One of the most enjoyable things about
being an educator is to feel the excitement
as another school year approaches. As we
move into August there are an increasing
number of signs on a daily basis that another school year is just around the corner.
Fall sport teams and the marching band
are well into their pre-season practices,
custodians are wrapping up preparing each
building and the campus for the first day
of school, and teachers have already begun readying their classrooms for the start
of the new year.
With the start of a new year there are several items I would encourage parents to
pay special attention to.
Free and reduced lunch forms will be sent
to parents of all students during the first
week of school. Not only does this program provide aid for families in need, but
the district receives federal funding for
students enrolled in the program. Participation in this program is completely confidential, especially now that the district
uses an online point of sale program.
For new students, forms for the rapid notification phone system (ConnectEd) will
also be made available to parents during
the first week of school. These forms
should be returned immediately as this
system is invaluable in notifying students
about school closures and delays as well
as important school announcements and
activities.
Visitors to Wynford are reminded that the
Wynford campus is a smoke-free facility.
We ask that all visitors respect this fact
while on school grounds.
Many new faces will greet our students
when they arrive for the first day of school
on Wednesday, August 19th. Ten new
employees begin their careers at Wynford
this year (see page 3). The new ideas,
energy, and enthusiasm that new employees bring with them have an invigorating
effect on an organization, and we warmly
welcome this group to the Wynford community.
Several teachers retired at the conclusion
of the 2015-16 school year. Joyce Klamfoth, who taught kindergarten for 22 years
in our district and Laura Stuckey, who
taught in several different grade levels in
the elementary building over 12 years,
both ended their teaching careers when the
school doors closed last May. The
Wynford Board of Education, administration, staff and students thank them for
their work for the students of this district
and wish them all the best in their future
endeavors.
Students will also notice an administrative
re-organization in both buildings. Nelle
Nutter, who served as the elementary principal at the Mohawk Local School, is our
new principal for the elementary building.
Chris Solis will serve as principal for
grades 7-9 with Jeff Holbrook being the
10-12 principal. This administrative arrangement for grades 7-12 is one that was
used previously with great success but
Wynford Local
Superintendent’s message continued from page 1
was abandoned during the economic downturn. Tim
Ehresman is now the district’s athletic director and will
assume this new position while still holding some of
his previous teaching assignments.
The Ohio legislature recently approved the biennium
budget which will result in significant increases in
basic state funding for our district. While the exact
amount of the increase has yet to be determined as it is
based on enrollment figures which will be determined
in October, the increases we will receive are unlike any
we have seen during my tenure as superintendent. This
increased funding will enable us to address needs that
exist in transportation, technology, and instructional
supplies which have been put on hold for a number of
years. The Governor and legislative branch are to be
commended for allowing the children of Ohio to share
in the economic recovery of the state through increased
state funding.
Finally, I encourage you to attend the many school activities that are scheduled throughout the year in our
school and especially recommend that you join one of
our booster groups (PTO, Academic Boosters, Music
Boosters, Athletic Boosters) that support our students.
BUSSING
Parents and students should note that bus routes
from 2014-15 will remain for the most part unchanged for the upcoming school year. Some minor changes could occur to accommodate student
population changes. Bus routes will be posted on
the district website and in both buildings on Friday, August 14th.
RECYCLING
Recycling will continue for the 2015-16
school year but will only occur one day a
month on the last Saturday of each
month from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
Wynford Commencement Celebrates Class of 2015
The achievements and accomplishments of 88 graduates were celebrated during the 52nd commencement
ceremony in May.
Wynford recognized 88 seniors in perfect weather at
the outdoor ceremony held at the athletic complex. Co
-valedictorians Hannah Kocher and Thomas Smith
gave speeches and encouraged their classmates to
cherish their Wynford memories, to celebrate their
milestones and to continue to strive for excellence.
Page 2
The Top Ten students in the class, as determined by
their four year accumulative grade point average, were
recognized. They are: Hannah Kocher (GPA 4.39)
Thomas Smith (GPA 4.39), Michaela Wagner (GPA
4.18), Kalyn Heinle (GPA 4.05), Allie Crall (GPA
4.01), Brooke Miller (GPA 3.93), Tessa Starner (GPA
3.81), David Blank (GPA 3.78), Anna Leibengood
(GPA 3.78), and Ellie Richmond (GPA 3.77).
The ceremony concluded with a fireworks display that
was made possible by generous anonymous donations
from community members.

11 New Employees Start Their Careers at Wynford
The Wynford Schools will welcome eleven new employees to
our community when school
opens on August 19th.
Nelle Nutter will bring a
strong record of administrative
success as our new elementary
principal. She previously
served as the elementary principal in the Mohawk Local
Schools. During her two years
as principal at Mohawk she
guided her building to impressive student academic achievement improvement and implemented several innovative intervention and after school programs. She is a seventeen year
veteran in education.
Andy Amlin comes to
Wynford from Fostoria St.
Wendelin where he served as
social studies teacher and dean
of students. He will be teaching junior high social studies
and will also coach football
and basketball.
Jason Engel will be teaching
health and physical education
in grades 7-12 and will be our
next head boy’s basketball
coach. Jason previously taught
and coached at Ayersville High
School.
Amber (Rall) Groves is no
stranger to the Wynford community and returns to her alma
mater as the district’s elementary physical education teacher.
She will also serve as the boy’s
head track coach.
Jamee Burke is a recent graduate of West Liberty College in
West Virginia and will be a
special education teacher for
the 7th and 8th grade. She will
put her college softball playing
experience to good use as a
softball coach in the spring.
Zachary Burns did his student
teaching experience at
Wynford last school year and
as a result of the fine job he did
in that requirement, will be a
2nd grade teacher at the elementary building.
Malorie (Honaker) Heinlen
is a 2011 graduate of Wynford
and a recent graduate of Heidelberg University. She will
teach kindergarten.
Kayla (Smith) Stacklin is another Wynford graduate who
returns to Wynford with nine
years of teaching experience
with the Marion City Schools.
She will teach kindergarten.
William Byrnes will teach 5th
grade at the elementary and has
previous teaching experience is
in Michigan and Toledo.
Christopher Leighty has six
years of teaching experience,
the most recent being in Oklahoma and will teach 6th grade.
Becky Kirgis has broad and
varied experiences as an RN,
including three years as a
school nurse which will serve
her and our district well as she
starts her first year as
Wynford’s school nurse.
“Saturday Mornings with the Superintendent”
Superintendent Steve Mohr wants to hear from you! Significant changes are taking place in education today. In an effort to improve communications with district residents about these changes,
or any issue or concern district residents may have, he will be available on the second and fourth
Saturday of every month from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the high school library. The next
"Saturday Mornings With The Superintendent" will be Saturday, August 22nd. This is an informal setting, no appointments are necessary.

Newsletter Title
Jeff Holbrook, High School Principal
The school year is steadily approaching. Where did the summer go?
Wynford High School and Junior High will have a mandatory
7th grade/new student orientation
on Monday, August 17th at 7:00
pm in the High School auditorium. The students and parents
will be acclimated to basic handbook rules and regulations for
the upcoming school year. Students will be able to receive
schedules, master locker combinations, and learn locations of
the classrooms. Please be sure to
be in the auditorium prior to
7:00 pm. We will have staff
passing out packets of information for all 7th grade/new students.
As we move forward, we will
continue to inform students, parents, and community members
through various outlets such as
the newsletter, our website, and
our “Connect Ed” system. The
Wynford High School has recently started a “Facebook page”
entitled Wynford High School.
The page is dedicated to providing information, pictures of our
student’s work, items we are
proud of, and various other
school related material. I will
update the page frequently and it
will be a good source of delays,
closings, and important dates.
Please make sure to check it out
via Facebook: Wynford High
School.
Wynford High School will start
on August 19th. Fall is a great
time of the year, signifying an
end to summer and the beginning of school and sports. I look
forward to our students and athletes walking the halls and competing.
As the new year approaches we
have made some minor changes
to our policies in attendance and
dress code. Our attendance policy will no longer “fail” students
for unexcused absences, but will
remain in accordance with the
State of Ohio’s attendance policy
of a 92% attendance rate. We continue to ask that the student’s
parent/guardian calls in the absence that morning and sends a
note of the absence within a 48
hour time frame.
Secondly, the administration will
be addressing shorts that are
deemed too short from day one. A
good example of attire that is typically too short are the various
brands of running shorts, typically
made by Nike, Under Armour,
Adidas, etc. Please make sure to
check the policies on dress code,
attendance, and cell phones located in the 2015/2016 student handbook which all students receive a
copy of. The student handbook is
also posted on the district website.
Finally, you will see a list of dates that are important as the school year begins:

Wynford Elementary is a “The Leader in Me School”
Wynford Elementary
will join over 2,000 public, private, charter, and
magnet schools across
35 countries when it begins the process of becoming a “The Leader in
Me” school on the first
day of school on August
19th.
“The Leader in Me” program is a whole school
transformation process
that teaches 21st century
leadership and life skills
to students and creates a
culture of student empowerment based on the
idea that every child can
be a leader. Content
from the best-selling
book, The 7 Habits of
Highly Effective People
is a key component of
the overall “The Leader
in Me” process. The 7
Habits is a synthesis of
universal, timeless principles of personal and
interpersonal effectiveness, such as responsibility, vision, integrity,
teamwork, collaboration
and renewal, which are
secular in nature and
common to all people
and cultures.
“The Leader in Me” program was founded by
Muriel Summers, Principal of A.B Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh,
N.C. In an effort to turn
around her school she
identified leadership as
her school theme based
on community feedback.
She approached Franklin
Covey as a partner in
designing, developing
and implementing a
leadership model for her
school which drew on
the 7 Habits and also
incorporated educational
best practices.
The Wynford Elementary staff has been involved in a year-long
process of preparation to
implement this innovative program. During the
past school year two
teacher led book studies
were held. Elementary
staff visited schools that
had implemented “The
Leader in Me” program
and attended several
statewide “The Leader
in Me” events. Formal
training took place on
August 10th, 11th and
12th.
The staff, administration, and Board of Education are excited about
seeing our children
through this new paradigm; that every child is
capable, and every child
is a leader.
The 7 Habits Tree

“Begin with the end

Elementary News
I am so very excited to
become part of the
Wynford School Community! I graduated from
Hopewell –Loudon, and
worked at Mohawk the last
16 years, so Wynford feels
like home to me. I am
looking forward to getting
to know the students and
parents and becoming part
of the community.
This is the start of my 18th
year in education. I taught
2nd through 4th grades,
coached volleyball and
basketball, was the principal for a Pk-6 building and
initiated many studentcentered activities. I look
forward to sharing my passion for student success
with the staff and making
sure that the students know
that school is a safe and
caring place for them to
be.
There are many changes
that have occurred in the
testing arena since last
year. I will work diligently to keep you informed on
the state and local requirements. What we know
right now is that the
PARCC testing has been
changed to AIR, which
means significantly less
time spent on testing. We,
as a district, will use
NWEA MAP testing in
grades K-6, which gives
immediate results that will
help teachers plan instruc-
Nelle Nutter, Principal
tion, intervention and differentiation. We will test
three times throughout the
year and teachers will
share those results with
students and families.
We are very excited to
announce that Wynford
Elementary was granted
the 21st Century Learning
Grant! This includes a
substantial amount of
money that the building
can use on educational
supplies, technology and
programs to help meet the
individual needs of our
students. As we start to
roll out the programs, I
will be sure to keep you
informed and up to date.
Please follow us on

As we begin the school year, you will receive lots of information. Please feel free to
contact me with questions or concerns as they arise. A positive relationship between
home and school is imperative for student success. Please feel free to call the office

Prohibition Against Harassment,
Intimidation, Bullying
With the much publicized national news reports of serious incidents of bullying that took place last spring, it is
important to know that harassment, intimidation, or bullying behavior by any student/school personnel in the
Wynford Local School district is strictly prohibited.
According to House Bill 276 “Harassment, intimidation, or bullying means any intentional written, verbal,
graphic or physical act, including electronically transmitted acts ( i.e. Internet, cell phone, personal digital assistant (PDA) or wireless hand-held devices), either overt or covert, by a student or group of students towards
other students with the intent to harass, intimidate, injure, threaten, ridicule or humiliate.” Such behavior is
prohibited on or immediately adjacent to school grounds, at any school sponsored activity, on school provided
transportation, or at any official school bus stop.
Such conduct may result in disciplinary action including suspension and/or expulsion from school.

Wynford Cheerleaders
The Wynford Varsity and
JV Cheerleaders attended
UCA Camp at Bowling
Green State University in
June. At camp they learned
new pre-game ideas,
cheers, and choreography
to keep pep rallies and
school traditions fresh and
energized. They also
learned offense, defense
and general sidelines and
how to transition between
cheers and band dances on
the sidelines! On the last
day they performed an
Xtreme Routine & Game
Day Routine (cheer, sideline and fight song). As a
combined squad they rePage 17
ceived the following
awards: 3rd Place Xtreme
Routine, 2 Superior Ribbons, Spirit Stick and the
Superior Squad award.
Both Varsity and JV
squads also received the
Tradition award going to
the team that really excels

showcases the most traditional cheers and chants
throughout the entire week
of camp. The Leadership
Pin was given to Kennedy

Notification of Rights under FERPA for Elementary and Secondary Schools
Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18
years of age ("eligible students")
certain rights with respect to the
student's education records. These
rights are:
(1) The right to inspect and
review the student's education
records within 45 days of the day
the School receives a request for
access.
Parents or eligible students
should submit to the School principal [or appropriate school official] a written request that identifies the record(s) they wish to
inspect. The School official will
make arrangements for access and
notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where
the records may be inspected.
(2) The right to request the
amendment of the student’s education records that the parent or
eligible student believes are inaccurate.
Parents or eligible students
may ask the School to amend a
record that they believe is inaccurate. They should write the
school principal [or appropriate
school official], clearly identify
the part of the record they want
changed, and specify why it is
inaccurate. If the School decides
Page 19
not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible
student, the School will notify the
parent or eligible student of the
decision and advise them of their
right to a hearing regarding the
request for amendment. Additional information regarding the
hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible
student when notified of the right
to a hearing.
(3) The right to consent to
disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the
student's education records, except to the extent that FERPA
authorizes disclosure without
consent.
One exception, which permits disclosure without consent,
is disclosure to school officials
with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person
employed by the School as an
administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member
(including health or medical staff
and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the
School Board; a person or company with whom the School has
contracted to perform a special
task (such as an attorney, auditor,
medical consultant, or therapist);
or a parent or student serving on
an official committee, such as a
disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school
official in performing his or her
tasks.
A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the
official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his
or her professional responsibility.
Upon request, the School
discloses education records without consent to officials of another
school district in which a student
seeks or intends to enroll.
[NOTE: FERPA requires a
school district to make a reasonable attempt to notify the parent or
student of the records re-quest
unless it states in its annual notification that it intends to forward
records on request.]
(4)The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department
of Education concerning alleged
failures by the School District to
comply with the requirements of
FERPA. The name and address
of the Office that administers
FERPA are:
