Land Acquisition Dialogue
President's Foreword
Dear Members,
Having been the first JCC member to receive news of the Land
Acquisition by the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) on May 11, I was
deeply saddened by the news that our beloved Club as we know it
would be one of the casualties of the SLA’s plans to construct the
High Speed Rail (HSR) terminus. I was also thoroughly shocked by
the news as prior to the SLA notification; the lease for our club was
good for at least another 20 years.
Upon being served with the Notice of Acquisition by SLA on May
11 2015, an emergency task force was formed comprising of Vice
President Mr KC Foong, Captain Ross Tan, Treasurer Mr Chuah
Yak Ngi, Committee Member Mr Andrew Chua and myself. In the
days that followed we engaged Rajah and Tann to serve as our legal
counsel and appointed Knight Frank as our valuers. During this
short period, a dialogue session with members regarding the land
acquisition was also held in order for the General Committee (GC) to
communicate to our members what we know thus far regarding this
matter. I would like to thank all members who attended and those
who offered their insightful advice on making our case.
In these trying times, I would like to assure members that the GC
along with our legal counsel will look out for the best interest of
all our members when negotiating matters such as compensation.
Kindly rest assured that we will present our case to the best of
our abilities so as to secure the highest compensation possible
for all our members. There is no better time than the present to
work together for the benefit of all members. I urge all members to
come forward with their suggestions and concerns so that we may
address them. I would also like to inform debenture holders that we
are looking into forming a group to handle the issues pertaining to
debentures.
I sincerely hope that our members will continue to frequent the Club
and enjoy our facilities in spite of the foreboding knowledge that we
may have only 16 months left. Please do take what limited time we
have to make memories with new found friends and reminisce with
old ones. I am proud to say that over the years JCC has provided
me with much more than a place to play golf but a second home
as well where many friendships have been formed. I would like to
remind our members that in spite of the upcoming land acquisition;
currently our club is still going strong. There is no time like now to
bond with family and friends as we have for over 40 years.
The next update on this acquisition process will take place at our
Extraordinary General Meeting (EOGM) in August 2015 during which
we hope to share new information with members. I look forward to
seeing you all at the EOGM, hopefully with good news.

Captain's Foreword
Dear Members,
Just like many of us, I have yet to
recover from the shock of receiving the
bad news that our beloved JCC is being
gazetted for takeover by the government
for development of the proposed High
Speed Rail (HSR) Terminus.
After the major Golf course upgrade, the
main focus of the General Committee
(GC) ensuring that the beautiful new
course was maintained to an above
optimal condition. I am happy to say
that we did better than expected,
next we turned our focus to building
our new Short Game facility and even
before its supposed opening on the
1 June, we got hit by this bad news!
At our recent Annual General Meeting
(AGM) held in March 2015, members
voted to go ahead with our big plans to
upgrade our main building facilities. Key
amongst these plans were the newly
refurbished Men’s and Ladies’ Golfer
changing rooms. These proposed
plans were all supposed to help elevate
JCC in attaining premier club status.
Unfortunately due to these sudden
unforeseen circumstances it has
become so painful for me to be playing
the course that I know will be gone in
just 16 months’ time! I think of all the
many regular golfers who have for many
years worked and now being semi or
fully retired finally were looking forward
to golfing regularly at their treasured
JCC course. Is it fair to them, whatever
the eventual compensation? Some had
even worked out a long term solution
of not driving after retirement and
possibly staying at a closer proximity to
JCC so that they could indulge in their
most loved past time into their twilight
years. I am worried by the thought of
what the majority of our active senior
members will do especially if they can’t
afford to join another golf club or find
it too inconvenient to travel to cheaper
options in Malaysia or Batam after the
club is handed over to government in
November 2016. Will they simply retire
at golfing for good?
For now, I would like to remind members
that the final handover date is at the end
of November 2016. (Unless otherwise
announced in the upcoming months) In
the time following the handover date,
various processes such as the destocking of assets and so on will need
to be conducted. Having said this,
the good news is that we still have an
estimated 16 months of great golfing
at JCC to look forward to. As such, I
urge member golfers to continue with
their efforts in up-keeping our beautiful
course for the enjoyment of all golfers
who play our course. Do continue
repairing fairway divots, green ball
marks and raking bunkers because
giving up would mean that we do not get
to make the best out of a bad situation
and enjoy our course for the remaining
16 months or so. Perhaps by October
2016, we can slow down on course care
and maintenance efforts as expected.
As for the control and removal of
Fairway weeds, we have decided not to
focus too much on removal by spending
excessively on expensive chemicals or
wasting manpower. This is due to the
fact that the condition of the greens will
be irrelevant when the takeover occurs.
I am pleased to announce that this year
JCC will be hosting the Etiqa Jurong
Charity Golf on Saturday, 22 August
2015. The highlight of the event will be
the afternoon shot-gun tournament with
our Guest of Honour - Emeritus Senior
Minister Goh Chok Tong. I would like
to offer my heartfelt gratitude to Etiqa
and the rest of our sponsors for their
generous contributions that will go a
long way in assisting our beneficiaries in
helping those in need.
I sincerely hope members will
understand that in order for us to
operate the club effectively, a regular
source of income is essential. With the
removal of maintenance fees and no
more transfer fees, the club will possibly
face a shortfall of around $1.5 million or
so annually. Recently I have received
feedback from members recommending
that we should also cease hosting all
Corporate events. If we do so, I am
afraid that going down the road we may
have serious financial shortfalls. Let
me however assure members that we
will continue to be prudent and for the
2015 events already confirmed we will
continue as normal. However going into
2016, upon receiving stronger assurance
from the government of compensation,
there is a strong likelihood that the
acceptance of Corporate events will
be heavily curtailed in order to provide
more opportunities for our members to
enjoy golfing on our beloved course.

Land Acquisition Dialogue Session with Members
The Land Acquisition Dialogue was held
on 26 May 2015 to update members
on the decision of the Singapore Land
Authority (SLA) to acquire the land that the
club is currently situated on. The event
saw a huge turnout of over 400 members.
Members who could not be seated in the
ballrooms due to space constraints were
also able to watch the session live at Fu
Lin Men Restaurant.
President Bobby Wee kick started the
dialogue session welcoming members
and introducing them to the legal
advisors from the engaged law firm Rajah
and Tann as well as the facilitator for the
evening - Marcom Committee Chairman
Mr Michael Liew.
First up on the evening’s agenda was the
land acquisition timeline during which the
members were briefed on the sequence
of events following 11 May 2015, the date

course conditions will be kept optimal for
the enjoyment of all golfers.
After the brief but informative slide
presentation, the floor was opened
up to members who wished to make
suggestions or enquire on issues
pertaining to the land acquisition.
Questions ranged from compensation
issues to enquiries centering on the
future of JCC. Members also made their
opinions known on these issues and
offered their perspectives on handling
the acquisition process. The GC and the
legal team certainly benefited from the
expertise that our members of various
backgrounds brought to the table.
All in all the dialogue session proved to be
a truly fruitful exchange that also served
as a brainstorming exchange thanks
to the numerous insightful suggestions
contributed by our members.
Concluding the evening on a positive
note, President Bobby Wee encouraged
all members to enjoy the course and
facilities in the time that remained and
Captain Ross Tan assured them that

Flying High with JCC's
Most Colourful Residents
Keep an eagle eye out for some of JCC’s most charming
residents the next time you are enjoying the fairways.
Depending on the season, weather, and type of flora
available, the undulating greens of the first nine holes
and the flat wide expanse of the second nine holes play
host to several species of beautiful birds. Below are just
eight types of migratory and locally common birds you’ll
be able to identify the next time you’re out gunning for
that hole-in-one.

2015 SGA Interclub League
On 18 April 2015, we were honored
to welcome our friends from Etiqa
Insurance to take a swing at playing our
Championship Course here at JCC. Our
prestigious guests included several high
level Maybank managers as well as the
CEO of Etiqa Insurance Mr Sue Chi Kong.
After a glorious morning of golfing followed
by a sumptuous dinner, JCC was presented
a $100, 000 cheque by Etiqa for this year’s
Jurong Charity Golf event.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to
our friends and fellow golfers at Etiqa
Insurance, our title sponsor for this
year’s Jurong Charity Golf event for their
immense generosity. Our beneficiaries
this year include The Straits Times School
Pocket Fund, Lakeside Family Centre,
Society for the Aged Sick and Association
for Persons with Special Needs. We are
confident that Etiqa’s heartfelt contribution
along with those of our other sponsors and
participants will go a long way in assisting
these organizations in their mission to
offer shelter for homeless children, training
programs enhancing employability of
special needs individuals and medical care
for senior citizens.
JCC played against Laguna National at
National Service Resort and Country Club
(NSRCC), Kranji on 12 April and won the
match 9 and 5 in the first leg. The Premier

Littering at the Golf Course
When golfers visit our Club for their round of golf, they generally expect to enjoy
a pleasantly verdant course. Unfortunately the serene pastures are sometimes
tainted by litter left behind by other golfers.
The most common form of litter are cigarette buds which can prove to be both
unsightly and irritating when strewn around the greens.
We seek the cooperation of golfers to be mindful about littering on the course. Ash
trays are provided at the 1st and 10th tee for golfers who smoke to dispose of their
cigarette buds. We seek the cooperation of all golfers in keeping our course clean
and green at all times for the benefit of all who play our course.

Swimmers’ Appreciation Night
Our swimmers had a splashing good time at our recently held
Swimmer’s Appreciation Night. The highlights included a fun
filled water polo match in which our esteemed aquatic champs
pitted their skills against each other in a few rounds and wet and
wild fun. To add to the excitement, a delectable dinner buffet
was also served up for the swimmers. In commemoration of their
efforts, swimmers were also given awards by their coaches as a
token of appreciation.
Perhaps the most memorable moments during the event came in
the form of heartfelt words to mothers from swimmers expressing
their gratitude and love, some of which were selected to be awarded.
We would like to thank all our swimmers and their families for having
made this event a splashing success. We are confident that our
junior swim champs will continue to excel and do JCC proud.

Squash Friendly With SAFSA
12 JCC players pit their squash skills against 10 players from
the Singapore Armed Forces Sports Association (SAFSA) in a
friendly match that consisted of a diverse range of participants
from youthful amateurs to seasoned veterans. Our very own
veteran players gave their all with our oldest player Mr Chow
stopping short of beating his opponent.
In the end, SAFSA’s squash team having won 7 out of
10 matches emerged as the winner. (Matches
are played best of 3 games) The exhausted
players were then treated to a sumptuous
buffet after the game, concluding
the fun filled friendly match.
