In today’s Gospel
Jesus says: “No one has
greater love than this, to
lay down one’s life for
(John
one’s friends”
15:13).
Then Jesus says
“You are my friends if you
do what I command you.”
The essence of Christianity is “giving
your life” for another, and also “doing”
what is right. In the early Church many
Christians gave their lives as
martyrs. Later on, when the persecutions
ended, many Christians “gave up their
lives” by giving up marriage and
becoming hermits and monks and
nuns.
They chose this “white
martyrdom” because they could not
shed their blood for the Lord in “red
martyrdom.”
But of course there are other ways of
“giving up your life” to show your love
for God and neighbor. We could say
that there is a “marriage martyrdom”
because married people “give their
lives” to each other just like Jesus gave
up His life for His bride the Church (Eph.
5:25). Today is Mother’s Day and so we
remember how mothers care for their
children by giving all of their time, their
energy, their heart and their soul. Moms
always suffer this “mother’s martyrdom”
when they worry and make sacrifices for
their children.
There is also a “commitment
martyrdom” which all of us must
undertake. We must decide to spend
time doing the important things that we
know we should do for the Lord and for
others. We must give up wasting time on
ourselves and our own trivial pursuits. It
is not easy to manage our time well so
that we can do what is right.
That is why I hope that every
parishioner will sign up to attend one of
the free Time Management Seminars that
will be offered at St. Joseph’s Parish
during the coming months. We need to
learn these skills so that we can really
show our love for the Lord and for those
around us! “No one has greater love than
this” to SPEND ONE’S TIME WELL FOR
ONE’S FRIENDS!”
MODEST DRESS IN CHURCH
With the hot weather here, we need to remind everyone of the
importance of dressing appropriately in the house of God. Please avoid
short dresses or shorts, spaghetti straps, and any other immodest attire
which does not cover the shoulders, back, and cleavage.
We ask that men avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts. Thank you for
wearing your Sunday best!

they want to become Catholic. The RCIA process
is also for Catholics who have not yet completed
their sacraments of Confirmation or Holy
Communion.

Eucharistic Office of St. Thomas Aquinas
“...one of the most beautiful in the Roman Breviary…”
B
y August 29, 1261,
Jacques Pantaléon was
elected Pope Urban IV.
Now, there was at that
time in Liège a devout recluse in
whom St. Juliana had inspired a
fervent devotion of the Holy
Eucharist, who spent her time in
adoration of Our Divine Lord in the
Blessed Sacrament. She besought the
Bishop of Liège, Heinrich of Guelders,
to request the Sovereign Pontiff to
extend this beautiful celebration to
the entire Catholic world. Pope Urban
IV, who had long cherished a fervent
devotion for the feast of Corpus
Christi having known well St. Juliana,
granted the petition on September 8,
1264, by publishing the Bull
"Transiturus." Having extolled the love
of Our Savior manifested in the Holy
Eucharist, he ordered the annual
celebration of Corpus Christi on the
Thursday following Trinity Sunday, and
at the same time granted many
Indulgences to the faithful for the
attendance at Mass and at the Office.
This Office, composed at the request of
the secular world! The death of
Pope Urban IV on October 2,
1264, shortly after the
publication of the decree,
somewhat impeded the spread of
the new feast. But Pope Clement
V again took the matter in hand,
and at the General Council of
Vienne (1311), took measures to
implement the feast of Corpus
Christi. His new decree embodied
that of Pope Urban IV, and his
successor, Pope John XXII (of
Sabbatine Privilege fame) also
urged its observance. The
Procession of the Blessed
Sacrament, which was already
held in some places, was endowed
with rich indulgences by Popes
Martin V and Eugene IV. The
pious Bishops of the German
Empire were the first to
accomplish a uniform observance
the Pope by the Angelic Doctor St. Thomas of the new feast (instituted at Köln in
Aquinas, is one of the most beautiful in the 1306, at Worms in 1315, and in
Strasbourg in 1316). In England it was
Roman Breviary, and has been admired
introduced from the continent between
not only for its wonderful devotion, but
1320 and 1325.
also for its literary excellence by those in

"The Mother - The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor
of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more
magnificent than any cathedral --- a dwelling place for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection
of her baby's body. The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in
God's creative miracle to bring new saints to heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are
closer to God the Creator than any other creature. God joins forces with mothers in
performing this act of creation. What on God's good earth is more glorious than this: to be a
mother."

Rosary Tips for Mary’s Month
Decade of 10 Tips for Praying the Family
Rosary More Devoutly,
Especially with Children
1. Avoid forcing or punishing anyone to pray the rosary; let it be a privilege and
pleasure.
2. When someone has to be absent for the rosary, let them know they will be
missed.
3. Younger children may not be able to participate in the entire rosary because it is
too long.
4. Choose a time that is convenient for most in the group, let it be known as
"Rosary Time." It does not have to be the same time every day.
5. Choose a special place that appeals to as many as possible—before a picture or
statue, at an outdoor shrine, or even at bedside.
6. Vary the posture—kneeling, sitting, standing.
7. Let everyone be involved according to age and ability, from quiet attending to
leadership.
8. The family rosary should reflect the loving relationship within the family; for
example, a hug of peace could conclude it.
9. Make the rosary inclusive. If there are guests, invite them to share in it.
10. The rosary is a bouquet, a gift of love from your family to Jesus and Mary.
Patricia Garcia
Luke 1:38 “And Mary said, ‘Behold
the handmaid of the Lord; be it done
unto me according to thy word.’ And the
angel departed from her.” This verses
describe Patricia Garcia perfectly. She
is always willing to help and serve God
and His Church at all times. Patricia is
22 years old and the second of 5 kids.
She is currently going to Modesto Junior
College to become an Elementary
School teacher. She currently serves our
parish on our high school CORE team,
where she leads a small group of high
school girls as an example of what it
means to be a daughter of God and a
young Catholic woman.
Her favorite part about being a
member of the high school CORE Team
is being in an environment where she
knows she will never be judged and the
people she is around will always accept
and care about her. She is also a part of
our Peer Ministry Team Militia Mariae, a
parish bookstore volunteer and a World
Youth Day Pilgrim. Thank you, Patricia
for all you do here for our parish and our
youth! You are truly an example of what
it means to say, “YES!” and to give your
life to Christ! THANK YOU!

correcto.

¡Señor danos a conocer tu amor!
do sorprenderle dándole algo o haciendo
tiempo reconocerse pecador perdonado.
traiga pasta/arroz, pan, ensalada y postre.
Patricia Garcia
Lucas 1:38 “María dijo entonces, ‘Yo
soy la servidora del Señor, que se
cumpla en mí lo que has dicho.’ Y el
Ángel se alejó.” Este versículo describe
a Patricia García perfectamente. Ella
está siempre lista para ayudar y server
a Dios y Su Iglesia a toda hora. Patricia
Actualmente asiste
a Modesto Junior College y
estudiando para eventualmente
hacerse maestro de una escuela
primaria.
Ella sirve nuestra parroquia ahora
vida a Cristo! ¡¡¡¡¡GRACIAS!!!!!
