It’s Festival Time!
On Sunday, June 5 from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., Temple will

sixth annual Jewish Cultural Festival. With everyone’s favorite
Jewish foods, live entertainment, vendors, a raffle, kids’ activities,
education sessions and more, the day will showcase our
congregation and Reform Judaism in a unique way—and it’s
Temple’s major fundraiser of the year!
Come early, stay late, bring friends and be a part of this uniquely
Temple event!

More than 200 Temple members and friends will don volunteer t-shirts to

food providers, and answer questions. Email [email protected] or go online to tidayton.org
and click on the festival tab.
Become a sponsor.
Businesses are sponsoring the Festival to support Temple and
Dayton’s Jewish community. Temple’s members and friends are also contributing, from $50
to $5,000. We appreciate every gift, no matter the size, but act now—the Festival is just
days away! Simply visit tidayton.org and click on the festival tab.
Sell and buy raffle tickets.
There are over $1500 worth of prizes that you can
win! Whether you’re in need of new furniture, looking to get away for a weekend, a huge
Dayton Dragons fan, a jewelry lover, a foodie, or wine connoisseur, we have just the thing for
you! For just $5 per ticket, you can try your luck at winning one of these fabulous prizes. For
the best value, buy seven tickets for only $20 (that’s like getting three chances for free).
Winners will be drawn on June 5 and you do not have to be present to win. All proceeds
benefit Temple Israel.
Purchase tickets online at tidayton.org (click on the festival tab); from Shirlee Gilbert, ticket

Entertainers: INDYKLEZ
Straight off Noah’s ark is our petting zoo, featuring a camel,
llama, Nubian goat and miniature donkey. Last year the
animals were a big hit! New this year: Mount Masada, an
eighteen-foot inflatable slide. Climb to the top and feel the
wind in your face as you zoom back down.
Take the intoxicating flavor of Eastern European
music, the earthiness of country sounds and the
sophistication of world and classical music. Add a
splash of pop and a pinch of Broadway and you have
INDYKLEZ. Coming to us from Indianapolis,
INDYKLEZ members include Larry Francer, Ginny
Womack, Rebecca Chappell, Mark Aspinall, and Garry
Wasserman.
Ready, Set, Run or Walk in the Oy Vey 5K
Did you know that the Oy Vey 5k is open to everyone? Whether you
are a walker or a runner, join us on this flat, fast course that boasts
views of Downtown Dayton, the river, and Island Metro Park. Start
time is 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 5. You can register online at
tidayton.org. Cost is $30 until June 3 and $35 after. All registered
participants will receive $5 in food tickets to use at the festival and
special goodies and coupons from local businesses. Gather your
friends and family for a fun morning that leads into a festival with craft
beer, amazing food, and eclectic entertainment. All proceeds benefit

OFFICE HOURS
There are special yet daunting
moments in our lives when we stand,
dizzy, right at the confluence of the
end and the beginning.
During the ten years that I served as
a campus rabbi, the month of June
meant only one thing. A quarter of
our students marked the end of their
time at the college with a ceremony
variously known as graduation or
commencement. Graduation marked
the end of their studies and
commencement announced the
beginning of the rest of their lives.
On that same day they were
required to move out of campus
housing. Literally, they were leaving
four years of their lives behind.
In recent years, June has acquired a
different but similar flavor for me.
Each year at this time I am at the end
of my work and the beginning of my
work. The ending is the most
difficult. At the end of this month
I will be leaving Dayton and Temple
Israel and all of you. It has been a
wonderful, enriching, nourishing year
for me and I hope that has been the
case for all of you as well. I will miss
you very much.
The end of this month is also a
commencement for all of us. I will
begin my work as the interim rabbi
at Temple Beth David in Cheshire,
CT. You will begin what I hope will
be a year of joy and growth, your
first with Rabbi Karen Bodney-Halasz
as your Senior Rabbi. Next year I
will not be in touch with you
because it is important that you give
your full attention to getting to
know Rabbi Bodney-Halasz in her
new role. I will, however, be nagging
her from time to time to tell me
about how all of you are faring.
Wishing you joy and celebration in
5777 and all the years that follow.

Three Ways:
First, we reach out to the
community, sharing Judaism and
building awareness of Temple Israel.
Second, we reach in to our
congregation, involving 200 or more
members and friends to plan, prepare
and host a day of activities for
everyone.
Third, we raise funds that support
Temple’s operations throughout the
year.
Shavout Service
Sunday, June 12 at 10:30 a.m.
Shavuot is the Hebrew word for
“weeks,” and is the festival marking
the giving of the Torah at Mount
Sinai, seven weeks after Passover.
Like many other Jewish holidays, it
began as an ancient agricultural
festival during which Israelites
brought crop offerings to the Temple
in Jerusalem. Today, it is a
celebration of Torah, education, and
actively choosing to participate in
Jewish life.

Temple never denies membership to anyone for financial

you voluntarily increase your membership
contribution, you help sustain Temple’s programs

Members donate half of Temple’s revenues, and the
balance comes mostly from Temple Israel Foundation and
fundraising.
