds from
this event will go directly to the CCFA to help fund their efforts in finding
a cure to Crohn’s disease and other forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
For more information, please visit the Guts on the Run website at:
www.gutsontherun.com
My Bike Broke Down... Now What?
It
happens to the best of us from time to time: offroading can be tough on bikes and sooner
or later something breaks when you least expect it. While you should always be prepared
by carrying some simple tools and a few parts (spare spark plug, master link for your
chain, safety wire, etc) sometimes there is nothing you can do.
If that happens during the race or poker run, and you have no idea where you are, don’t panic!
A sweep rider will be along sooner than later. However, you need to realize that it is YOUR
responsibility to get your bike back to the pits/camp area. The sweep rider will be able to offer
some limited assistance to attempt to get your bike back up and running, but remember: their
primary mission is to patrol for, and respond to, injured riders.
Most likely the sweep rider will point you in the shortest direction back to camp, a checkpoint, or the nearest road access, and tell you to start pushing. That’s not as bad as it sounds,
though: even though the course is 50 miles long, you are usually pretty close to one of those
three at any time. The sweep rider will radio in your name, bib number, and the direction you’re
heading, and this information will be posted in camp. Let the people in your camp/pit know,
if you are not showing up when expected, to check the information board in the signup area.
Carry a cell phone with you if you can. If not then at least carry the phone number of somebody in camp that can send a truck to pick you up at the nearest egress point. A checkpoint is
always a good place to wait for your ride as they can all be accessed by a pickup fairly easily. However, no vehicles will be allowed on the course until it closed. If you are nice to the checkpoint staff
and offer to help out they will probably give you a ride back themselves if they have room.
While not recommended, if you absolutely have to ditch your bike somewhere and walk
back, you can get information on how to get to your bike after the course is closed by contacting SJMC personnel in the signup area. Pay attention to where you left your bike and take note
of the mile markers on the course! SJMC personnel can show you, on a map, the easiest way
to get your bike out.

2014 FLATOUT Desert 100
26 FLATOUT! April 5th & 6th, 2014
Team Wickstrand: Why Not Us?
W
e love the Desert 100. I
am on a mission to someday finish the Desert 100
with both of my young
sons. This mission started in earnest in
2011 when I was surprised that my 9
year old son Ben successfully tackled the
Ironman Poker Run riding his Yamaha
TTR-110. Unfortunately the next day in
the Desert 100 my day ended very early
with a few broken ribs and a punctured
lung. Despite this setback, it wasn’t long
after healing up that we started looking
forward to the 2012 Desert 100. Based on Ben’s success in completing the Ironman Poker Run course the year before I wanted
us to take on a new
challenge in 2012. As
the race got closer we
settled on the challenge: Let’s see if I
could complete the
entire Desert 100, riding side-by-side with
my then 10 year old
son Ben.
By the time April
2012 rolled around we’d upgraded Ben’s motorcycle from
the Yamaha TTR-110 to a KTM 65, mounted a 1.3 gallon
Acerbis auxiliary gas tank on the front forks above the
fender – I figured we’d need that much fuel to complete
the first 50 mile lap. Carrying so much gas on board that
tiny KTM
65,
Ben
earned the
nickname
“Fireball”
from our
f r i e n d
Tim. So we
showed up
in Odessa
with Ben’s
KTM 65,
his huge
e x t r a
gas tank
weighing
down the
front of his bike and making it awfully top heavy, and a couple
of Scala Riders so I could coach Ben throughout the race. We
had an amazing time in the 2012 Desert 100. Ben was such
STUMPJUMPERS a little kid back in 2012 that we took our
time and just enjoyed the ride. He was so
small back then he needed to take a lot
of breaks during the race. Along the way
Ben was passing riders stuck in the mud
and those poor guys who dumped their
motorcycles in the river…what they must
have been thinking seeing a little kid poking past them as they were trying to figure
out how to get their submerged bikes out
of the river! On the course Ben found a
dried out animal skull. He pulled off the
trail and stopped, picked it up, and stuffed
it in his CamelBak backpack. He figured it would make a nice
souvenir from the race. That was the kind of day we had out
there.
During one of
our
breaks
we
watched
Bobby Prochnau and David
Kamo come
flying past as
they lapped us
– it was awesome! Once
that happened
we took our
time riding in
to finish the
50-mile lap. As
other top riders continued
to stream past
I got a kick out
of how many
racers
were
yelling
encouragement
to Ben along way. I was incredibly proud of
Ben. All day, we didn’t come across anyone in
the race riding a bike as small as Ben’s KTM 65.
We missed the time cut-off to start the second
50 miles, so we rode up to the finishing stage
and as we did, Ben asked if I’d allow him to go
first so his name would be listed before mine
in the results. Of course! Watching Ben ride
across the stage was such a highlight. While we
were satisfied in completing 50 of the 100 miles in 2012, we still
fell short of completing our mission to have our names listed
next to each as father-son Desert 100 finishers.

Team Wickstrand:
S
o in 2013 we showed up again in Odessa, prepared and
with the same goal of finishing the entire 100 miles. We
upgraded Ben’s motorcycle in 2013 to a KTM 85, and again
used the Acerbis auxiliary gas tank to make it to the gas stop at
50 miles. We had a good start to the race, and throughout the
race Ben was passing people left and right. I was smiling under
my helmet thinking if only the people he was passing knew they
were getting passed by an 11 year old. After an uneventful 30
miles we were on a pace to complete the first 50 miles before getting lapped by the leaders, and then it all changed. Ben hit a rock
that kicked his back tire out and in a flash he was flying through
the air one way and his bike was tumbling end over end in the
other direction. The crash left Ben with an awfully sore knee, lots
of cracked plastic on his KTM, a smashed pipe, and a cracked
clutch cover. A Stumpjumper rode right up behind us after Ben’s
crash and stayed with us until he knew we were going to be OK.
At that point we decided to stop racing to make the time cutoff
and just ride it in nice and slow. Around the 40 mile mark we
stopped in a nice spot to watch the leaders come past us just like
we did in 2012. Again, we saw Prochnau and Kamo come flying
past and we cheered them on like crazy. After the leaders passed
we hopped back on our motorcycles and rode in to finish 50 of
the 100 miles for the second year in a row. Again, Ben asked to
finish just in front of me so his name would be listed just before
mine in the results. We were proud of what we accomplished, but
we were definitely left wanting to get that full 100 miles behind
us someday.
In 2013 we also introduced my 7 year old son Sam to racing in
Odessa on his Yamaha TTR-50 in the kids’ race. This weekend
was only the SECOND time Sam rode in dirt! Before the kids’

: Why Not Us?
race Sam’s riding was mostly limited
to our driveway and the road in front
of our house and one trip out to ride
in Mattawa. It turns out Sam was
determined, while at the same time
speed-challenged. Just the ride out to
the start was a long way for Sam. He
had car traffic building behind him
and a bunch of Stumpjumpers follow-
ing, and he was the last kid to arrive
at the starting area. Sam took so long
to get to the starting line that I missed
the start of his big brother Ben’s race.
So Sam’s race started and the kid next
to him hit a bush 15 feet out from the
starting line and came to a complete
stop. I’m thinking, “Hey Sam’s passed
one kid already - - that’s awesome!”
He was riding along and by the time
the winner had finished (along with
everyone else it turns out), Sam was
still out on the course with a long way
to go and a flotilla of Stumpjumpers
in tow making sure he was OK. No
one was rushing Sam, they were just
making sure he made it back safely
and encouraging him on along the
way. Sam crashed too many times to
count and more often than not when
he did fall, there was a Stumpjumper
or two right there to help him get his
bike upright, started, and pointed in
the right direction. By the time Sam
crossed the finish line there were no
STUMPJUMPERS other riders or parents present, just a handful of Stumpjumpers there to wave the checkered flag for Sam, cheer for him,
tell him how awesome he was, give him high fives, and make
sure he got his finisher t-shirt!
Before we left the finishing area I noticed Sam’s goggles
were all fogged up, and he was crying. I asked him why he was
crying. I thought maybe he hurt himself in one of his many
crashes. I was wrong. He simply said, “I’m just proud of myself
for finishing my
first race.” That’s
the emotion from
a kid who placed
almost last in his
class. He now
takes great pride
(and talks smack)
when it comes to
him beating the
handful of kids
who didn’t make
it the one lap he
was able to do.
Later that night
we saw Jerry Allen by the stage
and said hello,
told Jerry Sam’s
story, and Jerry
went and got a trophy for Sam. Then we took some photos of
Sam on the podium. Sam’s experience in 2013 won’t soon be
forgotten, and he’s now armed to bench race with the best of
them! I told Sam in the days leading up to that 2013 race that
“Just starting the race is winning.” Little did I know the kid

will probably be another few years before Sam is up to the skill
and speed level to attempt the 100 miles with me –and by that
time Ben will probably be mature and fast enough to tackle the
100 miles on his own. Ben’s goal is to someday finish in the top
10 in the Desert 100. Seeing as though he started competing
in the Desert 100 at age 10, he might just accomplish his goal
before too long. With the strength and speed Ben is gaining
every year, at this point I’ve resigned myself to NEVER having
my name listed before Ben’s in the Desert 100 results.
e love the story about Seahawks quarterback Russell
Wilson, whose late father taught him a powerful lesson and made a positive impact on him by always
asking Russell as a boy, “Why not you, Russell?” We’ve adopted
this as our own motto now and put our own spin on it. Can a 12
year old finish the entire Desert 100 riding alongside his Dad?
You bet, and why not us this year!?!? Someone has to finish
in the top 10. Why not you someday Ben? Can an 8 year have
more fun, crash less, and learn even more valuable lessons in a
one hour race about not giving up and maybe even place a few
positions higher in the process? Absolutely, and why not you
this year Sam!?!
I can only imagine how much work goes into organizing
the entire weekend. To all of you that contribute to successfully
organizing this event, I hope that when you hear stories like
Sam’s and Ben’s you’ll realize all of the hard work you put into
an event like this is really worth it and greatly appreciated by
the hundreds of families that come back to Odessa year after
year. Thanks to the Stumpjumpers for providing unforgettable
experiences. We hope everyone has a great weekend of riding
and racing. Be safe and have fun!
See you on the course!

S
o here we are at the 2014 Desert 100, ready for another
epic weekend with our friends! This year Sam, now 8
years old, will tackle the kids’ race again, this time on a
KTM 50 and hoping to improve on last year’s finish. Ben, now
12 years old, is showing up in Odessa on a different motorcycle
for the fourth time in four years: from a Yamaha TTR-110 in
2011, to a KTM 65 in 2012, to a KTM 85 in 2013 and now in
2014 he’ll tackle the 100 miles on a KTM 150 XC (with suspension lowered by 2” and a low seat so the bike isn’t too tall for
him). As a warm-up to the Desert 100 this year we will also have
competed in round three of the AMA National Hare & Hound
Series in Murphy, Idaho in late March. We are as prepared as
ever to complete the Desert 100 this year. In years past while we
enjoyed seeing Bobby Prochnau and David Kamo pass as they
lapped us, sorry guys but this year IS different! We’re hoping
our race pace is fast enough that we don’t see them ride past
us on our first lap! If we make the entire 100 miles this year,
GREAT! It will be a nice accomplishment for this Dad and his
12 year old son. If we don’t make the entire 100 miles this year,
there’s no doubt it will be another fun weekend of riding and
hanging out with our good friends Tim, Harry, and Zsolt. No
matter what happens, we will be back in 2015 to race it again. It

STUMPJUMPERS in BAJA!
B
ack in August, my husband, Travis, and I decided that
we wanted our 3rd trip down to Baja to be “special”...
meaning we wanted to hit the single track. Last year,
we rode the entire length of the peninsula from Ensenada to
Cabo, and in 2011 we did a northern loop. Both of those rides
consisted mainly of double track. But this year we wanted a
different kind of challenge. So I contacted Steve Corrie aka
Trackmaster, who we had traveled with in previous years, and
told him all
of the trails
that were on
my bucket
list. Fortunately, they
were also on
his bucket
list. So on
February
28th, a group of us from Washington met up in San Diego
where we would be reunited with our bikes and gear in the
middle of a torrential downpour. I thought we escaped the
rain when we left Washington, but apparently not.
W
e made our way to Ensenada where it continued to
downpour off and on throughout the night but everybody was excited for what the next 10 days would
bring. The next morning, we left Ensenada and headed south along the coast to Shipwrecks with a stop at
Coyote Cals for lunch. From there we headed into the
mountains up to Rancho Meling. The morning was a
bit wet, but as soon as we popped out onto the coast
there was blue sky and we didn’t see anymore rain until
we got to Meling. This made for perfect hero dirt and
we were all enjoying ourselves.
F
rom Rancho Meling, we headed to Jardines
in San Quintin. It was a short, easy day, and we had
plenty of time to hit Shito’s car wash to clean the mud
from the previous two days off of our bikes. While at
Jardines, we ran into Tim Morton from Baja Bound
Adventures and he gave Trackmaster some route ideas
for the next day which turned out to be pretty awesome!
W
36 e left Jardines before having breakfast, and
taking Morton’s advice, headed out to see
some Baja wildlife. We came to a huge hole
FLATOUT! April 5th & 6th, 2014
in the ground where the
ocean was flowing in and
out. Inside of the hole
was a family of seals playing, napping and going
about serious seal business. From there, we found
a fun trail that took us into
El Rosario where we had
breakfast at Mama Espinozas. After breakfast, we
headed up into the hills
and onto Catavina.
F
rom Catavina, we rode
to Bahia de Los Angeles via the Window Rock
trail. This trail is by far the coolest trail I have ever ridden in
the 10 years that I’ve been riding dirt bikes. The dirt was perfect that day and the
scenery was to die
for. Even the 3 miles
of what I call “special trail” at the end
going into La Gringa was a blast! That
section reminded
me of the mountain
riding we have in
Washington. I felt
right at home in the
single track. BEST RIDING DAY EVER! Everybody in the
group seemed to enjoy this trail.
F
rom Bahia de Los Angeles we
headed back to Catavina via the
22 Day trail. We had ridden the
section of the 22 Day trail between
BoLA and the highway in previous
years, but none of us had ever ridden the trail past the highway to the
Pacific. This became a goal. After
getting gas from our chase van at
the highway, we ventured off into
the unknown. The remainder of
the 22 Day trail was absolutely
amazing!!! I was in heaven and
feeling right at home in the technical single track. Everybody in our
group made it through with no
huge issues...just 1 flat tire about
a mile from the end of the single
track. From there we connected
by Sara Redfield
to a portion of the 1000
course and made it back
to the highway by Catavina about an hour after
dark. It was a great day
and we were all beat but
ecstatic at the same time.
T
he following day
was short but sweet
as we made our
way from Catavina to
Gonzaga Bay via Fred’s
Tractor trail. Of course
we stopped to say hola
to Coco. This was the
3rd time I’ve been to his
corner, but the first time
that he was there for me
to meet him. He’s kind of
creepy, but nice and I’m
glad I got to finally meet
a Baja legend. I did find
myself getting into a fight with a cactus in the wash on Fred’s
though and that was not fun! I’m pretty sure there is still cactus in my hands, arm and quad, but I guess
I’ll consider those souvenirs. T
he next two days were easy as we made
our way from Gonzaga to San Felipe and
then up to Mike’s Sky Ranch. On the way
to San Felipe we scoped out the start of the
Rock trail. This trail is on the menu for the
next trip. I hear it’s not very fun, but one of
those trails that you just have to do. We did
have the opportunity to meet another legend
in Gonzaga and get some trail advice from
him. Trackmaster has been obsessed with
finding a way up the Santa Maria wash so
he was quizzing Malcolm. I took some time
during low tide to hike the hill across from
Gonzaga Bay while Trav and Trackmaster
STUMPJUMPERS explored on the dirt bikes
and the other guys sat on the
beach.
F
rom Mike’s we headed out
to Kurt Caselli’s memorial
along the 1000 course. It was
very important to Trav and
myself to stop here. We were
working two of the KTM pits,
Pit 1 and Pit 16, during the
race and were both devastated
when we found out that Kurt
had not made it. From there,
we rode to where Pit 1 was and
relived the memory of seeing
Kurt come tearing into the pit,
getting gas, and then grabbing 4 gears within 50 feet. It was
very impressive to witness. Then we cut over to where Pit 16
was and relived the memory of waiting and waiting for Kurt
to come and then finally getting word that he had passed. I
think it was good for us to do this because it helped bring
closure to our hearts. The day ended with some sweet single
track that we took into Rancho Santa Veronica.
n the end, we rode roughly
1200 miles with an elevation gain of 75,788 feet...
which probably explains why
this years ride seemed much
more exhausting than last
year’s even though last year’s
ride was more mileage. I
cannot wait to get back to
Baja and explore some more
trails! Thanks Trackmaster
for the awesome ride! You’re
awesome!

54 FLATOUT! April 5th & 6th, 2014
Like our helmets, heritage is molded through a time-honored tradition of turning the unthinkable into
reality. For 60 years, Bell Helmets have been the choice of professionals, protecting the world’s greatest
athletes who refuse to accept the status quo. Their dedication to pushing human limits inspires us to
create the finest helmets on the planet, purpose built to break barriers. This dedication has made Bell the
most trusted name in helmets since 1954, innovating every single day to make the impossible possible.
