It's almost that time of year again - it's time for FUN FAIR!
Sun Valley families and their guests are welcome to join us from 4pm-7pm on Friday, May 29th
for the 2015 FUN FAIR! This is an annual event organized by the Sun Valley Parent Advisory Council.

and a special performance by Al Simmons (August 22 only)!
Oak Hammock Marsh is also offering weeklong camps for children ages 5 to 13 in July and August. Camp
is filled with fun indoor and outdoor themed activities that could include scavenger hunts, canoe adventures, outdoor cooking and nature crafts.

Concours d’art oratoire
Le Concours d’Art Oratoire is a French public-speaking event for students learning French throughout the
province. At this event, students from grades 4-12 are challenged to create, write a text, and recite poems en
Français. They are judged on voice, quality of language, fluency, choice of subject, and gesture.
Congratulations to the following thSun Valley School students who participated in the RETSD Concours d’Art
Oratoire that took place April 14 at College Pierre Elliot Trudeau:
Grade 4 French Communication and Culture (formerly Basic French): Summer H, & Tavis D.
Grade 5 French Communication and Culture (formerly Basic French): Jacinthe L, & Jayme K.
Grade 4 French Immersion: Alexandra H; Taryn P, & Carmen S.
Grade 5 French Immersion: Brooke E, & Kendra G.
Thank you to our wonderful French Communication and Culture teachers, French Immersion teachers, Mme
Leclerc, and Mme Reid for working with the students to promote and celebrate the French language.
Tavis, a Grade 4 student from Rm. 52, earned a Gold Medal at the divisional-level competition held in April.
He was then chosen to represent the River East Transcona School Division in the Communication and Culture
(formerly Basic French) Grade 4 category at the provincial-level competition held on May 2nd at l’Université
de Saint-Boniface.
At the provincial competition, Tavis did an exceptional job speaking with great expression, as well as showing
strong poise and confidence as he recited Claude Roy’s poem, Une histoire à suivre to the panel of judges and
approximately 250 captivated spectators. After all the poems were presented, Tavis ended up placing 3 rd in
his group. Congratulations Tavis for all your hard work! We admire your determination, courage, and commitment to language learning.

CAA’s Bike Safety site is worth looking at, both for drivers and for cyclists. The tabs make it easy to navigate, the images are clear and the information is simple to understand. There is an online quiz and a Road
Test that parents can print out to test their bike-riding child’s road-worthiness.
Whatever our transportation preferences, we all share the road with cyclists. Even though we may feel
that our children know how to ride a bike, for their safety and our peace of mind, they should be aware of
sound cycling practices and the rules of the road.

Winnipeg Parent Newsmagazine has been around since 1993! It remains a current friendly go-to resource
for family life in Winnipeg. The May issue features Summer Day Camp information, as well as tips to help
your child pack for camp so that they will freely enjoy the camp experience. The site contains the full pdf
of their hard copy. Many timely hyper-linked details are found on the Family Fun Calendar; this feature
alone makes it a great site to bookmark, particularly as we hover over the verge of summer festival season!

Did you know that the opposite of bendy is rigid? The grade 1s in Room 8 have been learning about materials and objects in our environment. They have been touring the school sketching and looking at the things in
their environment in new ways.
The Grade 2s in rooms 6 and 11 have been raising mealworms. They have created cozy habitats for their
critters and are exploring what is necessary to help them metamorphose into darkling beetles.
The Grade 4s in rooms 12 and 52 are learning about Manitoba history by searching pictorial websites, such
as http://www.mhs.mb.ca/docs/features/timelinks/imageref/ and seeing our first settlers through the images of the day. We have been talking about taking the time to really see what each image can tell us about
these early first nations peoples and the settlers who came to Manitoba from other lands.

Social Studies
On Friday, April 10th, the Grade 5 students in Room 50 had the opportunity to participate in the Museum
Highlights Tour at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. Students were very enthusiastic to explore the
different exhibits, to learn about Canada’s human rights journeys, to engage in a variety of human rights stories and to view interesting artifacts.

Every year the Manitoba Music Educator Association (MMEA), in
collaboration with the Coalition for Music
Education, celebrates and creates awareness for music
education in our schools on the first Monday of May.
This year, a high school student named Connor Ross
submitted a song entitled “We Are One” to the crossCanada contest and won! Connor’s song captures
Canada’s great multi-cultural heritage, and also expresses how special and important music can be to everyone,
no matter who you are.
Here are some thoughts on this year’s anthem, “We Are One,”
from some of École Sun Valley School’s students:

Pay it Forward at Sun Valley!

Pay it Forward Week was a huge success at Sun Valley. It all started on Monday morning when we watched
a video with our Kindergarten buddies about passing on acts of kindness. We put on special “Pay it Forward”
bracelets to remind us to do kind things for others just like the people on the video! Starting Tuesday, we
brought in “Cans for Kindness” to give to Winnipeg Harvest. On Wednesday, we wore pink clothing (or pink
feathers) to remind us to prevent bullying.
All through the week we read stories, brainstormed ideas about how to be kind, and wrote thank you notes
to people who were kind to us. During the announcements each morning, Sunny Soleils’ kindness tips were
read. Teachers and students were also thanked for their kind deeds.
All around the school, students and teachers were smiling and saying hello, opening doors for each other,
and even bringing in special treats!! Room 12 students along with other students, were looking out for
younger children on the playground, helping clean up their classrooms, and helping their siblings feel better
when they were sad.
Pay it forward week wasn’t about getting “paid back” for doing something kind. It was about making someone else happy! We discovered by changing the way one person feels, you can change the lives of many
people and even change the whole world! We would like to say thank you to the teachers that organized
the activities, and thank all students and adults who are making our school a happy place to be.

Sun Valley Dodgeball Tournament
This month many of the staff and students of Sun Valley have been seen practicing how to dodge, dip, dive,
duck and…well…dodge (dodging is so important that it has to be repeated). That’s right! Dodgeball fever
has hit Sun Valley, and the only cure is to grab a colorful jersey and headband and join in the action.
Tournament play began in early May and features 150 participants organized into 12 teams. Games are
played during both the short recesses, as well as over the noon hour. Each match is 15 minutes in length,
and provides participants with an opportunity to play a fun and strategic game in a safe environment. Who
will win the championship? Will it be the Average Joes? Maybe it will be the Global Gym Purple Cobras?
Or perhaps it will be the Human Targets, or even Patches O’Houlihans’ Heroes. Come down to the gym
during the month of May to find out!
Technology-Enabled Learning Plan (TELP)
You may have read about this project in our divisional newsletter The Torch. The article can be found at
http://www.retsd.mb.ca/Lists/Publications/Budget_15.pdf and features a photo of our very own Mr. Rawdon along with a few of his students. The plan is tied to our divisional priority to make educational technology an integral teaching and learning resource, especially in the area of Mathematics.
In January, every Grade 4 classroom and Grade 7 math classroom in RETSD was equipped with a set of
iPads—one iPad for every five students. A variety of teacher selected math apps and creative tools designed
to help students strengthen their skills.
Students work individually, in pairs, in small groups, or as a class group.
Students are engaged in problem solving as they explore, create, and research with these new learning tools.

Grandparents’ & Special Persons’ Day
This year, Grandparents’ & Special Persons’ Day was April 21st, 2015. The
Grade 2 choir students here at Sun Valley were EXTRA lucky because they
happened to have choir class while their special guests were here!
Students chose the repertoire ( a variety of songs ) and performed a “year in
review” for all of the guests. They even included a song from the Christmas
concert!
