better. Aleigha has received honors for her art work throughout her
high school career. The full interview can be viewed on

showcased throughout this newsletter.
Thank You!
To all those individuals that supported the bell-ringers this past holiday
season in Clayton or Cape Vincent, we say thank you. We appreciate
your support in both the Christmas parades and local supermarkets. We
had an incredibly successful season in the Clayton-Cape Vincent area
and with your help we were able to collect over $2100 for needy families
in our community. A special thank you to all the volunteer bell-ringers
from the high school student body, MS Junior National Honor Society,
Cape Vincent Lions Club and Cape Elementary PTO.
We appreciate your generosity during the holiday season and hope that
you may be able to assist again next year. Thank you!

Working on college application essays.
College Access Grant
On Friday, December 4th, graduate assistants, Kathryn Kozak and Brianna
Schaar, from Syracuse University traveled to Thousand Islands High
School. They conducted one on one consultations with seniors throughout the day. Students were able to fine-tune their college application
essays. Ms. Kozak and Ms. Schaar were able to meet individually with 9
seniors throughout the day. This opportunity was made possible by the
College Access Challenge Grant through Syracuse University and Jefferson
Lewis BOCES.
Guidance
January regents and midterm exams are scheduled for the week of
uary 25, 2016. The schedule will be posted on our website:
www.1000islandsschools.org.
Jan-
For the past three months our
students (SADD, Student Council, Art Club, and many others)
have been trying to win our
school money in a teen safe
driving contest, the Join the
Shift contest
(www.jointheshift.org), sponsored by Erie Insurance. This
year, Thousand Islands High
School had two students receive individual prizes in the
contest, Michael Campany and
Shelby Brass. Thank you to all
of the students who participated and all the staff and parents
who supported our efforts!
We were not a top finisher this year but we
will continue to raise
funds so that we will be
able to provide Driver
Education scholarships,
educational programs
and the annual Lock-in!
Students will receive results of their PSAT scores via e-mail on January 7th.
Mrs. Nevala will also visit English 11 classrooms to help students interrupt their results from the new PSAT. Your son/daughter will receive information on how to access online college planning tools. The PSAT determines which academic skills are healthy and strong, and which skills
need to be learned or practiced for the SAT and ACT. The score report
gives helpful hints on how a student can improve and enhance those academic and test-taking skills. Juniors should plan on taking the SAT and the
ACT at least one time before the end of their junior year.
The second marking period concludes on January 29, 2016. Grades are
due to the Guidance office on Tuesday, February 2, 2016. Report cards
will be mailed home at the end of that week.

Positive Message
Sub Committee
The Positive Messages group
will be kicking off a "Get to
Know You" campaign in January. Peer Leaders will be
passing out treats to students who approach them
and ask questions about
Sources of Strength. This is
an informational campaign
aimed at informing and contributing a positive influence
into the student body and
school community as to the
Sources of Strength program.
Spirit Sub
Committee
The Sources of Strength
Spirit Committee is making
plans for Spirit Day on Friday, February 12th. There
will be a number of cooperative and fun activities scheduled to showcase school
spirit!
Social Media Sub
Committee
Sources of Strength
Team leaders and peer mentors continue to work on providing students and
faculty with support and encouragement! Members have received t-shirts and
are working in their sub committees. The “post-it” committee has been spreading messages of strength and caring throughout the school and community during the weeks leading up to the holidays!
Guest Speaker
On Friday, December 11th Robert Killmer, a 2011 TI graduate, presented to Mr. Putnam's Global 10 and AP World History classes at Thousand
Islands High School. Mr. Killmer recently graduated from Tel Aviv University in Israel with a Master’s degree in Security and Diplomacy. He
shared his experiences living and studying in Israel. He shared his pictures that he has taken during his time there including pictures of the
Wailing Wall, the wall along the Gaza strip and the demilitarized zone
along the Syrian border. He also showed the diverse geography of this
interesting country from the desert to the coast lands. Students had
many questions and were surprised to hear how comfortable and safe
Mr. Killmer felt living in Israel despite the external and terrorist
threats. He also shared many fun facts about Israeli pop culture (i.e.,
basketball is the national sport, the Dead Sea is so dense with salt that
people can float on the water, almost everyone speaks English). It was
a great opportunity to hear about the successes of one of our graduates
and hear a personal perspective about current world events.
The Sources of Strength Social Media group is working
on a commercial contest for
WWNY TV 7. The contest
focuses on how students
handle stress. The winning
group gets their commercial
on air.
Presentation Sub
Committee
The Sources of Strength
Presentation Committee is
working on a presentation
about getting through tough
times that will be presented
to HS Health classes in midJanuary.

ENGLISH
All English 11 students will be taking the New York State English Language Arts Regents exam in
January as their midterm exam. The exam is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, January 26th from
12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This will provide students with two opportunities to take the exam (they will
also take the exam in June as a final exam grade), hopefully decreasing stress during June testing and
allowing students to not only pass the exam before leaving 11th grade, but to have the opportunity to
potentially increase their score in June. For any questions, please contact Mrs. Varga at [email protected] or Mrs. Nevala at [email protected].
Senior Portfolio Information Night
There will be an informational meeting at 6:15 on January 13, 2016 in the library for ANY 9th -12th
grade families who are interested in learning more about the senior year Commencement Standard
Assessment (the Senior Portfolio). Topics will include: the Thousand Island Graduate Descriptors
and the CAS requirements and deadlines. Please email Mrs. Balk with any questions:
[email protected]
On Saturday January
30th, the HS Science

of topics including Anatomy & Physiology, Fossils,
Hydrology, Invasive Species and Dynamic Planet.

designing bridges, airplanes, time pieces, electric vehicles, windmills,
protein models, video
games and air powered
launchers. It is an exciting time for the HS Science Olympiad team.
