The cover of this year’s Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors features
a few of the many students and professors who have benefited directly
from scholarships and professorships made possible by donors like you.
The promise of our students and the excellence of our faculty are enhanced immeasurably by
every gift received by the UCF Foundation. We offer our sincere thanks for your support and
involvement, which have literally changed thousands of lives for the better.
Your gifts for scholarships, professorships, programs and unrestricted purposes have created
a highly attractive educational experience for students and helped to make the University
of Central Florida one of the 10 largest universities in the nation. Student demand for a place
at UCF has never been stronger. Not only was our fall 2004 enrollment a record, but our
incoming freshman class had the highest SAT scores and high school grade point averages
in the university’s history. Since we graduated our first class in 1970, your support has helped
UCF to award more than 140,000 degrees, including over 25,000 graduate degrees in master’s
and doctoral programs. In the 40 years of its existence UCF has moved from promise to
prominence and truly come of age.
On our cover are some of the people whose study and teaching are enhanced by
the generosity of donors, and inside are stories about gifts that have raised the level of
educational excellence at the university. In addition, all donors with gifts of $100 or more are
recognized in the honor roll section. You will also find the UCF Foundation’s financial results.
Our endowment exceeded $70 million at the end of fiscal year 2004, bolstered by a 17.3%
investment return that recovered much of the decline that occurred in fiscal years 2001 and
2002. The contribution of new endowment gifts totaling more than $9 million made last year
a stellar one for the Foundation.
We hope that you find this information interesting and inspiring. With deep gratitude to
you, we move forward together to enhance UCF’s standing as an institution of the highest
academic quality and, in turn, to make the world a better place.

HOME SWEET HOME
Renderings of the FAIRWINDS Alumni Center, now under construction
More than 125,000 people have
graduated from UCF, and soon they will
have a building on campus to call their
own: the FAIRWINDS Alumni Center. The
center will be a place where alumni and
friends can always feel at home on an
ever-changing UCF campus.
“The building will give alumni a way to
stay connected to their alma mater,”
said Mike Manglardi ’84, chairman of the
alumni center building campaign. “You’re
a student for a few years, but you’re an
alumnus for the rest of your life.”
Non-academic buildings do not receive
state funding, so Manglardi and his
committee took up the challenge to raise
the funds privately. FAIRWINDS Credit Union
gave the naming gift, and members of
the UCF Foundation Board of Directors
spearheaded the drive to name the John
and Martha Hitt Library after UCF’s reigning
fi rst family.
Naming the building’s lobby in memory of
Pete Fisher and Jimmy Ferrell touched the
hearts of former Academic Peer Advisors
and Orientation Team members, and
alumni came forward with enthusiasm,
including Linda ’86 and Keith ‘86 Flannery.
“Pete and Jimmy were those teachers
from whom you learned so much, yet they
never actually gave you a grade,” said
Linda. “The programs they ran focused on
teamwork, team building, self-awareness
and helping others, and the programs
worked so well because of these two men.”
Other donations at all levels paved the
way for a ballroom, conference rooms,
individual offi ces and more, including an
endowment to help fund center operations
and an ongoing brick paver program.
When the FAIRWINDS Alumni Center opens
in fall 2005, it will showcase what can
happen when people band together to
make a dream become a reality.

UCF DONOR HIGHLIGHTS 20 03 —20 04
A LEGACY OF CARING
Vivian Woods and Muffin
Vivian Woods always did her part to make the world
a better place. She and her beloved dog, Muffin,
were involved in programs in which interaction with
animals lifted the spirits of those in hospitals and
nursing homes. Because she often was in health
care facilities, Woods knew firsthand how good care
enhanced the well-being of patients. With that in
mind, several years ago she established the Barry
and Vivian Woods Endowed Scholarship in UCF’s
College of Health and Public Affairs to assist students
in the School of Nursing. The scholarship was in
memory of her late husband, Barry. Woods was so
dedicated to her work with patients in need that
when she was to be recognized for her gift, she did
not attend the event because she and Muffin were
scheduled to work with a patient in a local hospital
that evening.
Vivian Woods died in 2002, and her desire to help
those in need of excellent medical care lived on
through her estate. A trust established in her will
added more than $100,000 this past year to the
Barry and Vivian Woods Endowed Scholarship
Fund. That gift will be enhanced by State of Florida
matching funds so that many deserving nursing
students will be able to join the health care field.
Through the endowed scholarship she built both
during her lifetime and through her estate, Vivian
Woods leaves a legacy of caring that will touch the
lives of nurses and patients on a permanent basis.
More UCF nursing students will be able to study in labs
like this one thanks to Vivian Woods’ generosity.
BUILDING SUCCESS
The Engineering III Building is slated to open in fall 2005.
Welbro Building Corporation has been in
Central Florida for 25 years. Although branded
with a hospitality edge, Steve Davis, president
of Welbro, pointed out, “we are a strong
contender in the education and commercial
market.” This is apparent by their long-time
support of UCF. They have also provided
extensive construction management for the
College of Engineering Building II and the
Rosen College of Hospitality Management,
as well as other campus buildings.
The College of Engineering and Computer Science received a generous commitment from Welbro to support the
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s Construction Management Program. Welbro’s commitment
will be the catalyst toward the creation of an endowment for the Construction Engineering Program.
This commitment is a reflection of the value Welbro places on building relationships and giving back to the
community. “You are only as good as what you do today,” said Davis as he discussed the importance of giving
back to the community. “It is the cornerstone of our business.”

MAKING MAGIC
When it comes to receiving the best education in sport business management,
UCF students already have an edge – they’re part of the world-class DeVos
Sport Business Management Program, a graduate program in the College of
Business Administration.
That edge grew even sharper when The Bob and Cheri Vander Weide
Foundation and the Orlando Magic established an endowed scholarship
fund. Because it often takes years for an endowment to be fully funded and
produce enough interest to provide scholarships, the Vander Weides and the
Magic also made a cash gift so scholarships could be awarded immediately.
Their generosity provides a tremendous opportunity for students to succeed
and make a positive difference in the business of sport management.
“My goal as the DeVos Chair is to have all our students receive scholarship
support,” said Richard Lapchick, chair of the DeVos Sport Business Management Program. “I shared this with Bob
Vander Weide, president and CEO of the Orlando Magic, who immediately started the process that eventually led to
the innovative scholarship that combines endowment with current support. The entire DeVos family is committed to
our students and this scholarship is yet another example of that commitment. All of us are so grateful to the family for
their deep friendship and spiritual support in addition to their amazing financial generosity.”
READY TO READ
Knowing how to read is a basic necessity.
No two children are alike, however, and
some have great difficulty mastering
the written word in a regular classroom,
despite parental involvement.
Philanthropists John and Carrie
Morgridge took an interest in early
childhood literacy when their two
children were young. They found it a
Carrie and John Morgridge
natural fit, since John’s mother and
grandmother both were teachers. They’ve supported literacy in public
education as well as private schools, and brought their enthusiasm for the
subject to Central Florida when they moved from Colorado in 2002.
The Morgridges were impressed with UCF College of Education Dean Sandra
Robinson, the college’s programs and with FLaRE (Florida Literacy and
Reading Excellence project), a statewide program housed at the university.
“Robinson has phenomenal vision,” Carrie said. “The best practices at UCF
get me excited about teaching and education because they understand the
whole child and the whole process. It isn’t just one program for one child; it’s
many things together.”
The Morgridges have supported the college and FLaRE very generously over
the past year, and they are proud to be helping the university that trains
22 percent of the state’s teachers.
“Under the leadership of John Hitt and guidance of Dean Robinson, I see a
long relationship with UCF,” Carrie said. “We want to see our money spent
wisely, and UCF does a great job of maximizing every penny.”

WORLD-CLASS HOSPITALITY
In the heart of the world’s most famous tourist destination,
UCF students at the Rosen College of Hospitality Management
are preparing to become leaders in the hospitality industry.
They’re creating culinary delights, learning hotel management,
exploring the world of travel, honing their theme park skills and
planning conventions and golf tournaments at one of the most
comprehensive colleges of its kind.

Industry giants such as Walt Disney World, Darden Restaurants, Universal Studios, Marriott, SeaWorld
and the Central Florida Hotel and Lodging Association have demonstrated their belief in the college
by establishing Academic Excellence Funds.
“These companies see the value of increasing the quality and visibility of our program,” said Abe Pizam,
dean of the college. “In the future, many of our students will be their employees, so their investment
now will benefit them later.”
Academic Excellence Funds enable the college to excel beyond what state money alone provides.
For instance, they provide student scholarships, finance library purchases and lab equipment, and
allow faculty to travel to conferences. The funds are flexible enough to support current needs as well
as future needs when they arise.
“We believe the Rosen School can become the crown jewel of
hospitality education,” said Joe Lee, CEO of Darden Restaurants.
“Training new generations of industry leaders in the number
one hospitality destination in the world is a perfect marriage
of resources.”
With support from industry leaders like Lee, Pizam envisions great
success. “We’re already the second largest hospitality management
college in the United States,” he said, “and we intend to be the best.”

SETTING THE STAGE
Upon seeing Harriett and Hy Lake at a community event, one might
ask “who is that handsome couple?” Harriett has taken fashion
seriously since she was 6 years old during the Depression, when
she got her first sewing machine. By the time she went to teacher’s
college in Pennsylvania, she had an extensive wardrobe.
Costumes set the stage
in the UCF Conservatory
Theatre’s production of the
drama Three Sisters in 2004.
A fashion designer, actress and comic at heart, Harriet has traveled
the world with her daughter, Shelley, and served in the Marine
Corps in World War II. Not the least of her accomplishments is her
philanthropy, which she has bestowed on many of Orlando’s educational, arts and other organizations.
Most recently Harriett pledged $500,000 to the College of Arts and Sciences
for the UCF Arts II building, which will be the first major upgrade in campus
performance space for UCF theater and music in more than 25 years. This gift
will be eligible for a state match and through this $1-million gift Harriett and Hy
Lake will name the Costume Design Program Area of the Theater Department
in Arts II. In addition, Harriet has donated her fabulous wardrobe for UCF
Conservatory Theater productions. Costumes make a play come to life, much
like Harriett has enlivened Central Florida events with her spirit and enthusiasm.

GETTING IN PRACTICE
Harry deAntonio ‘84 loved playing football for UCF. Despite sharing locker rooms
with the baseball team and taking long bus rides to reach opposing team fields, the
experience is one he’d never trade.
Today deAntonio is president of Icon Commercial Interests, L.L.C. in Atlanta, where
he specializes in structuring and negotiating commercial real estate leases for
corporate America. When he found himself doing a lot of work in Florida, his thoughts
naturally turned to his alma mater and his friend and former roommate, Alan Gooch
’84, executive director of the Golden Knights Club. After a campus visit, deAnonio
decided to show his support for the football program by donating $1 million for the
specialized practice field inside the new Anthony and Sonja Nicholson Field House.
Thanks to his gift, players won’t have to practice in substandard conditions or cancel
practices due to lightning storms.
Alan Gooch ’84 and Harry deAntonio ’84 reminisce
about their days playing football for UCF.
“My dedication to the school dates back to seeing a struggling football program
come into the spotlight,” deAntonio said. “UCF has run under the radar screen
for such a long time. Elevating athletics really helps academics more than
people understand.”
13 YEARS OF LOYALTY
Dr. Carmelo Licitra ‘77 was 11 years old when he arrived
in the United States from Italy. While serving in the
Navy in 1973, he moved to Orlando and attended UCF,
where he majored in microbiology. He graduated from
medical school in 1982, underwent training in internal
medicine and then specialized in infectious diseases at
Emory University.
College of Health and Public Affairs Building I
Since then, Licitra has practiced infectious diseases and travel medicine in Orlando. For the last few years, he has been included
as one of Orlando Magazine’s “Best Doctors.” “I know that a big factor for my success was the nurturing environment at UCF,” he
said. “I often think about UCF as I am reminded of how fortunate I am to be practicing my profession.”
Last year marked Licitra’s 13th consecutive year of giving to the university and the microbiology program. “I encourage alumni
to help UCF both financially and by being active in their area of interest,” he said. “UCF has provided opportunities to many of us,
and it is a way to offer back the opportunity to others. It will also help our academic and medical community.”
