Dog Showing Rules to Live By

Win with humility and lose with dignity.

Congratulate the winners and share the pleasure of others.

Choose the best stud dog for your bitch, not the cheapest or most
convenient.

Be patient when selecting stock; remember the ugly duckling often
becomes the beautiful swan.

Remember the dog you love is the same dog whether it wins “Best in
Show” or last in class.

Appreciate the quality of other people’s dogs and recognize the faults
in your own; it will make you a better breeder/owner/handler.

Remember, every action has its consequence. When you enter a show
the judge’s opinion is the consequence. If you don't like it don’t enter
next time.

Your dog loves you unconditionally. Try and live up to his or her
opinion of you.

Remember, this is your last chance to live today so what you do and
say today can never be changed. The only person who has control of
what you do and say is you.
When you have a great win, it’s a special time; savor and enjoy the
memory of it forever, it is your win & no one can take that feeling away
from you.

Essential Characteristics of Good Breed Judges

If a judge is an expert and success in the dog show game, his many qualities include the following:
Desire A good judge likes dogs and has a strong desire to know more about dogs. He is willing to spend time and
energy merely for the sake of working with and learning about dog breeds. His library is full of better canine books.
He studies the anatomy and movement of dogs, the reasons for dog´s existence, the dog´s behavior patterns, the
dog´s defects and virtues. Learning that a white toenail is a disqualification in a given breed is rote memory; learning
that a white toenail indicates that the dog is carrying an undesirable white gene is a thrilling experience.
Mental Image of the Ideal Breed Type A good judge must have a mental picture of the ideal dog or bitch of a
given breed. Judging is the art of comparing differences; that is, comparing the differences between the dog being
looked at and the mental picture of the ideal, and also comparing the differences between the dogs being exhibited.
If a bitch is being observed, she is compared with the ideal. If two bitches are being shown, each is compared with
the ideal and also compared with each other.
Factual Observations The power to accurately observe important differences between an ideal and the exhibited
dog is the basis for a correct decision. The speed with which the correct observations are made indicates the judge´s
degree of experience and insight. Speed comes with constant correct practice over a period of time.
Conclusions (Judgments) After marking factual observations and comparisons, the judge must have the ability to
evaluate the dog as a whole, not as separate parts, and must correctly select the best. The judge´s enthusiasm for
the perfection of a given point should not interfere with his judgment of the whole.
A score card system (giving a score for each part observed) helps evaluate parts, but it is of little help in judging the
whole. Is the perfect head too big for the perfect body? Are the perfectly shaped ears too big for the perfect body?
Judging is not the arithmetical sum of a given number of figures; it is an art requiring judgment.
Courage of Conviction and Honesty A judge must independently arrive at his own honest conclusion and have
the courage to stand by his convictions. When there are large entries of good dogs and decisions are close, the judge
must do what he knows is right irrespective of previous show results or what spectators think. Seeing the quality of a
dog through someone else´s eyes soon ruins a judge´s standing. Nothing deteriorates more rapidly than the
reputation of a judge whom exhibitors believe has an outside influence affecting his judgment.
Ability to Effectively Give Reasons A judge that can correctly and accurately give his reasons for his selections
enhances his own standing. Most people evaluate others by the reasoning ability and logic they display. Ability to
talk convincingly and persuasively is very desirable in a judge, provided it is sincere. Most people readily see through
sham.

"The Naughty Dogs" or "The Dirty Dogs" or "The Dirty Dogs of Paris."

of Ventura Dog Shows by Storm!

Club members Sandy Fox and Irina Bogard cleaned up at the Ventura, CA dog shows in early July!
These were big entries with 5 point majors every day. Sandy won 3 days in a row including Best
of Opposite Sex on day 1 with Hattie. On Day 2, Sandy won Winners Bitch with Ella and Best of Op
with Hattie again. Sandy rounded out the weekend on Day 3 out with Select (new AKC class) with
Hattie. Wow! Hattie cleaned up! Congratulations to Hattie & Sandy on a big-win weekend in
Ventura!
Also at Ventura on Day 2, Irina took Winners Dog and Best of Winners with Zorro. Then, on Day 3
Zorro won Winners Dog and Best of Winners and finished his championship! She also won Winners
Bitch with Emme. It was an amazing day! Congratulations to Emme & Irina on their big wins and
HUGE congrats to Zorro on his new championship!!
I was lucky enough to witness these impressive wins & it was a fantastic weekend for the FBCAZ.
Let’s all congratulate these girls & their pups for their hard work and dedication for a job well
done. I do believe the California competition stood up and took notice of what we are up to over
here in Arizona where we have some beautiful Frenchies that are competitive ANYWHERE!

Dogs are People too!

If you’re not a dog lover, then more than likely you are a little overwhelmed when you visit the home of someone
who considers their dog a family member. I encounter this regularly. It’s almost funny to watch how other people
react to how we treat our dog. Julia Williams has written a great post about being a Crazy Cat Lady, so I figured this
would be a look at things from the doggie side of the fence.
Our dog truly thinks she is a person most of the time. When I chat on the phone with people and mention needing
to run the vacuum again because Bear is shedding, I hear comments like “Dogs belong outside. How can you stand
having all that hair everywhere?” or “Put her out until she stops shedding.” These people don’t understand that
she’s never lived outside and she would be miserable if she wasn’t in the house with her people.
When I cook, she stands guard to make sure that no crumbs or tasty bits of our dinner hit the kitchen floor and yes,
sometimes I drop a morsel here and there for her. Once the food is ready and we are all eating, she usually
positions herself as close as she can get to me, often drooling on my leg while she waits for me to finish. She knows
that I will save her the last bite and give her the plate to lick clean. Some people have serious issues with that too.
It’s not something I even think about.
Our dog lives in the house with us, she sleeps in the bed with us when she wants to, she climbs into my lap when I
watch TV – and yes, she eats off of people dishes. For some people this is just absolutely too much. When people
are here to visit, I usually sequester her in the bedroom because she expects that everyone will let her lean her
head on their leg while they eat. She also thinks that everyone should be swayed by those golden brown eyes and
will pet her lovingly while slipping her CANIDAE TidNips™ treats for offering her paw over and over again.
Our dog is “a people” too as far as we are concerned. We talk to her, we play with her and we are used to her being
close by at all times. I have a constant shadow wherever I go through the day. She curls up at my feet or on the
other side of the sofa while I work, she follows me into the bathroom and when I take a bath she lays down beside
the tub. If I’m doing laundry, I have a canine escort to the washer and dryer. If she happens to be napping and I
leave the room, when she wakes up she will bark once kind of like asking “Hey, where are you momma?” When I
answer her, she comes to my side wherever I am.
That’s right, I’m the Momma and my boyfriend is Daddy; our dog is not a pet, she’s another kid. We blame each
other for spoiling her and giving in to her every whim. But to tell the truth we’re both guilty and the teenagers are
just as bad about treating her like a person. They wake up in the mornings and call the dog so they get their “good
morning” from her before anyone else sees them. They let her watch TV in their rooms and nap at their feet.
She is part of our family. She is loyal and trustworthy, she’s good company and she is a protective presence who
defends our home against unwanted or unknown visitors. No one steps in our yard without her sounding the alarm,
and no one comes through the door without one of us escorting them and telling her it’s okay.
In our family the dog is a lot more than a pet. She is a family member and she’ll never be shoved out the door
because her shedding is a hassle; she won’t be shooed away because she wants a taste of our dinner. We’ll never
callously be able to say, it’s just a dog. Because “it” is she, and she is Bear, and Bear is family.

VACCINATION
27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats.
Dr. W. Jean Dodd, founder of HEMOPET, vaccination protocol is now being adopted by ALL 27 North American
veterinary schools. Veterinary schools are now going to be teaching over-vaccination of pets (once a year
"boosters") is not only not necessary, but in some cases can be harmful or deadly!
Some of this information will present an ethical & economic challenge to vets, and there will be skeptics. Some
organizations have come up with a political compromise suggesting vaccinations every 3 years to appease those who
fear loss of income vs. those concerned about potential side effects. Politics, traditions, or a doctor's economic well
being should not be a factor in a medical decision.
If you're concerned with immune levels, have your vet run a Titer test. THEN and only then, if the levels are below
acceptable, should you have a booster. After all, when is the last time you had a "booster" for smallpox, or
whooping cough, or anything else you had shots for as a child? Immune systems work the same in all mammals,
and the concept that pets have to have yearly shots doesn't make any more sense than if you had have shots every
year. If mammal’s immune systems were that weak in fending off these things, all of them, us included, would have
been extinct years ago!
There are two types of vaccines currently available to veterinarians: modified-live vaccines and inactivated ("killed")
vaccines.
Modified Live Vaccines (MLV)
Modified-live vaccines contain a weakened strain of the disease causing agent. Weakening of the agent is typically
accomplished by chemical means or by genetic engineering. These vaccines replicate within the host, thus increasing
the amount of material available for provoking an immune response without inducing clinical illness. This provocation
primes the immune system to mount a vigorous response if the disease causing agent is ever introduced to the
animal. Further, the immunity provided by a modified-live vaccine develops rather swiftly and since they mimic
infection with the actual disease agent, it provides the best immune response.
Inactivated Vaccines (Killed)
Inactivated vaccines contain killed disease causing agents. Since the agent is killed, it is much more stable and has a
longer shelf life, there is no possibility that they will revert to a virulent form, and they never spread from the
vaccinated host to other animals. They are also safe for use in pregnant animals (a developing fetus may be
susceptible to damage by some of the disease agents, even though attenuated, present in modified-live vaccines).
Although more than a single dose of vaccine is always required and the duration of immunity is generally shorter,
inactivated vaccines are regaining importance in this age of Retrovirus and Herpes virus infections and concern about
the safety of genetically modified microorganisms. Inactivated vaccines available for use in dogs include Rabies,
Canine Parvovirus, and Canine Coronavirus.
NEW PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNOLOGY
Dogs immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a Modified Live Virus (MLV) vaccine is given after 6 months of
age, it produces an immunity which is good for the life of the pet (i.e. Canine Distemper, Parvo). If another MLV
vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine and
there is little or no effect. The titer is not "boosted" nor are more memory cells induced. "Not only are annual
boosters for Parvo and Distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and
immune-mediated Hemolytic Anemia. "There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual
administration of MLV vaccines."
Puppies receive antibodies through their mother's milk. This natural protection can last 8-14 weeks. Puppies should
NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks. Maternal immunity will neutralize the vaccine and little protection (0-38%)
will be produced. Vaccination at 6 weeks will, however, delay the timing of the first highly effective vaccine.
Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart suppress rather than stimulate the immune system. A series of vaccinations is
given starting at 8 -9 weeks and 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age. Another vaccination given sometime after
6 months of age (usually at 1 year 4 months) will provide lifetime immunity.

CURRENT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DOGS
Distemper & Parvo: According to Dr. Schultz, AVMA, 8-15-95, when a vaccinations series given at 2, 3 & 4 months
and again at 1 year with MLV, puppies memory cells that survive for life, providing lifelong immunity. Dr. Carmichael
at Cornell and Dr. Schultz has studies showing immunity against challenge at 2-10 years for Canine Distemper & 4
years for Parvovirus. Studies for longer duration are pending. There are no new strains of Parvovirus as one
manufacturer would like to suggest. Parvovirus vaccination provides cross immunity for all types." Hepatitis
(Adenovirus) is one of the agents known to be a cause of Kennel Cough. Only vaccines with CAV-2 should be used
as CAV-1 vaccines carry the risk of hepatitis blue-eye reactions & kidney damage.
Bordetella Parainfluenza: Commonly called "kennel cough", recommended only for those dogs boarded,
groomed, taken to dog shows, or for any reason housed where exposed to a lot of dogs. The intranasal vaccine
provides more complete and more rapid onset of immunity with less chance of reaction. Immunity requires 72 hours
and does not protect from every cause of Kennel Cough. Immunity is of short duration (4 to 6 months).
Rabies: There still is an ongoing study regarding the Rabies vaccine. Most states now allow (reluctantly) 3 year
Rabies, but the study is collecting data on whether or not even that may be too much. They are looking at 8 or 10
year for Rabies!
Lyme disease: Lyme disease is a tick born disease which can cause lameness, kidney failure and heart disease in
dogs. Ticks can also transmit the disease to humans. The original Ft. Dodge killed bacteria has proven to be the
most effective vaccine. Lyme disease prevention should emphasize early removal of ticks. Amitraz collars are more
effective than Top Spot, as Amitraz paralyzes the tick's mouthparts preventing transmission of disease.
-----------------------------------------------VACCINATIONS NOT RECOMMENDED
Multiple components in vaccines compete with each other for the immune system and result in lesser immunity for
each individual disease as well as increasing the risk of a reaction. Canine Corona Virus is only a disease of puppies.
It is rare, self limiting (dogs get well in 3 days without treatment). Cornell & Texas A&M have only diagnosed one
case each in the last 7 years. Corona virus does not cause disease in adult dogs.
Leptospirosis vaccine is a common cause of adverse reactions in dogs. Most of the clinical cases of Lepto reported in
dogs in the US are caused by Serovaars (or types) Grippotyphosa and Bratsilvia. The vaccines contain different
Serovaars Eanicola and Ictohemorrhagica. Cross protection is not provided and protection is short lived. Lepto
vaccine is immunosuppressive to puppies less than 16 weeks.
----------------------------------------------------NEW DEVELOPMENTS
Giardia: The most common intestinal parasite of humans in North America, 30% or more of all dogs & cats are
infected with Giardia. It has now been demonstrated that humans can transmit Giardia to dogs & cats and vice
versa.
VACCINES BADLY NEEDED
Ehrlichia [one of the other tick diseases, much worse than Lyme] for dogs.
CONCLUSION
Most vets recommend annual boosters and most kennel operators require them. For years, the pricing structure of
vets has misled clients into thinking that the inherent value of an annual office visit was in the "shots". They failed to
emphasize the importance of a physical exam for early detection of treatable diseases. Dogs no longer need to be
vaccinated against Distemper, Parvo every year. Once the initial series of puppy vaccinations and first annual
vaccinations are completed, immunity from MLV vaccines persists for life.
Imagine the money you will save, not to mention fewer risks from side risk of mediated Hemolytic Anemia and
allergic reactions are reduced by less frequent use of vaccines as well as by avoiding unnecessary vaccines such as
K-9 Corona virus, as well as ineffective vaccines such as Leptospirosis. The AAHA and all 27 veterinary schools of
North America are our biggest endorsement for these new protocols.

supplies throughout North America, consults in clinical pathology, and lectures worldwide. She has written excellent
articles that everyone, especially our veterinarians, should read.

Note: The following vaccine protocol is offered for those dogs where minimal vaccinations are advisable or
desirable. The schedule recommended by W. Jean Dodds, DVM should not be interpreted to mean that other
protocols recommended by a veterinarian would be less satisfactory. It's a matter of professional judgment and
choice.
Perform vaccine antibody titers for Distemper and Parvovirus every three years thereafter, or more often, if desired.
Vaccinate for Rabies virus according to the law, except where circumstances indicate that a written waiver needs to
be obtained from the primary care veterinarian. In that case, a Rabies antibody titer can also be performed to

CODE OF ETHICS
This Code is established in accordance with the objectives of the French Bulldog Club of Arizona as set
forth in Article I, Section 2 of the Club Constitution. It is presented as a guideline for the use of FBCAZ
Members when buying, breeding, selling and exhibiting French Bulldogs. Violators of the FBCAZ Code of
Ethics will be subject to prompt action under FBCAZ grievance and charge procedures.
 As a member of the French Bulldog Club of Arizona, I will abide by the Constitution and By-Laws
of the French Bulldog Club of Arizona and the rules of the American Kennel Club.
 As a member of the French Bulldog Club of Arizona, I will keep accurate breeding record,
registration papers and pedigrees.
 As a member of the French Bulldog Club of Arizona, I will furnish accurate records to each buyer
of all shots and worming, pedigree and AKC registration or transfer documents, unless written
agreement is made at the time of the sale that papers will be withheld.
 As a member of the French Bulldog Club of Arizona, I will have all services and sales agreements,
which are mutually agreed upon, stated in writing and signed by all parties involved.
 As a member of the French Bulldog Club of Arizona, I will maintain the best possible standards of
canine heath, cleanliness and care.
 As a member of the French Bulldog Club of Arizona, I will conduct all advertising in an honest
manner that will not, in any way, misrepresent, defraud or mislead.

breeding that are in good health and free from communicable diseases and disqualifying faults.
 As a member of the French Bulldog Club of Arizona, I agree that I will not breed and stud dog to
any bitch whose owner is directly involved with any puppy broker, puppy mill, litter lot sales or
any other commercial enterprise whose business is involved in this like-type activities.
 As a member of the French Bulldog Club of Arizona, I will breed a bitch only with the intent that
this particular breeding will improve the breed.
 As a member of the French Bulldog Club of Arizona, I will not sell a French Bulldog to any
commercial facility, puppy brokers, pet shop, puppy mill or agent thereof.
 As a member of the French Bulldog Club of Arizona, I will conduct myself at all times in such a
way as to reflect credit on the sport of purebred dog showing in general and French Bulldogs in
particular.

The purpose: This is a club of French Bulldog Fanciers who shared a common interest and
are committed to protecting this rare breed. We advocate for the registered, purebred French
bulldogs as a family companion, advance canine health and well-being, and work to protect
