Itinerary
DAY 1 Monday 1 Sept 2014
DAY 9 Tuesday 9 Sept 2014
Rome
The group will meet Robert Stock at 3pm at Rome airport, followed by a sightseeing tour
of Rome with a local guide. We see the Colosseum, the Vatican and St Peter’s Basilica. We
visit the Old Town and see the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Piazza Navona and
the Pantheon, one of the few perfectly preserved ancient Roman buildings.
DAY 2 Tuesday 2 Sept 2014Rome – Circolo del Golf di Roma Acquasanta
Today we play our first round of golf at Rome Golf Club. Roma Acquasanta derives its name
from the Via Appia Antica Roman aqueduct that was built around 2000 years ago and
which can be seen from the par 5 seventh hole. The course is laid over an enchanting piece
of parkland landscape and is a wonderfully atmospheric place to play golf. Rome G.C. last
held the Italian Open in 1980 and it is a fitting start to our Italian golf tour.
DAY 3 Wednesday 3 Sept 2014
Florence
Today we depart Rome for Florence, birthplace of the renaissance and capital of Tuscany.
After checking into your hotel we will join a local guide for a walking tour through
Florence. We will see the cathedral, with its enormous dome, the Baptistry, Piazza Signoria,
the famous Ponte Vecchio and more.
DAY 4 Thursday 4 Sept 2014
Florence
A day for individual exploration of this historic city. You may like to visit the Uffizi Gallery,
with its unsurpassed collection of art, the Accademia, with Michelangelo’s statue of David,
or the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens. Robert will recommend an interesting restaurant
for dinner. There will be an optional game of golf for those interested.
DAY 5 Friday 5 Sept 2014
Florence – Circolo del Golf dell’Ugolino
Today we play Ugolino, which is in Chris Santella’s book ‘Fifty Places To Play Golf Before
You Die’ (Stewart, Tabori and Chang 2005). A former Italian Open site, it is a perfect
setting for ‘Golf Course With a View’, with cypress lined fairways rolling through olive
groves, vineyards and orchards.
DAY 6 Saturday 6 Sept 2014
Lucca
Today we travel west to the Tuscan city of Lucca. Lucca features some of Italy’s finest
medieval and renaissance architecture and is surrounded by a continuous thick 16thcentury wall. In the afternoon we will have a guided tour, visiting the extraordinary St
Martin’s Cathedral and Piazza del Mercato (which is built on the site of the ancient Roman
amphitheatre). We see the battlements of Torre Guinigi, and the churches of San Frediano
and San Michele.
DAY 7 Sunday 7 Sept 2014
Lucca – Castelfalfi Golf Club
The 27-hole golf complex is set in 1100 hectares of beautiful Tuscan countryside. The
estate with its borgo and castello dates back 2500 years to Etruscan times and we are sure
that this Tuscan golfing experience will leave you with memories for a life time.
DAY 8 Monday 8 Sept 2014
Portofino
Today we travel to the beautiful Ligurian Riviera and Santa Margherita. It is a day for
individual exploration where you can visit by boat and walking, one of the most beautiful
ports in the whole of the Mediterranean, Portofino. The evening offers an opportunity to
savour some superb Italian seafood.
Como
Today we say farewell to Portofino and travel to Como. Shelley once wrote “This lake
exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty”. In the evening you can try an ‘Aperol Spritz’ in
one of the piazza’s overlooking the lake. Robert will guide those interested in dining as a
group, to a good restaurant.
DAY 10 Wednesday 10 Sept 2014
Como – Circolo Golf Villa D’Este
Today we play Villa D’Este, which lies in the Como hills and is ‘a jewel in the Italian
golfing crown’. Fairways lined with birch, chestnut and pine lead you through undulating
and fascinating vistas. In the ‘Gold Book’ of the club you will find the signatures of Kings
and Queens of Britain, Belgium, Spain and Greece, as well as Hollywood royalty, Bing
Crosby and Clark Gable.
DAY 11 Thursday 11 Sept 2014
Como
Today we visit Villa Carlotta, known for its beautiful setting and spectacular gardens.
It was built in 1745 and later given as a wedding present to Carlotta, Duchess of Saxe
Meiningen. We take the ferry across the lake to the lovely town of Bellagio. Occupying a
magnificent site on the promontory dividing Lake Lecco from Lake Como, it is known for
its pretty streets, villas and gardens. We return to Como by ferry in the afternoon.
DAY 12 Friday 12 Sept 2014
Verona – Golf Club Arzaga
The course is situated around a 15th-century palazzo and one of “The Leading Hotels of
the World”. This is a Nicklaus II designed links-style golf course that will be perfect, after
our Villa D’Este tree-lined adventure. The non-golfers will be able to enjoy the spa at the
hotel or visit one of the towns on Lake Garda.
DAY 13 Saturday 13 Sept 2014
Verona
This morning we will enjoy a guided tour of Verona. Verona is the home of Romeo and
Juliet as well as the Roman Arena and has World Heritage Status for its urban structure
and architecture.
DAY 14 Sunday 14 Sept 2014
Venice
This morning we travel to Venice, once the head of a maritime empire. Unique for its
canals and renaissance palazzos, Venice is one of the most fascinating cities in Italy. In
the afternoon we have a sightseeing tour visiting St Mark’s Square, see the Grand Canal, St
Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. We will wind our way through the narrow alleyways
to the market square of the Rialto. In the evening you may like to indulge by taking in an
opera at the most beautiful theatre in the world, ‘Le Finiche’.
DAY 15 Monday 15 Sept 2014
Venice
This morning, we have an excursion to the island of Murano, known as the glass-making
island. There will be an opportunity to enjoy some excellent, good-value shopping. The
afternoon will be free for individual exploration. This evening we will have our celebratory
farewell dinner.
DAY 16 Tuesday 16 Sept 2014
Venice – Circolo di Golf Venezia
It is not every day that you get to take a boat to play golf but that’s exactly what we’re doing
today. The golf course on Venice Lido was built in 1928 after a conversation between Henry
Ford and Count Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata. Built around an Austrian 17th-century fort,
the ramparts built to keep out pirates from the East, provides an excellent teeing area
where you can explode your ball off the first tee. The course winds its way around mature
cyprus trees and water hazards. The lunch (optional) in the clubhouse afterwards is a
fitting end to our grand Italian golfing adventure.
DAY 17 Wednesday 17 Sept 2014
Venice
Today we transfer to Venice airport for our early afternoon
flight to Australia.
