This
year 2007 marks
the 50 th a n n i ve r s a ry of
Me rdeka…. and also the
5 0 th a n n i ve r s a ry of the
founding of the Academy of
Medicine on 19 July 1957 in
Si n g a p o re. That Ac a d e m y
was the fore - runner of
our Academy of Medicine
of Malaysia. Thus in a
s e n s e, we should also
be celebrating the 50 th
anniversary of the Academy
this
ye a r.
Si n g a p o re
c e l e b rated
the
50 th
anniversary of the founding
of the Academy in a big way at the 41st Singapore-Malaysia
Co n g ress of Medicine on 19 Ju l y, the date of the first
meeting of 34 doctors who founded the Ac a d e m y.
The Academy of Medicine of Malaysia was formed on
22 December 1966 in Kuala Lumpur, but in a sense it was a
break away branch of the original Academy. Thus we should
also be celebrating our 50 th Anniversary.
more if not all specialists to join the Academy of Medicine.
We have amended the Constitution to make it easier for the
n a t i o n’s specialists to join, by doing away with the
requirement for publications. The Singapore Academy had
done this seven years ago, and has become much stronger
with more representation because of it.
We have had very good support from the government over
the past 50 years, perhaps because many of the specialists
were/are from the Ministry of Health or the Universities.
With their support, we managed to get the Joint Colleges
Land opposite the Hospital Kuala Lumpur, and the use of
the present Academy of Medicine House behind the
Parliament.
We have now started construction of the Academy Building
at the Joint Colleges Land, with funds raised from the Fund
Raising Dinner two years ago, and funds accumulated by
the Colleges of Physicians and Su rg e o n s, and the Academy
of Family Physicians of Malaysia, as a result of the
delineation of the land for the widening of the road at the
Jalan Pahang roundabout. However the funds available are
not enough… we are still short of RM2.0 million. May I
appeal to all of you to please donate, perhaps as a gesture of
celebrating our 50th anniversary, so that we can complete
the building by March next year the latest. Please give
generously, and encourage your friends to do the same.
If each of the 2000 members were to donate RM1000, we
should have enough. Your names will forever be on the walls
of the Academy Building.
The 7th Ministry of Health – Academy of Medicine Scientific
Meeting perhaps should be viewed as an occasion for us to
celebrate both the 50 th anniversary of Merdeka and our
Academy!
However, as in all landmarks of our lives, it is perhaps
a p p ro p riate for us to reminisce and look at our past
achievements and failures, and plan for a better 50 years.
What have we achieved and where do we go from here?
The Academy Of Medicine was founded with the objective
of determining, maintaining and improving the high quality
of specialist practice based on scientifically prove n
evidence based medicine, or commonly called we s t e rn
m e d i c i n e. We are now being challenged by altern a t i ve
medicines. The best way to prove to our patients that we are
practising good medicine is to ensure we practice evidence
based medicine. For this purpose, the Academy has worked
hard with the Ministry of Health to provide clinical practice
guidelines on various illnesses and medical conditions.
We sincerely hope that our members will try to follow these
guidelines and at the same time, be humane, have empathy
and practise good professional bedside manners. Please
uphold the good traditions of our medical practice.
We have been appointed as the custodian/managers of the
National Specialist Register by the Ministry of Health, whilst
waiting for the new Medical Act to be approved. We have
been given funds to get it started, and appointed
committees This is a very heavy responsibility, and I am
very happy to see the various specialist subcommittees are
working very diligently to determine the type, duration and
standards of training needed for our future specialists.
We still have a long way to go… we need to encourage more
if not all specialists to be registered with the National
Specialist Register. At the same time, we need to encourage
