Stones That Live
Each weekend this box contains current pledge information. Diocesan Assessment: $150,000 Number of pledges received: 480 Amount Pledged: $226,925 Amount Paid: $115,921 Great news! As of March 31, our parish loan balance is $608,031. Any funds in excess of the PSA Parish Assessment will be directed to pay down the loan. A good artist can take something other people overlook and make it beautiful—a leaf, a pebble, or even a scuff or a scratch. An artist knows how to set something simple in an environment where its inner beauty shines. God is the ultimate artist. God can take each of us, no matter how beautiful or ugly we are outside or inside, and turn us into a vision of glory. The First Letter of Peter calls us stones, material that can be overlooked or used for building. Jesus was a living stone that many people rejected. But God the artist found what was precious in Jesus the stone. The letter says, “like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices.” If we come to Christ, the living stone, he will fashion us into something remarkable. Other people may not appreciate our inner beauty. They may not notice the gifts we have. They may not know how we can grace their lives. They may even make us feel useless. But God finds us most useful. We are living stones, pleasing to God through Jesus Christ. Some people overlook what good Christians think and do. They build arsenals rather than feed the hungry. They sever relationships rather than grant forgiveness. They squander time rather than use it for the good. But God appreciates the good we do and builds us
up as living stones.

Next weekend, May 24 and 25, all people of the Diocese of Orange have the opportunity to donate to the Parishes in Collaboration Collection. This collection is for the purpose of assisting parishes in the Diocese of Orange that exhibit ongoing needs that cannot be paid for by their ordinary income. A community in need is one that doesn’t have the financial ability to pay for what is considered essential services (i.e. essential paid staff such as Youth Ministry, Directors of Religious Education or Business Managers), or one that has urgent capital needs (such as emergency electrical or plumping repairs, maintenance or equipment). All money donated to this collection is put into a restricted fund that will be administered by a group consisting of laity and clergy of the diocese. Parishes with needs as stated above will apply for grants from this fund to be used for their specific needs. By participating in the Parishes in Collaboration Collection, all people of the Diocese of Orange are helping one another support the necessary ministries and works of our parishes that struggle financially. Thank you for your generosity. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Luncheon for Seniors

Wondering Why
In our RCIA session this Thursday, May 22, we will discuss ways in which our Neophytes can continue to progress in their spiritual journey after they leave the RCIA process. The following week we will discuss the Ascension of the Lord and how the Paschal Mystery applies to our daily lives.
Today’s lesson from Acts of the Apostles speaks about the very earliest church at a time when a need for change was recognized. The apostles whom Jesus had selected during his lifetime had been the overseers of the beginning church, but are now realizing that they need some more help. A division in the community sparks the need for reevaluation and change. It seems that in the care for the poor, the widows of Jerusalem’s Jewish Christians were being favored over the Greek‐speaking widows of believers who came from the surrounding cities. The apostles decided that they should focus their own work on preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ and evangelizing. They needed some other people to handle the works of charity, including food distribution. They needed to delegate some of the work of service to others. In Greek, the word for service was diakonia. From that root word, the men chosen for this ministry of service began to be called deacons. The first seven chosen are named in the reading, but the office of Deacon continued to grow in the church. It was considered a holy calling, to which a person must be called by the church and the hands of the apostles laid upon him conferring authority. These Deacons were the assistants to the Apostles, and later to the Bishops of the Church. Their work was primarily concerned with service, but eventually they were also delegated to preach and baptize and assist at other sacramental moments. The Order of Deacon was prevalent and respected in the church for the first five centuries. Later, it became a transitional step on the way to a man being ordained as a priest. The call of service remained, but a candidate for priesthood would spend six months to two years as a Deacon before being ordained as a priest. The Order of the Permanent Deacon faded away in the practice of the Church. The Second Vatican Council restored the Permanent Deaconate to the place of honor it deserves in our church structure. Now men who still meet the qualifications given in this early writing in Acts—men of faith, wisdom and filled with the Holy Spirit—are called to a ministry of service in the church. Today’s Permanent Deacons are chosen from men who feel a call to serve the church, who participate in an evaluation and selection process, and study for four years prior to their ordination. They must be at least 35 years old, and may be married, if they have married prior to their ordination. If the wife of a Deacon should die, then the Deacon must remain celibate for the remainder of his life. Permanent Deacons serve in parishes, hospitals and many ministries. They can baptize, celebrate wedding ceremonies, preach at Mass, assist the priest at Mass, counsel, teach, and provide many services according to individual talents. Deacons cannot consecrate the Eucharist, hear confessions or anoint the sick; those sacraments are restricted to priests and bishops. Permanent Deacons share in the sacrament of Holy Orders and are considered ordained to their ministry, as are priests and bishops. They are a great gift to our church community, in the early church, and today. Those considering becoming a Catholic are invited to come to the Inquiry sessions which also take place on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9 in the Ministry Center Library. The Inquiry groups are casual meetings to answer initial questions that people may have, to reflect upon God’s presence throughout their lives, and to begin to become familiar with the Sunday scripture readings. If you would like more information, please call Charlene at (714) 637‐
4360 x114. Anyone who hopes to be received into the Church by Easter next year, 2015, should begin the RCIA process as soon as possible. _______________________________________________________________________ Adult Faith Formation Easter Study: Resurrection!
We will continue our series on Resurrection and afterlife this Wednesday evening, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. This series reflects on Catholic belief in the afterlife as revealed in the Gospels, the Letters of St. Paul, and the Book of Revelation. This week’s topics will be Hell and Punishment, and The Heavenly Treasury. These recorded presentations will be given by Professor Candida Moss, a professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of Notre Dame. Each evening we will hear two 25‐minute presentations with time for discussion after each section. Our meetings will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m., and it will be helpful for participants to bring a Bible. _______________________________________________________________________ Look for the People Wearing White
Our Neophytes who were baptized at the Easter Vigil will be wearing their white baptismal robes to Sunday Masses during the Easter Season (Easter through Pentecost). They are a sign of new life in our community of St. Norbert. Take the time to greet and congratulate them during this period of celebration. _______________________________________________________________________ Prayer & Meditation with Scripture
Our prayer group will gather in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel this Tuesday, May 20. This hour of prayer time utilizes varying prayer forms each week, including Lectio Divina, centering prayer, prayer of remembrance, Taizé prayer and Ignatian meditation. The prayer group is facilitated by Sr. Breda and Mary Prather. It is a time to meet with others in quiet and peace away from the busyness and noise of the world. We gather for prayer in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Please feel free to join us—
you are most welcome!

—James A. Wallace, C.Ss.R. MAY 18, 2014 | FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Our Parish & Beyond
Wills & Trusts Week 2014
Live in a Christ-Like Manner
The Orange Catholic Foundation will present afternoon and evening seminars at nine local parishes across our diocese during the week of May 19—24. Each session is presented by local Catholic estate planning attorneys who will explain and answer questions regarding estate taxes, probate expenses, trusts, guardianship of minor children, selection of personal representatives, and steps on how to create and update your own will or trust. To view the schedule of locations go to https://
www.oc‐foundation.org/ and click on Wills & Trusts Week. In the Cursillo Movement we approach evangelization as a very natural act of being Christ‐like within each of our daily activities. We realize that while most people would like to live their lives in a Christ‐like manner, the pressures of the world often make this difficult, if not impossible. The Cursillo Movement provides a method and a technique to provide each of us with the tools, the mentality, the strength and the support to make this natural type of evangelization possible. If you would like to bring Christ into your life, take the first step and sign up for Cursillo. The next Cursillo weekends will be in October 2014. Please contact Ron Accornero at (714 ) 396‐7295 for more information about Cursillo. _______________________________________________________________________ Intercessors of Divine Mercy Feast of the Visitation
