Though we look forward to Easter Sunday to celebrate the Risen Lord, Easter is a
season, not just one day. The 50 days of the Easter season lasts from Easter all the
way to the feast of Pentecost. The Church celebrates the season in many ways.
We see the liturgical colors that decorate the worship space change from the
purple of Lent to pure white which represents light, joy, triumph, and glory.
The Church celebrates the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist during
this season. Also, the readings proclaimed at Mass come from the Acts of the
Apostles. In the pursuit of seeing God present in the world, the usual practice of
reading the Old Testament is replaced by readings from the Acts of the
Apostles. These readings tell the story of the early Church and how our first
Church leaders, St. Peter and St. Paul, and many others, began to spread the
Good News “throughout Judea and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) In the
reading of Acts of the Apostles, we hear of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the
growing pains of the early Church, the struggles, the miracles, the persecutions
and the joy of serving the Risen Lord. Throughout these 50 days. we dive into
how the Holy Spirit guided the followers of Christ in those early days of the
Church.
These stories speak to us today as a sign of encouragement and hope. That same
Holy Spirit that was poured out on Mary and the Apostles in the Upper Room has
also been poured out on us through the Sacraments of Initiation. Easter is a time
that the Church, in her wisdom, has set aside for us to reconnect to those first
days that the Apostles experienced the Risen Lord. It is a reminder that God has
not abandoned us, nor left us on our own. Jesus Christ has conquered death and
sin and is alive and well and working in our lives. We are called to reflect on this
saving grace, thank God in His mercy and rejoice in the Lord! Alleluia!

As followers of the Lord, as disciples, we know that He will take care of us, that we are
safe in His Hands. It is this safety and security that can hold us up when we face the
challenges. It is comforting to know that the Hands that created the world created us
also, and it is those Hands that keep us safe and hold on to us always.

God, recognizing her need for a deeper love of Christ.
Notable contemplative, spiritual

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
A few days ago I was visiting a patient at Piedmont hospital. As I entered the
room I saw something unusual, the presence of two little children, a third grader
and a kindergartner. Let us call them Thomas and Luke (not the real names).
They were visiting their grandpa with their mother. During our conversation the
mother told me that they belong to the Cathedral parish and Thomas (third
grade) attends the parish school. His mother also said Thomas was one of the
altar servers for Msgr. McNamee’s Mass at four on the previous Sunday.
Obviously all of us, the grandparents of which the grandpa was the patient, the
children’s mother and I, turned all our attention toward the two little ones. As
our conversation progressed the little ones’ mother revealed that her third
grader started reading the whole Bible and has reached up to the book of Psalms.
When I felt the little ones were comfortable in answering my queries I posed a
question: Between you both who was going to be priest? To which while the
younger one looked at me not knowing what to say, Thomas responded “I don’t
know.” At this point I said to Thomas: “Don’t worry Thomas, you have plenty of
time. As you grow up God will show your way in life.”
These are the ways a faith-filled family sows the seeds of a God-centered life in
their children. Celebrating the faith regularly at one’s parish as a family,
encouraging the children in getting involved in the various activities at the parish,
teaching them about the faith and its basic tenets and living that faith in families
are some of the ways we can nurture vocations in our families. I was so impressed
with the parents of Luke and Thomas who make it a point to nurture in their
children an openness to listen to the call of God. Indeed, these are the ways the
parents become God’s instruments in nurturing vocations in the families.
The US Bishops’ Conference has the following to say about today’s observance:
“The purpose of the World Day of Prayer for Vocations is to publically fulfill the
Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his
harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). As a climax to a prayer that is continually offered
throughout the Church, it affirms the primacy of faith and grace in all that
concerns vocations to the priesthood and to the consecrated life. While
appreciating all vocations, the Church concentrates its attention this day on
vocations to the ordained ministries (priesthood and diaconate), to the Religious
life in all its forms (male and female, contemplative and apostolic), to societies of
apostolic life, to secular institutes in their diversity of services and membership,
and to the missionary life, in the particular sense of mission "ad gentes.”
The Cathedral Flower Guild is
seeking sponsors for the weekly altar
flowers. Both the sponsor’s name and
the name of the person being
honored will be printed in the
Sunday bulletin on the weekend the
flowers appear on the altar.
The cost of sponsorship is $150 for
the main altar; $100 for each side
altar; and $60 for the Parish Hall. The
Flower Guild will select the
arrangements; and the colors will be
compatible with the Cathedral colors
and feast days. The Cathedral
arrangements will remain on the
altars for the following week.
If you are interested in learning more
about the program please contact
Cathy Thurmond,
[email protected]
or 404-352-3513.
Today marks the 53rd year of the observance of the World Day of Prayer for
Vocations. To continue the ministry of Jesus the Church needs vocations. Our
families should be the fertile soil for our children to discern their vocations. Our
children need to grow up in a family atmosphere where they witness the deep,
committed and unconditional love of their parents for each other. Looking
through the eyes of faith I can affirm only those couples who lead a
Christo-centric life can cultivate the afore-mentioned family atmosphere for their
children.

Pero, como Jesús sí resucitó, entonces sabemos que venció a la muerte y al pecado;
4TH SUNDAY OF EASTER
APRIL 17, 2016

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND CATHEDRAL
COMMUNITY
Dear Friends in Christ,
Welcome! On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy,
the staff, and the whole Cathedral community, I welcome you to
the Cathedral of Christ the King. I pray that as you step into the

join us and become part of this wonderful community. If you are
just visiting, it is a blessing to have you here and thank you for
worshiping with us. We hope you will come again.
