Introduction
Introduction
Say there’s nothing to do in downtown… we dare you…
Energized by our own experiences and the belief that downtown
Dayton has more to offer UD students than realized, the Dayton
Civic Scholars have created “Beyond Brown: A Student Guide to
Downtown Dayton.” This user friendly guide puts downtown at your
fingertips—transportation and pricing, restaurants, entertainment,
culture, parks and recreation, shopping, and seasonal events—it’s all there, just Beyond Brown.
And who are the Dayton Civic Scholars?
As part of the Fitz Center for Leadership in Community, the purpose of the Dayton Civic Scholars is to shape a “Social Science Excellence” identity within the social science disci-
plines by creating an intentional pathway from the classroom to community leadership and public service.

This restaurant and bar has more to offer than its title states. It has the feel of a sports bar with the typical menu consisting of burgers, fries, chili,
and wings—to name a few items. TVs are mounted on the walls around the
large dining tables, while the other side of the bar has an iTunes jukebox, a
few arcade games, a pool table, and a karaoke stage. “After-work karaoke”
takes place from 5–9pm on Fridays; Tuesdays have a drink special of $2
margaritas or Coronas. This is a casual and inexpensive place to stop during a day downtown, or would be an attractive venue for a social event for a campus group.

The Dublin Pub
937.224.7822
The Dublin Pub is the most authentic Irish pub in the Miami Valley and a great place to go for a hearty Irish meal, live music, and a professionally
poured Guinness! Check the website for the upcoming music schedule. Some pointers for first-timers: as an authentic Irish bar, the Dublin Pub is open seating (no one seats you and there are no reservations), so get there early for dinner on a Friday or Saturday. Service is prompt and
helpful. Portions are big and Irish food is heavy, so come hungry!
300 Wayne Avenue . www.dubpub.com
937.222.3227
Known for its wide selection of delicious Thai food, sushi, and extensive
drinks, this is a great place to catch dinner if you are going somewhere
downtown or just want to get off of campus with family, for a date or a nice roommate night out. You can pick from a scale from 1–9 to choose how spicy you want your food to be. Prices are reasonable for the quality
of food (about $10 –15 per plate) and with two stories inside and a balcony
outside for seating, it is usually not too crowded. On the weekends,
however, we recommend making a reservation.

Restaurants
This traditional Italian restaurant is a great place to take your friends and family when they come to town. Serving all your favorite pasta dishes
made from scratch, be sure to try the Chicken Parmigiana or the Incredible
15 Layer Lasagne. And try not to fill up on the bottomless salad or soup so
you can enjoy some of the Warehouse Tiramisu.

Therapy Café
937.222.2337
This is a trendy and modern restaurant/lounge with an interior that boasts a large bar, tables, and couches. A full dinner menu is offered,
featuring appetizers ($4 –$7), wraps ($6–$8), and gourmet pizzas ($9–$12).
There is an extensive martini and beer menu, which also includes some
wines. Therapy Café features $5 martinis between 4pm– 8pm on weekdays and all day on Wednesdays.

This trendy 2-story bar is the place for young people to go to sit and sip
drinks, play darts, or dance the night away. The high ceilings and unique
designs throughout the bar make for a pleasant atmosphere to spend your
evening. Offering a DJ on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights this is one of the most popular places for students and young local people (21+) to go dancing.
Dayton’s first and Ohio’s oldest comedy club. Food and alcoholic beverages are served; you must be 18 to get in. Shows generally run from Thursday through Sunday night with prices subject to change per show. (Check the website for times, prices, and special shows.) With your
College or Military ID, you get free admission to most Thursday and Sunday
shows and get a $6 deal on a Domino’s pizza you can enjoy while watching
the show! Every Sunday from 8:00pm–8:30pm it is Open Mic Night for
anyone who wants to try out their material on stage!

Located downtown at Fifth Third Field is Dayton’s premier Class A baseball team, the Dayton Dragons. Fifth Third Field has two-deck seating and lawn seats in the outfield, and is considered the best Class
A stadium in the country. Dragons games are an excellent (and cheaper)
alternative to driving all the way to Cincinnati to watch some great baseball. The Dragons have sent many notable players to the major leagues,
including Adam Dunn, Edwin Encarnacion, and Austin Kearns but the
baseball is just as good as ever. So far, the Dragons have sold out every
game since the franchise opened in 2000 so grab your tickets fast!

Dayton, then you need to visit the Wright-Dunbar Interpretative Center.
Get a funny Facebook picture sitting in an ejection seat or learn about how
an airplane really works. At Wright-Dunbar Interpretative Center you also
learn about a famous friend of the Wright Brothers—poet Paul Lawrence
Dunbar. Dunbar’s poetry on the American and African-American experience is timeless. Tours of the Wright Bicycle Shop and Paul Lawrence
