Bridgewater are closed to through
traffic during the parade on Tuesday,

t’s been an exciting week at SHAID. Cats Fay and Tam were adopted. Fay went home and the next day the gentleman returned
to adopt sibling, Tam. How great for the girls to remain together
with their new forever family. Cloe the dog was also adopted this
past week. We are very happy for all the pets who found forever
homes.
SHAID is happy to be holding its annual summer Open House on
August 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We will have snacks, beverages and
much more for everyone. It is a great time to visit SHAID and meet
the staff, board of directors, volunteers and all of the pets residing
at SHAID. We welcome everyone to this event and look forward to
seeing you all.
Calendar planning is well underway for our 2016 calendars. If you
are interested in putting your pet’s photo in the calendar, please contact SHAID for all the details or visit our website, http://www.shaid.

and he also has long fur. Sandy

old. After being together for
eight years, SHAID feels it is

who is between one and two
years old. Julie is a very beautiful girl; she has unique coloured eyes — one is blue and

Dear Frenchys
A
llow me to introduce myself. I am your very best customer. I
go shopping at your store several times each month. I give you
great testimonials. When someone says, “I love your dress,” I
don’t hesitate to say, “Thanks, I got it at Frenchys! Only $5.75! It cost
more to dry-clean it!” And I don’t discriminate either. Whether in
Liverpool, Coldbrook or Digby, whenever I find myself at a hockey
tournament, there is familiar comfort in the local Frenchys.
My love affair with Frenchys started as a toddler, when my mother
and aunts forgot me there. I completely understand how that could
have happened. I suspect they were still riding high, euphoric after
scoring some great finds. It was only after their excitement settled
down that they realized I wasn’t in the car. No one could be more
understanding of how such a thing could happen than me. I suffer
from no childhood abandonment issues. In fact,
our mutual love of Frenchys has brought us
closer.
It’s that feeling of euphoria that keeps me
coming back. The digging, sorting, and rooting
until I find what it is that I didn’t even know
I wanted. I feel as if I put in some labour, and
the compensation is that classic find that I can
add to my wardrobe for only a few dollars. That
feeling is so exciting that I often forget about
those times when I left empty handed.
So now that you know just how loyal a
customer I actually am, I must be honest and
tell you just how confused I am with your
decision to hang up the pants. I’m assuming that
you were wanting to attract a new market and
make Frenchys shopping easier for those who
aren’t interested in doing all the digging that
some of your loyal Frenchys lovers like myself
do. I get it. That makes perfect sense. Good for you for making it
easier. But therein lies the problem. By removing the challenge, you’re
denying me the excitement.
I’m sure there are a lot of people who appreciate that the pants are
now hung up according to sizes, but I can’t help but feel that others are
cheating. Why should someone who is the same size as me have the
same opportunity to get the pants that I want if they’re not willing to
put in the work to find them?
And then there’s the need to hang them up after I try them on. I
liked it much better before, when I could just toss them back in the
bin, so much so that I’ve honestly considered removing the dressers
and closet from my room and just put my clothes in bins. That would
make life so much easier.
The simple act of hanging up the pants isn’t going to diminish my
love for Frenchys. I will remain a fan. I will continue to shop there as
much as I always have. But I urge you, I’m begging really, please don’t
hang up the blouses.

Engagement as an
employability skill
S
kills such as getting along with others, overcoming shyness, and developing a willingness to learn can help us
get and keep employment. I’ve been referring to these as
“employability skills.”
Even if you don’t care deeply about your workplace, such
skills are still worthwhile as they increase satisfaction in nonwork life, too!
The skill I’ve chosen for this last look at employability is
one that can make one’s whole life more satisfying when we
choose to use it. It’s the skill of engagement.
Do you know what engagement looks like? Have you been
in a store where the customer-service folks want to make sure
that you get exactly what you want and do their best to ensure
that you are delighted?
What’s the opposite? Folks who just go through the motions,
who reluctantly do the bare minimum while waiting for quitting time to roll around.
Who do you think is happier at their work?
In your experience, when you are somewhere that you don’t
want to be, doing something that you
don’t want to be doing, how does time
pass? Does it fly? Or does it drag?
Now, how about when you are fully
engaged and absorbed? How does time
pass then? Might you look up from
what you are doing and be shocked that
hours have flown by?
Engagement makes time go faster; it
also makes work more satisfying. Getting involved and interested can make a
huge difference for you and the people
around you.
You might think, “That’s easy for
people who have interesting work. But

I have a boring job. There is nothing to
get engaged in.”
If that’s the way you see it, then I invite you to take another look.
Perhaps your job involves repetitive tasks. If so, look for
ways to do those tasks better, more efficiently, or with less
stress. Not only does it make the work itself more interesting,
it may help you improve your job!
Perhaps your job requires interaction with people, whether
customers, suppliers, or co-workers. If so, you have lots of opportunities for engagement. How? Take an interest in people.
What is it that they need and want from you? (Hint: you can
often find out by asking them.)
Then, try delivering what they want in the best possible
way. Try surprising them by delivering beyond their expectations. Observe what happens. Did your job suddenly become
more interesting, and potentially more satisfying?
Disengagement sometimes gets tangled up with dissatisfaction. And dissatisfaction often comes from thoughts of “they.”
For example, “They don’t like me. They are only in it for the
money. They are trying to take advantage of me. They, they,
they…”
Perhaps your cynicism is justified. However, is choosing disengagement making your life better?
If your workplace is truly awful, try engaging fully in the
search for a better one.
If you choose to stay, you may as well try to make your
workplace as satisfying as possible. Why not try engagement?
Really give it your all. See if it makes work (and life) more fun.
