FLU DAYS - A GREAT BIG THANK YOU
We like to say "A GREAT BIG THANK YOU" to all those who
contributed so generously by participating in our fund raising raffle
in aid of our "Spirometer Micro Lab" project. Also, thank you to those
generous patients who kindly gave us a donation as well. It was also
very encouraging for us to have so many people show such a genuine
interest in what we were aiming to achieve. Together with the funds
we anticipate raising during our Christmas Bazaar, our target is virtually
in sight, and as a result, hope to have purchased the equipment and
have it ready for use, in the surgery, by Christmas.
This far exceeds our expectations and is purely down to the support
and generosity of our Patients, so once again, thank you very much.

MORTON’S FORK’S MISSION TO PUT MINSTER
BACK ON THE MAP
As many of you know we are trying to arrange a meeting with Thanet District
Council with regards to “Putting Minster back on the Map”.
After hearing many people remark that Minster is losing its village feel and is
being left out by the rest of the Isle of Thanet, we met with Roger Gale last week.
Mr Gale told us what we already know, that this is a lovely Village.
We would like to take this opportunity to organise, with the assistance of local
people and businesses, to put Minster back on the map, with community focused
events all year round and encourage visitors back to the area.
Minster has a lot to offer , as well as being a wonderful place to live, and we
think it is not promoted well enough in the local area.
Local businesses in the Village have been approached and we hope to set up a
meeting very soon to see what we can do to, individually or collectively, to raise
our profile. However, we would like to encourage everyone in the Village to be
involved and if anyone has any ideas for promoting the Village, please contact
Shaun or Stuart at Morton’s Fork on 823000, or pop in for a coffee and a chat.
Other towns are losing their businesses and we do not want this happening in
Minster.
Yours sincerely, Shaun Newstead, Morton’s Fork.
BLOOD DONOR SERVICE AND MINSTER VILLAGE HALL
As a Trustee of the village hall, I would like to correct some strange rumours
circulating the village regarding the Blood Donor Service and the village hall. The
service has used the hall three times a year for the last 20 years and they have always
paid for the hiring. They have always hired Fridays and the hall has accommodated
them. In fact, they have already used two Fridays this year. Their booking service
wished to change their third hiring to a Tuesday which, due to prior bookings, we
could not accommodate, so they arranged to have a mobile unit in the Bell Inn car
park.
If, in the current economic climate, the service feels that our hire charges are
too high for the number of donors attending, that is entirely their decision, but bear
in mind that the village hall is a charity and our income is made from hiring out the
premises. It is management policy that the hall is never hired out free of charge as
that would set a president and the many other very worthwhile organisations that
use the hall would also demand it for free and, therefore, we would have no income
to maintain it.
I hope this explains the situation and we will always accommodate the blood
service on Fridays.
Eric James, Trustee of Minster Village Hall.

“A SEAWEED SUCCESS STORY”
Thanet has achieved national acclaim from environmental groups for the way
it deals with its seaweed. Like most other seaside authorities TDC used to have to
pay to have the weed dumped in landfill tips at enormous cost. Three years ago
the Council started to experiment with processing the weed it takes off our beaches
to turn it into compost, which has been used since then by our local farmers to help
produce crops and cut down on expensive fertilisers.
It is a big problem every year. Depending on weather conditions, between 4
to 10 thousand tons can be washed up on our beaches to rot. If we were still tipping
it, it would now cost over £300,000 a year to dispose of it. The Council is continuing
its composting trials with Wye Agricultural College and aims to make the whole
operation a commercial proposition over the next few years.
In view of the recent press comment on this subject of seaweed this may be of
interest to MM readers. Phil Sackett

making time to carry

the Minster area in
the build up to the
Festive
season
thanks to the kind
generosity of the
“Smugglers Retreat

Restaurant, Minster.
Firstly, with his
“Little Elf”, he will
be attending the
“Christmas Bazaar”
at the “Old Schools”
on Saturday 19th November, between 9.00am and 1.00pm, where he will be available
for Parents and Children to take photographs. And the children will be able to
hand their letters to him in person!
While he is there, he has also agreed to draw the raffle that is being run by the
Patient Liaison Group at Minster Surgery, where some lucky children could win a
prize to have “Breakfast with Father Christmas” in his Grotto, or some lucky family
could win a “3 Course Festive Evening Meal” as well!
Next, he will pay a surprise visit to “Minster Primary School” in December,
to personally wish them all a “Happy Christmas” and of course the children will
again be able to hand over their letters in person!
He will then take up residency in his new “Grotto” at the “ Smugglers Retreat
Table Table Restaurant” for the remainder of the month.
For further information on any of these events please ring 821200.

JEMIMA’S LOCKET
AMBER’S ADVICE
People are the
custodians of the world’s
wealth; if you want them
to hand some over to
you, you have to be nice
to people!Stuart Wilde
My name is Jemma, I am a local girl who has always loved the village, and it
has always been my dream to open my own shop here.
I knew there was a need for haberdashery supplies due to the popularity of the
various craft groups in the local area. Homeware and gifts were something that I
personally felt were missing from the village and would help the community to shop
local and avoid the traffic and business of getting to Canterbury or Westwood Cross.
The combination of the two aspects came naturally to me as an avid seamstress
with a background in fashion and interiors.
In the recession so many people are trying to find alternatives to spending a
fortune in ‘built up generic shops’, I am trying to provide inspiration and materials
for those who want to have a go and make it themselves, plus I also offer affordable
unique products for those who love a different shopping experience.
My shop will be open for Late Night Shopping in the village on Tuesday 29th
November and every Thursday in December, leading up to Christmas, from 9am to
7pm.
Our website at www.jemimaslocket.co.uk will be live from early in November

EVENING WALK
On one of my recent evening walks, dozens of house martins were flying about me, feeding
up, getting a good intake of protein ready to roost for the night, and soon their migration.

Before this point in time I had walked to the top of the village, and then down through the

A charming lady I met today
at the Salvation Army Hall,
To celebrate 125 years since day
number one,
When this wonderful Army
originally begun,
A few weeks ago I judged a
competition of poetry,
I chose a poem, the lines a joy
to read, decidedly
Little did I know, the author
of these lines,
Was an elderly lady of one year
plus ten times nine,
I do not need to tell you this means
Queenie is 91 years of age,
Her words were a pleasure to read
on her page,
To meet Queenie today was a
pleasure for me,
I pray this lady will live to well past one
hundred and three,
I judged Queenie’s poem as the best,
In my opinion far better than all the rest.

GREENSTREET
JOINERY Ltd
Messages....
Minster Mayhems and their friends will be dancing at Late Night
Shopping on Tuesday 29 November. Please come along from 6.20 and
support them; they have been working really hard this year at the Folk
Festivals in the area representing Minster and Cliffsend children.
Mayhems have a reputation now for excellent Morris dancing and fantastic
Maypole ribbon patterns. The children would like some more friends to come and join
them as some have progressed into the adult sides and more are needed to carry with
the good work so far.
Mayhems meet Fridays in term time at The Old Schools from 5-6pm and it
costs £1 per child to attend - this pays for the hall hire.

MINSTER BOWLS CLUB
2011 A SEASON OF ACHIEVEMENT
The Minster flag is flying high this year, and deservedly so, as the
playing achievements on the green have been more than matched by the
sterling efforts of the dedicated volunteers who work ‘behind the scenes’ ensuring
the whole process works smoothly. So fulsome thanks and praise to those who
made success possible, the players and the volunteer supporters. In short well done
Team Minster…
A gentle reminder; the AGM on 25th November, is your chance to vote and
contribute to the wellbeing of the Club. The Management Committee will be
putting forward the following proposal:
“A position to be created on the Management Committee for a Short Mat
Section Competitions Secretary”. The purpose is twofold. Firstly, to increase short
mat section representation on the main Committee and secondly, to bring more
width and strengthen the Short Mat section committee.
Your committee is delighted to announce that a Dance is scheduled for Friday
6th January. The band has been booked and a pig, cow and turkey are being
fattened for the cold carvery. This is expected to be a great start for our 75th
anniversary celebrations. Tickets will be on sale shortly and available at the AGM.
The idea of a firework display has been thwarted by the greenkeeper who refused
the placing of roman candles and rockets on the green. Spoil sport! Finally,
nominations are still required to fill committee positions especially that of secretary.
If you do not wish to be on the committee but can help in any way please contact,
Ken or Brian Davis. Help with organising teas for home summer fixtures would
be greatly appreciated. I hope to see you at the AGM.

MINSTER-IN-THANET WI
At the October institute meeting, president Joan Backler
welcomed eight visitors, four of whom enrolled during the
evening. They heard a report of our recent day of classes with
tutors in mosiacs, sugarcraft and tai-chi, with lunches cooked and
served by a team of W.I. members and later joined members in listening and
participating in an interesting, and at times, entertaining talk by voice coach Dr.
Peter Giles.
Refreshments were accompanied by cakes baked by committee members,
which were sold at £1 per portion to raise funds for the W.I.’s own Denman
College.
Our next meeting is on TUESDAY 8th NOVEMBER. This our Annual
Meeting, for members only, is when a new committee will be elected and new
officers appointed, and at which wine and cheese, and cakes, will be served at
refreshment time.
An open Coffee and Chat morning will be held in the committee room
of the Village Hall on THURSDAY, 17th NOVEMBER – non-members will
be warmly welcomed.

LATE NIGHT SHOPPING
MESSY CHURCH
Late Night Shopping in Minster will be on the 29th
November.
Minster School Choir will be singing outside The Gossip
Shop from 6pm. The Christmas lights will be officially
switched on by Luke Lucas of X Factor fame ably assisted
by Miss Minster and her Princesses at 6pm.
Minster Mayhems and their friends will be Morris Dancing
in Norton Drive to entertain you while you are waiting to
see Santa in his Grotto also in Norton Drive.
The Minster Salvation Army Band will be playing during
the evening.
Participating businesses will be open until 8 or 8.30pm
offering special offers or treats to customers.
This year we welcome the two newest businesses in the
village namely, ‘Greens’ the Greengrocers and ‘Jemima’s
Locket’ they are opening for their 1st Late Night. Please
make sure you drop in and say hello.
You will be able to meet Luke after the School Choir has
finished singing, you will also be able to buy his official
souvenirs which he will gladly sign for you.
This has become another annual event in our lovely
village. We do try and make it a special evening and a
start to the Christmas Festivities. This does cost the
businesses a fair bit to open for the evening and if they
aren't supported they will not open in the future and this
evening will be finished. This is also the reason that we
regret we do not allow other traders to attend ( ‘Simon the
Gloman’ originates from Colebrook and Sturrock and
donates towards the Xmas Lights).
Please come along and support your local shops and
meet up with friends, the atmosphere is fantastic. As the
saying goes "Use it or lose it". We look forward to seeing
you all on the 29th. Karen

MINSTER PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE - Meeting 4th October 2011
19
SDS ROOFING
Policing
Members voiced concerns that the police presence in the rural areas would stop
in the near future and be replaced by a PCSO service. Minster had low crime figures
and the fear was that these figures would increase if there was not a police presence
within the Village. The Council noted the comments of P.C. Burgess on reported
crime figures and how these details could be accessed by typing in the post code on
the Kent Police website. It was noted that there has been incidents of anti-social
behaviour at the Recreation Ground and other locations within the Village and
expressed concerns that unless these matters were dealt with by the Police residents
may take their own unilateral action. The Council agreed that they write to the Chief
Constable of Kent Police expressing the concerns of the Village that the plans to
reorganise policing services within rural areas would result in crime figures increasing.
Queens Jubilee Celebrations
The Parish Council agreed to support in principle the staging of a Son et Lumiere
subject to further costings being made available.
Planning
1. Following a request by Minster Scouts to erect a scouts hut on the Recreation
Ground, members noted that having considered the report of the Clerk, that
the covenants on the Recreation Ground would not allow for the erection of
this building.
2. The application for the demolition of the cooling towers at Sandwich be
‘called in’ to ensure it is heard by the Council’s Planning Committee.

KIACC
Cllr Day reported that TDC had refused a variation to the night flying agreement
and that the decision had been referred to the Scrutiny Committee.
Highways
The Clerk tabled an email from Kent Highways indicating that the work to
resurface Tothill Street had been suspended due to Southern Gas Networks scheduled
mains replacement for the length of Tothill Street and not confined to the connection
to hotel at the top of the hill. However Kent Highways confirmed that routine
maintenance will continue in Tothill Street and its priority within the allowable
budget for resurfacing assessment once road space becomes available.

Parking Outside School
When your parking outside of school I hope you’re
parking in a proper spot. Because when I’m walking
home from school I’m seeing cars parked on the
path. So please can you not park on the path,
because people can’t get through.

Jodie and Mollie
Mollie, she is so talented she is really good at maths.
The thing that is really good about Mollie is she is a
good friend and she is good with people in year 6.
Jodie she is really cool, she is funny as a bunny she
is chatty but happy, she is jumpy and bubbly and is
pretty much Jodie

Winter
In the winter there is Christmas and birthdays and
snow and rain and a lot of cool things.
Kids like to play in the snow.
Adults like to cuddle up on the sofa and drink tea.
Now Christmas is a lovely celebration you get
presents and get time to spend with your family.

Chocolate
Chocolate comes in all different shapes and sizes.
My favourite chocolate is Thornton’s. Mollie’s is
Cadburys. And Maddies is Lindor’s. What’s your
favourite?

M&M CHAMPIONS
On the 11th of September me and my sister Martha
took part in the Trailblazers tour Championship at
Hever Castle Golf Club.
We both came first in our age group and received a
crystal trophy, trailblazers hat, a pair of foot joy
shoes, pack of golf balls & a free game on the 9 hole
par 3 at Hever Castle.
To get through to the final we had to come 1st or 2nd
in one of the qualifying events.
Martha came 2nd in the first qualifying event at Hever
and I came 3rd but you have to come in the top 2 to
get through so we entered another qualifying event
at Poult Wood Golf Club and I came 1st and Martha
came 2nd again.
We then both took part in the winning event at Hever
& both won in our age category. We both received a
crystal trophy and a silver claret jug with our names
engraved. Unfortunately we are not able to keep the
claret jug because they are extremely expensive.
Luckily we were able to borrow the jug for a few days
to have the photos from the newspaper taken.
We both enjoy golf thoroughly and this winning has
really boosted our confidence.
