Welcome To The Heart Of Our Collections
welcome to the heart of our collections
These collections bear the exceptional imprint of one of the rare authentic
“Manufactures”, meaning a watch company that develops and produces
its movements in-house. Welcome to the land of Zenith. A land where
daring reigns supreme, where pleasure blossoms by making dreams come
true, where authenticity flows naturally from a rich history stretching over
almost 150 years. A Manufacture still located in the very spot where it was
born, and which currently accommodates no less than 80 watchmaking
professions. An incubator for some of the most virtuoso talents of their
generation who perpetuate the work begun by Georges Favre-Jacot in 1865,
mastering each and every gesture in a free-spirited approach to creating
mechanical feats blending noble traditions with the avant-garde. From
20 th century marine chronometers to the flight instruments that accompanied
the early days of aviation, along with the first ever integrated automatic
chronograph, all Zenith creations reflect this unremitting determination to
explore uncharted territory.
While I currently enjoy the honour of serving as guardian of this horological
temple, my role is first and foremost that of a go-between… Someone who
jealously safeguards yesterday’s legacy so as to nurture tomorrow. It is with this
in mind that we have undertaken a sweeping renovation of our manufacturing
premises that will be completed by our 150 th anniversary in 2015. While the
most sophisticated technologies are implemented in this process, we have
chosen to preserve the historical architecture of the site, since it is within
these red and white brick walls that some of the finest pages in the Zenith
legend have been written – and will be for many decades to come. Through
these pages, I invite you on a journey to the heart of this legend and wish
you a wonderful discovery!

T r a n sce n di n g t h e v isio n a r y spi r it
It all began with a man, Georges Favre-Jacot, together with a dream,
a destiny. That of creating the first industrial Manufacture in history,
capable of making the most reliable and accurate watches ever imagined
– and of thereby changing the face of 19 th century watchmaking. Thus
transformed from chrysalis to full-fledged butterfly, it has remained
so ever since, buoyed up by the men and women who perpetuate the
visionary spirit of Georges Favre-Jacot. Artisans with golden hands,
authentic witnesses to creative daring who follow their own star in
daily fulfilling the destiny of one of the most innovative manufacturers
for almost 150 years.

Combining authenticity, daring and pleasure: such is the complex equation
guiding the endeavours of the Manufacture Zenith. Over 600 movement variations compose its rich heritage and testify to the impressive wealth
of expertise acquired to date. From onboard instruments to wristwatches,
along with pocket-watches, over 300 patents represent as many milestones
in the progress of time measurement. Zenith notably launched in 1948 its
famous Calibre 135, a chronometer movement featuring a small seconds
display and measuring just 29.3 mm in diameter, that was to be rewarded
by no less than 235 chronometry prizes. In 1960, another legend was born:
Calibre 5011 K. Setting new precision records in its category, it would equip
marine chronometers, pocket chronometers and clocks, as well as the famous
Pilot Montre d’Aéronef Type 20.
E l P r i m e r o – FORE V ER THE FIRST
It was in 1969 that Zenith went down in history by launching the calibre named
El Primero – meaning ‘the first’ in Esperanto – that marked a watershed
in contemporary watchmaking history. It was the first ever automatic integrated chronograph movement. Designed as an inseparable whole, it had no
additional module but instead featured a construction built around a column
wheel and a central rotor mounted on ball bearings. Better still, it beat at the
high frequency of 10 vibrations per second, making it the world’s most accurate series-produced chronograph to this very day. To make things even more
complicated, it had an over 50-hour power reserve – and since impossible is an
unknown concept for Zenith, it was also equipped with a date and measured
a few figures
just 6.5 mm thick and 29.33 mm in diameter. The combination of these various

A RENAISSANCE AMI D THE Q UART Z CRISIS
Even though he is reluctant to admit it, Charles Vermot’s courageous act did
indeed spark Zenith’s renewal in 1984 with the revival of the El Primero calibre.
After a temporary eclipse, the magic of fine mechanical movements appealed
once more. In 1994, the Manufacture launched another movement that would
find its place in the history books: the automatic ultra-thin Elite calibre.
In 1999, Zenith joined the LVMH luxury group, and distinguished itself in
2003 by a new innovation that quickly asserted itself as one of its signatures:
the Open concept. A dial aperture afforded fascinating views of the escapement of the El Primero calibre, revealing the enchantment of a mechanism
oscillating at the exceptional speed of 36,000 vibrations per hour.

In 2009, the El Primero calibre celebrated its 40 th anniversary and a complete collection now bears its name. Since its birth, it has constantly evolved
in step with countless original complications and mechanisms. The year
2009 witnessed another event, when the town of Le Locle was classed as a
UNESCO world heritage site for its industrial architecture and urban planning,
to which Zenith contributed by building the first ever industrial Manufacture in
1865. Loyal to its origins and its values, the brand has never left its birthplace.
The El Primero Striking 10 th was introduced in 2010, representing a unique
evolution of the jumping seconds principle. High frequency became visible, as the chronograph sweep seconds hand completes a dial rotation in
10 seconds, marking off each of its jumps on the 100 divisions engraved on the
dial. The mechanical feats continued and in due course Zenith was awarded
the Best Complicated Watch Prize at the 2011 Geneva Watchmaking Grand
Prix (GPHG) for its Academy Christophe Colomb Equation of Time. The following year came the turn of the Pilot Big Date Special to distinguish itself at
the GPHG. Meanwhile, the major renovation work on the Manufacture moves
ahead, as Zenith tirelessly continues forging its destiny.

THE ART OF D ETAIL
E XCELLENCE GENER ATES EMOTIONS
At Zenith, each detail stems from technical, functional and aesthetic research that reflects the meticulous finishing of the timepieces born
in the Manufacture. The work of experienced artisans representing no
less than 80 professions, this extremely detailed attention dedicated
to the movement as well as to the dial and case are all signature features of a Zenith watch. This has been true since 1865 and doubtless
explains while the brand’s star has continued to shine so brightly in
the Fine Watchmaking firmament. Because the enduring strength of a
Manufacture is inseparably entwined with the excellence it dedicates
to developing and producing timepieces that are the stuff of dreams, the
precise execution and the care lavished on each detail will determine
the emotional force exuded by the watch. It is this quest for perfection
that has guided the path of the Manufacture, since excellence naturally
generates true emotions.

Above and beyond a mere statement of intent, excellence is an integral part
of daily reality at Zenith. There are no compromises and only the best
is considered acceptable. While the strength of the Manufacture lies in
regrouping a broad range of skills, its primary wealth lies in the men and
women who master and pass them on. Their experience and their deft gestures are tokens of excellence, revealing the power of the craftsmanship
they convey. Whatever the part produced, its hand finishing bears the guarantee of undeniable added value: it is the unmistakable signature of Fine
Watchmaking. At Zenith, each movement is thus treated to the most refined
finishing and decoration. Circular graining, bevelling, guilloché work and
Côtes de Genève are all signs of the care devoted to parts of which some
will remain forever hidden inside cases that are all crafted in keeping with
Zenith’s very own rules of excellence.
V IRTUOSO ARTISANS
Beveller, engraver, polisher, gemsetter: the work of these artisans with their golden fingers fascinates through its blend of virtuosity and infinitely rigorous gestures. Each element, however tiny, is important here, since
nothing must be left to chance in ensuring the perfectly smooth running

From hand polishing moon-phase discs to meticulously fashioning the curve
of the hands, the Manufacture is a temple of fine details and of care devoted
to parts that are sometimes too small to be seen without a magnifying glass.
All the artisans master skills nurtured by their own experience in order to
make their own contribution to the finished work. Like all parts involved
in making a watch, the diamonds selected by Zenith meet the highest quality standards and take into account not only the cut, size and carat weight,
but also the colour and clarity of the gemstone. Keenly attentive to the
honesty, legality, transparency and good management that must govern
trading in precious stones, the Manufacture Zenith has put in place tried
and tested processes that have earned it certification with the Responsible
Jewellery Council (RJC), an organisation dedicated to upholding the highest
ethical, social and environmental standards.
While undoubtedly masterpieces of technical brilliance, Zenith timepieces
are first and foremost living creations that beat, vibrate… and touch the
human heart. While their mechanical complexity is astounding in itself, the

This is the realm of world-changing visions. Audacity and a taste for exploration are the watchwords. It’s about taking a different view. Beyond
any existing boundaries. Beyond the present. The spirit of true visionaries because there are still so many possibilities waiting to be explored.
This is a domain reaching new heights of cutting-edge techniques. Time
counts here, considered perhaps more than anywhere else on earth
as the ultimate precious commodity. It is expressed through the purity
of peerless horological innovation. This is a field brimming with intelligence nurtured by the spirit of discovery, tirelessly aspiring to progress
and literally boundless. Independent and unafraid of change, it is built

A masterful accomplishment in terms of both horology and craftsmanship, this 10-piece limited edition is unique on the Fine Watchmaking
scene. Its fusée and chain transmission system compensates for
losses in isochronism in order to ensure constant force throughout
the running of the watch, while the gyroscopic module at 6 o’clock
annihilates the detrimental effects of gravity by maintaining the
regulating organ in an invariably horizontal position. To sublimate
this avant-garde mechanism, Zenith highlights a wide variety of
sophisticated hand-craftsmanship techniques. Implementing such
rare skills as cloisonné enamel, micro-engraving and micro-painting,
the artisan devotes long hours of hand workmanship to creating a
unique work of art in tribute to Christopher Columbus.

This model has no equivalent in the field of Fine Watchmaking. With
its gyroscopic module that enables the regulating organ to remain
constantly horizontal – however the watch itself is positioned – and
thus to protect the mechanism from the effect of earthly gravity, the
line of Christophe Colomb models is truly unique. This principle ensures enhanced regularity of the escapement, without the position of
the watch interfering with the rate of the movement – an approach
that thereby improves precision. By also incorporating a fusée and
chain escapement that regulates the torque transmitted to the gear
trains, the Christophe Colomb Hurricane model offers an impressive
combination of advanced features.

A concentrated blend of Zenith DNA, this chronograph associates the
historical colours of the first 1969 El Primero model with the iconic
dial cut-out revealing the beating heart of the movement, that became
a true signature of the Manufacture at the dawn of the 21st century. Loyal to the original column-wheel construction, the automatic
chronograph calibre beating at the heart of the El Primero Chronomaster 1969 nonetheless merges past and present through a silicon
lever and escape-wheel made using eminently modern technologies.

On October 14th 2012, Felix Baumgartner made history by becoming
the first man to break the sound barrier during freefall. With him was
the El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10 th chronograph. Despite
the incredible statistics clocked up during this feat – the accelerations, the temperature differences and the variations in atmospheric
pressure – the watch continued running as smoothly as ever at the
end of the jump which lasted 9.18 minutes and set a triple record for
the first free-falling human to break the sound barrier, the highest freefall jump (38,969.4 m), as well as the freefall speed record
at 1,357.6 km/h, meaning Mach 1.25.

In 1997, Zenith developed the Rainbow Flyback model in response to
a set of technical specifications drawn up by the French Air Force. The
brand with the guiding star now draws inspiration from this precision
instrument for a 250-piece limited series available exclusively from
Zenith boutiques. Inside an innovative case in black tialum – a light
and resistant titanium and aluminium alloy – beats the automatic
El Primero Calibre 405 B featuring characteristics borrowed from
the 1997 model: the same 1/10 th of a second precision, the same
construction around a column wheel, as well as the same flyback
function serving to start, stop and restart the chronograph with
a single press on the pushpiece. On the dial side, the 3 o’clock
minutes counter echoing that of the 1997 version comes in colours
enabling night-time readability in infrared-lit cockpits.

TO TA K E FLI G HT
There are instruments that lend their help in capturing dreams. A moon?
A sun? Definitely a sky in any case. A tribute to those who dare. To those
who have dared. A chance to believe in the unbelievable. It’s time to take
a higher view. To defy the laws of nature. To disobey gravity. To revel in
the pleasure of those who unfold their wings. This will imply enlisting
support and finding the tools they need to experience this transcendent
feeling. These are within reach. They are the same as ever. The magical
complexity of the inner workings is recognisable at first glance, exuding
an aura of incomparable reliability. Such are the companions chosen
by the most freedom-loving spirits on the planet. Those who never give
up, so long as there are new horizons waiting to be explored, and other
dimensions to be discovered. A time of dreams come true.

500-PIECE RED BARON LIMITED EDITION
Right from the early days of aviation, Zenith created onboard
instruments that contributed to formidable conquests, such as
Louis Blériot’s cross-channel flight in 1909. The 1930s saw the
advent of the famous Zenith Type 20, which the Manufacture is now re-issuing complete with vintage characteristics: luminescent oversized Arabic numerals ensuring impeccable readability, as well as
a large ratcheted crown enabling adjustment with pilot’s gloves.
Housed inside a generous 48 mm-diameter case, the automatic
Elite Calibre 693 is equipped with the GMT or dual-time function, while the engraved caseback bears a medallion stamped with
the effigy of Blériot’s plane.

of precision and reliability, capable of conveying the wildest dreams.

This annual calendar model stems from a cooperative endeavour
between the Musée International d’Horlogerie (MIH), its curator
Ludwig Oeschslin, and the Manufacture Zenith. Its design clearly refers to the noblest horological traditions, with a guilloché dial
and hand-fitted facetted hour-markers and dauphine hands. The
ingenious automatic El Primero 4054 movement drives an annual calendar (requiring just one manual adjustment per year at the
end of February) serving to display the date, the day of the week
and the month.

A tribute to the first ever integrated automatic chronograph, the new
El Primero Calibre 400 B beating at the heart of the Captain Chronograph “Lady” was launched in 2009 to mark the 40 th anniversary of
this horological legend. Celebrating a unique heritage, this chronograph interprets chronometric precision in the feminine mode. Elegant Roman numerals, each punctuated by a diamond hour-marker,
stand out against the guilloché dial, while the case radiates timeless elegance with a dainty gemsetting totalling approx. 0.65 cts or
0.95 cts, depending on the version.

A blend of tradition and creative daring, Captain Moonphases embodies the elegance of a timeless classic with an extreme degree of technical sophistication. Beating at the heart of a remarkably understated
case, the ultra-thin Elite Calibre 691 features small seconds, a large
date and a moon-phase function while measuring just 5.67 mm thin.
The sapphire caseback provides a plunging view into the gear wheels
of this clever mechanism, while the cambered dial features a traditional guilloché motif surrounded by applied hour-markers.

Capturing the essence
of a centuries-old tr adition
A return to essentials. Moons have waned and waxed, seconds have
slipped by, and yet they are still there, captured in the perpetual running
of the movement. An anthem to the best-counted hours. To decomposed
minutes – the purest of them all. A tribute to the best-kept times. To the
sources of a past that continues to excel. Certain people have gained
knowledge of discreet treasures that retain their perpetual radiance.
Shining inside cases that each individual can carry around with them,
the precious magic is passed on through the undiminished admiration
of time-honoured skills. It all began with those who gave birth to the
legend. Their descendants honour a form of modernity epitomising the
quintessence of life and movement.

Embodying the philosophy of absolute performance, the Star Open
watch pays homage to the El Primero calibre. From the very first
glance, this feminine watch draws the gaze to its cushion-shaped
case and to the heart-shaped opening revealing the legendary
mechanical automatic movement, El Primero Calibre 4062. With
its blue Roman numerals reflecting the deep blue of the elegant
sapphire cabochon set on the crown, the dial indicates the hours
and minutes, while the small seconds are symbolised on a heart at 9 o’clock.

The epitome of classicism and excellence, the Heritage Ultra Thin
Moonphase model draws its inspiration from the legacy of models
that have contributed to forging the Zenith legend. Poetically marking off time with a moon-phase display at 6 o’clock, it is an anthem
to slenderness. At just 3.97 mm thin, its automatic Elite Calibre
692 fits smoothly inside an ultra-thin 33 mm-diameter case, while
the sapphire crystal caseback reveals the “Côtes de Genève” motif
executed in keeping with the finest watchmaking traditions.

G UARANTEE
Zenith watches are complex, high-precision and extremely technical products. Before leaving our Manufacture in Switzerland, our watches undergo
numerous rigorous quality and performance tests, some of them lasting
several days. That is why your watch is guaranteed against any manufacturing flaw for two years as of its date of purchase. You can also obtain an additional third year of guarantee by registering on our website at www.zenith-watches.com
MAINTENANCE
Your Zenith watch is equipped with a complex Manufacture movement entirely
developed and produced in-house by Zenith. The lifespan of a Zenith watch
may extend over several generations, provided it is given the indispensable
care required to preserve it. Having your watch regularly maintained contributes to maintaining its exceptional performances as well as to restoring
its timeless visual appearance. To ensure it runs smoothly over the long
term and also to verify its water resistance, your watch must be submitted
for periodic maintenance. Zenith recommends having a check and where
necessary an overhaul performed every three to five years by an official
authorised service centre.
