Mother Teresa (Page 8 - 9)
The Vatican is the headquarters of the Catholic Church. Mother Teresa had to get
permission from the pope to leave her order and help the poor.
Sister Teresa was confused. She wanted to help end
suffering. But she had promised the Sisters of Loreto that
she would become a teacher. She later said, “I knew
where I belonged, but I didn’t know how to get there.”
Sister Teresa asked for permission from the leaders of
her order to live in Calcutta and help the poor. The nuns
did not think this was a good idea. In order to leave
her order, Sister Teresa needed the permission of the
pope, the head of the Catholic Church.

Mother Teresa
became the head
of the Missionaries
of Charity.
Sister Teresa waited almost two years. Finally, the
pope gave her permission. Sister Teresa would become
the Reverent Mother Teresa. She would be the head of
her own order, or group, of nuns. They would be called
the “Missionaries of Charity.” They would be dedicated
to helping the poor.
