Infestation
of bedbugs
widespread
in region
You probably hate reading
about bedbugs.
Believe me, I’m not too
crazy about having to write
about them.
But bedbugs are an
increasingly vexing problem
in our region. Orkin recently
ranked the ClevelandAkron-Canton area eighth
in infestations in the United
States; Terminix ranked
Cleveland 15th.
Granted, those rankings
are based on reports to the
pest control companies
and are skewed to their
experiences and the places
where they operate. But
experts say there’s no dispute
that bedbugs are spreading
north in Ohio and that
infestations are widespread
enough to be troubling.
Last week, I had the good
fortune to attend a bedbug
update led by Susan C. Jones,
an urban entomologist at
Ohio State University and a
nationally recognized expert
on the creepy critters. Along
with a case of phantom
itchiness, I came away with
some good strategies for
battling the bugs.
First, the bad news.
There is no magic bullet.
People want a cheap and easy
solution, but Jones insisted
there is none.
Bedbugs — at least the
ones in our area — have
developed resistance to most
of the pesticides that are
considered safe for indoor
use today. While some
over-the-counter products
will kill bedbugs if you
manage to spray it right on
them, those products stop
working as soon as they dry.
So even though you might
be able to kill the bugs you
can see, multitudes of their
friends are hiding safely in
your box springs, behind
your baseboards, inside your
electrical outlets or in any
number of other places.
“These bugs are
unbelievable. … They’re the
ultimate survivor,” Jones said.
Now the good news.
The increase in bedbugs
is getting people’s attention.
And Jones said awareness
can go a long way toward
keeping the bugs at bay.
If we learn to recognize
signs of infestation and
get in the habit of taking
precautions to prevent the
bugs’ spread, we stand a
decent chance of keeping
them out of our homes.
Should the insects get in
anyway, our awareness will
help us notice them faster
and boost our chances of
eradicating them quickly and
without great expense.
So what do bedbugs look
like?

“Wine is bottled poetry.”
— Robert Louis Stevenson
There’s something romantic
about good wine, something
convivial and indulgent.
It’s a beverage to be savored and
shared, a pleasure associated with
celebration and relaxation.
And for some people, it’s a
theme to decorate a room or even a
home around.
Wine-theme decor is growing
in popularity as the ranks of wine
collectors expand, said Marshall
Tilden III of Wine Enthusiast Cos.,
a wine-products seller in Mount
Kisco, N.Y.
Those collectors’ deep interest
in wine is being reflected in their
surroundings, said Tilden, the
company’s sales manager of wine
storage and wine accessories.
“People are just ensconced in it,”
he said.
That’s the case with Ann Marie
and Peter Spirk, who built a winetheme gathering space in the lower
level of their Bath Township home.
Ann Marie Spirk used to be a
sales representative for a wine
broker; her husband’s family
owns a home in the vineyards of
Austria’s wine region of Styria.
They met at a wine auction, “so
wine’s just a part of our life,” she
said.
The room, with a heavy table
and chairs at its heart, is a place
where the Spirks like to entertain
friends. They’ll put out a cheese
board, open a bottle and visit
around the table.
The couple was lucky to have
able guidance in creating the room:
Ann Marie Spirk’s father is Bath
interior designer Alan Garren.
Garren gave the room a winecellar feel with soft lighting, a
Spanish cedar ceiling, an antique
tile floor and walls of stucco and
stone. Hand-carved wood panels
represent the stops involved in
winemaking, and a likeness of
Bacchus, the Roman god of wine,
watches over the room from his
spot above a wine barrel that was a
gift from a friend.

Charcoal may get rid of odor
Q: I had anise bread in the freezer
compartment of a refrigerator in my
garage. The freezer stopped working
when it got cold, and the bread thawed.
Now I can’t get the anise odor out of the
refrigerator and freezer. Do you have any
suggestions?
— T.P., Wadsworth
MARY BETH
BRECKENRIDGE
A: I assume you’ve already cleaned the
refrigerator and freezer, but you may need
to clean them a few times. Be sure to clean everything,
including shelves, drawers, gaskets, the drain tube, the
drip pan and all the little crevices.
If the odor remains, you can try a strong deodorizing
product such as Smells BeGone spray or Odors Away.
Check bedding, hardware and hospital supply stores, or
order online.
Placing containers of clean cat litter, unused coffee
grounds or a few ounces of imitation vanilla (not real
vanilla extract) in the refrigerator and freezer may also
absorb the odor.
Or try this method recommended by Claudette Reichel,
an extension housing specialist with Louisiana State
University: Empty the fridge and run it for a couple of
days with nothing but a shallow pan of activated charcoal
in it. (I’d put a pan in the refrigerator section and one
in the freezer compartment.) If you can, reactivate
the charcoal every six to eight hours by heating it in a
350-degree oven until it’s hot.
Another method, recommended by the Michigan State
University Extension, is to pack the refrigerator and
freezer with crumpled newspaper. Set a cup of water
on the top shelf, or sprinkle the newspaper lightly with
water. Let the refrigerator run for five or six days.
If those measures still don’t work, the plastic of the
freezer’s interior walls may have absorbed the odor.
That’s when Reichel suggests repeatedly heating and
ventilating the interior walls to try to remove the smell.
Warm the walls with a hair dryer, hot-air popcorn
popper or portable convection heater that blows warm
air. Don’t leave the heater unattended or use a device that
gets so hot it could damage the walls.
Once the walls are warm, turn off the heat and
ventilate with a portable fan until they’re cool.
Repeat the process for several hours until the smell is
almost gone. Then you can try absorbing the rest of the
odor with activated charcoal.

learn how to plant in straw bed
Joel Karsten introduces readers to a simplified raisedbed growing method in his book Straw Bale Gardens.
The method involves planting food crops directly in
beds of straw with a small amount of planting mix instead
of planting in soil. The bale serves as a container, and the
straw provides nutrients to the plants as it decomposes
throughout the growing season.
It’s an inexpensive way to garden that eliminates
weeding and puts the plant at a raised height for less
bending, Karsten says. At the end of the season, you just
toss the bale onto a compost pile and start fresh the next
year.
Straw bales can be used to grow vegetables, fruits,
herbs and even flowers.
Straw Bale Gardens is published by Cool Springs Press
and sells for $19.99 in softcover.

Cheery dogwoods, early harbinger
of spring, prepare to bloom soon
sapsuckers busy boring
holes, feed on sap that’s
early food for migrating
hummingbirds to area
By Jim Chatfield
Special to the Beacon Journal
The weather remains
wintry though blizzards are
probably past, snowdrop
flowers peek forth and
buzzards have returned to
Hinckley Township. So, at
Ohio State University’s Secrest
Arboretum in Wooster, we
ask: if March has arrived shall
the blooms of corneliancherry
dogwood be far behind? Let’s
take a look at what is here now
and soon to come.
First, those corneliancherry
dogwoods. This small, often
multi-stemmed shrub or
small tree dogwood (Cornus
mas) is a cheery earlyseason harbinger of spring.
It typically displays its
chartreuse-yellow blooms
in Northeast Ohio in early
March, but the date varies
depending upon how warm
the spring is each year.
Last week, these dogwoods
were blooming at the
Cincinnati Zoo, I predicted
to my Sustainable Landscape
Maintenance class at OSU in
Columbus that it would bloom
there this week, and I suspect
it will blossom next week in
the Wooster and Akron areas.
Walking around Secrest
Arboretum in recent weeks,
our regular group has noticed
rows of small holes in trees
such as tuliptree. Not from
borer insects. Not anything
causing significant harm to the
trees. Not rogue maple tappers
with poor plant identification
skills. Instead these horizontal
rows of shallow holes are
actually known as sapwells,
created by yellow-bellied
sapsuckers, woodpeckers that
feed on the sugary sap in foodconducting phloem tissue in
the plant.
The sapsuckers feed on the
sap and any insects within, and
as entomologist and naturalist
Roger Downer notes, when
they return this year they will
also drum up needed early
season food for migrating
hummingbirds who use the
sugar to survive during lean
times until nectar is available
from spring and summer
flowers.
There is a lot more going
on out there now, such
as buds on trees like the
identifying clustered end buds
characteristic of oaks. There
are trees with great bark
features in winter, such as
birches and sycamores. Plants
are still mostly dormant, and
so are some plant parasitic
fungi.
Remember that you heard
it here first — rust actually
— Mary Beth Breckenridge
And one more: “To me
the definition of sustainable
landscaping is something
that persists over time
with minimal economic,
environmental and labor
expense. And also provides
environmental, health and
aesthetic benefits to its
surroundings. Practices in
sustainable landscaping come
with the least detrimental
effect on the environment
and aid in the persistence of
that landscape and the plant
life which makes it up. It is
the optimal use of natural
resources in the environment
in the most efficient way,”
wrote Mike Benedict.
They are a wonderful group
of students. So, to counter
making them sit in a room to
take their midterm last week,
we read the more experiential
tone of Walt Whitman from
Leaves of Grass:
“When I heard the learn’d
astronomer;
When the proofs, the figures,
were ranged in columns before
me;
When I was shown the
charts and the diagrams, to
add, divide, and measure them;
When I, sitting, heard the
astronomer, where he lectured
with much applause in the
lecture-room,
How soon, unaccountable, I
became tired and sick;
Till rising and gliding out, I
wander’d off by myself,
In the mystical moist nightair, and from time to time,
Look’d up in perfect silence
at the stars.”

The basics of property taxes
Cutler Real Estate opens
five offices in Central Ohio
(MS) – Paying property taxes is a necessary side effect of
home ownership. Across the
United States and Canada,
residents are required to pay
property taxes based on an
assessment of their homes’
value.
Taxes on land and the
buildings on it are one of the
biggest sources of revenue
for local governments. In
the United States, property
taxes are not imposed by
the states, but by the smaller
governing bodies in cities,
towns, townships, counties
and other jurisdictions. In
Canada, property taxes, or
milliage taxes, are levied by
the jurisdiction in which the
property is located. They may
be paid to a federated state or
a municipality or the national government. Sometimes
multiple jurisdictions may
tax the same property.
Tax rate determined by
location and market
conditions
Although the taxes are
mandated by a higher
governing power, the rate at
which you pay taxes could be
based on a very local assessment of the area in which
your house is located and the
current market conditions.
An assessor will visit a home
– usually prior to purchase
– and make a determination
on the percentage of tax to
be paid depending on the
condition of the home, the
improvements that have
been made and the climate
of the economy in your particular town or city. Property
taxes are usually calculated
by taking the assessed value
of your home and multiplying it by the tax rate that has
been determined by your
local government.
Ways to lower property
taxes
While no one can “legally”
escape paying property taxes,
there are several ways to
have them lowered. Getting
your home reassessed is one
such way. Individuals who
have reached a certain age
may be eligible for certain
discounts on property taxes.
But this may require a very
low income to qualify. There
are also some tax credits or
homestead exemptions that
may qualify you for a limited
assessed value on the property.
According to data from the
Tax Foundation and Forbes,
areas of New Jersey, New York
and Illinois boast some of the
highest property taxes. Residents of Hunterdon County,
N.J., paid on average $8,600
a year between 2005 and
2009. Those in Lake County,
Ill., pay around $6,500.
People living in Westchester
County, N.Y., can plan on
spending $8,400 per year.
Statistics indicate that homes
located in Ontario cities in
central Canada have the
highest property taxes. Toronto residents, for example,
pay an average of $3,900.
In this tough economy,
lowering property taxes
(which are generally rolled
into the mortgage amount
for ease of payment) could
substantially reduce bills.
As many as 60 percent of
properties across the United
States are overassessed,
according to the National
Taxpayers Union, a nonprofit
group that promotes lower
taxes.
If you suspect your property taxes are high, here are
the steps to take:
• Get a copy of your property
tax assessment from the local
assessor’s office and doublecheck all the information
contained to see if it is correct.
• Check the assessments of
five comparable homes that
have sold in your neighborhood in the last three years.
• An independent appraiser
can also provide you accurate
information at a cost. Make
sure he or she is licensed
with the National Association
of Independent Fee Appraisers or by the American
Society of Appraisers.
It’s not possible to lower
the property tax rate, just the
assessed value of the home
through an official appeal.
There may be fees associated
with this appeal, however.
Some home improvements will increase the value
of your home and, in turn,
your property taxes. Here are
some of the most common
culprits:
• Extra stories to the home
• Outbuildings, such as a
guest house
• Sports courts, like tennis
• Installation of an in-ground
pool
• Improvements to fencing
• Addition of a garage or another room on the home
An influx of new residents or
new construction of stores
and homes can have a major
effect on the assessed value
of your home.
Homeowners: Beware of
unsolicited mail offering
to reduce property taxes;
advice from the Summit
County Fiscal Office
A word to the wise: The
Summit County Fiscal Office and Office of Consumer
Affairs warns homeowners
who receive unsolicited mail
offering for a fee to help them
lower their property taxes to
know they may do the same
thing for free.
The Summit County Fiscal
Office’s Board of Revision
reviews complaints about
property values. To learn how
to file a complaint contact
the Board of Revision at
330-643-2631, or visit http://
fiscaloffice.summitoh.net/index.php/board-of-revisioncomplaint.
“It is important, especially
in these economic times, that
property owners know that
they do not need to pay a
third party to file a valuation
appeal on their behalf,” said
Kristen M. Scalise, Summit
County Fiscal Officer. “This is
a free service.”
Summit County property
owners can file an appeal
at no cost with the Board of
Revision.
By statute, complaint forms
can be submitted to the
Board of Revision after Jan. 1
but prior to the close of business at 4 p.m. on April 1.
A change in the status of a
neighborhood can also give
rise to higher property taxes.

Seniors: Beware
of Medicare
phone scam
A message from the
County of Summit Office of
Consumer Affairs
Northeast Ohio
residents need to
be on the alert as
several seniors have
reported receiving
telephone calls from
individuals claiming
to be representatives
of Medicare trying to
get personal information under the guise of updating or renewing Medicare cards.
The bogus caller claims to be from Medicare verifying the
consumer’s name, address, and telephone number and date
of birth to issue new Medicare cards. The caller also asks
for additional information such as the name of your bank
where your Social Security checks are deposited along with
your bank account numbers.
What should you do if you receive such a call?
“It is okay to interrupt the caller in mid sentence and say,
‘No thank you,’ and hang up,” said Cynthia Sich, director,
Summit County Office of Consumer Affairs. “If your telephone rings immediately thereafter, do not pick it up in case
it is the scam artist at it again.”
Seniors need to know that these criminals will try whatever means it takes to get your personal information. They
will attempt to appear legitimate by telling you they have to
transfer the call to their supervisor if you do not answer the
questions or explain that you will receive a follow-up call.
Sich wants to remind everyone to never give out personal
identifiable information over the telephone, especially in
cases in which you did not place the call. It is also important
to remember that Medicare does NOT call beneficiaries to
verify information because they already have it.
For specific questions about Medicare, call 1-800-6334227, or visit ww.medicare.gov.
For more information on this or other types of scams,
contact the Office of Consumer Affairs at 330-643-2879, or

Create a home inventory for insurance
By Tony DeLuke, president, Akron Area Board of Realtors
It is a good idea to create a
home inventory before disaster
strikes to make filing an insurance claim a smoother process.
Don’t rely on your memory to
keep track of your possessions.
Create an inventory so you can
know what’s missing if you ever
need to file a claim.
Experiencing a theft, flood,
fire or other casualty loss is
devastating enough. Now
imagine trying to list from
memory for your insurance
claim every single item that
was damaged or destroyed.
The task becomes less daunting if you create a home inventory in advance and keep
it in a safe place.
Creating a home inventory can be done with pencil
and paper alone, but a digital
camera and camcorder make
the job easier. Set aside
enough time to review your
insurance policies, find
receipts, document your possessions and figure out where
you’ll store your records.
A home inventory is essential and includes appliances,
plates and glasses to collectibles, rugs and furniture. The
average home is packed with
an array of items collected
over the years. And while you
may be able to list many of
them in a pinch, chances are
you’d miss some important
possessions if you ever needed to reconstruct your home’s
contents from memory.
Your job doesn’t end once
you’ve compiled a home
inventory. Be sure to compare
estimated values to your policy’s coverage to ensure that
you’ll be able to replace your
belongings in case of damage
or theft. Purchase additional
coverage if the value of your
possessions exceeds the limits
on your homeowners, flood,
or other disaster policy.
Take photos and video
of possessions
A picture can be worth more
than just a thousand words–it
can add up to thousands in
cash if you ever need to file
an insurance claim. Using a
digital camcorder or camera,
take pictures of each room to
document your belongings.
Homeowners can literally
walk from room to room and
record narrative descriptions
of items. You should note
whether something is an antique, for example, or if it has
other qualities that make it
especially valuable such as the
size of a television screen or
the type of stones in a piece of
jewelry. Get close-up shots of
serial numbers on electronics,
power tools and the like.
Document vital statistics
Filling in a printed checklist
with serial numbers, brands,
quantities and estimated
values will prove indispensable if an insurance claim ever
needs to be filed. The adjuster
will likely ask for such a list
and you can use the video
or photos as proof of ownership.
Keep your home
inventory safe
Of course, such documentation is useless if
it’s destroyed in a natural
disaster, consumed by fire
or stolen along with your
personal computer. Be sure
to store the files you create
on an online backup service
such as Carbonite.com or
iBackup.com in case your
home is destroyed. Services
such as these typically start
at about $10 per month.
Another way to protect your
information is to save it on a
USB (thumb) drive that’s kept
off site in a safe-deposit box or
at a relative’s home. Store an
extra copy in your “emergency
bag,” which should include
essentials your family needs
in case you’re forced to flee on
short notice.
It’s also a good idea to keep
a file with receipts and any
appraisals of valuable items
you own. Store these documents off site as well. Remember, the more documentation
you have to prove what you
owned and what it was worth,
the easier the claims process
will be.

What a REALTOR® Can Do For You
The REALTOR® you work with could be one of your most valuable resources.
A REALTOR® can help you determine how much home you can afford. Often a REALTOR® can suggest ways to
accrue the down payment and explain alternative financing methods.
A REALTOR®, in addition to knowing the local money market, also can tell you what personal and financial data
to bring with you when you apply for a loan.
A REALTOR® is already familiar with current real estate values, taxes, utility costs, municipal services and
facilities, and may be aware of local zoning changes that could affect your decision to buy.
A REALTOR® can usually research your housing needs in advance through a Multiple Listing Service--even if you
are relocating from another city.
A REALTOR® can show you only those homes best suited to your needs--size, style, features, location, accessibility
to schools, transportation, shopping and other personal preferences.
A REALTOR® often can suggest simple, imaginative changes that make a home more suitable for you and improve
its utility and value.
A REALTOR® is sensitive to the importance you place on this major commitment you are about to make. Look for
a real estate professional to facilitate negotiation of a win-win agreement that will satisfy both you and the seller.

Rainscaping solves storm runoff
By capture and reuse,
homeowners beautify,
conserve, cut erosion
By Dean Fosdick
Associated Press
Stormwater runoff can
quickly drain a homeowner’s
wallet. The flooding erodes
yards, soaks basements,
pollutes streams and wastes a
precious resource.
But rainscaping — an
integrated system of directed
water flow and settling basins
— can convert those losses
into gains by providing new
wildlife habitat, beautifying
properties and in some cases
providing food.
“It’s becoming a pattern of
capture and reuse rather than
simply moving the water off,”
said Pat Sauer, Rainscaping
Iowa Program administrator.
“There are more options
out there than just rain
gardens. We’re looking more
comprehensively at what can
be done on the landscape.”
Numerous state and local
groups are holding workshops
and providing rebates for
residents who add such
refinements to their properties
as rain barrels, cisterns,
permeable paving, settling
ponds, green roofs and berms.
“Many of these agencies
also build large-scale
infiltration systems projects
on public lands,” said Cleo
Woelfle-Erskine, who wrote
Creating Rain Gardens with
Apryl Uncapher.
Landscapers often merge
art with science. “In Portland,
Ore., many parking lots and
curb strips sport swales
[depressions] and retention
basins, often decorated with
sculptures of leaping fish,”
Woelfle-Erskine said.
Rainscaping, though, can be
expensive and complicated. So
why bother?
“A rain garden is not only
a beautiful, low-maintenance,
water-saving garden, but can
additionally provide habitat
and forage for local fauna,
sustain select edibles for
harvest, reduce pollution,
flooding and erosion to nearby
rivers and become a daily
reminder of the importance
of water conservation,”
Uncapher said.
Yards vary, and rainscaping
designs must be site specific.
Some suggestions:
• Perk. Conduct a soil
test to see if your yard will
percolate (drain) rainwater,
Sauer said. “If it doesn’t perk,
then all you’ll be left with is
standing water. If your yard is
hard, like concrete, you’ll have
to improve the soil.”
• Plant native. Plants
with deep roots help soak up
stormwater, filter pollutants
and recharge groundwater
levels, Sauer said. “Using
native plants also helps ensure
they’ll survive their new
setting.”
• Installing a residential
rain garden, which is a
saucer-like depression in the
ground that captures rain
from a downspout, driveway
or patio, is the simplest and
least expensive way to retain
stormwater, Woelfle-Erskine
said. But here’s his kicker:
“They won’t work if your yard
is uphill from your house.”
• Use permeable materials
like bricks, paving blocks
or gravel on driveways and
walkways, with spacing that
allows water to seep into the
soil.
• Edibles. Berries,
asparagus, fiddlehead ferns,
fruit trees, winter squash,
Brussels sprouts, and culinary
and tea herbs can be creative
additions in the right rain
garden sites, but use them with
care. “Be aware of where the
water is flowing into your rain
garden from,” Uncapher said.
Rain gardens and related
rainscaping features give
homeowners a chance to
be part of the stormwater
and pollution solution,
while serving aesthetic and
functional purposes, said Bob
Spencer, RainWise program
manager for Seattle.
“[The gardens] are
protecting our water bodies
and the creatures that live
there,” he said.

Vellum lampshades that
turn wine glasses into candle
lamps are new from online
marketplace Daily Grommet.
Interior designer Diahann

which fit atop a standardsize glass and can be stored

nonflammable LED votive
candle into a glass, top it
with a shade, and you have
a flickering lamp perfect for
adding ambience to a dinner

Accents made from wine
corks are especially popular,
Tilden said. Kits are available
for turning corks into trivets,
wall hangings, serving trays
and even table tops. The
Spirks created a backsplash for
their kitchen organizing center
by using hot glue to attach
corks they’d saved, including
the cork from the first bottle
they shared.
The trend is so big
that Wine Enthusiast sells
decorative containers to hold
corks until you’re ready to use
them, Tilden said. And if you
want instant gratification, the
company will even sell you the
corks, he said with a laugh.

The best description I’ve
heard is an apple seed with
legs. The adults are about that
size, shape and color.
But don’t expect to find the
bugs themselves. They hide
during the day in any tiny
space they can find and come
out at night to suck our blood.
Yeah, I know. Gross.
What you need to learn to
recognize, Jones said, is the
evidence of their presence.
Itchy, red welts from bites
are an obvious clue, but not
everyone reacts that way
when they’re bitten, she said.
And not all bites are caused by
bedbugs.
That’s why it’s important
to recognize other signs of the
bugs.
Probably the easiest to spot
are the black dots of their
feces. Those dots point to the
places bedbugs hang out. Often
the black spots are found on
mattresses and box springs,
particularly along the welting;
on the bed frame; and behind
the headboard.
But bedbugs don’t always
live on beds, and their fecal
spots can be found just about
anyplace that’s near where
humans sleep or spend a lot of
their time.
Look behind pictures on the
wall, along baseboards, around
window and door frames,
in drapery pleats, under the
bed skirt, around outlets and
switch plates, in the drawers
of night stands and along the
edges of carpet.
Check your couch or
favorite easy chair and the
area nearby.
Look from floor to ceiling,
Jones counseled. Bedbugs like
warmth, so they’re often found
high in a room where the
rising warm air reaches.

The room also
demonstrates the importance
the couple places on family
and friends. A wine press
similar to one Ann Marie
Spirk’s grandfather used
stands near the entrance to
a temperature-controlled
storage cellar, and winerelated photos of friends and
relatives decorate one wall.
Although the room has
plenty of space for storing
wine, its purpose isn’t to save
the bottles for the long term,
she said.
“We’re not collectors,” she
said. “We like to enjoy it.”
Enjoyment is central to the
reason so many wine lovers
are surrounding themselves
with reminders of their
passion, Tilden said.
He believes the trend is
fueled by the increase in
wineries around the United
States that are producing
quality products. People who
travel to those wineries and
enjoy their visits often want to
reproduce that experience in
their own homes.
When they spend good
money on wine, they want
to make sure they store it
properly, so they’re investing
in racks, coolers and other
storage units, Tilden said. A
wine rack that’s beautiful as
well as functional lets them
treat wine as a decorative
accent, not just a beverage.
And it lets them show off
a little, too. “There is a flash
factor,” he said.
Wine decor expands
beyond the primarily
functional, though.
Aficionados can decorate
their homes with any number
of wine-inspired accents —
chandeliers made from bottles,
coffee tables made from wine
barrels, lazy Susans and wall

A bed bug is displayed at the Smithsonian Institution National
Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
Other signs are white eggs
resembling sesame seeds,
which are stuck in place by
a glue the female produces;
shed skins and eggshells; and
bloodstains that result when
the bugs are crushed.
Obviously you want to
keep an eye out for these
signs in your home, but you
should also search diligently
for them when you stay in
a hotel or other overnight
accommodation, Jones said.
If you find evidence of
bedbugs, ask to be moved to
a room in a different part of
the hotel. Don’t accept a room
that’s next to the infested one
or directly above or below it,
because bedbugs can travel
through walls, floors and
ceilings.
Even if you don’t find any
signs of bedbugs, don’t let your
guard down. “I’m good [at
inspecting],” Jones said, “and I
miss bedbugs.”
That’s why she strongly
advises taking precautions
with your luggage and
belongings so you don’t
unwittingly take home a
hitchhiker.
Don’t put the suitcase on a
bed, on the floor or on a piece
of upholstered furniture, she
said.
Use a luggage rack instead,
but only after you’ve checked
it for signs of bedbugs. Better
yet, put the rack and suitcase
in the bathtub.
Keep your clothes in your
suitcase instead of moving
them to a chest of drawers,
and keep the suitcase zipped.
Even the closet can be suspect,
she said. If you need to hang
clothes, use the shower curtain
rod.
When you get home,
inspect your luggage and then
store it far away from living
and sleeping areas, possibly in
the garage and preferably in a
tightly closed plastic bag.
Hotels aren’t the only place
you can pick up bedbugs,
though. Your child might
bring them home from school
in a backpack. You might have
them crawl into your purse or
the treads of your sneakers at
a theater.
Even brand new clothes can
harbor bedbugs, especially if
someone else took them home
said.
She said the space will be
decorated in greens and plums,
with a counter-height table
made from an unrefined slab
of wood, cubbies for wine and
artwork of wine bottles and
glasses. A seating area near
the fireplace will incorporate
dried grapevine with silver
pods for the contemporary
edge that is Garth Andrew’s
signature.
Andrew is considering
adding a chandelier made
from wine bottles, or maybe
one made from wine glasses.
“It’s been fun to look for
these things and find them,”
she said.
Fun, after all, is what wine
decor should be all about.

to an infested house and then
returned them.
I’m not trying to make
you panic or turn you into a
hermit. I just think it’s best to
realize that bedbugs can come
from just about anywhere, so
you’ll stay vigilant.
Luckily, you probably have
a bedbug prevention device
right in your home. It’s your
clothes dryer.
Heat kills bedbugs, so use
your dryer in a proactive way,
Jones advised. She always
launders and machine-dries
her clothes as soon as she
returns home from a trip, and
you might even want to pop
new clothes or other dryable
items into the machine as
soon as you get home from the
store.
A half-hour on high heat
will do it, she said. Some
dryers have a rack inside that
can be used to heat shoes and
other items that shouldn’t be
tumbled.
Be careful about bringing
secondhand items into your
home. Put them in the dryer
if you can; inspect them
carefully if you can’t.
I’ve been told by another
bedbug researcher that in
hot weather, you can heat
items enough to kill bedbugs
by encasing them in a dark
garbage bag and leaving them
in a hot car for a few hours.
Designate a place for kids
to keep their backpacks that’s
away from the bedrooms. It’s
not even a bad idea to keep
them in a plastic tote with a lid
that can be sealed.
But what if it’s too late?
What if you already have
bedbugs?
We’ll get to that next week.
Stay tuned.

What to look for in
outdoor furniture
(MS) – Outdoor entertaining areas
have always been popular among
homeowners. The ability to entertain
friends and family or simply relax by
yourself is something homeowners
cherish, particularly during the warm
weather seasons. Finding the right
furniture to match your outdoor area,
be it a deck, patio or poolside lounging
area, is essential to making the most
of this special area of the home. When
shopping for outdoor furniture, consider
the following.
should a storm suddenly appear and it
won’t require the entire household to
help move the furniture into and out
of the garage when inclement weather
arrives.
Weight: Unlike furniture inside the
home, outdoor furniture will be moved
around quite frequently, such as to
protect it from inclement weather or
changing seasons. As a result, the weight
of the furniture bears importance.
While you don’t want furniture that’s too
lightweight and will blow away any time
a strong gust of wind comes along, it’s a
good idea to choose furniture that isn’t
too heavy. This makes it easier to move
Comfort: The whole idea behind an
outdoor entertaining area is to have a
relaxing place to spend time outside. So
be sure to choose furniture that’s comfortable and can handle the elements.
Metal furniture, for example, might be
durable, but such furniture can also get
very hot if out in the sun.
Versatility: Many
homeowners enjoy
changing their home’s
interior decor from
time to time, and it
can be just as enjoyable to do the same
to a home’s exterior
decor. That said, look
for furniture that can
be accented with a variety of accessories, so you can change the look of your
outdoor entertaining area easily.
Protection: Protecting exterior furniture from the elements should be a
priority. When shopping for outdoor
furniture, figure out if protective covering is available or if it will need to be
custom made. The latter alternative can
be quite expensive, so you might want
to consider more generic furniture that
comes with standard protective coverings to make it more affordable.

would I become a Realtor, and is that different
QHow
from a real estate agent?
A
To become a Real Estate Agent in Ohio you must take 120
hours (4 courses) and then pass a State and National Exam
to obtain your license. To work, you must also be associated
with a Broker. A REALTOR® is associated with The National
Association of Realtors, and abides by the Codes and Canons
of Ethics. Most Real Estate Agents are members of the NAR
and therefore known as REALTORS®
QIs a short sale the same as a foreclosure?
A
No. A short sale is when your mortgage holder (bank or other
institution) agrees to accept less than the total amount you
owe. A short sale avoids foreclosure. You must be able to
prove a financial hardship. It hurts your credit score less than
a foreclosure will. The homeowner still has the title to the
home throughout the sale. With a foreclosure, the bank has
full ownership.

Get creative with
extra space
By Melissa Dubravetz, advertising writer
I
f you’re lucky, your
apartment or rental
home may have a little more space than you
actually need such as an
additional bedroom,
basement area or formal
dining room. Granted,
extras like these are
probably the exception
and not the rule for
most renters. If you’re
one of the lucky renters,
however, making use of
your extra space can be
fun, as long as you have
an idea and a plan to
make it useful.
Work from home in your
home office
Working from home is a
much nicer experience if you
have a home office. Not only
does it give you a quiet place
to get things done, but it also
gives you a place to keep all
your work paraphernalia
together.
Whether you use an extra
bedroom for an office or simply carve out a niche in the
corner of your living room,
it’s important to make the
best use of the space. Consider purchasing a nice desk
and bookshelf, a comfortable
chair and furniture with storage capabilities for your office supplies and equipment.
Arrange your furniture to be

displaying photos and other
mementos that can clutter
a desktop. Frame and hang
work-related certificates.
Put up a bulletin board in a
handy location for a calendar, notes, phone lists and
other information you’ll use
on a daily basis.
Get creative with a
craft room
If crafting or scrapbooking
are on your list of hobbies

on this property
330.645.2960 or 330.665.9400
or even part of your career,
you know that having a craft
room is essential to being
able to work on the projects
you have in mind. And while
some crafts are transportable, it’s not always easy to
work from the dining room
table or floor of the living
room. What’s more, having
a dedicated space for your
crafting and hobbies sometimes can inspire you to be
more creative.
Similar to a home office,
an ideal craft area has ample
storage space, a large table
or countertop, good lighting
and is inviting to its users.
Organize your supplies so
that they are easy to find, use
and put away. Incorporate
colors, patterns and elements
in your craft area that inspire creativity. If your space
allows, you might want to
include a television or radio
to enjoy while you are hard
at work.

Give the kids a play
space of their own
Parents of young children
know that having a dedicated
play area or toy room can be
a blessing when it comes to
keeping other areas of the
home or apartment clean
and tidy. A room dedicated
to playing allows kids to do
what they do best – be kids.
If possible, keep your play
area or toy room clear of any
large furniture that takes up
space or can pose as a safety
threat to children. Come up
with a creative way to make
the space work for your
child’s interests. For example,
use half of the room for an
arts and crafts area with a
chalkboard, easel, desk and
other supplies. Use the other
half of the room for dolls, action figures and board games.
Toy chests, colorful cubbies,
shelves and footstools with
storage space can help keep
things somewhat organized.
Put down a colorful rug to
protect the carpet in your
playroom. Styles of rugs
come in all kinds of lively
designs, featuring streets and
houses, farmyards, checkerboards and other visuals that
stimulate the imagination.

Tips for selecting the right mortgage lender
Locating the home of your
dreams can be a time-consuming endeavor, but, when
it happens, most purchasers
are eager to close the deal as
quickly as possible. It is important, however, to remain
patient as you begin to arrange for financing. The key is
to take as much time as necessary to do things properly
and select the best mortgage
lender for your specific needs.
Mortgage professionals
should be extremely knowledgeable about a wide variety
of loan products and should
be willing to spend as much
time as necessary to explain
them. A good lender will want
to know how long you plan
to remain in your new home.
This type of knowledge helps
them suggest the mortgage
products that best suit your
needs.
Do some advance research
on loan options yourself. Having at least some knowledge
about the financing process
will help you decide whether
the mortgage lender you are
considering is a good fit.
Seek local lenders
Finding a mortgage lender
in your geographical area is
usually best. Because interest
rates can change on a daily
basis, a local lender is better able to remain attuned
to rapid changes in the local
housing market, and will always know how such changes
may affect his or her clients.
A local lender also allows for
closer monitoring of your
loan application as they will
be more readily accessible
to answer any questions a
potential home buyer may
have along the way.
Take advantage of personal
referrals
Word-of-mouth recommen-
dations offer a great way to
identify the very best professionals in your area. Once you
receive a few possible names,
take the time to verify their
professional backgrounds so
that you will feel confident
in their ability to provide the
sort of quality customer
service you desire.
