A Strong Foundation for the Future
It is our pleasure to present our 2012-2013 Report to the Community, detailing the initiatives and
achievements of the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto. In this report you will read stories of generosity,
stories of partnership, and stories of commitment.
We recognize the strength of our family of donors who are committed to supporting and securing the longterm growth of our Jewish community. We also recognize the strong relationship and trust between the
Jewish Foundation’s experienced team of professionals, selfless volunteers and committee members, our
donors and visionaries that create the extraordinary impact shown through the organizations benefitting
from our philanthropic dollars.
Your participation has allowed the Jewish Foundation to distribute over $24 million throughout Greater
Toronto, Canada, Israel and around the world, supporting close to 300 worthy organizations. Our B’nai
Tzedek Teen Philanthropy program is engaging the next generation of philanthropic leaders, distributing
important dollars and making a tremendous direct impact in our community as well.
This year has seen the establishment of 46 new funds, allowing our Foundation to strengthen to over
750 funds. Planned gifts are increasing, demonstrating a commitment to the future of our community.
We thank you for being part of the Jewish future, and demonstrating the values of tzedakah and tikkun
olam to our next generations.
Sincerely,

Strengthening our Community
The Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto, UJA Federation’s planned giving and endowment arm, is a
unique and transformative centre that acts as a true catalyst for change. In doing so it helps support and
grow one of the world’s great Diaspora communities.
By mobilizing and educating donors and other community leaders about complex quality of life issues in
Jewish Toronto, Israel and across the Jewish world, and providing them with creative and inspiring ways to
become involved, the Jewish Foundation continues to change the world.
A STRONG
FOUNDATION
An endowment fund at the Jewish Foundation provides donors with all the flexibility, involvement, and
recognition of a private foundation while alleviating the stress that goes with financial stewardship
responsibilities. Foundation donors are better able to focus their energies on creating positive change while
Foundation professionals offer knowledge and support that like our community, is second to none.
Regardless of the vehicle donors choose to reach out to those in need; be it through lifetime gifts or deferred
giving programs, donors are given the unique and rewarding opportunity to write a chapter in the ongoing
and inspiring story that is Jewish Toronto.
On behalf of UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, we thank each of you – our generous, compassionate and
visionary donors and partners, for your ongoing commitment to tikkun olam and for helping make Jewish
Toronto a flourishing and vibrant Jewish community for generations to come.
Appreciatively,
Richard Venn

Endowment Achievement Award
Awarded to: Donald Bennett
Don Bennett served a complete term on the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto Board of
Trustees from 2006-2012. During that time the Foundation’s assets and expectancies grew
to more than $500 million. Don was instrumental in securing numerous gifts, served on sub
committees and helped shape the direction of the Foundation.
He is often heard saying that without endowment funds, our community cannot survive.
Endowments are the only way to secure the future. As a community, we can create these
perpetual resources in order to have the means to support social services, health, welfare, and
education throughout the Jewish community here and in Israel. Don leads by example.
In addition to his work with the Jewish Foundation, Don Bennett is a dedicated UJA annual

Societies Have Shown Us So Much
For well over a hundred years, Toronto’s Jewish community has been strengthened by our
Societies. These Mutual Benefit Societies helped, and continue to help make Toronto a place
where Jews can f lourish and prosper – a place that is one of the most vibrant, growing Diaspora
Jewish communities in the world. Societies are part of our history, our present and our future
and are devoted to tzedakah and acts of kindness.

followed their parents’ generous spirits – helping those less fortunate by whatever
means they could. After surviving the horrors of the Holocaust with almost no family,
but a lot of optimism and fond memories of their parents’ kind gestures, they married
and moved to Germany to start a family of their own. With their son Harry, they
moved to Israel and then eventually to Canada where they settled and welcomed a
daughter, Rosalind Reznick. As strangers in a new country, with no extended family or
friends, the Chenstochover Aid Society welcomed the Krakowsky family with open arms.
The Society’s membership, comprised of survivors and children of survivors and their
children, work together to maintain a link with the past, in order to ensure continued
existence of the Society in the future. The Society became a family, and a family affair,
with weddings and bar mitzvahs with all in attendance. Paula and Joseph’s family
quickly grew to include a daughter-in-law, Golda Brown, a son-in-law, Louie Reznick,

Societies came from and tells the story of how they helped

Lion of judah endowment (LOJE)
Legacy society
A woman’s Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) is created to perpetuate a minimum $5,000
annual donation to United Jewish Appeal’s Annual Campaign. This is accomplished by establishing
an endowment fund or leaving a planned gift with a minimum $100,000 commitment.
LOJE
Laurie Sheff
Chair
“I believe in this community, I am inspired by our compassion, conviction and
values and I am not alone. Every Lion of Judah woman is capable of endowing
their gift. Join me in making a gift that is everlasting.”

Our Mission:
Our Vision:
Engage Jewish teens in a lifelong relationship with tzedakah and
tikkun olam (repairing the world) and help cultivate future leaders
within the Jewish community.

IN TO
“Seeing how my children’s participation in B’nai
Tzedek has helped shape each of them into caring,
community-minded young adults – I was inspired to
join the B’nai Tzedek leadership team. This program
is so important because it introduces the next
generation, our children, to the values and rewards
of tzedakah and giving back to the community.”
B A R B AT
AN D
To give teens the power to make a difference through tzedakah and
deepen their commitment to social action.
M IT Z VA H
Through B’nai Tzedek, teenagers are able to establish a charitable fund in their own name with a
minimum donation of $1,000.
Our teen philanthropists learn about projects that need funding and then decide how they want to distribute
their charitable dollars. By exposing teens to this outstanding learning process, they become actively involved
in philanthropy and feel good about their role in improving the world.
B’nai Tzedek is one more gift you can give to your children — it’s the gift of giving.
Nearly 300 youngsters between the ages of 6-13 at the Zipori
Elementary school are benefitting from a recently renovated
basketball court, thanks to Gabe Yallen’s Tzedakah Fund. Kids
are playing basketball throughout the school day and additional
age groups use the court after school hours and on the weekend.
why they got involved...
“I am happy to help people who are less fortunate than I because it is
important to give back to the world. I want to help kids learn with the use
of a computer or tablet.”
Seth Damiani
“I have learned from my parents the importance of being
charitable and always helping those in need, particularly in the Jewish Community in Toronto and in Israel. My
Fund is my commitment to perform tikkun olam each year.”
Hannah Goodman
Kellie and Lauren are at J-SERVE 2013: the Jewish day of youth service as
volunteer participants representing B’nai Tzedek.
