We come together to be with those we care about

For all New Zealanders
trust
objectives
The purpose of the Mika Haka Foundation Charitable
Trust is to support and encourage, in various ways,
the development and discussion of, and public
interaction with, different aspects of native cultures.
Our work is designed for the benefit of the native
cultures and the wider community. We address
various issues of benefit to native cultures and the
wider community. In promoting this general purpose
the Trust will, without limitation, also:
•
provide support to native cultures by working on projects
that aim to bring about social change that is beneficial to
themselves and the wider community;
•
support, record and promote the dissemination of new
thought on ‘What does native culture mean to New Zealand?’
and related issues;
•
support, record and promote the Takataapui cultural history
of Aotearoa and encourage dissemination of this information
and knowledge to the wider community; support, record and
promote the ongoing development of all art forms from the
perspective of native cultures so that it benefits such native
cultures and the wider community;
•
support and promote events, activities, projects and
discussion amongst the youth that is aimed at promoting
native cultures and geared to working in unity for the benefit
of the native cultures and the wider community; and
•
support and promote, amongst native cultures and the wider
community, a commitment to embrace non-smoking, antiviolence, healthy living and positive life choices.

Kā kids about healthy lifestyles
Mika works with crazy kids,
outcasts, rebels, those who don’t
fit and those who dream. Seeing
differently is a gift…
All great things come from the
ability to think freely, without
restraint. These young people
evolve and improve things.
The crazy OTT kids are the ones
I see as genius. Help us help
them make great things and live
healthy, fulfilled lives.

Mika, as principal sponsor, has donated over $80,000 in cash as well as
providing the Foundation six figure infrastructure support.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S
REPORT
2013 marks our 5 year vision plans successful completion.
The world is now a global playground. We talk and
post daily to anywhere on the planet that has internet. Our
young people communicate with like minds, as well as local
communities. We act local and are Global. MHF is engaging with
other successful Global Foundations and charities to support
our success in NZ. We are working with like minded, holistic,
sustainable arts, health and entertainment projects that lead
New Zealanders forward.
The Foundation’s core Kā health and well-being initiative
has grown to the point where we will be engaging extra staff
and tutors to keep up with the demand. Jay Tewake, who heads
the Kā Programme, is now well-established, combating New
Zealand’s worsening obesity and diabetes statistics by providing
free classes that encourage rangatahi to take charge of their own
bodies, get up and go!
Our high potential MHF TOI Emerging Leaders
Programme was successful on “NZ’s Got Talent,” London Fashion
Week, University graduations, business start-ups, global projects
in dance and much more. It’s almost impossible to keep up with
our program, which remains non-affiliated to any one tertiary
provider. Instead, MHF remains close to the students of these
institutions’ fostering their success.
Salon Mika launched the first ever ELP Producer’s program
within MHF. Here several young producers were mentored in
producing a professional stage show. Salon Mika
went on to win rave reviews and two awards.

WHAKAPAPA
KAUPAPA
MĀTĀPONO
The Mika Haka Foundation (MHF) is
a charitable trust formed to deliver
the inclusive vision of successful Māori
artist and entertainer, Mika, of an
extraordinary future for all young New
Zealanders – in particular, young people
from diverse backgrounds and minority
communities.
The Foundation was formed in 2008 to
consolidate and expand programmes
that Mika established through the
pioneering work of the Torotoro Trust
between 2001 and 2008. MHF continues
to develop these performance and
physical activity based programmes to
benefit greater numbers of young New
Zealanders.
The Mika Haka Foundation invites
people of diverse ethnicities, cultures,
sexualities and religions, living in
Aotearoa/New
Zealand,
to
find
pathways towards better health and
education
opportunities
through
physical culture and the performing arts.
We aim to provide young people with
direction and create an understanding
of self-discipline and boundaries. Māori
refer to this as Tikanga. This direction
helps to empower young people to set
goals and take responsibility for their
own lives. We promote healthy living
and always aim to lead by example.
We want to provide an environment of
inspiration, encouraging dreams and
the idea that nothing is impossible – to
push yourself to new heights, to have no
fear of failure and to be in a constant
state of learning.
Our work is guided by five Māori
principles:
WHAKATAKANGA
The Mika Haka Foundation exists to
ignite young minds and transform
bodies towards better lives through the
performing arts and physical culture.
Kotahitanga mā re Rerekētanga
Unity through Difference
Whanaungatanga:
We are collaborative in nature and
believe that we are stronger together.
Mana Tangata:
We take pride in ourselves, our work
and our community. We believe that
education and employment, combined
with cultural, creative and physical
wellbeing, will bring personal success.
Wehi:
We want to ignite the minds of young
people, encouraging them in their
passions.
Tapu Takitahi:
We believe in the sacred nature of the
self. Being a leader to yourself first will
allow you to lead others.
Manākitanga:
We work together, care for one another,
and respect each other.

able to take advantage of this fabulous
“Truly a highlight of our P.E program at
the college.”

to each class were motivational and
inspiring. You engaged each student with
the mindset ‘to give it a go ‘so they felt
part of the session no matter what dance/
fitness background they were at.”
“As the session progressed into each
routine you gave the students options
or levels of intensity which they could
choose to work at, at their own level for
safety- AWESOME!”
“On fitness sessions-you knew when to
plug into high intensive 4 group sessions
-at the end of each sessions for optimum
fitness of the entire group!”

LETTER FROM
YOUNG PERSON
“I was born a boy, really shy, and I never
spoke out or told the truth until I was
22. I changed into being the woman
I am today because of YOU and Lady
Gaga. You gave me the strength to
keep stepping forwards, being open,
honest and straight up! It’s been three
years with the love of my life now. I’m
so happy, I honestly would never have
thought finding a man who loves me for
me would ever happen. Now at 25, I have
my head on a dream that I’m chasing
and a home that I can call my own. Thank
you! Can I expect to see more of your TV
shows hehe? I would so be keen to help
produce or do makeup, anything to give
back to you what you gave me.”

GLOBAL
VIEW
Māori innovation on a global scale. A young person
connecting with another like mind internationally can
open the door to a world of opportunities. We believe
that all people benefit from interacting with Māori and
NZ culture. To this end MHF continues to work with
Brand leaders to promote NZ using Māori culture:
events included: Welcoming Prince Charles to NZ, invites
to London Olympics Festival, China Shanghai Expo,
Edinburgh Festival to name a few.
