From the Kentucky Soybean Board
Soymilk...It's Elementary!
If you're a parent, you've inevitably gone to pour milk over the
Frosted Flakes only to find it soured. It may sound silly, but
one of best things about soymilk is that it never spoils. Well
almost never; its shelf life compared to regular milk is almost
infinite. Plus it has a sweet malty flavor kids equate with a
milkshake. With school just around the corner, now is a good
time to think about kids and lunches....and soy.

The Mid-South Pullers Association heads to Clinton,
Kentucky and the Hickman county Fair this weekend
for a Friday night hook at the fair. The Hickman County
Fairgrounds will be full of all the sights, sounds, and
smells associated with a county fair. Friday night we'll
add to that the sound of roaring motors and and a lot of
raw horsepower. This will be the first time that the
MSPA has visited Clinton Kentucky. There is a good
history of pulling in Western Kentucky and the Clinton
area. Clinton is home to current puller Keith Slayden
and former pullers Kenny Davis & Red Grogan.
The Mid-South Pullers Association is rolling into
August and is headed to Hillsboro, TN. On Saturday
night August 2nd the dust will start flying for the 8th
annual Hillsboro Truck and Tractor pull. The
proceeds from this Class “A” event will benefit the

Western Kentucky State Fair (Hopkinsville, KY)
The Western Kentucky State Fair pull has always been one of my
favorites. I remember attending the fair when I was younger and still look
forward to the event every year. This year was no exception. The only concern
was the weather for the Friday night show. Western Kentucky was (and is)
notorious for storms on the 4th of July so the concern was real (at least in my
mind). During the drivers meeting we watched the rain move around the fair
and thought that things would go on schedule. Tom McConnell was there to
present the Mid-South with a $10,000 check for our points fund from our new
sponsor "Total Lubricants". Everything looked good until the National Anthem.
Nothing was wrong with the National Anthem and it was sung to perfection. It
was the 30 minute rain storm that followed. After the rain, Alvin Schmits and
company worked the track back into shape and before we got started we got to
see a 30 minute fireworks display.
The first class of the evening was the 9,300# Super Farm tractors. The question of
how good the track was going to be was answered when Greg Freeze, Cranford
Jennings, Russell Counce, and Audra Stratton all made full pulls. Darrin Hunt made a
great pull in front of his hometown crowd but missed the pull-off with a run of
307.11' to finish in fifth. The pull-off started the way they went out the gate. First
up was Greg Freeze with Deere Traxx and set the mark to beat at 307.22'. Cranford
Jennings was up next with Bare Bones Binder. Cranford has really stepped it up and
has been giving the class fits. Bare Bones Binder was a little light on the nose
causing Jennings to ride the brakes and his run came up short at 294.88'. Dixie
Deere was up and Russell Counce was looking to continue the success the double
"D" team has had this year. The Dixie Deere shot straight and long out into first
place with a run of 320.44'. Last up in the pull-off was Audra Stratton. The
Deerelirious John Deere made a good pass that was good enough for third (295.50').
The 6,000# PSFWD Trucks were up next at the fair. Denny Ritter drew the first hook
and took the DangerZONE Chevy out to 299.31'. Thomas Cottrell followed Ritter with
his dodge named Burnin' Cash. Cottrell made a great pass out to 317.29 and a floating
finish line was established. Denny Allen drove his Ford F250 down the track and
finished behind Burnin' Cash with a distance of 316.23'. It now was down Brad Fowler
and Jerry McKinney from nearby Elkton, Kentucky. Brad Fowler flew down the track
with the Eliminator Ford and into the lead with a pass of 329.50. Could Jerry
McKinney and Code Blue get it done? Jerry McKinney looked like he was blasted out
of a cannon as he raced down the track. When the laser did its job Code Blue was .29'
ahead of the Eliminator giving Jerry the victory.
Bob Barbee started the 6,000# Super Stock class when he took
Stormy (kinda ironic for the stormy beginning) out to 270.73'. The sled
was tight but it was official. Rob Bonino, from nearby PeeDee,
Kentucky, was up on International Incident. An unfortunate sneeze
from the tractor ended Rob's run at 185.71'. Cody Haney was in the
driver's seat of J.R. and did a great job of taking the big Allis on a run of
256.02'. Monica Shaw made a nice pass on Beauty & the Beast and
finished the night in third with a pull of 350.40. Don Head & Head's up
was the last hook of the class. Could he knock of Stormy? The Head's
Up tractor had plenty of RPM's but could not get hooked up to the
track. Don finished up in forth with a pass of 234.32'.

Western Kentucky State Fair (Hopkinsville, KY) cont...
The 10,000# Pro Stock tractors were the fourth class to hit the track at the
Western Kentucky State Fair. I feel that this class had some impact on the
weather since it included Hurricane Allis & Bryce Van Genderen (Geared
Green). Bryce told me that his first five (I believe) events were rained out.
He had to travel over 4,000 miles before he got his first official hook. The
good news was the fair pull was delayed but not rained out. Michael Fanning
got the class started with a great run out to 319.33'. The officials determined
that a floating finish was in order. Elvin Domann followed Fanning with a run
that had some hurricane winds behind him. Hurricane Allis pushed the mark
to 326.61'. Philip Parish had his turn at the weather (El Nino) and the track
but could only manage a run of 303.68 that was good enough for a fourth
place finish. Bryce Van Genderen had a shot at victory late in the class. With
no rain in sight the Geared Green John Deere took the sled down to track
and finished in third with a pull of 313.41.
The motto for the Open FWD class on Friday night was "run what you
brung and hope you brung enough". Larry Douthit twisted the Big Daddy
Magic dodge hard and set the mark at 318.65'. Now he had to set back and
watch the rest of the class. The first test was Sandy Bugg & Black Magic.
Sandy made a good pass but fell short at 312.68. Randy McConnell was up
and he usually runs strong on the Hoptown track. But, Randy also fell short
with a pull of 311.06. Shane Greer was next with Super Chevy and if he was
going to win he had to push his truck hard. Shane called on the motor but
something kept the Super Chevy from getting the much needed RPM's and
Shane fell into fourth with a run of 291.24'.
The last class of the night was the heavy supers. John Orndorff started off the class with a
strong run of 269.60'. Ryan Henley was next driving Another Night Trouble. Out of the hole
the nose of the big IH 1006 went skyward and Ryan hit the wheelie bars a couple of times but
managed a pull of 266.40' on the high flying run. Monica Shaw had a squirrelly ride on Beauty
& the Beast and finished in third with a pass of 250.30'. Last hook of the class went to Joe
Wamble. Joe, co-founder of the Southern Invitational, never got the Wampuscat to hook to
the track and finished in fourth with a run of 213.46'.

Tanner, AL - July 25th & 26th
The Tanner, Alabama pull is one of the best pulls that you'll find anywhere in the Us.
They have a large facility and can handle lots of people and equipment. This year was no
exception. The only issue was there was a chance of rain for both nights. Friday night there
was a near capacity crowd on hand to witness the pull. We got through the first class and
into the Open FWD trucks when the bottom fell out without warning. The track crew did a
great job covering the track and after a hard 40 minute rain it only took about 30 minutes
to get back to pulling. Saturday night was a beautiful (but hot) night of pulling action. The
following will be an attempt to give a little coverage to both nights of pulling action.
Friday night started off with the 9,300# Super Farm tractors. Jared Bradley and David
Spry were the first pair down the track and it was determined that the sled needed to be
lightened up and the class was restarted dropping Bradley and Spry to the end of the class.
Dave Gambill was the first official hook of the night. The Money Grabber IH 1066 went in
the books at 270.95' good for 8th place. Russell Counce and Cranford Jennings both had
uncharacteristic runs and finished in fifth and tenth respectively. Larry Dean followed Jennings and had a great "ride" on The Ride out
into the lead with a pass of 286.63'. Harold Gambill had a great pull of 283.49' to finish the night in third. Jared Bradley gets his
second chance on the Alabama clay track and finished in fourth with a pull of 283.28. Last hook of the class belongs to David Spry.
Larry Dean is still in the lead but will it hold? David Spry and his tractor call the "Red Hooker" plowed down the track and the
competition with a pass of 294.65' and took the win dropping Larry Dean into second. On Saturday night Jon Hancock got the victory
on Green Fiend.
The Open FWD trucks were up next and started with a little bit of
smoke. Yes, I said smoke. Daniel Grey was first hook with his diesel truck
and made a nice pull out to 258.32'. Randy McConnell got hooked up and
shot straight down the track and into first with a pull of 299.57' in the new
Yellow Fever. As they were getting ready to call
the next truck to the line it started to sprinkle.
The sprinkles only last a few seconds then it
came down in buckets. After about an hour
delay we were ready to get back to pulling.
Mike Rhodes was first hook after the rain delay.
Mike has a diesel truck called Chain Smoker and
made a strong pass out to 288.91 where he finished in fourth. Black Magic, driven by Sandy Bugg, made a
good run of 294.13 good enough for third. Shane Greer was the last hook of the class. The Super Chevy had
a straight pull with a lot of ground speed but couldn't overtake Randy and finished in second with a pull of
296.36. Saturday nights winner was the daughter of Randy McConnell. Brooke McConnell bested the
competition on what I believe is only her second time behind the wheel. Congratulations to ! And Randy,
you better watch out 'cause you can be replaced.
Friday night in the 6,000# super stock we saw an old driver back in the saddle again. I hate to call her old because she's far
from old but has been out of the seat for a few years. Brandy "Essary" Cherry drove Evening Thunder on an awesome pass and a win
on Friday night. Congratulation to Brandy! Saturday night was a rough night on the
pullers and has started a slight points shake up. This season is getting interesting. Cody
Haney was test hook following a reset. J.R. started drifting to the left out of the hole.
Cody got on the breaks and J.R. being the bad character he is (Dallas) got a little wild
giving Cody a good bell ringing. They dropped the pull and came back later in the class.
On that attempt Cody made a good pass and finished in third with a run of 278.22. Kevin
Essay was back in the driver's seat on Saturday night. Could there be some pressure on
him after Brandy won Friday night? If there was it didn't show as he piloted the big Case
out to 296.97' and the lead. Bob Barbee had a good run going but flirted with the chalk
line a little too much resulting in a DQ. Don Head, looking to gain ground on Barbee, was
up and made an explosive run (literally) and coasted out to 171.32'. I hear the Head's Up
tractor could be renamed "Great Balls of Fire"! Larry Gorham finished in second with a
late hook in the class with a pull of 282.51.
Tanner, AL - July 25th & 26th (cont...)
The PSFWD truck class is usually one of the most competitive and
represent the big three - Ford, Chevy, & Dodge. Friday night the class was
started by Denny Allen and his Ford F250. Denny had a good run but
thought they could get some more distance and they dropped the pull
and would come back last. Jerry McKinney was next and would get the
first measured distance to go into the books. The Code Blue Chevrolet set
the mark to be at 299.39'. Totally confused Winston Glover made a pass
of 293.08 that place him in fourth place. Thomas Cottrell was up in the
Burning Cash dodge and finished behind Glover with a pull of 292.29'.
The Eliminator Ford got the RPM's screaming as Brad Fowler flew down
the track and into the lead with a pull of 311.56'. Denny Allen hooked last
after turning down the test hook. The big Ford made a great pass put was
short of Fowler with a run of 303.86'. Saturday night Brad Fowler
complete the sweep of the PSFWD class with a winning distance of 320.12'.
Friday night's crowd saw something a little different in the 8,000# Super Stock class.
Tennessee Track made a pass without smoke. Jacob Fuqua was the first hook and drove
the smokeless Tracks out to a distance of 295.65'. Tennessee Tracks didn't run flawless
but looks to be a force in the future. Kenneth Hale followed Jacob with the IH 1066
called "Another Nite Trouble". Kenny got a little bit out of shape early in the run and had
to get on the brakes (he also got some body english help from Nan) and took over the
lead with a pull of 304.53'. Randy Head finished up the class with a pull of 296.85' edging
Jacob for the second place finish. Saturday night saw John Orndorff take the win on
Stormy with Brandon Hunt coming in second after finding a soft spot in the track that
slowed down what looked to be a winning pass.
Larry Douthit and Papa Bear took the class to task on Friday night. When Larry
let off the throttle the big red C Cab truck was way past the full pull mark with a distance
of 316.73'. The officials deemed a floating finish was in order. Will and Andy Teasley
rounded out the top three with the son (Will) beating the dad (Andy) with runs of 305.71'
& 301.40' respectively. Saturday night saw ten trucks compete in the class and with the
top three only 12" apart. Just like Friday night Larry Douthit was first hook but unlike
Friday night he only managed to get out to 298.01 and finished in fifth. Jacob Fuqua took
over driving duties from Andy Teasley in the HyTek truck and pushed into the lead with a
pass of 308.11'. Mark Ford was next to hook with the new Tremor Ford and took the lead
away from Jacob will a pull of 309.09'. Last hook of the class went to Keith Slayden. The
American Made Ford was straight and true and when he finished you knew it was going
to be close. Everyone waited for the laser measurement to be announced. 0.21' was the
difference in favor of Slayden earning him the victory with a pull of 309.30'.
Michael Fanning won the Friday night edition of the 10,000 Pro Stock class
with a pass of 312.66'. Saturday would prove to be a better track and competition
for Fanning who had the first hook of the night. Michael got all the Bad Habit IH
3688 had to offer and finished with a pull of 268.14'. Miles Stratton was up next
on Young Buck and managed a distance of 264.96 that was good enough for third.
Ken Couch got the Cotton Pick'n Deere hooked up and into the lead with a pass of
273.57' dropping Fanning to second. Philip Parish had a great run on El Nino but
couldn't crack the top three and finished in fourth with a pull of 257.16'. Also a
note of interest, it was good to see Gary Miller on the track this past weekend.
It was a great weekend in Tanner and was a successful end of a month of
pulling in July. The unfortunate and common theme was rain and I know we need
the rain but I just hope it stays away from our pulls on the weekends. I can only
hope (and pray)! I hope everyone had a great July and I hope to see you in
August.

Question: Does my rollcage have to be painted or powder coated before
you inspect it?
Answer:
Eddie Kerr *
(* Super Farm Turbo Inspector)
Yes, it must be mounted on the tractor and painted or powder coated
before we inspect it. The inspector has to put the sticker in place
themselves, we can't just hand them out. If we inspect it before you paint
it, you'll have to paint around it. Also, The rollcage certification is good 5
years from the date of inspection. Check the sticker and / or paperwork for
the date.
