PREFECTS
We are pleased to announce that nearly 50 of our Year 10 students attended a prefect training day
recently and they will commence their new responsibilities this week.
We want to say a big thank you and goodbye to our current Year 11 prefects. They have proven
themselves to be one of the most committed and effective team of prefects we have ever had. It has
been a joy to see how much they have grown both in confidence and in their leadership skills. As a
school we are appreciative and grateful for the valuable work they have undertaken over the last
twelve months and wish them every success in their forthcoming exams and future career plans.
We are very proud of all these students who are ambassadors for the school. They voluntarily give a
significant amount of their own time to support staff and fellow students in helping make Meols Cop
a happier and safer place for everyone.

WELL DONE MEGAN!
Megan Knight (9BD) very bravely decided to
have her long hair cut short last week in order to
donate it to the Little
Princess Trust.
This is a children’s cancer
charity who supply real hair
wigs to children suffering
with cancer, for the
duration of their
treatment.
What a generous act

Good luck to Louise Harbottle (11ST).
She is climbing Mount Snowdon this
weekend to raise money for charity in
memory of her brother. The charity
she is raising money for is Papyrus.
INSET DAY
Parents sometimes ask and must often wonder
what the teaching staff do on inset days whilst
students have to be cared for at home.
Parents of older students know that on some of
the days staff provide extra revision sessions. To
avoid having to cover lessons and impact on
student learning, some days are used to moderate
exam work and assessment. We need all the
teachers in a faculty, to participate in this activity
so that we can monitor consistency and high
quality learning and teaching.
This week we worked together deciding what great
teaching should look like in our classrooms. We try to
use the latest research and best international practice
to provide our students with the quality of teaching
you would expect of Meols Cop High School.

from parents, students and staff.
PHILOSOSPHY GROUP
A number of students from year 10 have been regularly attending Philosophy Group every Wednesday
lunch time since the beginning of the year. The group has been led by Glenn Skelhorne from the
‘Philosophy for Teens’ initiative. Our group has really enjoyed debating about the ‘bigger questions’ in
life and there have been many interesting philosophical conversations going on in room 14 on
Wednesday lunch times. Last week each group member was presented with a certificate to mark their
dedication and regular attendance.
The students hope to continue with the group without Glenn for the rest of the year and are often
supported by Mr Lee who enjoys the controversial discussions which take place. Glenn will be back in
the autumn to re-launch the group, which is open to students from all year groups.
If you are unsure if it is for you please dip into some of the excellent books which have been donated to
school as a valuable resource and basis for discussion. It may surprise you to know that we have a whole
section devoted to philosophy in our library. Please feel free to browse!

8 set 2 history students created excellent World War II Battle of the Atlantic ‘learning ships’. Special

Merrills, Jay Myerscough, Sam Davies, Adam Mills,
Nathanial Jackson and Michael Hignett have made
impressive contributions and demonstrated excellent
behaviour in history over the last few lessons. Keep up the

GROWTH MIND SET STARS
9B history students have shown consistent willingness to
try new activities within the classroom. Most recently they
have excelled at 1930s Germany speed dating and trialling
S.P.I.T Peer marking. Well done!
