DESIGN MEETS FUNCTIONALITY
THE CONCEPT OF UNITY
There’s something reassuringly solid and monolithic about ceilings. In its
initial state, the ceiling surface is unbroken. Uniform. Unitary.
But as functions are added to the ceiling, that calmness is disturbed.
The uniformity is interrupted. The surface is broken.
Our Unity perforations seek to return the ceiling surface to its calm, uninterrupted state. But also maintain the versatility of a modern ceiling structure.
Unity is driven by the desire to create a consistent ceiling surface. A single
surface that sets a new standard in both design and functionality.
The Unity family includes three different designs: Unity 3, Unity 6 and Unity
8|15|20. Each perforation design is available for a range of products. Each
with different edge designs, expressions, application and functionality.
Unity is available for visible grid systems, too. It’s all part of our philosophy of creating solutions, not limitations. Of giving you maximum room for
expression.

MAKE ROOM FOR THE
MIRACLE MINERAL
Gypsum – also known as the ‘miracle mineral’ – has been an indispensable
material for artists, architects and builders since the dawn of time.
Gypsum formation begins with a chemical reaction which occurs when sulphurous particles from volcanic emissions enter the ocean. It occurs as rock,
quartz, or in its purest form, as gem-like crystal. For us, however, its true
beauty lies in its limitless potential.
At Knauf Danoline, our mission is to bring this potential to life.
Gypsum is an infinite natural
resource, continually replenished
by natural processes.

UNITY 3
3.5x3.5 mm square perforations
Unity 3’s square, pixel-like perforation gives it a hi-tech appearance.
So it’s ideal for rooms with hard, refined materials, to accentuate the
straight lines and solidity of the structure.
Unity 3 is available on three different products as standard, to meet
different demands for design and functionality.

UNITY 6
Ø6 mm round perforations
The classic look of Unity 6 creates a soft surface that echoes the
underlying malleability of gypsum. It’s perfect for rooms with cast
concrete walls and cast floors to support the overall three-dimensional
expression. Unity 6 is available on two different products as standard,
to meet different demands for design and functionality.

Unity 8|15|20
Round perforations with three different
diameters: Ø8 mm, Ø15 mm and Ø20 mm.
The retro feel of Unity 8|15|20 symbolises movement. It takes its
inspiration from the meeting of water and air – air bubbles. Perfect
for rooms that use warm materials like wood, and with organic
shapes that suggest the slow, steady movement of lines through the
space. Unity 8|15|20 is available on three different products as
standard, to meet different demands for design and functionality.

UNITY MAKES SWEET MUSIC IN AALBORG
The House of Music in Aalborg, Denmark, is the new
cultural centre for the city and the northern Jutland region.
Inaugurated in the spring of 2014, this impressive piece
of architecture has been designed by the world-famous
Austrian Coop Himmelb(l)au architects. The building
is part of a large master plan for the renovation of the
waterfront area in Aalborg, overlooking the fjord.
The success of our cooperation with Coop Himmelb(l)au
in addressing the acoustic challenges of this project is the
inspiration behind our Unity concept. By extending the
perforations all the way to the edge of the ceiling, Unity
successfully delivers the dual priorities of higher sound
absorption and unified ceiling expression.
At the heart of the House of Music are the foyer and
the main 1300-seat concert hall. Surrounding the hall
are smaller music halls, rehearsal and teaching rooms,
housing students from the nearby Aalborg University,
Music School and the Aalborg Philharmonics.
Given the musical intent of the building, as well as
designing an elegant and functional space, the architects’
priority was to ensure exceptional acoustics. Working with
the leading New York-based acoustic consultants Artec
Consultants, much time and effort was therefore focused
on creating the right acoustic environment. Not only for
the main concert hall, but also for the surrounding rooms.
For the rehearsal spaces, teaching rooms and other
functional spaces, Knauf Danoline worked closely
with Coop Himmelb(l)au to develop an acoustically
sensitive ceiling solution. The result is an acoustic ceiling
that combines neutral room acoustics and optimised
reverberation time, with the right level of sound absorption
and sound reflection. This in turn enables the artists and
their teachers to hear the music correctly.
According to the architects, Contur Unity 6 ceilings were
selected due to their sound absorption properties and their
low installation depth. The installation depth is critically
important for room acoustics as it means the ceiling height
is only marginally reduced. In addition, the fact that the
perforations extend right to the edge of the tiles, and the
design conceals the suspension grid of the ceiling system,
ensures a clean, uniform surface.

acoustic materials and placing them correctly. Here the
unperforated tiles are used in some parts of the room to
reflect the sound.
