At the April 24th meeting
of the Foundation Board of
Directors, the Board formally approved the creation
of a Foundation House
Committee. This committee’s basic responsibilities
as outlined in its charter
are to:
• Serve as a sounding board
for member suggestions and
concerns on restaurant and
Community Center operations
• Review restaurant and
Community Center strategies and policies jointly
with management and
make appropriate recommendations to the Board
• Provide recommendations to the Audit and
Budget Committee for annual funding levels for the
restaurant and Community
Center operations
• Encourage organizations
within the community to
actively participate in and
sponsor events whether
social, educational, cultural or recreational at the
Community Center for
all members
• Recommend to the Facilities Committee, in conjunction with management,
improvements and/or enhancements to the restaurants and the Community Center.
Board member Ted Raia
accepted the Board of
Directors’ nomination to
serve as the first chairman
of the newly created committee. With the creation of
this new committee, the
Board ‘sun-setted’ the
Restaurant Advisory Group
that had been in existence
the past few years. If
you are interested in serving
on this new committee,
please contact Suzanne
at the Foundation Commons office.
In other Board action,
the Board approved the
installation of fiber optic
cabling from the Commons to each of the beach
restaurants and the South
tennis center. The Foundation currently uses rooftop
antennas at each location
to transmit data between
the outlets and the main
office, primarily to allow
the various point-of-sales
systems to communicate
with the main server located
at the Commons. The
installation of fiber optic
cabling will improve
communications, allowing
transmissions without
storm or wind interruptions, for example. This
new upgrade should insure
that service is not interrupted due to point-of-sale
breakdowns within the
day to day operations of
the restaurants.

Amendment to resale
capital assessment
Foundation Facilities Committee
seeks volunteer
By Sharon Gammell, Membership Coordinator
Do you have mechanical electrical engineering
and building experience?
On February 27, 2006, the
Board amended Section
7.04 Resale Capital Assessments (d) 2 of the Bylaws,
effective April 1, 2006.
Underlined is the amendment: “A Member shall be
entitled to only one exemption during the lifetime of
the Member. For example, if
a Member currently owns
a Dwelling Unit or Plot
within Pelican Bay, and
the Member subsequently
purchases another Dwelling
Unit or Plot, then the Member may be granted the
Exemption on the second
purchase. However, any
subsequent purchase or
conveyances
by
the
Member, after the Exemption has been used, will
not be eligible for the
Exemption. Additionally,
the individual beneficiaries
of a trust shall not be eligible
for the Exemption if the
trust has already received
one Exemption.”
The new one lifetime exemption limitation does not begin
until the date change approved
by the Board, thus prior exemptions do not count against the
new one exemption limit.
If you have any questions,
please call Sharon Gammell,
Membership Coordinator,
at 596-6180 Ext 238.

Passing the torch...
By Bill Bowden, Director of Operations: Community Center,
Tennis & Fitness
After 10 years of dedication and about 75,000 pancakes,
Scott Pitt and Bob Siefert, founders of the Habitat for
Humanity pancake breakfast fundraisers at the
Community Center, have decided the time has come
to turn over the program to new volunteers. Scott and
Bob look forward to enjoying the other side of the
table this fall, leaving the details in the capable hands of
Jane Ellsworth and Sally Salzer. Dates for the 2006-2007
series for the Sunday pancake breakfasts are: Nov. 19,
Jan. 21, Feb. 18, and March 18. The breakfasts are held
from 8am to noon and the $7 fee at the door is a donation
to Habitat for Humanity.

“I have a compliment

“We had a fantastic

These are common questions that come to the

Our responsibility is to
“field” questions and comments, then route them to
the appropriate department or manager. When
you want to make a comment, register a complaint
or send a congratulatory
message, please forward it

The communications and
member relations department’s guidelines state
that a response will be
sent to any correspondent
(whether it’s just to say
that your correspondence
has been received or with
a solution) within four
business days of receipt.
When issues are forwarded
to other departments for
consideration
and/or
response, the communications department follows
up with that department to
ensure a timely response.
Member input is key
to the satisfaction of all!
Please feel free to correspond with this office

Services Division
East of the berm project
The Services Division has
various responsibilities,
and among these are the
Mangrove Preserve, the
Clam Pass Estuary and the
Storm Water Management.
All three of these responsibilities are related by a
common element — water.
The Storm Water Management responsibilities
include maintenance of
the ponds, lakes, weirs,
culverts, fountains and the
actual retention areas. In
addition, the Club at Pelican
Bay controls a major water
retention area. (Those who
were here during Wilma
will recall the lake formed
on the driving range which
percolated into the ground
and drained into the storm
water system in three days)
The area east of the berm
is a major retention area.
Retention areas prevent
rain water from flooding
the mangroves by slowly
releasing water over a
period of time, acting as a
filter for pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers which
may flow into the area, and
thus, releasing stress on the
Mangrove Preserve.
The Services Division is
on the road to success in
eradicating the cattails
west of the berm, planting
native vegetation, and
providing an environment
for new mangroves and
fauna to emerge.
We now have the possibility of turning our attention to the Storm Water
Management areas east of
the berm, where we have
seen a proliferation of exotic
Brazilian Peppers and
invasive Willows. If we do
not address this problem,
we may soon see these
species overpower all other
native vegetation, as well as
the possibility of them
crossing the berm, invading
the mangroves on the other
side — a very undesirable
prospect. In fact, we already
have evidence of Brazilian
Peppers growing west of
the berm in various places.
Is this what we want?
It is absolutely essential that everyone clearly
understands that we are
not embarking on a wholesale landscaping of the
area east of the berm. This
is not our intent nor our

Halas a no-show at Hammock Oak debate

official calendar showed
no conflict.
Mike Coyne, president
of the PBPOA, served as
moderator of the debate.
Here is how the candidates who did show up
say they would deal
with issues of interest to
Pelican Bay.
Q. Would you oppose the
county’s plan to use private
property in Pelican Bay
to provide public access to
the beach?
A. Both candidates were
emphatic in their support of property rights.
Both said they would
oppose any attempt by
the county to access the
Pelican Bay beach through
private property.
Q. What are your views on
annexation and incorporation?
A. Foster and Lissack both
said they strongly supported the rights of residents to decide who should
govern them. Both opposed
county interference in
that decision.
Q. How do you feel
about the four-story parking garage along West
Blvd. now planned by
the developers of Waterside Shops?
A. Both candidates opposed the structure. (Applause
from the audience!) Both
indicated that site plan
approval should be required, with a public hearing as part of the process.
Q. Commissioner Halas
has admitted taking campaign money from contractors who do business
with the county. Do you
approve of this?
A. Lissack and Foster
both decried the practice. Both candidates said
they would decline such
contributions.
Q. What are your views
on Commissioner Halas’
representation of District 2?
A. Lissack said that Halas
represented Vanderbilt
Beach well, but not the rest
of District 2. Foster agreed.

Pelican Bay Mangroves
Mangrove update
By Kay Potter, Mangrove Columnist
A friend and neighbor
has taken me severely to task
for a statement in my last
column in which I quoted
Dr. Edwin Everham, professor of environmental studies
at Florida Gulf Coast University, as saying that hurricanes are necessary to maintain our global environment.
“Tell that to my son
in Mississippi,” he fairly
snorted. “Katrina has
already cost him a hundred
thousand dollars, and
he’s not done yet.”
My heart ached for him,
and for the countless others
who face tragedy and
hardship caused by recent
hurricanes. Although there
is no comparison, few in
Pelican Bay have totally
recovered from the effects
of Hurricane Wilma. Now
with foreboding, we are
beginning to prepare for the
coming hurricane season less
than a month from now,
June through November.
Thinking it would be
well to know more about
hurricanes, other than
the usual warnings and
weather reports, I started
to research the subject and
found it fascinating and
timely, and time consuming.
Two books that I thought
most informative are: The
Climate and Weather of
Florida by Professors James
A. Henry, Kenneth M.
Portier and Jan Coyne and
The Winds of Change by
award-winning journalist
Eugene Linden — hardly
light summer reading, but
too gripping to put down. I
will share with you now a
few facts gleaned from
these sources.
To begin with, Professor
Everham was right on. In
Chapter 8 of the first listed
book above, the authors
state that “Hurricanes
are necessary for the earth
to maintain an energy
balance” and explain that
in the parts of our earth
that are thirty-five degrees
north and south of the
equator, more heat is
absorbed from the sun than
is radiated from the earth
and atmosphere back into
space. If this extra heat is
not dissipated, this area
of our globe would be
constantly growing warmer.
Think about that for awhile.
Another section of the
book deals with Mother
Nature’s two-part solution
to this problem — the Gulf
Stream and the atmosphere. The Gulf Stream
carries some of this extra
Lissack agreed and questioned the effectiveness of
the district system.
Lissack discussed his
proposal to split Collier
County in two, with the
oortion west of Rte. 951 —
including Pelican Bay — to
be called Pelican County.
Lissack claimed that the
built-out western portion
of Collier County was
footing the bill for the
infrastructure of the developing eastern portion of
the county.
Foster discussed plans
for affordable housing, a
major problem, citing his
experience as head of the
Collier County Housing
Development Corporation.
Michael Lissack is a
former banker, author
and real estate developer.
Joe Foster is a local
attorney with the firm of
Porter Wright Morris
& Arthur.
Both Foster and Lissack
said they would welcome
the opportunity to debate
Commissioner Halas. Undoubtedly, the voters of
Pelican Bay would also
like to know Halas’ position on issues that impact
their community.
Straight Talk is an editorial
column prepared by the
Board of Directors of the
Pelican
Bay
Property
Owners’ Association. The
PBPOA is a separate, distinct entity from the Pelican
Bay Foundation Board,
and the PBPOA Straight
Talk column does not necessarily represent the opinion
of the Foundation.

hammock oak debate...continued from page 13
Q. Do you support the
proposal to roll back property taxes?
A. Both candidates said
that they did.
Q. Are you aware of
counties in Florida that
have a representative government structure that is
more effective than the
one used in Collier County?
A. Foster said that many
counties had commissioners elected at large.

Since growing up in southern rural Michigan, Gary

and to continue this “pumping” motion. The storm,
now greatly intensified, is
feeding on itself.
The authors conclude
by stating that if all these
conditions occur, and
others that space prevents
me from listing, a few of
these many seedlings may
develop into a hurricane,
starting in June in the
Caribbean and shifting
upward on the map as the
season progresses. Florida is
in the greatest danger in
August and September, but
no prediction is 100 percent
accurate. Remember, Wilma
arrived on October 24th.
Fortunately hurricanes
are not with us for long, the

The second condition is
that the tropical ocean
waters must be 80 degrees
or higher and produce
water vapor that reaches
the atmosphere. Since it
takes until summer for
the sun to heat the ocean
waters to this degree,
you now know why hurricane season is from June
through November.
A third condition is for
the winds to spiral into the
central area of our low
pressure disturbance and
escape out the top of the

heat to the cooler waters of
the North Atlantic, but it is
the atmosphere that disperses most of the extra
heat. When weather and
climate conditions are just
right, this dispersal produces hurricanes. Fortunately for us earthlings,
it takes a lot of doing for
these conditions to be “just
right.” Most of us think
Mother Nature outdid herself last year and devoutly
hope she will now take
some time off.
What are these conditions? First, there must be
a tropical low pressure
disturbance in the trade
wind belt (thirty degrees
north to five degrees north
of the equator). You can

average is nine days. Some
move rapidly, lasting only a
few hours. Remember how
fast Wilma moved out and
how thankful we were to
see brilliant sunshine and
calm weather by the afternoon of that fateful day.
Other hurricanes stagnate.
A twenty-day event has
been recorded.
Hurricanes die or decay
when they lose their major
energy source, which is
moisture and heat; encounter
colder waters or climes,
land masses or unfavorable
upper air wind flow. They
travel between 300 and
400 miles per day, change
directions, recurve, and
pick up speed again. No
wonder some of our young
TV weather reporters seem
somewhat ill at ease before
the camera for the map
they are pointing to can
change as they speak.
And there is more bad
news. Tornadoes, storm
surges and torrential rains
most often accompany
hurricanes, although a

few dry hurricanes have
been recorded in Florida.
When Wilma hit Pelican
Bay we were spared a storm
surge, really a fast moving
dome of water, and that
was most fortunate, for our
coast’s gently sloping sea
bottom would insure that
this dome of water would
increase in height as it
approached our beach.
We were not so lucky
in regard to tornadoes.
Experts who have visited
our area now think that
the irregular pattern of
felled trees in our mangrove
forests and damaged property, witness the Stratford
Condominium, is more
typical of a tornado hit
rather than the straight all
inclusive path of a hurricane. This was not unexpected. In Florida, more
than 70 percent of hurricanes produce tornadoes.
And now for the big
question, will a hurricane
strike us in 2006. And the
answer as expected is,
“Impossible to predict
P R E M I E R
with total certainty.”
Our scientists, computer
experts, and hurricane
hunting aircraft and pilots
are constantly studying
weather systems, not only
in our hemisphere, but
worldwide. They have
gotten very good at tracking a hurricane, once it
develops. They have charts
predicting the probability
of a hurricane striking
coastal cities. They study
El Nino, rainfall in the Sahel
region of Africa, global
warming. They have even
seeded clouds and spread
chemicals over warm
ocean waters.
Still, no one can tell you
exactly when and where a
hurricane will strike. Our
experts can only tell you
that one is expected and
you should prepare to meet
it on its own terms.
Enough said.

Pelican Bay Women’s League
By Joanne Hobin, Pelican Bay Women’s League President
Our annual meeting and

of a special Sante Fe Steak
Salad of greens, black bean
and corn salsa, tomatoes,

was served. Dessert was

Joanne Smith, Treasurer;
Pamela Etheridge, Recording Secretary; and Joan

pleasure to thank both the
outgoing board as well as
the incoming board for their
commitment to the League.
Invited guests at the
luncheon included Glenview

Marketing Director. In
recognition of Glenview’s
unselfish contribution, not
only to the Pelican Bay
neighborhood, but also to
the PBWL, a donation was
presented to Glenview for
their Employee Scholarship Fund.
Ending the program,
our own Songbird group
entertained us with their
signature song, Pelican Bay
Beach, the lyrics of which
were written by the late
Joyce Ann Vitelli. The
Songbirds lovingly dedicated this program to
Joyce Ann who had been a
Songbird for many years.
Accompanied by Evelyn
Mason, pianist/organist of
St. Williams Church, the
Songbirds continued their
program with a medley
of songs from Rogers and
Hammerstein. Their final
selection was the beautiful
piece, Let There Be Peace
on Earth.

The new Zoll Autopulse
Machine, recently demoed
by North Naples Firefighters displayed the
life-saving compressions

and health agencies throughout the country from
Houston to Wisconsin at
Station 45. Under the watchful eye of EMS Medical
Director, Dr. Robert Tober, a
scenario was presented to
the audience to provide a
closer look at the efficiency
and effectiveness of the
pit crew philosophy in
treating victims of a heart
attack using the Autopulse
machine, too.

Every second counts
when someone has suffered
from a heart attack and
remains unconscious as
family members wait for
first responders. Sometimes
a heart attack begins as
a feeling of radiating pain,
or of fullness in the chest.
Pain is even described as
a feeling of squeezing in
the chest, or it is an intense discomfort in the
chest that lasts for several
minutes. When 911 is dialed immediately, first responders will quickly arrive
to your Pelican Bay home
armed with a complete

Paramedic/Firefighter
Jodi Van Sickle was charged
with the responsibility of
presenting the roles to the
other paramedics, before
walking into the home,
while Dr. Robert Tober
quickly mastered the role of
the patient’s family member
as he frantically recalled
which drugs the patient
took as Jodi asked questions. Manual CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
started quickly by Engineer/EMT Nick Stolts
began the demonstration,
while Firefighter/Paramedic Javier Spirgatis started to use an ambu bag
to help the patient (manikin) breathe.
After two minutes of
CPR, the Zoll Autopulse
Machine was strapped
onto the patient’s chest
including a cardiac monitor
with AED capabilities. Once
the Autopulse replaced
manual compressions of
CPR, the paramedic/
firefighters then began to
simulate three separate
shocks to the patient. Each
shock provides jules of
energy to jump start the
patient’s heart back into
a normal heart rhythm.
After three shocks were
administered to the patient,
then she was ready for
transport to the hospital.
The Zoll Autopulse Machine
provided hands-free compressions to allow the paramedics to perform other
life saving tasks, such as
administering life-saving
drugs to stimulate the
patient’s heart.
Dr. Tober ’s pit crew
philosophy is easy to understand, as each EMT/Paramedic has a task similar
to the pit crew functions
found at unpredictable,
high-speed NASCAR races.
The race car driver has
minutes to get back on
track or lose the race. Those
crucial minutes could
make or break the race for
a driver. The pit crew
hurriedly fixes the highspeed machines, replacing
tires, repairing the spoilers,
adding fuel, and cleaning the windshield.
“In NASCAR, four people
each have a specific duty.
It looks like chaos, but
they can achieve success
quickly,” says Dr. Tober.
Ultimately, the success
with the North Naples
medical pit crew, is in a life
saved and a recovery of the
patient after treatment in
the hospital.
Just like the race car, the
human body is a fine tuned
machine, and paramedics
are assigned their tasks
prior to arriving at the
scene to assist the patient
expeditiously. Successful
saves from fire departments
and EMS agencies throughout Collier County with the
Autopulse provide the
Zoll Corporation with
valuable information regarding the efficiency of
this device in performing
chest compressions on an
unconscious victim.
“We had two cardiac
arrest saves with the Autopulse and twice the patient
had a pulse before EMS
transported them,” adds
ALS Coordinator, James
Cunningham.
Dr. Chris Souders, Associate Medical Director of the
Houston Fire Department
was impressed with the
Autopulse demonstration
by North Naples Paramedic Firefighters. With the
Houston Fire Department
averaging 800 to 900 calls
22 Pelican Bay Post, Mid May 2006
per day, Dr.
Souders clearly
identified the
need for these
machines on
their first-due
apparatus. He
is the deciding
factor behind
Houston Fire
Department’s
upcoming
participation in
an upcoming
trial study with
the Zoll Autopulse machine.
“There is an
advantage to
the Autpulse as
it stays on the
back board and it is the
same as CPR. Usually,
the medic is holding on
to a bar in the back of an
ambulance and attempting
one-handed CPR on the
patient. The Autopulse is
better because it provides
the same consistency
of compressions all the
time,” asserts Dr. Souders.
“There’s a cost-savings too,
as there’s a risk of back
injury when firefighter
paramedics have to perform
CRP for 45 minutes.” says
Dr. Souders.
In the past, CPR with
manual compressions and
the Automated External
Defibrillator alone sometimes restarted a patient’s
heart after firefighters and
paramedics arrived on
scene. There was a transfer
delay in the compressions
when the patient was transferred from the floor to the
backboard, too. The new
Zoll Machine straps on to
the patient and begins to
consistently provide compressions without stopping
until the patient is transported to the hospital.
These continuous compressions provide the
oxygen rich blood to the
heart and brain without
interruption. The streamlined process makes the
entire call a smooth effort
in saving lives.
“From the time a patient
loses consciousness, you
have eight minutes to move
oxygenated blood to the
brain. If you only do compressions on a patient, there
is enough residual oxygen
in the patient’s bloodstream, in the arms, legs
and stomach, that if you
simply move that blood
into the brain without any
mouth-to-mouth ventilations, you can keep the
brain alive for eight
minutes,” states Dr. Tober
of the essential technique
of compressing the patient’s
heart as soon as possible
following cardiac arrest.
Dr. Tober has a total
hands-on approach ensuring the Zoll Autopulse
machine is utilized properly
as he closely monitors all
of the training and medical calls traveling among
CCEMS Stations throughout all of Collier County. He
strives to ensure the timing
of response is efficient,
without any delay in the
initiation of CPR and use
of the Autopulse. The
evidence of successful saves
here has peaked the interest
of Zoll Corporation and
other fire departments who
are considering the purchase of these machines for
their own community.
Therefore, the pit crew
philosophy coupled with
the new Zoll Technology
will positively impact the
survivability of cardiac
arrests.
“North Naples Fire Control and Rescue District is
striving to place the Autopulse on all first-run
apparatus,” predicts Lt.
James Cunningham of the
future of the Advanced Life
Support Program in
North Naples.

Full-service personalized policing
An Urban Style Policing model
Don Hunter, Sheriff, Collier County Sheriff’s Office
What is Urban Style
Policing?
This full-service, personalized policing philosophy re-examines community needs based on
growth, crime and traffic
congestion so people can
feel safe where they live,
work, recreate and drive.
This policing model is
a tactical approach to fullservice, personalized policing. By realigning coverage
areas currently patrolled in
a district, a more manageable area is created that will
reduce response times to
calls for service and add
additional staffing during
peak call times.
How is Urban Style
Policing accomplished?
The philosophy of policing
focuses on education, enforcement and engineering
to accomplish the goal of
a safer community.
The “urban response
model” takes into consideration forecasts and data
supplied by various growth
and planning entities as
well as internal statistics
in order to “continue to
make Collier County a safe
place to live, work and
drive.” This resonates in
Sheriff Hunter ’s vision
for the Collier County
Sheriffs Office.
Districts are functionally
re-aligned based on optimizing staffing and expediting response to
citizen complaints. This
will increase our effectiveness in the services we
provide and efficiently
address the current challenges of growth, population, lack of proper
infrastructure, business
developments, construction, and public and member safety to create a greater
level of service with a more
fluid response.
What is the
impact to
the community?
This policing model
impacts the community by
providing a more rapid
intervention in situations
involving threats to life,
theft or destruction of property. The Collier County
Sheriff ’s Office is optimizing staffing and integrating law enforcement

Water, landscaping returning to Waterside Shops
Landscape design plan unveiled
Water and lush landscaping, the signature of
Waterside Shops at Pelican
Bay, Naples’ premier shopping destination, will soon
return. The center, which is
undergoing a major renovation adding luxury retailers such as Tiffany &
Co., Burberry and Gucci,
will feature a new landscape design that is more
shopper-friendly, inviting
and reflective of the contemporary and sophisticated
style of the new retailers
and Waterside’s clientele,
according to Annette
Alvarez, General Manager
of Waterside Shops.
“Next to questions about
the new stores that will
open at Waterside during
the next few months, we’re
constantly being asked
about the new landscaping
and water features,” she
said. “We are confident
Waterside’s updated look
will exceed everybody’s
expectations with a clean
and engaging setting that
emphasizes its cachet as
the place for sophisticated shopping, dining
and entertaining.”
Shoppers are already
enjoying a sampling of
Waterside’s reincarnation.
Much of the new landscaping around the perimeter of the center is
already in place, evident in
the stately royal palms
that now grace the entryways. When completed,
Waterside Shop’s landscape
plan will include more than
30,000 new tropical plants
and flowering shrubs. A
Royal Palm Promenade
at the northwest corner
leads to the new retail
shops on the former site of
Jacobson’s and a burst of
color provided by Helen
Johnson bougainvillea
hugs the U.S. 41/Tamiami
Trail frontage.
“There wasn’t a speck of
color along Tamiami Trail
before,” said landscape
architect John Grissim, who
designed Waterside’s new
look. “This bougainvillea is
four or five feet wide and
runs the continuous length.
It has flowers year round
so the mall will always
have a very dramatic look
from the road.”
Grissim said Waterside’s
landscaping renaissance
will lend a more contemporary ambience with a
550-foot wall, waterfalls,
bridges and flowers and
plant material native
to Florida, the latter a
requirement of Collier
County government.
“The previous landscaping was more than 10
years old and unfortunately
had grown so much that
shoppers couldn’t see the
stores on the opposite side or
feel connected to the activity
taking place around them,”
said Grissim, a partner in
Grissim-Metz-Andriese, a
landscape architect and
engineering firm in Northville,
Michigan. “The old landscaping was more naturalistic and organic; the new
features will be more architectural and more orderly
with a touch of the tropical
look you expect in Naples.
And water, of course, will
be a predominant element
in the shopping experience.
It will always be close by.”

with a strong focus on
community relationships
and partnerships.
What are the
desired results?
• Greater apprehension
rates of offenders
• Increased citizen
satisfaction
• Reduced response times
• Higher visibility within
the community
• Enhanced interactive
relationships with
community leaders,
merchants and citizens
What are the costs
to the community?
The Collier County
Sheriff’s Office is providing
this new urban response
model with assets currently
assigned to the Sheriff ’s
Office. This initiative will be
implemented at no additional cost to taxpayers.

Group walks

Although our regular

you make a reservation for

can work with you to
arrange the date and time
of your walk, we prefer

participants. We can also
tailor your walk to match
your particular interests.
The best months to call
me to make arrangements

September through November. Our regular season
begins December 1. Make
your reservation by calling

Mary’s Monday report
I started out with five
participants and picked up
two shortly thereafter. They
were from Minnesota,
Illinois, Pelican Bay and
Vanderbilt Beach. We saw
mangrove crab and plenty
of spiders. At the bridge
we had quite a day and
picked up several people
just for that area. We saw
three Osprey (two came up
with good size fish), two
Great Egret, two Tri-color
Heron, five White Ibis, one
Snowy Egret, one Little
Blue, and both Black and
Turkey Vulture. The big
find was a Reddish Egret
doing the drunken sailor
dance. Most had brought
field glasses, which was
very helpful.
On the beach we saw
three Dolphin, Brown
Pelican, Immature Herring
Gull Laughing Gull in flight.
There I talked about all of
those birds, plus the Eagle
compared to the Osprey.
There were lots of good
questions. They wanted to
know the problems and
effects of extension of beach
renourishment on Turtle
nesting. I presented the
turtle, dolphin and manatee
talks and discussed the
Sargassum and the Sargasso
Sea, currents of the Gulf,
shells, the topography and
a brief history of the Gulf
and Florida.
Sheri’s Tuesday report
Good walk today. I had 12
participants, with two
others who joined us on

the boardwalk and plan
to come another day to
be a part of the whole
walk. We had a little
blue heron give us quite
a show at the bridge, along
with a huge blue crab
swimming in the water
below. The shelling was
great and everyone seemed to be having fun looking
for the unusual, pretty
colors, etc. One of the
children suggested we have
a “show and shell” which
was a good time for the
shell talk. Had Dr. Bob
along and he was a
huge asset.
Bette’s
Wednesday report
Bette had four interested
participants, all sent from
the Park Shore Resort.
Ruth’s Thursday report
Unfortunately no one
came for Ruth’s walk, but
she did talk to a number of
people and spread theword
about our guided walks.
The Miner’s
Friday report
We had two friends/
walkers who did the whole
trip, one friend who did
most of the trip, and two
additional people who
joined for the whole shell
talk — plus Bob Mohl. We
saw a wonderful little blue
heron showing off his
breeding plumage; his beak
was spectacular! We also
saw a wading bird I could
not identify. After checking
Sibley, I wonder if it might
have been a western willet.

Ed’s Saturday report
Only one person showed
up, but she was very interested so I spent over two
hours with her. I think she
is now likely to join the
Conservancy. So far this
season, we have had 728
participants. That’s a great
total and it is still climbing.
Mary’s following
Monday report
I had 12 people from
Pelican Bay and Michigan.
We went for two hours.
There is still little life on the
beach. At the bridge, we
had a Tri-color that put on
a good show. There also
Ed’s following
Saturday report
We have Tom to thank for
sending all four participants to today’s walk.
Three were from Pelican
Bay, who incidentally had
seen my latest article in the
Pelican Bay Post, and Beth
Menchaca, who is a new
Conservancy staff person
working as an events
coordinator. The highlight
of today’s walk was the
Gopher Tortoise with whom
we had a rendezvous on
the sand road. From his
smile you can tell he was
happy to see us.
were several White Ibis, a
Little Blue and a Great Blue.
The Osprey was old reliable
and a couple of Brown
Pelicans flew over the
beach. We talked about
Turtles nesting and the
Sargasso Sea. We also talked
about dolphin, the beached
whale and the Manatee.
They were a great group
with many questions.
Barbara’s following
Friday report
Ron and I had five walkers
with us this morning. One
couple was from Germany,
one was from England
and there was a gal from
Connecticut. We saw a
couple of raccoons under
the boardwalk, which the
English couple had never
seen before. Also a couple
of green Florida anoles were
spotted. The osprey was
catching fish at the bridge. We
also noticed that the mealy
bug infestation of the black
mangrove is getting worse.
New plants seen
We have a new plant
popping up in the tram
stop area near the Saw
Palmetto. It is Dogfennnel,

Dear Shane,
On behalf of the Board and the membership of the Naples Branch of the International
Wine and Food Society, may I offer our most sincere appreciation for the outstanding
job that you and your staff did at last Monday’s Lobster Boil at the Sandpiper Club on
the beach. I am only sorry that you were not present to hear the accolades and applause
as the members showed their appreciation at the evening’s end.
Penny Isermann and Kay Botko, the event co-chairs, along with our Cellar Master,
Bill Bugera, all mentioned how cooperative you were in making the arrangements,
meeting our special needs and providing flexibility in setting up the event. In addition to
this, it is most apparent by both the quality of the service and the friendliness of the staff,
from tram drivers to waiters/waitresses, that the evening’s success was the result of a
very well coordinated total effort by you and the Foundation staff members.
Thank you again for an extraordinary evening. I hope that we will have an opportunity
to return to the beach at Pelican Bay.
Regards,
Herb Rowe, President, Naples Branch
Eupatorium capillifolium,
“yoo-puh-TOR-ee-um kapill-ih-FOH-lee-um,” a
native. Saltwort, Beachwort, Turtle Weed, Batis
maritime, “BAT-is mar-IT-ima,” is also growing at
Clam Pass. This relatively
low-growing plant is well
below the boardwalk in
some sections.
