of the City of Central or the Central Community School District whose actions, efforts and service during 2012 have been significant, selfless, and

Last year's recipients were Wayne Leader and the young men and women of the Amite River Preservation Association. A Lifetime Citizenship
Award was given to Pete and Anna Marie Grissom for their many years of dedicated service running the Central Food Bank.
Barry Ivey, Scott Wilson Announce Candidacy
for District 65 State Representative
Barry Ivey, a conservative
businessman and community leader
from Central, today announced that
he will seek election to the Louisiana
House of Representatives in the
March 2, 2013 special election.
The vacancy in District 65 in East
Baton Rouge Parish will occur due to
the resignation of Representative Clif
Richardson, a respected leader in the
House.
"Clif Richardson and his family have
been devoted community leaders for
many years," Ivey said. "Julie and I
are praying for the Richardson family
and for Clif's speedy recovery."
Ivey is President of Pinnacle Precision Services, LLC, which provides
piping/mechanical services primarily to the nuclear power industry. Barry
and Julie Ivey have been married for 14 years and have four children.

I am a Councilman in a small town
and I have gotten myself in a jam.
Last month a local businessman
wanted to tear down an old
condemned eye-sore of a building
and build an attractive new retail
building in its place, and I voted
against it. Now a different guy is
asking to do the exact same thing
just a block or two down the street.
The problem is, I REALLY want
to approve this second request
because I think it is a good idea,
and besides, I really like the guy
doing the project. What can I do
to approve this second request
without it looking like either I
made a mistake on the first one or
that I am playing favorites?

Dear Confused,
I pulled out my copy of “Politics
101” and it seems you have five
possible ways to handle your
dilemma:
The “Moving Right Along”
Method: Go ahead and approve
the second one and pretend the
first one never happened. People
will complain for a few weeks,
but this will probably be forgotten
long before the next election.
The “Details, Details”
Diversion: Look for some minor
difference between the two
requests, then use that as your
reason for approving one after
denying the other. The book calls
this plausible deniability, and it’s
a classic.
The “Breaking News”
Bamboozle: Do a little research
and claim that new evidence
has suddenly come to light
that allows you to approve the
second one. Then go back and
approve the first one later based
on this new research. Avoid
questions about why you didn’t
do the research before the first
vote.
The “I’ll Get To It”
Gambit: When you vote to
approve the second project, tell
everyone you will be reconsidering
the first one real soon. That way
it looks like you were going to do
the right thing all along.
The “Tell The Truth”
Turnaround: Just state that you
made a mistake on the first vote
and then consider both projects
using the same rules. You can say
you didn’t understand, or that you
had not done the research, or that
your personal feelings clouded
your judgment. It really doesn’t
matter what reason you give as
long as you do the right thing in
this case and then be consistent in
the future.
I highly recommend the last one
there about telling the truth. I’m
not a professional politician so
if my regular guy advice doesn’t
work for you, I won’t be offended,
but I hope it helps. – Dave

The City of Central and the City of Zachary challenged each other on which city could
collect the most food during their drive. Chicken dinners, grilled by Bill McLin, were
sold on Friday at the POD location, with all proceeds of the sale going directly to the
Central Community Food Pantry.
P&Z Approves Rezoning, Council Vote Tuesday
The rezoning of a property on Hooper Road in the area designated as
"City Center" was recommended for approval by the Planning & Zoning
Commission last week. The applicant seeks to open a seafood market &
deli in the former Sadie's Closet building on the south side of Hooper between Sullivan & Joor. This request to rezone from Rural to Light Commercial 1 will be heard by the City Council on November 27th. In October
the City Council voted 3-2 to deny that same rezoning request at the nearby
intersection of Sullivan & Hooper.
Microsurfacing Finished on
Gurney and Triple B Roads

The city of Central has completed
another
capital
improvements
project in November 2012 involving
microsurfacing of two streets, Gurney
Rd. and Triple B Rd. Microsurfacing
is a popular pavement preservation tool
that extends the life of streets by years
and costs much less than a full overlay.
Vance Brothers was the contractor.
Microsurfacing involves a thin layer
of pavement that helps seal cracks on
roadways with a sturdy base, which
prevents water from entering the cracks and eroding the pavement and base.
Gurney Rd. and Triple B Rd. were chosen due to the old age of the roadways
and the number of cracks in the pavement. The total cost of the project was
approximately $125,000 for the three miles of microsurfacing overlay. A
normal overlay rehab project would cost approximately $125,000 for just
one mile. So, microsurfacing is a cost-efficient method of extending the life
of roadways that still have a good base.
The city is looking forward to selecting several streets next year for another
round of microsurfacing. The city is also preparing for full overlay and
rehabilitation work on streets in Amber Lakes and Village Lakes subdivisions,
as well as Washington Lane and Planchet Rd. between Frenchtown Rd. and
Thibodeaux Rd. The city council approved funds at the last council meeting
for coring tests so that the city’s engineering firm can begin to prepare
construction plans.

Wine and Dining Experience a Hand for Thanksgiving

What creates a magical night
out? Candlelight, soft live music,
excellent wines, well prepared and
conceived dishes, attentive wait
staff? If all of these are on your list,
look for DeAngelo’s Casual Italian
Dining’s next “Fine Wine and Dining
Experience.” Holding their first such
event last Sunday, the restaurant was
filled with appreciative customers
who praised the presentation of
each course and the sommelier who
explained why each course was
paired with a certain wine.
Starting off with tender tuna tartare
accompanied by a light prosecco, the
experience progressed through savory
shrimp and grits paired with sauvignon
blanc, delicious wild mushroom soup
served with a smooth pinot noir,
beef tortellini in a rich cream sauce
accompanied by a ghizzano, melt in
the mouth filet mignon with a sturdy
lucente, and finally an elegant crème
brulee kissed by a riondo moscato.
Empty plates were silently whisked
away and glasses recharged almost
unnoticeably by the wonderful
wait staff, and the kitchen received
applause at the end of the evening.
Co-owner Mike Breaux spoke
enthusiastically about the next
event, which he plans to hold in the
first quarter of next year. What a
terrific way to introduce Central
to new wine selections and course
offerings. Well done!
Sign Up Now for Bark for Life

Relay for Life is hosting a second fundraising event called Bark for Life.
This event is to honor the care-giving qualities of our canine companions.
Because Central does not have a dog area, we have teamed up with the
Zachary Relay to host the event at the Raising Cane's Dog Park in Zachary.
The event will be on Sunday, December 2nd from 2-5pm. There will be
Pictures with Santa, holiday costume contests, activities, hopefully a dog
agility center and some Police K9 demonstrations, as well as booths with
teams having their own fundraising (much like Central Relay- selling food,
drinks, merchandise, and/or raffles).
People can pre-register their dog(s) online for $15 ($5 each additional dog)
($20 on the day of the event) at www.relayforlife.org/zacharycentralBFL.
Each registration gets a Relay Bandana while supplies last. We are
anticipating doing at least one walk around a "track" for survivors.

The Central Rotary Club provided Thanksgiving Turkey dinners for 50
needy Central families. With assistance from the student body of Tanglewood
Elementary, Immanuel Baptist food pantry, Romero’s Supermarket,
Walmart, Oak Point Fresh Market, Winn Dixie, BK Bank, Rabalais Homes,
and Future Hope Ministries; approximately 200 Central residents will enjoy
a traditional holiday dinner. This is the second year that The Central Rotary
has conducted this project, which is one of several endeavors held throughout
the year with the goal of giving back to the community. Rotarians pictured

We are so happy that dads of Central continue to show support
of their children by attending the "All-Pro Dads" breakfast before
school at Central Intermediate School. Assistant Principle Jeremy
O'Banion has always been a supporter of the program. When asked
about the impact of the program, he said, "It allows the school and the
community to continue to work together, and encourages the parents
and kids to rely on God for their strength."
At each breakfast parents are encouraged to affirm their children in
front of others, building their self-esteem. Sometimes we often forget
to tell our children that we are proud of them, but at each breakfast
the parents do just that. It is always heart warming to see the smiles
on the faces of the kids as their dads tell them how proud they are of
something specific in their lives.
This month the focus theme was putting a stop to bullying and a
challenge was issued to them to watch for it and handle the situation
correctly.

Bellingrath Hills Elementary Kindergarten was nominated
and selected to receive an award from The Supriya Jindal
Foundation for Louisiana’s Children. The award includes
classroom “center” related tools in order to support the
instructional environment in the classrooms.
Mrs. Supriya Jindal will be at Bellingrath on November 28,
2012, to present the award to Mrs. Laurie Gehling, principal
of Bellingrath Hills and all 16 kindergarten teachers. Her
visit will also include visits to the classrooms to observe the
students using the new hands on tools that were awarded, and
will end with her reading a book to Mrs. Jamie McCurley’s
classroom.
Our teachers wish to thank The Supriya Jindal Foundation
for Louisiana’s Children for the wonderful new materials.
Fundraiser for Tircuit
Family at MePa’s
MePa’s Diner, located at 6643 Sullivan Rd, is hosting a blood
drive and fundraiser on Saturday, December 1st from 8am-2pm.
This event is for two year old Amelia Tircuit who is currently at
St. Jude Hospital in Memphis undergoing treatment for Leukemia.
In addition to the blood drive and accepting donations, there will
be a spacewalk and Santa will be available for photos.

CPS Students Say “Thank You” to Veterans & Families

students at Central Private School
honored veterans, fallen heroes, and
the Blue and Gold Star families at a
special Blue Tie Service held in the
school gym on Friday, November
9, 2012. Members of the school
family and community were invited
to attend the ceremony. Students
heard moving messages from Micah
& Kaleigh Barnett, the nephew and
niece of fallen hero 1st LT Chris
Barnett of Baton Rouge, and from
Mrs. Marybeth LeVan, the Gold
Star Mother of fallen hero CPL
Kyle Grimes. USMC Sgt William
“Bobby” Westbrook, himself a 2003
graduate of Central Private, also
spoke to the students and families
about his time in the service, the
sacrifices that military families make,
and the importance of being thankful
for the freedoms that we have.
As a part of the service, participating
students wore blue neck ties bearing
the name of one of Louisiana’s
fallen heroes. The 70 students who
volunteered to participate took turns
reading the name, rank, hometown,
age, and date of death of each soldier.
A candle was lit in that soldier’s
honor after each name was read. The
candles helped students to realize
just how many young men and
women from our own community
and surrounding area have sacrificed
their lives to provide for the freedoms
enjoyed by Americans.
After the service, students had
the opportunity to meet and thank
the family members of some of the
honored soldiers. Families were
allowed to have the tie bearing their
loved one’s name if they desired.
The service was coordinated by
Mrs. Tiffany Villarreal and Mrs.
Susan McWilliams, CPS middle
school teachers. As a part of the
preparations for this service, 7th and
8th grade students in Mrs. Villarreal’s
classes made donations towards
other memorial projects including a
donation to Mayor Shelton “Mac”
Watts’ Blue Star 100 Club, the
purchase of a brick in the Central
Veterans Memorial Park honoring
Sgt Westbrook, and a donation to the
Wounded Warrior Project.
The City of Central Chamber of Commerce’s

Friday, November 23rd, is Black Friday. Black Friday is the name
given to the day following Thanksgiving and traditionally marks the
beginning of the Christmas shopping season. On Black Friday, most
major retailers open extremely early and offer promotional sales to
kick off the holiday shopping season. Many retailers look to this day
to bolster their sales for the year and to hopefully allow them to end the
year in the black financially.
We have many dedicated retailers in the Central Chamber. How great

too well known to families who
have lost a child. St. Alphonsus
Church will once again provide
the opportunity for grieving
families and their friends to come
together on Sunday, December 9,
at 7:00PM to celebrate the life,
love and light of those children
gone much too soon. This candle
light service will symbolize
that the light of these precious
children will forever be held in
our hearts.
Central Bible Church to
Host Open Mic Night

If you're looking for a chance to share your musical talents with others
in the community, then mark your calendars for Friday, November
30th, 2012. Central Bible Church will be hosting the community event
Unplugged: Open Mic Night from 7-10 P.M. The Hammond-based
band, Redemption Family will also grace the stage that evening, to
close out the show. The event is free, and sure to be a night of fun and
entertainment for people of all ages. Coffee and light snacks will be
provided, while local musicians take the stage to show off their talents.
We're setting genres aside for the evening, and inviting musicians
to share their toe-tapping, soul-filled music with the community of
Central. There are many talented artists in our area, and we're wanting
to encourage the creativity and passion for music even more so. The
best thing about this event truly is the fact that numerous types of music
could be played, because when you allow "Open-Mic" that opens the
doors for individuals who may not typically have the opportunity, or
even comfort, to play their music for others. So whether you're an artist
who would love to share your song in a comfortable "coffee-shop like"
environment, or just a lover of the arts, this evening is one to reserve for
Unplugged.
Musicians interested in playing this evening will be able to sign up
on the night of the event at the door, until all of the spots fill, but may
reserve a spot by signing up earlier. To reserve your spot on stage, please
email Matthew Anderson at [email protected]. Depending on
the turnout, musicians will be able to share at least 1-2 songs, keeping
in mind that this is a family event. Another reason to come, would be to
hear Redemption Family, who are currently recording their first album.
They're a great seven member band, that are equally hard to fit into one
vehicle, let alone just one genre of music, as they poetically incorporate
many instruments into their set. Imagine Mumford and Sons being
merged with Anathallo, led by awe-inspiring lyrics and a passion for
their craft.

The Central Cultural Foundation Coffee Hour was held at 7PM last Thursday at
Central Perk. Last week’s meeting featured guest Van Vo. He is a local pianist and dance
instructor. While he was there, he performed some works on piano then did a ballroom
dance routine with his partner and led the audience in some ballroom dance moves.
GSBC to Host A Season of
Hope Service

A Season of Hope service will be held to honor all babies lost to
miscarriage, stillbirth and infant death on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at 3
p.m. at Greenwell Springs Baptist Church, 19421 Greenwell Springs Road.
Holidays can be difficult for those who have lost a baby. The season of
celebration and family gatherings can be especially painful for a family
grieving the loss of a child. Often there is little comfort in traditions, family
gatherings and seasonal events after a loss.
A Season of Hope service is a special time set aside to celebrate life, no
matter how short. It also is an opportunity for those who have had a loss to
share with others who are experiencing the same emotions in a safe, caring
and uplifting service.
Family, friends and caregivers of all faiths who have shared in the loss of
an infant are welcome and encouraged to attend.
A Season of Hope is sponsored by Threads of Love and Angels Among
Us. Threads of Love is Christ-centered sewing ministry whose mission
is healing and binding hearts of parents in time of uncertainty about their
baby’s health or when they lose an infant. Additional information on

Us is a support group for who have suffered pregnancy of infant loss. For

Healthy Recipe: Egg Melt
Sandwich

This sandwich was inspired by an ill-conceived attempt to “treat
myself” to a meal on campus. I was staying late for a review session and
tried to pick up an asparagus, mushroom and egg sandwich on wholewheat bread from a coffee shop, but they were out of mushrooms and
whole wheat bread. Lucky me, right? In order to satisfy my craving, I
created a similar sandwich at home a few days later. To be honest, Joe
and I aren’t the biggest fans of cooked mushrooms, but for some reason,
they just work with this recipe, which is great because they are super
good for you! Another Bonus: It kept me full for hours!
Serves 2
• 2 Multigrain Sandwich Rounds
• 2 Slices Part-Skim Provolone Cheese
• 2 tsp. unsalted butter, separated
• ¼ cup roughly chopped mushrooms
• ~ 2 cups fresh spinach, torn
• 4 eggs
• Pepper to taste
Heat a small-medium pan over medium heat until warm. Saute
mushrooms in 1 tsp butter until slightly browned, about 3-5 minutes.
Add 2 cups torn Spinach leaves and remaining tsp. of butter. Saute until
spinach is wilted and all the water has evaporated, about 3 minutes.
Crack eggs and add to skillet as well. Allow to cook about 3-5 minutes,
scrambling with a spatula occasionally. Pepper to taste and allow to
fully cook (I separated my egg mixture into 2 circles and allowed to
cook into patties). While the eggs finish cooking, open the multigrain
rounds and place on a large baking sheet. Top 2 rounds with the slices of
cheese. Broil in the oven for about 1-3 minutes, or until bread is toasted
and cheese is slightly melted. Remove from oven and top with ½ of egg,
spinach and mushroom mixture.
With 350 cal, 18 g fat, 23 g carbs, 6 g fiber, 23 g protein, 75% DV of
Vitamin A, 19% DV of Iron, and 26% DV of Calcium, this sandwich
is a portable powerhouse! It has a good balance of fat, protein and
carbohydrates to curb hunger and, since it can be eaten while running
out the door, it will keep you focused on your busy schedule, not your
growling stomach!

You could sense an uncertainty in the air last Friday night in Wildcat Stadium.
Even though Central was the higher seed and had played lights out football for
most of the season, the fans in attendance were concerned Mandeville might be
the team that would end Central’s season.
And so it happened, Central’s road to the dome ended in a second round loss,
38-20 to the Skippers. The Wildcats had their worst performance of the year
against a Mandeville team that prepared for Central’s best. Central’s best could
have probably beaten the Skippers, but it was not meant to be. The agony of
the loss was evident in the faces of the fans, coaches and players, especially
the seniors who played their last game for the maroon and white. What a great
group of young men, this senior class, four year district champs, the most wins
of any senior class in school history, this class was special. Coach Sid said after
the game, “At some point you lose, but the tough part for me is not being able
to continue the season with my team. I love them.”
Central Football had a great year and made a lot of memories for the senior
class of 2013. The future looks bright and the road to the dome will continue
next year.

CHS Swim Celebrates
Successful Season

The Central boys swim team
matched their 7th place finish at the
City Meet by finishing in 7th place at
the LHSAA State Meet last weekend.
With that finish, the Wildcats finished
ahead of traditionally strong swim
teams such as Baton Rouge High
and St. Thomas More. In addition,
the 136 points scored by the Wildcats
were only 2 points behind 6th place
Pineville.
The Wildcats started the finals
off with a strong start in the first
event. The 200 medley relay of Sean
Murphy, Daniel Parker, Matthew
Arnold, and Kade McAdams swam
a season best time of 1:53.62 and
finished 5th. Later, the 200 freestyle
relay also finished 5th with another
season best time of 1:41.81. The
relay consisted of Daniel Parker,
Aaron Raggio, Kade McAdams, and
Matthew Arnold.
Individually, four Wildcats scored
points in both of their individual
events. Matthew Arnold led the way
with a 5th place finish in the 500
freestyle and a 4th place in the 100
backstroke. Daniel Parker finished
10th in the 50 freestyle and 5th in the
100 breaststroke. Sean Murphy and
Kade McAdams were the other two
swimmers to score points in both of
their events.
Coaches Mary Hodges and Scott
Osborne are looking for continued
improvement next year as none of
the 7 boys swimmers are seniors. In
order to crack the top 5 next year,
though, the Wildcats are looking for
more students (boys and girls) to
come out and join the swim team.

successful season with their banquet
on Tuesday, November 27th.
