PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hello from the DCC board of directors and
management and staff.
At the time of this writing , it appears mother
nature has been reasonably kind to us this
winter season and the forecast for the near
future looks good.
John
Steffensen
President
Club activities during the Christmas season
was quite busy, with a sold-out Danish
Christmas dinner, (Dansk Jule Middag),
followed by a great New Years gala complete
with a great band and of course a superb
meal provided by Eli and his staff.
Unfortunately the attendance was down
substantially, which seems to a sign of the
current economic environment. Peter was busy catering
to another New Years venue in addition our event. The
Valentine’s party took place on February 20th, entertainment
by Jana and Danny. The Katten af Tønden party will be taking
place on March 6.
The Danish Lutheran Church will host the Dinner & Auction on
April 29th. The Burns Night function had 140 attending and the
Chinese Cultural Society held a function with 140 attending.
Thanks again to Bente and her volunteers who work to make
all the social events fun and successful Be sure to check out
this Newsletter, DCC website and Facebook for upcoming
events
At the January board meeting , Peter advised the board that
food, beer and liquor sales are all down, and the cost of food
products are on the rise, as much as 6 to 7%. The club is still
in a financially strong position with a healthy bank account,
thanks to prudent management by Peter and his management
staff. Peter advised the board that over the next few months,
the club will embark on a project to update our website which

Take a trip around the world
A Danish Heritage Seminar will be held at

in the Eastern Townships of Québec from
Monday, May 30 to Saturday, June 4, 2016.
The theme is Take a trip around the world.
The Headmasters are Jørgen and Kirsten

the capital of Europe, where we will hear about the European Union,
the Danish Church and the nearby battlefields. We will hear about
Ethiopia as well as about the beliefs and lifestyle of the Amish and
the Mennonites. We will hear about Hans Christian Andersen and
the Manor Houses on the isle of Fyn. There will be a presentation
about Christian Marker, Alberta’s first Dairy Commissioner. This year’s
Seminar is an educational, inspiring and fun-filled course, which
includes activities such as workshops, singing, walking and relaxing.
An important aspect of the seminar is the friendship that quickly
develops among the participants from across Canada and elsewhere.
The fee is this year only $789 per person double occupancy and
includes guest room, three meals daily, coffee breaks, lectures,
free parking and all taxes and gratuities. For more information or a
registration form contact Rolf Christensen at [email protected] or

Calgary Stampede
This wonderful marching band is coming to Calgary again.
Their very first visit was 1978. A few of the “boys” are still
involved with the band and looking forward to participating in
one more Stampede Parade and meet old friends.
We have planned a fun evening at the Danish Canadian Club
on Tuesday, July 12th in the evening.
Details will follow later.

Dear D.C.C., Peter and Chefs
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity
and caring on the 23rd. The shindig was a great success, food
was amazing. All leftovers were dropped at Inn from the Cold.
I think we had a turnout of about 100, we closed down at 9pm
as it was very cold. One of the alley homeless, Shannon came
up to me at the end of the night and said “Ros I have not had a
good Christmas in 8 years and tonight was wonderful”. That is
what it is all about!
With sincere Thanks and Appreciation ffor your kindness,
Roslyn Ross @ BOCONCEPT
On December 23 2015 BoConcept along with surrounding
businesses in the area arranged a Christmas party for the
homeless people who congregate in the back alley.
Danish Skype founder introduces robot delivery
Meet your new “gofer”. The founders of
Skype are preparing to unleash an army
of delivery robots onto the world, with a
Danish debut expected in 2017.
The future promised to us in “the Jetsons'
is getting closer and closer to reality.
Before too long, you could be sharing the
pavement with robots that are delivering
groceries and other items.
The earthbound robots are the brainchild
of Danish Skype co-founder Janus Friis
and his partner, Ahti Heinla, who recently
announced the launch of their new
company, Starship Technologies.
The company plans to roll out small
delivery robots that it says will “create
unprecedented convenience and cost
savings for individuals, while opening up
new opportunities for business such as
parcel delivery firms or grocery stores”.
The small robot will be capable of
carrying the equivalent of two large
grocery bags on 5 to 30 minute deliveries
from local hubs or stores. Shoppers will
be able to track the robots' progress
through a mobile app that will also allow
the purchaser to unlock the robots' cargo.
“They travel at the slow speed–a brisk
walking pace. They don't fly–these are
not drones. They travel on pavement/
sidewalks, blending safely in with
pedestrian traffic,” Heinla said.
The robots will be outfitted with anti-theft
devices.
