WELCOME
NEWSLETTER
Europe & Middle East Division
January 2014
Here we are at the start of a new year and the
optimistic feeling that it is going to be a good one; I
sincerely hope it is – for all of us!
There are a few changes within the TEA to report,
first of all you have been used to seeing this page
headed up by Phil Hartley who has been president
of our division for the last three years. In addition to
being divisional president Phil single handedly
produced our divisional newsletter, but he has had
to relinquish that role due to current pressures from
his day job, so we have a lot to live up to. Phil has
done a great job and has left me, as new president,
with a significantly more buoyant division, having
nearly doubled the membership in our division
during his term.
I step into this role with my eyes wide open knowing all it entails and with some clear views
on what I wish to achieve during my stewardship. Top of my list is to grow the association in
Europe, as I firmly believe there are real benefits to membership and being part of a world
wide organisation that truly represents the best in the business. As an association we have to
give something back and provide real, tangible benefits to being a member. It is a simple
equation, more members = more benefits = more members.
It is a two way process, of course, and our board have to provide the right opportunities for
us all to learn, mix and do business together. Our division is arguably the most diverse,
compared to other divisions, covering more countries with active members; which actually
makes our job as a board harder. To address this, we have developed a programme for the
year ahead that already covers six countries and we hope to add to the list.

It is understood that for members to attend events there is a cost, not just in time but travel
and all that goes with it. Therefore, we are determined to offer events that make all this
worthwhile. We also want to share the quality of the annual SATE (Storytelling, Architecture,
Technology, Experience) conference with all our members, including students in our
industry who join the NextGen initiative.
A programme of one-day events has been developed that we are calling SATE Academy
days. The format will be a morning of presentations on one of the four SATE themes at a
host venue, followed by a behind scenes tour in the afternoon and in true TEA style an
evening mixer. You will see the diary as it currently stands further on in this newsletter!
We hope by announcing these dates well in advance that it will be easier to incorporate
them into your plans.
Of course we are more than happy to receive any sponsorship offers and suggestions for
future SATE Academy days!

SATE ACADEMY DAYS
NEWSLETTER
Europe & Middle East Division
January 2014
Our SATE (Storytelling, Architecture,
Technology, Experience) conference is a two
day event with half a day devoted to each topic,
which now moves around the three
international divisions, and hence comes to
Europe now once every three years. The quality
of last year’s conference at SCAD (Savannah
College of Art and Design) was exceptional.
Those of us present from Europe felt that it was
a shame that not all our members could have
access to this level and quality of conference. It
has yet to be decided, between this year and
next, as to when SATE will next come to our
division. We feel this is too long to wait, but
equally it is simply not possible to stage a SATE
conference in each of the international
divisions. Based on a very successful European
event at Port Aventura in June last year, we are
using that format for a series of one day events.
The format will vary, of course, from venue to
venue, but the guideline plan is that we have up
to six presentations in the morning of around
20 minutes each, with breaks, followed by lunch
and a behind scenes tour in the afternoon and
ending the day with a mixer.

As you will see from the diary below we can announce three of the venues and all six
countries for our first six events. Our standard flyer will be issued to publicise each event, but
booking early is advised as some will have limited numbers. There will not be a conference
fee for members, although there will be some venue charges that we will pass on at cost.
There will be a charge for non-members, refundable against membership fees for joining
within a month of attending a SATE Academy Day.

EXPERIENCE
Don’t forget, TEA events are not just limited to the people that receive all the TEA
information within your company; they are open to all members of staff within your
company young or old! Some events could prove very beneficial to younger members of the
team as part of the general learning process of what makes this industry tick!
We are making a considerable effort to ensure that these events are worthwhile in every
respect. They are a major benefit to being a member as during the year we are going to be
hearing from top people in the industry from all over the world. Our hosts should not be
forgotten either, as they are opening their doors and often giving up their own time to take
part in our event. We hope by moving around the division all our members will have the
opportunity to attend at least one event.

IAAPA
A NEWCOMERS GUIDE
BY JONATHAN BONNER
NEWSLETTER
Europe & Middle East Division
January 2014
As a general newcomer to the themed
entertainment industry I was especially looking
forward to my first IAAPA show this year. On the
first day we tasked ourselves with walking as
much of the show as we could, aisle for aisle. I
was shocked to learn upon my return to the UK
that it was the equivalent of 9 miles. Note to
self: next year bring roller blades. Some of my
highlights from the show floor:
1) The Garner Holt Stand boasted a fully
Animatronic man on Unicycle moving back and
forth. Just how did they do that?
2) The Zero Shock jumping platform was a big
draw for crowds. Seeing one of my director’s
leap off, climb off the bag, dust himself off and
casually say "that's great" was an impressive
sight (especially seeing as this was something I
didn't dare do myself ).
3) I also felt it would have been rude not to ride
Zamperla's spinning flat ride that they had set
up. I went on feeling very brave, and came off
feeling like I’d been sat in a tumble dryer. A
great addition to the show.
4) The TEA stand was a perfect central hub for
meetings or just a coffee and a chat. Every time I
walked past, there were different faces chatting
away.

NEXTGEN
CLARA RICE - CHAIR
NEXTGEN COMMITTEE
NEWSLETTER
Europe & Middle East Division
January 2014
NextGen is not new! For the past two years, the TEA NextGen Committee has strived to
connect students, faculty and recent graduates to the TEA's industry, organization and
members, supporting and fostering the next generation of TEA members and themed
entertainment professionals. The effort starts with the colleges and universities - not just
those specialising in design or technology, but those that touch every aspect of what we do.
Beginning with current TEA President Christine Kerr, and continuing with past NextGen Chair
Kile Ozier, TEA's NextGen Committee has gathered serious momentum since its inception,
and (TEA Blog Link) it shows no signs of slowing down in 2014. TEA has forged strong
relationships with Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and Carnegie Mellon
University's Entertainment Technology Center (ETC), and plans are currently in the works for
a major event involving 4 New York-area schools on the campus of Columbia University this
Spring. But the TEA NextGen movement is not limited to US boundaries - it is a truly global
initiative, as far reaching as the TEA's membership and the EME Board has several NextGen
events planned across our region this year (stay tuned for details).
Given the committee's global reach and aspirations, there are many roles for EME members to play:
1) If you have not yet completed the TEA Internship Exchange Survey, please fill it out here.
2) The committee is looking for speakers from all over the world to participate both on
in-person panels/portfolio reviews and in online webinars. If you are interested in joining
the TEA NextGen Speakers Bureau and in sharing your knowledge and experience with the
next generation, please email Clara Rice, current NextGen Chair, at [email protected].
It is up to us to ensure that when we take on new staff, they are better equipped to hit the
ground running and can provide value to our companies from Day One. By providing
education, support and encouragement, we can help the sub 25's find their way in this
challenging industry. Only by engaging with the educational systems and institutions in all
active countries can we hope to have an influence, so I hope you will join me and others in
supporting the efforts and initiatives of the TEA NextGen Committee.

DO YOU NEED OUR HELP IN THESE DIFFICULT TIMES?
CAN’T SEE THE WOOD FOR THE TREES?
There is a TEA support service for those members who are finding times difficult. This is not a
legal or financial service but more an opportunity to talk, get advice and benefit from the
experience of others who may have been in a similar situation. Obviously, this would be
totally confidential service.

We can’t let Phil sign off without a word on his great passion at IAAPA – the golf! The annual
TEA Cup took place at Pirate Cove golf course, Phil complete with themed T-shirt.
If you have followed this very serious competition over the last four years, you will know that
in 2012 Phil was the victor, however, the ladies regained the honours for 2013 and the
“honour” was taken by Julie Wickman of 7six7 AV Consultants. (Julie is the blonde lady at the
centre of the picture). This was a truly international competition with the following countries
represented; Germany, Netherlands, Spain, UK and US and the mix of companies; AV,
Construction, Design, Park owner/operator, Theming, Water Features and Special Effects.
We figure that for the chaps to stand a chance of winning, maybe we should start
before going to the bar…
