Tastes and Treasures of Southern Tastes and
Slight Indulgence presents Tastes & Treasures
of Southern Italy featuring:
The Amalfi Coast, Calabria &Sicily
June 19 – 30, 2013
Hosted by JC & Suzy Warman
Suzy and I are extremely excited to be planning our third international Slight Indulgence wine trip to such a beautiful,
dramatic and culturally rich part of Italy. This will be our second trip to Italy and after experiencing the North in 2010, we
are certainly looking forward to our next “indulgence” in Southern Italy & Sicily, especially in the company of such great
friends. Calabria is special to us because it is the birthplace of so many of our ancestors. Our visit to San Giovanni in Fiore
will provide insight to our own heritage, customs and culture and that should be amazing! This is also an area of Italy that is
less traveled and that just adds to its appeal as a hidden gem! We begin our journey by traveling to fashionable and
glamorous Sorrento, Capri, Positano & the Amalfi coast where we will enjoy the sights, culinary delights and, of course, the
local wines. Afterwards, we continue to Calabria for a “little bit of West Virginia” in this culturally and gastronomically rich
area and will enjoy wine tasting along the way. Next, we are off to Sicily to visit 2 distinct areas of the island and experience
their wine Renaissance. Wine has been produced in Sicily for 4,000 years! We are also so pleased that Giuseppe Tarzia,
whose family is from Calabria, will again travel with us as tour director throughout our journey. Please join us next
summer for our 2013 Slight Indulgence adventure: “Tastes & Treasures of Southern Italy and Sicily”! ~~~JC & Suzy

Day 1 Wed. June. 19 Depart USA: Evening departure from Pittsburgh with connecting flights to Naples, Italy.
Meals and refreshments served on board.
Day 2 Thu June 20: Arrive Naples – Buongiorno and welcome to
Italy. After passport control and claiming our luggage, we will be met
by our Tour Director and proceed by private motorcoach transfer to our
hotel in Sorrento. En route we visit the slopes of the Mt Vesuvius
volcano. We are planning a stop in Pompeii to discover the art, history,
folklore and archaeology and visit the ruins of the ancient city. Pompeii
was rediscovered approx 1700 years after it was covered by ashes
during the eruption of Vesuvius in the year 79 AD. Afterwards we
continue our drive along the spectacular coast road to beautiful
Sorrento. Perched high on cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples and
Capri, Sorrento will be our home for the next 3 nights. The balance of
the day is at leisure. Tonight we experience a special welcome dinner at
a local Neapolitan restaurant. Overnight: Sorrento (D)
Day 3 Fri June 21: Capri - This morning we visit the world renowned Isle of Capri. We board a hydrofoil that will
take us to the main harbor of Capri. We will take the famous “funicolare” to the upper town for a walking tour. Here
we will visit the Augustus Gardens overlooking the Faraglioni. Enjoy the high end shopping district and narrow
alleyways overlooking the Mediterranean sea…beautiful! (weather permitting the blue grotto or island cruise can be
arranged through your tour director) Return to Sorrento later this afternoon with leisure time to explore on your
own. Tonight enjoy dinner together at a local restaurant. Overnight: Sorrento (B,D)
Day 4 Sat. June 22: Positano/Revello/Sorento- Today, the spectacular Amalfi coast
awaits. Our first stop is world-famous Positano with its winding alleyways, shops and clifftop
vistas. We continue to nearby Amalfi where we will visit the city center and admire the
mosaics decorating the facade of St. Andrews Basilica. Lunch today, will be in the
picturesque village of Ravello overlooking the Amalfi coast that inspired Wagner’s
Opera “Parsifal”. You will want to have your camera ready for shots of some of the
most spectacular scenery today! Late this afternoon, we return to Sorrento where our
tour director will assist with a selection of typical restaurants. Overnight: Sorrento (B,L)
Day 5 Mon June 23: Paestum-Calabria This morning we depart Sorrento and head
south toward Calabria. We stop en route at the significant archeology site of Paestum.
Here, we experience a unique “fresh mozzarella cheese farm” where we follow the entire
production. Mozzarella from Paestum is considered the best in the world and we shall
have an opportunity to test first-hand! We journey south along the rest of the Italian
Peninsula, enjoy the scenic drive and landscape changes through the regions of Southern Italy stopping again for a
local winery tasting in the Campania Region. In late afternoon we arrive in Calabria for check-in at our hotel in San
Giovanni in Fiore. A Welcome cocktail will be served followed by dinner. Overnight: San Giovanni in Fiore (B,D)
Day 6 Tue June 24: San Giovanni in Fiore – This is a most special day in San Giovanni with the celebration of their
Patron Saint’s day, Saint John. San Giovanni in Fiore is among the most prosperous and famous villages of the Sila
Mountains. Emigration from this village bought entire families and coal mine workers to WV. This morning will see
remembrances such as the Miners Memorial commemorating the 1907 mining disaster in Monongah as well as the
West-Virginia Calabria House. Visit the present day Abbey built by founder Joachim of Fiore in 1188. There will be
time visit the city center, town hall, relatives and research family genealogy. Today enjoy lunch at a local Trattoria.
We are sure you will recognize much of the cuisine served here! For those interested this afternoon, a wine tasting or
Ciro wine valley visit will be arranged. Evening at leisure. Overnight: San Giovanni in Fiore (B,L)
Day 7 Wed June 25: Calabria –Taormina – Today, say good-bye and depart San Giovanni in Fiore. We will drive
along the eastern coast of Calabria en route to Sicily. We will stop to enjoy an exclusive hosted lunch at a
Calabrese family’s home. (Could this be Giuseppe’s Mom’s lunch?) This afternoon our journey continues to explore
the very southern point of the Italian Peninsula, Reggio Calabria. Afterwards, we board the ferry to cross from the
straits of Messina to reach Taormina, Sicily. Late afternoon, check into our hotel. Overnight: Taormina (B/L)
Day 8 Thu June 26: Taormina – Taormina is a wonderful town and our hotel offers a great view of Mount Etna.
Our morning walking tour of Taormina’s charming city center includes the Greek/Roman amphitheater, with its
spectacular view of Giardini Naxos and Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe. Our culinary experience
today will start with visiting and shopping at local market then followed by a “Typical Sicilian cooking class session”
We will enjoy our lunch which we cooked and shared together as well as the local wine. Balance of the day is yours to
relax or choose to visit the nearby villages that were used for most scenes of the famous movie “The Godfather”. The
town of Taormina has so much to offer and we will be sure to enjoy our evening on our own in this Sicilian town.
Overnight: Taormina (B, L)
Day 9 Fri June 27: Taormina - Wine, honey and volcanic eruptions! This morning we will explore the slopes of
Mt. Etna with a visit and touring of local wineries. Our day will also include an interesting honey-tasting session in
Zafferana. We then continue climbing to 6,000 feet, where we enjoy the best views overlooking Taormina and the
valley. Our drive takes us through the fertile slopes and villages that sit on ancient volcanic eruptions. Tonight
dinner will be included at a local restaurant in Taormina. Overnight Taormina (B,D)
Day 10 Sat June 28: Taormina / Agrigento/Wine tasting/ Palermo - Today we depart for Palermo. This
morning, explore with our on site guide, the ancient Greek city Akragas, a hillside town famous for its magnificent
Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy a guided tour of the valley, dating back to the 5th
century B.C. After the Valley of the Temples, we travel to Palermo, the capital of Sicily, with an orientation tour of
the city. Arrive late afternoon at your hotel in time for an enjoyable and relaxing dinner. Overnight: Palermo (B,D)
Day 11 Sun June 29: Palermo – We journey south to the western corner of Sicily dominating the Mediterranean.
Our first stop will be near the sea town of Marsala where we will visit famous Sicilian wineries such as Cantine Florio
& Donnafugata. We will visit their wine cellars to enjoy a special Marsala and also taste premium and traditional
Sicilian award-winning reds & whites. In the afternoon we will return to Palermo. Tonight enjoy our farewell dinner
at a local gourmet restaurant while enjoying great wine, stories and good friends! Overnight: Palermo (B,D)
Day 12 Thu June 30: Palermo - USA - Morning transfer to Palermo Airport for our return flights home. Same day
