Vice Chancellor's Message
"We are living in a very Challenging environment with
ever-increasing competition. Our only weapon is academic
excellence. If every student thinks for a while everyday
whether he/she is utilizing the available resources and
facilities in the University to the maximum and is
preparing himself/herself adequately to meet the challenges
ahead, it would bring a positive change in attitudes. This
would result in realization for more productive utilization
of time and available resources."
Prof. Dr. Mansoor Akbar Kundi
DIRECTORATE OF DISTANCE EDUCATION
GOMAL UNIVERSITY DERA ISMAIL KHAN
(PROSPECTUS 2012-14)
Brief History of District Dera Ismail Khan
Dera Ismail Khan is a city in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, situated on the west bank
of the Indus River. The city is a divisional administrative center, & well known for its lacquered
woodwork, glass and ivory ware, mats, and sarongs. Newer industries include soap, textile,

washed away by the Indus River & the new town was built in 1823.The city is seat of Gomal
University, Qurtuba University and numerous colleges affiliated with other Universities.
Campus History of Gomal University
Former Prime Minister Mr. Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the founder of the Gomal University
D.I.Khan and he laid down its foundation stone on 1st May, 1974 to put forward his vision of highly
educated Pakistan to meet the modern world challenges in every aspect of life.
The very first Vice Chancellor Nawab Allah Nawaz Khan Sadozai was the Founding Vice-Chancellor
who also donated 11000 Kanal Land for the establishment of the University.
Gomal University is the 2nd oldest University of the Province and (probably the biggest). Divided
into two campuses, New (main) and City Campus (25%).Gomal University is one of the reputable
universities in Pakistan offering a wide range of courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate
levels besides research degree programs in most of the departments.
The university is committed to excellence in teaching & research, which is projected in the fact that
it has highly competent and well experienced staff and all the requisite facilities ranging from

1

discrimination of caste, creed, gender, geographical boundaries, beliefs, religion or language. The
University envisions itself as a premier national, academic & research institution to develop sound
and strong knowledge base in all the disciplines of the University by strengthening teaching and
learning by promoting scientific research
in physical and
social
sciences.
Develop interns of education that promotes quality scientific and technological development,
freedom, unity, harmonization, peace, and understanding of our cultural & historical diversity
Distance Education Program
Distance education, also called distance learning, is a combination of on-campus & off-campus
activities, and a method of offering education either through correspondence or other means of
modern technology. Distance education focuses on delivering quality education for students who
are not physically present. It enables students to receive education from at far-off places. Started in
1946, the University of South Africa is one of the oldest distance education universities.
The origin of distance education can be traced back to the 19th (1840) when Sir Issac Pitman, the
inventor of shorthand, came up with an idea of offering courses through mail. In the 1900s, a
department for correspondence courses was started at the University of Chicago. In the later years,
a number of universities also started such departments. Until 1969, distance education remained
an important means of education in only a few countries. In 1969, the establishment of the United
Kingdom's Open University brought about a significant change in the field of distance education.
In modern distance education, educational materials are given to the students through various
means such as tutorials, audiotapes, videos, satellite broadcasts and CD-ROMs. Remote databases,
e-mail, and video conferencing using broadband network are also used. Interactive
videoconferencing helps a teacher deliver lectures to different groups in other classrooms, known
as a virtual classroom. The various facilities and services available through the network include
online registration, availability of online video materials, dissemination of course materials and
constant communication with tutors, instructors and fellow students through e-mail
“Distance education has opened the gates of “Learning Anytime and Anywhere”.
2
Establishment of Directorate for Distance Education by HEC
Islamabad.
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has decided to establish a separate Directorate for
Distance Education at six selected universities, to speed up the effort to make distance learning a
success in Pakistan
1: University of the Punjab, Lahore.
2: University of Peshawar, Peshawar.
3: University of Karachi , Karachi.
4: University of Sindh, Jamshoro.
5: Gomal University .D.I.Khan.
6: BahauddinZakariya University, Multan.
The decision has been taken keeping in view the large number of students appearing annually in
graduate and postgraduate examinations in arts subjects as private candidates, in public sector
universities.
Of these private candidates, a large majority fail to qualify the examination due to which there is an
increase in the dropout ratio at graduate and undergraduate level, incurring a big loss of money,
time and hope for the candidates as well as society.
Realizing the untoward situation, the Higher Education Commission has taken up the issue with the
stakeholders holding meetings with experts on Distance Education, and finally has come up with
the conclusion that concrete measures must be taken to make distance learning a success in the
country, for the provision of quality higher education.
It has been decided that private students will be recognized and dealt as Distant Student and
quality will be equally important for distance education to serve a significant number of students in
the country.
The Directorate of Distance Education, Gomal University Dera Ismail
Khan.
The Directorate of Distance Education has been set up at the main campus, Gomal University to
3
improve the educational standards of the private/ Distant student.
Objectives of the program
1: To make higher education reach the unreached.
2: To provide life time continuing education without any discrimination.
3: To provide education to the mass at a comparatively lower cost
4: To open the doors of education to the drop-outs and the ones who are denied admission in
formal educational system.
5: To provide quality education through easily approachable medium like correspondence materials
& high quality educational audio and video supports, which enable the students to study at home
more effectively.
6: To provide distant students HEC recognized degrees.

Department of Mass Communication
(masscom.degu.edu.pk)
The department of journalism was established with the very inception of The Gomal University in 1974.The
course of studies have been updated periodically over the years. The department now offers a composite
degree of masters in mass communication. It includes a focus on journalism with three practice based
papers and a focus on mass communication reflected in several courses in communication and social
sciences theory & research methods. The students are also given some training in MS Word processing and
computer analysis of survey and content analysis data-sets.
A recent job absorption study revealed that over 60% of the graduates of the department have been
absorbed in professionally related jobs. The rest occupied jobs in the other areas in the job-market. This can
safely be assumed to be a high rate of job absorption considering the present high figures of educated
employed in the country.
The department possesses a well-stocked library containing latest titles published abroad. Included among
its holdings, and in keeping with the multidisciplinary focus of mass communication, are reputed foreign
research journals belonging to communication and other social sciences.
Additionally, almost all leading national dailies and some foreign news magazines are also subscribed. The
