President Message
H
ow do you measure a
SSAFI year?
In smiles, in touching lives, in walking the extra
mile, in giving one’s cloak. Not
looking the other way — rather
looking after its very own.
Welcome to the gut
wrenching, heart filling, soul
enriching fold of SSAFI! To the
Elementary, Secondary and College graduates — warm
congratulations for making it through to your rites of passage. A fresh set of adventures of spikes and nosedives, fits
and starts await to reshape you and test your Scholastican
mettle as you step into new thresholds. The long and short
of the journey is to let your Scholastican beacon shine. To
the Platinum alumnae whose bravado took them back recently to the SSC halls in attendance to be celebrated and
honored in the winter of their lives, to the Boys of Sr. Gratia
who continue to keep sacred and alive the memory of their
early mentor through their grateful devotion and loyalty
long after her sparks, to all jubilarians and the rest of the
alumnae who rev up and fortify the Scholastican spirit in
retreats and recollections, reunion get together, through
social networking via Facebook, Yahoogroups and the
newsletters — your St. Scholastica’s Alumane Foundation
Incorporated welcomes you back in loving embrace. This
2012, we turn over a new leaf and with renewed fervor and
brio merge body, heart and mind once more for tasks that
underscore SSAFI’s reasons for being. Deeper audience
reachability through social media was the thrust of SSAFI
in 2012. Technology will partner with social interaction
to enhance the laudable initiatives of my predecessors and
further tighten the bind of Scholastican unity in ORA ET
EDIT O RIA L B OX
LABORA. In forging ahead to the realization of the all time
mission and vision of the SSAFI, the cheery support and
utmost cooperation of each alumnae batch through their
class representatives in information spread backed with active participation in events are sought and enjoined. The
visits to our retired nuns will continue by SSAFI and the
different batches or classes. To sustain and beef up our
alumnae roster, the alumnae data base will constantly be
updated. The SSAFI card will continue to serve the needs of
its holders as relentless efforts and strides are taken to amp
up its benefits and features. SSAFI projects in consonance
with our alma mater’s apostolate in service of the poor and
the marginalized via scholarship programs like Child of the
Scholastican and Night Secondary Scholars and the Christmas gift giving will be actively pursued.
With the unwavering confidence in and thumbs up of
the alumnae for SSAFI that we now seek to engage, new
avenues will untiringly be explored, discovered and pursued to ensure continuum. The years have witnessed how
SSAFI effectively primed and brought together Scholasticans from near and far for the yearly homecoming celebrations of our jubilarians. All the seeming drudgery and
hard knocks spearheaded by SSAFI resulted in fun success
and fond memories of breakthrough friendships forged and
allianced through chats and coffee cups in between. The
SSAFI is staunchly committed to the dream of keeping the
SSC banner flying high in the sky.
SSAFI needs you.
Be counted in and every SCHOLASTICAN lives on.
Cheers to another SSAFI fun filled year!
Thank you.

2012-2013
Dear Alumnae,
Homecoming is always a special
day for the celebrating high school and
college classes. It is a time to revisit
friendship and memories, encourage
our alumnae to take time out to revisit
the school and see how SSC is moving
on in time. This issue carries several stories. We have the
SSAFI activities and fundraisers. We share with you visits
and a profile. We also inform you of batch representatives
you can look up.
Thank you for coming every year; thank you for
being generous to SSAFI and to SSC (we don’t mind if you
are overgenerous!) But most of all, continue to remember
SSC, the values you learned and continue to be in touch
with us through slow mail, telephone, email and Facebook.

Scholastican
Platinum Alumnae
Event-Celebration
of Life 2012
O
Heidi Perez Cruz, HS49/AB53
Maria Elsa Lava Mapua, HS63/College67
nce a year Scholasticans
from all over the world come
home for their traditional
homecoming. The groupings are by
jubilee because each class jubilarian
has to present a number during the
afternoon program. Jubilarians or not,
they come just the same to watch the
extravaganza. Taking center stage are
the silver jubilarians (25 years after HS
graduation) who take charge of the
program that can top any musical seen
on local televisions. In chronological
order, next to them are the pearl
(30 years), coral (35), ruby (40), 45
(sapphire), 50 (golden), 55 (emerald),
and 60 (diamond). Anything to put
them all on stage for their respective
musical numbers.
After their diamond jubilee, the
alumnae are either disabled by age or
simply no longer interested in mixing
around with their younger sisters. They
seem to go the MacArthur way that
old alumnae never die, they just fade
away. Until...
One day the alumnae association
(fondly called SSAFI for St. Scholastica’s
Alumnae Foundation, Inc.) came up
with a brilliant idea. They gathered
their sisters aged 85 and above at a
get-together exclusively for them in
at St. Hildegarde’s Social Hall. Not
surprisingly many came and since
Scholasticans are by nature gregarious,
the home-bound alumnae bonded
with their contemporaries just like old
times. There was a little program, a
light merienda and give-aways. It was
so well attended SSAFI Board thought
there should be a second round.
And so it was on the last
Thursday of July that a reunion of
Platinum alumnae came about. This
time, there was a note for formality
8
PAX
that asked the presence of alumnae 80
years old and above, at a “Celebration
of Life 2012”. Aside from all the
fantastic entertainment, food galore
and giveaways, they each received a
sheep-skin certificate “in recognition
of her elevation to the level of Platinum
Alumna for having crossed the barriers
of age and vicissitudes of time to reach
her venerable age and whose class had
celebrated its Diamond Jubilee”...
The invitation was for 3:00 pm
but as early as 2pm, some had already
trooped to the new St. Cecilia’s
building. By 3 pm all seats were taken
but more arrivals came pouring in. Seats
were not much of a problem because
many brought their own seats – their
wheel chairs. Many were assisted by
their care-givers and some by their
canes. One proud Scholastican with
a pearl-inlaid cane said it was only a
prop. She did not really need it. But
she could be seen limping her way
around aided by her cane as she went
from table to table. Scholasticans have
a wry sense of humor.
To use a cliche, the hall was
filled to the rafters. The din of the
excited greetings drowned out the
audio system, until emcee Gigi Prats
HS70, a Board member, repeatedly
announced - Let the program begin!
Didi Villegas, SSAFI Internal VP,
HS65, started with an invocation and
Sr. Angelica Leviste, new Alumnae
Moderator, gave a history on how St.
Scholastica’s Alumnae Association
(SSAA) is now called SSAFI. Silver
Jubilarians HS88 also invited the
Platinums to attend the annual
homecoming in February 2013.
First number after the preliminaries, was that of Lita Tanjangco Banson
COL ’51. Immediately after she and her
partner dashed to center stage in their
leopard and black costume, a hush fell
on the distinguished white heads. It is
better described as good enough to be
in an Olympic sports dance competition. She was spun around with her
slim body and outstretched arms horizontal to the floor, only to be brought
abruptly vertically up. One part that
drew wild cheers was when she went
upside down vertically with her blackstockinged leg past her partner’s head
and her own head just an inch from
the floor. It was gymnastics and dance
done the special arrangement of The
Prayer.
Not to be outdone was Benita
(Bitay) Imperial Tinio HS38, aged 91.
Dressed in a flowered dress that swayed
to each movement, she danced a medley of chacha, samba
and tango with her own DI (dance instructor). Despite the
turns and the spins, not a hair of hers went out of place.
That’s how Bitay has always been known to us. And at 91
she is still impeccably well -dressed, accessoried, made-up
and hair-doed.
Children of alumnae did their part. Vince Lim, son,
of Board member Marilou Simon Lim HS71 and Margaret
Rosales Gloria HS85, daughter of Teresita Karaan Rosales
HS 48, sang a well-blended duet with Digna Agra Roxas
Coll49 at the piano.
Elsa Lava-Mapua HS63, SSAFI External VP and
Chairperson of Membership Committee led the community
singing after.
Last but not least, the ultimate singer and comedienne,
Mitch Valdes HS68, threw affectionate digs at Sister
Angelica and other nuns. Since she was on home grounds,
her rib-tickling lines were mostly about her experiences in
St. Scho. So she sent the Platinums into shivering laughter
which they probably did not do in a long time!
SSAFI certificates and giveaways were given to
each Platinum alumna by Sr. Angelica, Special Events’
Chairperson Salud Donato de Castro HS48, Bang Karaan
and Elsa Mapua, together with two little girls Reese Alvia,
daughter of Abigail Yee Alvia HS89, Mariana de Castro,
granddaughter of Salud, and a little boy, Jaime Ibarra
Lumbad, nephew of Marina Bautista Cabrera HS82.
The giveaway was a product of the creativity of Board
member Salud de Castro – a cut glass dresser item filled
with polvoron-pinipig made by one of the Platinum girls.
It was wrapped in blue toulle, tied with a silver ribbon on
which a St. Benedict medal was attached. Some of the food
was also provided by alumnae cuisine experts. So it was
mostly inhouse labor.
The giveaways (by Amelita Adriano Daza HS48),
the food (catered by Tracy Tuason, daughter of Fe Ynciong
Tuazon HS41and Board member Marilen del Rosario Lopez
HS62) and decorations (by Board member Baba Aro Santos
HS72 ) were a hit!
The Gallery of Photos of the Platinum alumnae
prepared by Board Member Corie del Rosario HS69 and
all around Office Assistant Noemi Laca was projected on
a screen. Everyone ended up singing Let’s Cheer For St.
Scholastica and Bless Oh Dearest Mother, accompanied on
the piano by Dean of Music, Sr. Mary Placid OSB Coll56.
Other SSAFI Board Members, Nitz San Agustin
Sandejas, Charlie Aunario Azcuna, Ampy Lim, Boots
Viola de Veyra, Marilou Simon Lim, Tina Puno, Anna
Leah Wong, Tita Rose Liao Tan and Elaine Saul Baloloy
were hard at work that afternoon. Scholastican volunteers
enthusiastically helping out were: Heidi Perez Cruz HS49
and Linda Suguitan Aquino Coll52 (both Platinums); Pilar
Quintos Francisco Coll62, Rose Santiago HS77, Dina
Karaan HS64 and Mitzy Agcaoili HS87.
Congratulations to the hard-working board members
led by SSAFI President, Sylvia (Bang) Karaan and SSAFI’s
Special Events and Membership committees, the volunteers
and all those who helped behind the scenes, and of course
to all the Platinum Jubilarians who attended the affair, for
the huge success of Celebration Of Life 2012!
Special Thanks to Him who gave us good weather
that day!

The Big Heart
of Tita Choleng
Maria Asuncion A. Azcuna, College83
I
received a very early text on
July 9, 2012 informing me of
Tita Choleng’s passing away. The
text hit me with a powerful punch!
Though Tita Choleng was 91 at her
passing, I somehow believed her to
be immortal. Even when I passed on
the information I could not say in
words that Tita Choleng had passed
away. The few friends I called had
to guess as I choked in my message
delivery.
I met Tita Choleng in 1994
when she was invited to the SSAFI
board to fill her sister’s unfinished
director’s term. She looked serious;
she was logical & organized (She
was a practicing Chemist); frugal (As
Treasurer, all expenses & financial
requisitions had to be thoroughly
explained); a Scholastican through
& through; so very Benedictine; but
most of all a very dear, sweet friend
who blended with senior and young
alumnae.
We were two peas in a pod: Tita
Choleng was treasurer; I was assistant
treasurer. I did not have much to do;
she did it all.
We shared a common link
since her nephews and nieces were
my friends, too. Her nephews and
nieces were her very special people
next to her brother and sisters.
The two of us shared stories,
and jokes thru text. It took some time
before she finally learned how to
read text messages in text language
and would complain if I did not text
jokes.
Every year she made sure I had
a small basket of lansones and two
atis from her garden. I still keep the
note that came with her first atis gift.
It said “Your share from my tree Tita
Choleng.” I had the privilege of being
invited for merienda to her home a
few times. I visited her twice when
she was not well. She would always
say that I should not worry or bother
over her being sick.
At Christmas time I would
have a small pot of tasty beef cubes
with castañas. She would save up
chocolates for me if I came late for
our monthly SSAFI meetings.
When I would drive her home
after late night SSAFI events, Tita
Choleng’s logic & organizational skill
would kick in with street direction.
I would insist that I knew where
she lived, and how to drive to her
home.
I had actually asked her to teach
a class in Arts & Sciences so she could
observe personally contemporary
students at their lessons. I gave her
the choice of a Science subject,
or a Math class or one in Quality
Assurance. Unfortunately, we never
got to implement this project. It
would have been fun to see how
Tita Choleng and her students would
have adapted to each other.
Her 90th birthday was a grand
affair, for after all, how many can
claim to reach 90 years of age in
good health, with an inquisitive mind,
working two jobs and comfortably
well off? Still, she spent party time
seeing to it that all her guests were
comfortable, well served and well
fed.
I will miss Tita Choleng very
much. Both prudent and wise, we
had a friendship that crossed, the
age barrier, but most of all my 91year-old friend always wanted to
know more and her spirit was always
willing to try the unexplored. Tita
Choleng was very much loved and
appreciated by the SSAFI members!
P.S. - Tita Choleng, I learned well
from you the task of being an efficient
treasurer. Your spirit lives on!

Surprise Party for
Ginang Teresita De Vera
O
n a home visit to Manila for a grandchild wedding,
the children of Ginang de Vera prepared a surprise
party for Ginang at St. Scholastica’s College
President’s Function Hall. Preparations were handled
by the High School administrators and faculty, many of
whom were her students. Having no clue at all, Ginang de
Vera was toured around St. Scholastica and finally found
her way to the Function Hall where administrators, faculty
and friends welcomed her enthusiastically. After a short
program and merienda, line dancing was the order of the
day! Ginang de Vera also danced the tango with one of the
PE faculty. Very well remembered, much loved, Ginang
de Vera was all smiles meeting up with friends and former
students.
Message from:
Marie Pattugalan, daughter of Ginang de Vera
Im back in Toronto and finally got time to attend to
my personal emails.
In behalf of my family, we would like to extend our
sincere thanks for coordinating the surprise welcome
party for my mom, Mrs. De Vera. She was extremely
overwhelmed seeing everyone, watching the video,
listening to speeches, talking to everyone, dancing (thanks
for inviting Encar, can’t believe our former PE teachers and
nuns dancing with Encar), and having healthy delicious
food. What a memorable way to spend her 80th birthday.
Thanks also for the CDs (video and photos), my mom will
definitely watch this in Canada.
Sincerely,
Marie, Ricky, Raymund, Carla and Fama

The Visit – A Beautiful, Fulfilling Experience
By: Louie Eugenio-Steiner, HS’72
I
n February 2012, as part of our High
School Batch '72 Ruby Jubilee celebration, Baba Aro-Santos organized
several out-of-town, post-homecoming
"bonding activities". One of them was
a visit to St. Benedict’s Home (SBH),
home of the elderly sisters of SSC, located in Marikina, Rizal.
It was early morning of Tuesday,
February 14, two days after Homecoming day that we were scheduled to
make the visit. I was a little lazy and
sleepy, but I went with the group just
the same since I had already made
the commitment to join this activity.
It didn’t take long to get there but it
was for a reason. The days before that,
we had our hands full preparing for
our Homecoming leaving us very little
time to prepare for our visit. Arriving
in Marikina sooner than expected gave
us enough time to buy the props we
needed for the program and time to
practice our song number (take note,
while parked outside the gates of
SBH!). At exactly 10:00 am, the time
we were expected, we blew the horn
of our vehicles to let them know we
had arrived. At the door of the home
were some of the Sisters who gave us
such a warm welcome bringing back
memories of how it was back in school
during our growing years.
We were led to one of the
rooms where all the other sisters were
patiently waiting for us. Some were
in wheelchairs, some had minimal
mobility, but one thing I'll always remember -- the big smiles and joy in
all their faces when they saw us. Having been informed that the elderly sisters enjoy listening to visitors’ stories
of what they have become, we each
took time to introduce ourselves and
to let them into our lives. We danced
for them (doing a repeat of our dance
number which we performed on stage
two days beforehand), sang for them
(a song which we always sang in HS,
“You and I will travel far together…”),
danced with them (some of them embarrassed at first, but warmed up and
danced like pros), played games with
them and presented them with gifts.
It was like re-living the past for all of
us, both for us Batch HS’72 members
and the elderly sisters. We knew in
our hearts even before it was over
that every minute we spent with them
meant a lot. The Sisters thanked us,
with Sr. Waldy reciting the poem she
composed for us on the spot and with
them singing the Irish Blessing for us.
A very touching moment indeed.
With the program ending at
12:00 noon, caring that the Sisters
are, they invited us to join them for
lunch at their refectory. At this point,
while I was seated and getting ready to
eat, Sr. Benilda Maramba approached
me and asked if I was related to Lydia
Garcia-Eugenio. She obviously noticed
my name tag reading: Louie EugenioSteiner. I said "yes", she's my mother!
What a small world!!! I knew I had a
relative who was a Benedictine nun,
but since we never met, we had no
clue how each other looked. We spent
the next few minutes reconnecting -what she remembers about my mom
and dad, and my sister who was her
"angel" when she made her vows.
We enjoyed the sumptuous meal
they had prepared, their company and
their ‘pabaon’ of freshly baked German cookies baked by Sr. Salvacion.
What more could we ask for?
As all good things come to an
end, we had to say our "goodbyes"
(a long one with lots of photo ops in
between) to go on with our separate
lives. I will always treasure the sense
of fulfillment this experience has given
me and will forever remember the precious look on the sisters’ faces. One
thing I know for sure, --- even if I was
lazy and sleepy that morning, I am so
happy I was part of the HS Batch '72
group that gave joy and happiness to
our elderly sisters who had devoted
their lives molding us into who we
have turned out to be -- strong and
independent women with God in the
center of our lives.

Valentine’s
Day Visit
By: Pielle Ledda-Howell, HS’72
A
Valentine's Day visit to the
retired nuns in SSC Marikina
was a good way for me
to represent four generations of
Scholasticans plus three boys of
Sr Gratia. It was a way of giving in
return and saying 'thank you' to our
former teachers and mentors.
As we entered, one could feel
how peaceful it was to live there
and we felt very welcome at once.
Together we laughed, sang, danced,
played games and recalled our many
childhood memories - happy ones and
naughty times. To some of the unwell,
we gave words of encouragement
and support and helped feed them.
To see the delight on their faces
brought joy to our hearts. In return,
we received 'a blessing' - a truly
moving experience, that brought
tears to our eyes. After dining with
them and posing for photos, it was
difficult to bid our 'goodbyes.'
As Sansan rightly put it, this
visit was the highlight of our Ruby
Jubilee celebration. I was so happy
to have postponed my flight back.
I would have missed this touching
experience with the nuns. They
were the ones who helped instill
our values, who helped shape us to
be what we are now, who make us
proud to be Scholasticans!

Poem by Sr. Waldy
PARA SA MGA ALUMNI NA NAGDATINGAN NGAYONG
PISTA NI ST. SCHOLASTICA

Friedenshaus
Hotel School
By: Dean Remedios Ching
O
n the 26th day of July in the year of our Lord 2012,
on the Feast of Saints Joachim and Ann, a German
festive mood was in the air as people gathered
outside the main door of the “House of Peace” along
Estrada corner Leon Guinto Streets. Every one was eagerly
awaiting the blessing of Friedenshaus that afternoon. For
many of the guests, it was to be their first time to see the
interiors of the hotel.
A Beautiful liturgy prepared by Sr. Isabel Orito, OSB
(Institutional Campus Minister of SSC Manila) began with
“lesung aus de Benediktusregel, Die Aufnahme der Gaste”
(a reading from the Rule of St. Benedict, “on the Reception
of Guests”).
At Exactly 2pm, the blessing rites started. Sr. Lydia
Villegas, OSB, Sub-Prioress of the Missionary Benedictine
Sisters of the Manila Priory and Sr. Mary Thomas Prado,
OSB, President of SSC, Manila cut the ribbon. Thereafter,
Fr. Rudy Horst, SVD (a German priest from the Christ the
King Seminary) led the rites with the blessing of the Main
door.
The Friedenshuas is a German word meaning
“friendship house”. The property is a refurbished 4 storey
building originally known as the Salvacion Apartments, and
later, as Le Grand Maison. In the 90’s, De La Salle University
acquired the property and for more than 10 years, it was
home to the DLSU Press at the ground floor while the upper
floors accommodated visiting professors and guests. In the
early 2000, St. Scholastica’s College bought the property
from DLSU and named it Friedenshaus.
As part of the 10-Year Campus Development plan
of St. Scholastica’s College president, Sr. Mary Thomas
Prado, Friedenshaus was converted into a hotel school.
The hotel is open to the public for accommodation, dining,
conferences and other services. It also serves as an incampus practicum venue for students taking BS Hotel and
Restaurant Management.
Guests were not disappointed when they finally got
a look at the hotel. The first floor lobby is small and cozy.
Café Cyrilla, the coffee shop, offers an ala carte menu
and daily lunch special. It is open daily from 6:30am to
10:00pm serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also on the
ground floor are a gym, a travel desk, a laundry, an internet
café, and an art exhibit area inside the café.
Off the lobby are two private quarters for the use of
the Benedictine sisters and their guests.

Friedenshaus is a boutique hotel, with 17 beautifully
furnished guest rooms on the 3rd floor. No two guests room are
exactly alike-bathroom tiles, color scheme, headboard, lamps,
curtains, even bed sheets are different in each room. There is
however, a distinctive unifying them that is present in all the
rooms, that of the Benedictine symbol of Peace, the dove.
The second floor boasts of two conference rooms named
after two great women in Philippine history: Corazon C. Aquino
(first woman President of the Philippines) and Cecilia MuñozPalma (first woman Justice of the Philippine Supreme Court),
both Scholasticans. An intimate bar, a spa and a banquet hall
that can accommodate 200 people are also located on the
second floor.
Ballsy Aquino-Cruz and Viel Aquino-Dee (daughters of
Cory Aquino) and Ms. Pearl Palma-Cardema(daughter of Justice
Palma) and Emily Palma (granddaughter of Justice Palma and
Executive Director of Justice Palma Foundation) cut the ribbon
to the conference rooms.
The fourth floor is for the exclusive use of SSC staff and
students. There are 12 private rooms and 2 dormitories on the
4th floor.
Guests during the blessing included Sisters of the different
neighboring communities – Priory House, St. Benedict’s Home,
Marikina, St. Scholastica’s Center for Spirituality, Tagaytay
and St. Scholastica’s Academy, San Fernando; Mrs. Elenita
Sandejas, representing her husband; Dr. Jose Sandejas, SSC
BOT Chairperson, BOT member, Abbot Tarcisio Narciso, OSB
of the Abbey of Montserrat, Mendiola and Bro. Bernardo Oca of
Dela Salle University; from the Diplomatic Corps – Mrs. Nguyen
Tran Linh, wife of the Ambassador of Vietnam (whose daughter
is in Grade 7 at SSC, Manila); Mr. R. Toto Waspodo, Minister
of Social and Cultural Section of the Embassy of Indonesia;
Mrs. Timmerman, wife of the Charges d’ Affairs of the German
Embassy accompanied by the wife of the embassy’s Cultural
Attache; Ambassador Mercy Tuason; Justice Adolf Azcuna and
his daughter Bea, Ms. Cynthia Carreon, Chairperson of the
Philippine Olympic Committee and President of the Gymnastics
Association of the Philippines, Ms. Selene Yu, PAX Awardee
2012 and Executive Director of Chevrolet Philippines, parents,
alumnae, faculty, employees and other friends.
As friends and guests toured the hotel and helped
themselves to a sumptuous buffet, they were serenaded by the
students of the School of Music.
Aside from the hotel and
food and beverage operation,
Friedenshaus will also offer short
courses in hospitality operations and
management to the public. It also
accepts arrangement fro practicum
for students from other HEIs. For

ovember 10, 2012, 1pm —
SSAFI’s call for class reps meeting.
I heeded the call to meet, and
Bang’s request to wear something blue
to what I thought was an honest-togoodness meeting. Because our moribund and decimated AB 1953 class
would be Diamond Jubilarians next
homecoming and I wanted to know
how we would present a musical
number to the Scholastican audience
when we are only six survivors left
here.
On arriving, first a beso for the
new SSAFI Moderator, Sr. Angelica.
In my mind, poor Sister, she’ll have
to contend with board members who
could make emotions rule over reason
in sensitive issues during the meeting.
Well, what for is a moderator? Then,
pleasant surprise, Sister Mary John
Manansan! Me: Sister, I read the item
about your sojourn in Scotland and
Ireland. Do they still speak Gaelic
there? She: did you read those about
Russia, Ionia and other places?
She was the opener of the socalled meeting where she revealed
that the Benedictine Sisters are establishing a hospital for the poorest of
the poor in some God-forsaken place
in Northern Samar. She is, of course,
spear-heading it.
In their spade work, she also revealed miracles that could only be...
yes, miracles. Without a title to a piece
of land in the town of Catarman, Samar, they looked for a site there. A
landowner, learning of their mission,
donated 3 ½ hectares for the purpose.
But there were other problems, foremost among which was money for the
construction of the hospital. The country president of Hyundai Asia read
about the Most Influential Women in
the World. Included in the honourable list were Hillary Clinton, Oprah
Whitney and Sister Mary John Manansan, OSB, among others. She called
for Sister to her office and made out a
company pledge to donate. It turned
out that Madam President is a Scholastican. A scholar in our school, too poor
then to have an adequate allowance,
she would hang around the kitchen of
the “manongs” for a cup of hot soup!
She handed Sister a company pledge
to donate to her project, but to Sister’s
dismay, the pledge did not state the
amount. So she asked Atty. Lorna (Kapunan, I suppose) for an explanation.
Because, attorney said, the amount
would depend on the entire cost of the
hospital construction. If that were said
to me, I would have staggered out of
the Hyundai Philippines offices in pure
elation!
Still, money was needed for 2 mobile clinics cum ambulances to reach
the far-off places accessible by motorized transport. Where to get the substantial amount? An unsolicited donation of more than a hundred thousand
Euros came from a generous Frenchman. The vehicles are now in the St.
Scho motor pool.
Finally, we got to the make-up
portion of the afternoon. Loyan asked
for two volunteers for the demonstration by L’Oreal make-up artists. Diffidently I stood up to volunteer. With
some embarrassment over my audacity,
I told my young audience that I wanted
them to witness another miracle in the
reversal of my looks from an artifact of
81 to a refreshing 18.
First, the cleaning. My artist must
have used something with alcohol content. I could smell and feel it. My heart
started beating erratically as an allergic
reaction to alcohol. I thought to myself that if I conked out right there and
then because of make-up, my daughter would never forgive me for embarrassing her at my wake! So, unknown
to them, I popped in a Claritin tablet
and in a minute or two the allergy was
gone. On with the process.
First, apply with a moist sponge
or by finger the primer, then the foundation. Always see to it that your foundation and powder match the color of
your neck to avoid that mask look. Follow it with the blush on, lipstick that
harmonized with your blush on, then
the light brown eye shadow for the
morning look and eye liner. Mascara
to open the eyes if they are quite small
and clipped artificial eyelashes glued
only on the middle of your own lashes. All with the use of special brushes.
I skipped the artificial lashes. How
much are the products? Visit their outlets.
While no miracle happened on
my face, I enjoyed the whole experience. With a minute of fame, the two
models posed for pictures at right, left
and other angles.
We did not go home empty
handed. Each attendee was given sample tubes of L’Oreal products. SSAFI
served a yummy merienda prepared
by our HRM students who are on
practicum at the Friedenshaus, now
operational as a hotel and restaurant
wholly owned by St. Scho. This must
be its answer to La Salle’s nearby St.
Benilde. And long-stemmed red roses
for each lady. Lastly, a special bonus
of comedy songs and acts by our own
Mitch Valdes.
So next time you answer a SSAFI
call for a meeting, don’t be just loyal
to our school. Have a little ulterior motive and think of the loot available for
you. If you can’t resist instant gratification, you can enjoy it there. If you are
more reined in, wait till you get home.
Some shared their L’Oreal tubes with
their daughters.

The SSAFI Card offers the the advantage of an alumnae card with benefits and formalizes the support that you,
as an alumna, give to your alumnae organization and via SSAFI, your school - St. Scholastica's College Manila.
Most non-profit organizations survive because of the support of their members. The collection of alumnae dues
(during homecoming) and SSAFI Card fees from new members/renewals contributes to the operational viability
and existence of SSAFI. So please support SSAFI so SSAFI can support you!
