Hanover Township Tax Duplicate for 1829
When the Ashland Co Chapter OGS
published our first volumes of the township research aid series, we did not include tax lists. Here, therefore, is one
such tax list, for Hanover Township,
now Ashland County, 1829. The real
estate tax does not necessarily prove
residence; the chattel (personal property) tax does. A tax is on the previous
year, so this 1829 tax list might prove
residence in the year 1828. The tax
amounts, divided into state tax, road
tax, county tax, court house tax, and
school tax, are omitted here.

The Mowery Brothers—Ashland Funeral Director and Photographer
Willard L. Mowery, director of the
Mowery Funeral Home, and his
brother, H. A. Mowery, Ashland photographer, are mentioned in many of the
records we save as genealogists. Thanks
to Anne Budd for providing these obituaries from the Ashland Times-Gazette.
The photographs in the paper are too
poor to reproduce here.
Willard Mowery
Ashland Times-Gazette, 27 Aug 1953.
W. Mowery Dies Here Wednesday
[photo].
W. L. Mowery, a funeral director for nearly 60 years, who resided at
435 Sandusky St., died at Samaritan
hospital at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday at the
age of 84. He had been in failing health
for several months.
Born in Wayne county Jan. 15,
1869, he was the son of Michael and
Mary Steward Mowery, and resided in
Ashland county nearly all of his life.
Although he was forced to retire after
many years of active service in his profession, he still retained his funeral director’s license, and was believed to be
the oldest holder of such a license in the
state of Ohio.
[ILLEGIBLE] his first funeral.
The funeral home was then located in
the Opera House building.
He later moved to the old
Mowery homestead on Sandusky St
building the present home where he
resided. With the aid of his farm hand,
he cut down the native logs of oak, cypress, red beech and maple. He assisted
the carpenter and did much of the building and finishing himself. The house
was begun in 1899 and finished in 1900.
After moving to town Mr.
Mowery set up his business in the old
telephone building, where he stayed for
25 years, moving at that time to 52 W
Third St., across from the Presbyterian
church, where he remained until his
retirement.
He was preceded in death by
his first wife, Carrie Reed Mowery
[relative of your editor]. His second
wife, Lydia, survives him; also one
brother, H. A. Mowery, and two sisters,
Mrs. Cora Balch and Mrs. Jessie Mansfield, all of Ashland.
He was a member of Trinity
Lutheran church, where services will be
held Saturday at 2 p.m., conducted by the
Rev. Nathan F. Harter. Burial will be
made in Ashland cemetery.
The family will receive friends
at the Denbow and Bear funeral home
Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. The body will lie
in state at the church for one hour preceding the services.
Harvey A. Mowery
Ashland Times-Gazette, 12 Jun 1956.
H. A. Mowery, 92, Well-Known Photographer, Dies Following Illness.
H. A. Mowery, 92, well known
city photographer, died at 4:40 p.m. Sunday at Samaritan Hospital following a
lingering illness.
For more than three generations,
Mr. Mowery was known as Ashland’s
leading photographer. When he retired
from his studio at 58 Main St in 1948 he
had the distinction of having been in business longer than any other businessman in
the city.
In 1889 he purchased a part interest in the Shoemaker and Stevens pho-
tographic business and in 1901 he became sole owner. His artistry with the
camera brought him honors and acclaim.
For 60 years he served as Commercial
photographer for Myers. He also played
the violin in the Ashland Orchestra for a
time and became adept at trap shooting
and archery.
He was the son of Michael and
Mary Steward Mowery. Mowery was
born in Fostoria, Oct. 13, 1864. He had
been a resident of Ashland the last 70
years.
Mr. Mowery was married Dec.
30, 1891 to Eva Ferrell, who survives
him. Other survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. Marguerite Neal of Ashland; a
granddaughter, Mrs. Robert Cranston of
San Antonio, Tex.; two greatgrandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Cora
Balch and Mrs. Jessie Mansfield both of
Ashland. A son Donald and a brother
preceded him in death.
He was a member of the Trinity
Lutheran Church and of the IOOF Lodge
No. 83 for 65 years.
Funeral services will be held
Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Gilbert
Funeral Home with the Dr. Robert
Kinsey officiating.
The family will receive friends
from 7 to 9 p.m. The IOOF services will
be held at the funeral home at 8:30 p.m.
Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.
