CPR to Vancouver
ABOARD THE CPR TRAIN TO VANCOUVER, JANUARY 1946
CURRENT FROM OCTOBER 29, 2015
meal in the diner and on through Banff.
I saw my first wolf running along on the lake ice, herds
of elk both around the Banff station and all along the
railroad for miles. Oh yes It was not hard to strike up
friends on the train. Quite a few service men and
women going home like I was, plus others going to the
coast to work. One girl in particular was going to the
coast to be an usher at the Orpheum Theatre in
Vancouver. This young lady had been engaged to an
airforce chap that had been killed in action. This airman had written a poem that ended something like
this, “and I touched the face of God, I ask you was it
Flight?” A tremendous poem and well known now but
I'm afraid I cannot recall the correct name for it. This
young lady had the original poem.
I'm on the train and have crawled into my bunk
lulled by the JACK'S and SIX'S of the train wheels
making their noise on the rails. But bear with me in
the hurry to get on with the memoirs I left out men- Some where in my amount of scraps of paper menus
tioning some very important people, for starters the and such I must have a CPR train diner menu with
rest of Orme Payne's family.
the names of some that travelled with me. January
I have told you of meeting once again Orme's Dad, 1946 through the mountains down along the Fraser
Cliff, at the station in Swift Current. Well at last we river and into Vancouver passing along the trade
drove in to the Payne's yard and into their house mark building of Rogers Sugar refinery and slowly

home to a fire) to be welcomed by Orme's Mum,
Beatrice, and of course the rest of the family, Gerry
1, Patsy [now called Pat] 15 going on 18, and Judy
6. Orme was now indeed home and the welcome was
warm to us both. I think I will tell this story on Orme
to justify the going on 18 about Pat. About the second day home Pat put on her lipstick and was going
to go up town. Orme did not realize that sisters grow
up. Orme said to his Mum on seeing Pat with lipstick in place "You're not going to let that girl go up
town with a face made up like that? Beatrice I think
replied that sisters do change when you have been
away for so long. Pat was out the door as Orme's
return to family life educated.
Another couple was Orme's uncle and aunt, Bud
and Mamie Murphy, and their family as I remember
it were Donna and Terry, Guy and Lorna and Penny,
and forgive me if I have left any out. I owe Mamie
Murphy a great thank you as she was a neighbor to
my folks when Dad, George and I were in the service.
Mamie's stories, laughter and support was a
tremendous boost for my Mum, a dear friend now
long gone. But the Mamie Murphy stories will live
forever as long as her family gather to tell them. Bud
Murphy was equally glad to see Orme. Bud was a
laidback fellow.
Orme and I were telling him a few stories and in the
room were two other chaps a Bill Butcher [ex calf
roping champion] and a Dave Wiebe. As Orme and I
held the floor, Bill Butcher, a true storyteller, was
not able to get a word in. Soon we could hear Bill
telling Dave a long story that went like this, "You
know Dave they wanted to pay me only fifty dollars
a ton but I held out until they had to pay me one
hundred and twenty five dollars a ton.” By this time
Bill held us all in suspense when the price per ton
was so high. We did not have to wait much longer for
the end of the story. The straight man Dave finally
said, “Bill what were you doing for this great sum?”
Bill replied, “Putting up hay on the Turkey Track
ranch with a butcher knife.” At that Orme and I had
been bested by a pro so putting on our greatcoats we
left the stage to the professionals.
Others in this small town that helped shape my
formative years were many and I could not begin to
name or thank them all. Harry and Mary McNairn, a
great pair, with Eunice and Buck as family. It was
Harry that changed my name from being called
Gordon to Gordie.
I have been all ready to to walk down the train steps
and HOME for at least twenty minutes. Excited
probably, apprehensive maybe, just glad I survived
and ready to get off the train and meet Mum and
Dad. What a wonderful feeling came over me at this
point, and it still brings a goose bump or two thinking about it. That was a long time ago.

Fear of Gators
While out Sports Fishing off the Florida coast, a
tourist capsized his boat. He could swim, but his
fear of alligators kept him clinging to the overturned
craft.
Spotting an old beachcomber standing on the shore,
the tourist shouted: "Are there any gators around
here!?"
"Naw," the man hollered back, "They ain't been
ONLINE AUCTIONS
around for years!"
Feeling safe, the tourist started swimming leisurely
toward the shore. About halfway there he asked the
guy, "How'd you get rid of the gators?"
"We didn't do nothin,'" the beachcomber replied.
"Wow," said the tourist.
The beachcomber added, "The Sharks got 'em."

SUITE IS REJUVENATED (Caledon East) — The chesterfield suite
in the United Church parsonage has been rebuilt and recovered
with attractive wine-coloured material. The cost amounting to
$115 was met by the Women's Association. Both the pastor and
his wife, Rev. W. M. B. Metcalfe and Mrs. Metcalfe, are delighted
with the improved appearance and utility of the suite.
been telling of seeing a lynx while driving near Claireville.
REFRIGERATOR IS STOLEN (Woodbridge) — A small Moffatt
electric refrigerator was carried away by thieves ransacking
country home "Twin Towers," the beautiful country home on
8th Ave. N. of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stone, 66 Russell Hill Rd.,
Toronto. Entrance was made through a rear basement door late
Saturday evening or early Sunday morning. There are marks
to indicate that the thieves may have terminated their stay in
the unoccupied building suddenly when suffering a severe
shock while disconnecting cables during attempted removal of
a heavy electric stove. Almost all pieces of a rare china set of
distinctive French design are reported missing. This is the third
time in three years that the home has been robbed. On the first
occasion, all electric fixtures were removed. A new gate house
now is in course of construction at the entrance to the property, so that permanent occupants may discourage prowlers from
approaching the main residence. The latter is occupied infrequently at this time of year. Based on a fascination by French
architecture during continental tours. "Twin Towers" was
designed personally by Mrs. Stone. The building was completed
in 1940.
STREET LIGHTS FAIL (Tottenham) — All streets here were
plunged into darkness at the peak of open-night shopping activity
on Wednesday evening of last week. The street lighting system
failed shortly after eight o'clock and remained out of order for the
rest of the evening. This service lapse, an infrequent occurrence
here in recent years, precipitated some main corner reminiscences
of the rather numerous black-outs during 1917 when the World
War 1 coal shortages idled steam driven dynamos in the preHydro electric light plant on Mill St. W. Turning off of display window lights in stores late Wednesday evening sharply accentuated
the gloomy appearance of the business section.
OIL STOVE IN SCHOOL (Colgan) — The reparation school at Colgan
is one of the first buildings of this kind in the district to install
one of the modern oil-burning stoves. A large and attractive unit,
a Coleman product, was placed in the school last Thursday. For a
day before installation it had been on display in the hardware

LUNCH ROOM IS REPAINTED (Schomberg) — The main street
here has been brightened by redecoration of the front of the lunch
room recently opened by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Shushelnisky.
WEIRD, WACKY, BIZARRE! (Tottenham) — The weird, the
wacky, and the bizarre couple with the heights of brilliance in
ingenuity marked costumes creating a fine Halloween spirit at
a student party in the senior room of the continuation school
on Wednesday evening of the last week. Official chaperons and
participants in the fun were the principal and assistant-principal. R. A. Graham and Josephine Beyon. With an outfit which

early '20's. Margaret Donnan, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Donnan won the first in the feminine costume competition Bart Keogh, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Keogh, captured
the boys' award with a merchant marian outfit worn in grimmer days by his older brother, Joe Keogh. Contrasting joltingly with the trim royal blue was his shaggy and profuse sidewhisker arrangement which would have excited the envy of
any salt tar. Ruth Tipping provided martial piano accompaniment for the costume parade. The lunch committee comprised
Helen Delaney, Florence O'Leary and Betty Waddling.
ALL NOW IN KLEINBURG (Kleinburg) — V. A. VanAllen of
Toronto, who recently took over the grocery and meat business of
E. J. Snider here, was joined last week by his family. Mrs. VanAllen
and their daughters, Gloria, Marilyn and June, moved from ONLY ONE DANCE MISHAP (Woodbridge) — Only one mishap

Unintended Politeness
"Grandpa, I'm really proud of you," said the prim and proper young lady to her codgery old
grandfather. "What's to be proud of?" asked the old man. His granddaughter replied, "I noticed
that when you sneeze, you've learned to put your hand in front of your mouth."
"Of course," explained Grandpa. "How else am I going to catch my teeth?"

Whatever Happened to . . .
JACKFISH?
Jackfish began in the 1870's as a small Scandinavian fishing
village. With the Canadian Pacific Railway's tracks being laid
across Canada it was necessary to refuel the train's water and
coal supplies. During the 1880's the CPR chose Jackfish as one
of their coal stops.
A 600 foot long dock was constructed in 1895 to allow the supply ships from Pennsylvania to unload coal. Two cranes at the
dock would take up to three days to unload the ship's supply of
coal, some of which weighed up to 10,000 tons. A water tower
near the tracks supplied water to be used as steam power. Up
to 300 men would work at the coal dock facilities during peak
periods.
With the trains now stopping at Jackfish, the Scandinavian
fishermen were now able to export their catches to markets in
Toronto and Montreal. After the day's catches were pulled in,
the fishermen would hang up their large nets along the shore to
dry.
In order to accomodate the growing population, Jackfish built a
church, cabins, school and boarding houses.
The three storey Lakeview Hotel was constructed during the
1890's by Bill Fraser and would become the town's primary
source of social events with it's popular dances and dinners.
Business boomed even further when thirsty ship crews docked
and found themselves craving alcohol.
The Lakeview often saw drunken brawls. During one of the
hotel's fights, a chair was thrown across the room, missing its
intended target and knocking out another man's eye.
By 1916 the Ontario Temperance Act had come into effect and
Jackfish became a "dry" town with the prohibition of alcohol.
The act was eventually repealed in 1921. After the act was no
longer in effect, Lakeview was purchased by the Spadoni
Brothers in 1930. The brothers sought to improve the hotel's
business by selling a bottle of beer for 25 cents and by extended the bar to allow up to 100 patrons. They also added water,
electricity and toilets.
From 1932 until 1938 young Japanese men (Nisei) were sent to
road construction camps to work on the Trans Canada
Highway. These camps allowed men to work during The Great
Depression, when employment was difficult to obtain. One of
the camps was located in Jackfish where men initially worked
only for room and board but eventually earned from .30 cents
to $5.00 per hour. These men would work for a few months and
then move on to other work placements in Ontario.
Jackfish's demise began with the introduction of the diesel locomotive as well as the construction of the Trans Canada
Highway. With trains no longer requiring Jackfish's coal supply
and a road which bypassed the town, the population began to
decline.
The fishermen suffered hardship when sea lamprey were introduced into the Great Lakes. These fish contributed to the
decline of fish population.
Then during the midnight hours of 1960, the Lakeview Hotel (managed
by Mr. and Mrs. Percy McCluskey) burned to the ground.
By 1963 Jackfish was a ghost town.
(Jackfish is a ghost town in northern Ontario, Canada, located
on the north shore of Lake Superior east of Terrace Bay.)
