Engine Inlet Barrier Filtration
Systems for Pure Air in
Any Environment.
Why Aerometals?
More Effective Filtration
People often ask us why they need
the Aerometals when they already
have a particle separator.
The heart of the Aerometals system is
an active barrier media comprised of a
blended fabric, pleated between two
layers of epoxy coated wire cloth. The
media is used to suspend a specially
formulated oil which acts as a tacking
agent to trap and hold airborne
particles.
Quite plainly, separators do not
provide complete protection.
Although somewhat effective in
removing larger particles when
dust concentrations are relatively
low, standard separators have
shown marginal ability to filter
medium to small particles of
sand and dust.
Aerometals provides the engine
protection and extra margin of
safety demanded for Era’s AS350
operations. Prevent premature
compressor and turbine blade
erosion, decreased wear in oil path
and bearings,prevention of ash
compaction on turbine wheels and
resulting hot spots are just a few of the
benefits resulting from the Aerometals’
99.3% capture efficiency.
Increased aircraft deployment
coupled with dependable, economical
performance make possible the
demanding schedules required to get
the job done. The benefits were obvious,
and the decision was easily made. Era
Aviation has invested in the Aerometals for
all their AS350s’ because of its tremendous
effectiveness and value.
Air forced to enter a maze
of twisted baffles results in
restricted airflow and decreased
inlet pressure. Bleed air is used
continuously to drive particle
ejectors, which results in even
greater loss of power. Because
these fixed power losses result
in higher operating temperatures
and increased fuelconsumption,
shorter engine life and higher
operating costs result. Premature
engine component wear and
erosion adds an exponential
factor to these losses, and the
component wear/power loss cycle
feeds itself.
This cycle can be stopped by
ensuring that only the cleanest air
possible enters the engine.
Longer Engine Life, Higher
Performance & Exceptional
Cost Effectiveness
The Aerometals provides superior
engine protection in normal and
adverse operating environments,
reduced maintenance costs, and
greater installed performance than
typical turbine helicopter filter systems.
The washable element has an
efficiency laboratory tested at 99.3%
with SAE Coarse test dust. The
Aerometals has also demonstrated
the ability to remove the corrosive
salt nuclei present in coastal air
environments.

The barrier filter is insurance against
high engine maintenance and
operation costs. A policy in which the
premium is returned many times over.
When a particle separator is removed
and the Aerometals system is installed,
TOT is typically reduced
by 15-30° C.
Element Servicing
The elements are sealed to a
high temp cured composite duct
structure. This duct incorporates an
aerodynamically optimized transition
to the engine inlet. A low inlet pressure
warning switch, pilot selectable
alternate air door, and wiring harness
complete the system. All other
components are flight-proven, milspec hardware.
Yields 54X Life Extension
Operating Characteristics
In the event that blockage occurs,
the pilot is alerted via a low inlet
pressure annunciator light. He can
then bypass the filter by opening the
alternate air door.

ENGINE LIFE INCREASE FACTOR
Whether supporting off shore oil in the Gulf
of Mexico, transporting skiers to Idaho’s
famed powder fields, watching for back
country fires or flying search and rescue in
the Sierra Nevada, Era Aviation AS350s’
are always working. Customers depend
on Era Aviation for absolute reliability and
value. Eliminating FOD and engine erosion
is essential to reduced operational costs
and delays providing Era the ability to
exceed their customers’ expectations.
The elements are serviced at regular
intervals, typically 300 hours. A water
based emulsifier is sprayed into
element to break down the oil and
then rinsed with water, washing away
oil and dirt. The element is allowed to
dry, reoiled and returned to service.
Element replacement is typically at
4500 hours.

Technology Laboratory, Fort Eustis, Virginia
• Prevent premature compressor/
turbine blade erosion.
• Reduces corrosion due to ingestion
of airborne salt nuclei present in
coastal operations.
• Eliminates governor, bleed valve &
fuel nozzle contamination.
• Lower operating temperatures (TOT).
• Protects the labyrinth seals and
all components impacted by
cooling airflow.
• Prevents ash compaction on turbine
wheels and resulting hot spots.
• Prevents centrifugal coating of internal
shafts and resulting imbalance.
• Decreased wear in oil path and
bearings.
OVER 50 YEARS of field
experience has shown
performance degradation and
premature failure in turbine
engine components and
accessories are directly related
to filtration efficiencies. By
nature,rotorcraft operate
in low level “nap-of-theearth”altitudes (1,000 feet AGL
or less). Turbine helicopters
operating within this
environment are unavoidably
subjected to high levels
of erosive and corrosive
airborne particles. The
resultant costs of increased
maintenance and reduced
aircraft productivity can
be staggering. Aerometals
provides a proven solution.
The Aerometals provides
superior engine protection,
reduced maintenance
costs,and greater installed
performance.
Millions of flight hours in
many environments including
mining,agricultural, forestry,
law enforcement, military, air
medical have shown excellent
results. Inspection and overhaul
results show Aerometals systems
deliver a substantial reduction in
overhaul costs, hourly operating
costs and increased reliability.
