THE WORD OF GOD THIS SUNDAY: For this Sunday,
the Thirty-second in Ordinary Time, the Scriptural readings begin with a passage from the First Book of Kings
where Elijah is provided nourishment by the mercy of
God. In the second reading, from the Letter to the Hebrews, Christ is described as the source of salvation for
those who await Him. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of
those who give of their want and not their excess.
RELIGIOUS CALENDARS:
As you leave church today, please feel free to pick up a
2016 Religious Calendar. Financial support enabling the
parish to provide the calendars is provided by Pawlowicz
Dentistry and McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home. We are
grateful for their generosity.
SYMPATHY: The sympathy of the parish is extended to parishioner, Bill Gruber. and his family,
at the death of his father, William Gruber. May
his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed
through the mercy of God rest in peace.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SOUP-TO-GO:
The Knights will be selling soup next weekend,
November 14th-15th. Wedding, Chicken Noodle and Stuffed Pepper will be available for sale
for $5.00 per quart. As always, your support of Knights of
Columbus Charities is greatly appreciated.
November 8, 2015
MEMORIAL CROSSES: Our custom at Saint Kilian is to
remember those for whom we have celebrated funerals
by means of a small wooden cross with the name of the
deceased (and the date of death) inscribed on it. These
crosses are placed on the back wall of the church in
Mars (until our new church is completed). Then on All
Souls Day (November 2nd) a special celebration of the
Eucharist takes place where all the names of the deceased are read and the crosses are given to their families as a lasting remembrance. We would like to extend
that custom beyond the funerals that take place here.
The deceased parent, sibling, or child of a Saint Kilian
parishioner who dies in the coming year is most welcome
to be remembered in this way. Please phone the Parish
Office is you would like a loved one remembered in this
way.
CARING QUILT MINISTRY: The Caring
Quilt Ministry’s regular work day is always
the 4th Saturday of the month! Due to
Thanksgiving, we will be working on the 21st
rather than the 28th. And please watch the
bulletin for December’s date. Thanks to all who continue
to help make this ministry a success. Quilts are always
available at the Parish Center. They are a great way to
give a message of comfort and love and not just for the
sick and dying but for anyone who needs a spiritual
boost!

"Extending a heartfelt THANK-YOU to Nancy & Matt Hoffman
and Janet & William Nethen. Their "haunted house tours"
raised $577, plus a substantial donation of non perishable
food Items, to benefit the Kilian
Cupboard Food Pantry. God
bless you and those who made
donations for helping feed our
neighbors in need! The Society
of St. Vincent de Paul.
In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us: “I want you to
observe that this poor widow contributed more
than all the others who donated to the treasury.
They gave from their surplus wealth, but she
gave from her want, all that she had to live on.”
Ask yourself “Am I only giving from my surplus
wealth?” and then put your gift in the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul poor box so that those who are suffering will be able to know God’s love and care. If you know
of a family in need, Please contact the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul by calling the parish office. God bless!

MUSIC MINISTRY: Our 1st Communion Song, You Are
All We Have, is very dear to my heart. I had the pleasure
of conducting this piece with a chorus of 155 young voices
at Music Ministry Alive. My association with that organization helped me make contact with some of the most prolific
and famous composers of our modern liturgical movement. Francis Patrick O’Brien is a well-known composer
and friend. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese
of Boston in 1985. Fran has spent all of his priesthood in
parish and campus ministry, where, along with his sacramental and parochial duties, he has frequently served as
music director and composer. He is currently pastor of St.
Matthias Parish in Marlborough, MA, a western suburb of
Boston.
Fran began working in music ministry at age thirteen as
accompanist for the children’s choir in his home parish. He
moved up the ranks from fill-in organist to music director
while still in high school. During those years, Fran began
composing for liturgy, taking inspiration from the works of
Alexander Peloquin, Lucien Deiss, Michael Joncas and
the St. Louis Jesuits. Fran later studied under Martin
Pearlman, founder of Boston Baroque; John Huggler,
composer in residence, Boston Symphony Orchestra; and
noted choral composer,
Julian Wachner.
Fran’s compositions for worship are born out of over 35
years of experience as accompanist, choir director and,
since 1985, presider. His compositions, beginning with
You Are All We Have and Shepherd of My Heart, in 1991,
are known for their strong melodies and solid texts.
Our choirs can be heard at the following masses:

SCHOOL CORNER
Art Class
School is in full swing here at Saint Kilian’s and in addition to attention to academics all grades are expanding their
artistic abilities! First grade just finished up working on a project based on Spookley the square pumpkin. Students
learned about watercolor resist when creating their sky scenes. In second grade we have
been studying leaves and the colors we see during the fall. Students discussed what colors the leaves begin to change to as well as the veins we see within leaves. Beautiful creations with attention to detail were produced. In third grade we have also been studying
the various types of leaves in western Pennsylvania while focusing on contour (or outside
lines) and simplistic design. Fourth grade has elaborated a step further in repeating the
contour lines (outside lines) and chose 3 leaves to create for their designs while limiting
colors. In 5th grade students are learning about pattern and monochromatic designs in
creating their pumpkins. 6th grade has been studying silhouette scenes and creating warm
vs cool colors using watercolors. Stunning outdoor images were created by sixth graders. In 7th grade students are
creating grid designs also using leaves and warm vs cool colors. We are discussing how warm colors typically visually appear on “top” while cool colors typically appear to be “behind.” 8th grade students are studying the difference
between actual texture and visual texture. 8th graders are using pattern to create visual texture in creating monochromatic pumpkins. All students have been working hard and discovering new aspects of art; their God given talents are shining through!
EMPLOYMENT-PART TIME NURSE NEEDED AT SAINT KILIAN PARISH SCHOOL:

REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY
Advent is the season in which we reread and
relive the experience of ancient Israel as it
longed for the coming of the Messiah. It is
also a time to reflect on the infancy narratives of Jesus which have enriched the lives
of believers through the centuries.
The Women’s Bible Study Group will begin an Advent
Study “A Commentary on the Infancy Narratives of
Jesus” ~ December 2nd-16th from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at
the Parish Hall in Mars. All are welcome! Books may be
purchased at the Parish Office for $16. For more information, call Chris Hespenheide at 724-316-1309.
DIVORCED/SEPARATED SUPPORT GROUP:
Whether you are divorced or separated a few months, a
few years or longer Saint Kilian Parish is offering Divorce
Care a Christian based program consisting of video segments and discussion. The sessions will deal with a variety of topics including: loneliness, anger, finances, new
relationships, children, etc. The group will meet weekly
from January 5th through March 22nd on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm in Conference Room B of
the Parish Center. To register or to find out more information, contact Deacon Ralph at 724-625-1665 x 2103 or
[email protected].
PITTSBURGH CATHOLIC NEWSPAPER: The Pittsburgh Catholic newspapers are on the counters outside of
the worship space where our bulletins and other aides are
displayed. Please help yourself to them. They are
mailed to your homes twice a year, in the fall and during
Lent. If you have not received them at your home, please
call the parish center and we will add you on the mailing
list.
VICTIM ASSISTANCE HOTLINE: The Diocese of Pittsburgh now requires that each parish publish the Diocesan
Victim Assistance Hotline telephone number in the parish
bulletin. The number is 1-888-808-1235. Please remember that we are all responsible for making our parish a
safe environment for children and youth.
