LESSON ONE
LESSON TWO
Use in a sentence: “The French Paradox”
Starting the day off right for me always means
a good, hard run. Keeps me sane, especially
on the road.
French women would not be caught dead wearing
sneakers and sweats in public – quelle horreur!
MON ONGLES
(My Nails)
Long pointed almonds with
extended nail beds in a creamy,
femme pink. An undertone
of silvery shimmer, and
crystal clear tips embedded
with flickers of blue-green
holographic cello.
The shapes were extreme and
arched...I felt like I was wearing
the most fabulous over-the-top
pair of Louboutin stilettos on
my fingertips!
Liza Smith from London created
these wonders…they even
captured the approving glances
of the front row set!
LESSON ThrEE
Compare and contrast:
New York: Fashion shows are held in tents,
like the circus.
Paris: I attend my first Paris fashion show of the
season at the Louvre, the most important museum
in the Western world, built in 1546 (not a typo).

JASMINE DE MILO – The pop of corks – and
real champagne (legally, champagne can only
be made in France, you know) sets the scene
at the Paris Ritz for this elegant private show.
LOUIS VUITTON where every detail is
scrutinized and set like a perfect diamond into
a priceless setting.
GIAMBATTISTA VALLI where innocence turns
savage. The models in “Little Red Riding Hood”
mode literally eat the Big Bad Wolf during on
stage theatrics.

ANTONIO BERARDI – Fierce women know their

commanding, these Alpha Females are always

And the night at the JOHN GALLIANO show
really made me feel the fashion in my cells. I felt
my DNA morphing as I breathed it in. Fashion as

LESSON FOur
Winging west to the sunny SoCal beach-town
I call home, where cut-offs, flip flops and a cute
cotton hoodie are considered appropriate dinner
attire most of the time, I felt giddy. Maybe it
was the tickly memories of the champagne.
To feel welcomed as part of what truly is an
ancient culture. To be embraced so warmly by
such strict, Old World taskmasters, and to have
OUR art form as nail professionals understood,
acknowledged and respected.
CND en Paris -- c’est magnifique!
My first day begins with a yummy treat which IS low-carb:
The International Herald Tribune, gleaming in a glossy
armour of glorious four-color photography. In Paris,
fashion, like all of life itself, is pure art.

Fine tailoring and finished shapes fit for the hunt and the ride. Beginning
with the natty look of menswear, then seeking pure sensation. Forbidden
furs caress bare skin against winter chill, and trophy feathers reach for
the skies from which they fell. The body preens to find itself in classic form,
sharpened by narrow jackets and skirts that gleam with metal. Worn with
a bit of royal grandeur, and anything but common.

Unburdened and exquisite. She’s arrived from the pure ether, a creature
visualized from an unnamed element. Luxury throws off its heavy wraps,
and excess seems unwelcome: new-generation cashmeres and subtly rich

cloudy pastels with the fine texture and geometry of frost on a windowpane.
Gray and taupe alight on fingertips as gently as doves.

11.
There is talk this season about “fashion nuns” with sober
black garments defining the runway uniform. The big
news is that the “It” bag is passé – time to eBay yours.
But the more interesting angle is that small, subtle
touches matter more than ever.
1. PEAK YOUR INTEREST with a finely feathered
topper, equal parts Robin Hood and Rat Pack fedora.
2. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER but monster gems
are so right now, the bigger and faker the better.
3. HANDS DOWN, brilliantly hued, butter-soft gloves
draw attention to your digits.
4. LONG STORY SHORT: Keep your mini on ice
until further notice as hemlines dip.
5. LOSE YOUR TWEEZERS for a while as Wild Child
brows rule.
6. LONG, DARK NIGHTS call for the longest,
darkest nails of the year.
7. STEP UP to the newly fearless shoe, especially
superhigh platforms.
8. GRRRRRRR: the savage new take on furs ain’t
your mama’s mink. And of course we recommend “faux.”

First Looks. Every fashion show has its rhythm; before the legions of
press, buyers and celebrities file into seats, the best in their fields – from
nails, hair and makeup, to styling, designing, photography and trend
reporting – cluster into tight quarters backstage to get the models and
the clothes photo ready. CND’s team raced to manicure and pedicure
models at nearly 100 fashion shows in New York, London and Paris.

Q:
The trick to a perfect-looking and
long-lasting manicure is in the preparation
and control during application. Here are
some “tips” that may make your Nail
Professional jealous.
From run-way to real-way in a
salon near you.
How can I find the perfect
enamel for my skin tone?
A:
Roxanne US
Designers don’t settle anymore for the
basic color palette of reds, corals and pinks.
They rely on our expert technique to customize
color, sometimes to match fabrics, accessories
or even lip color. You can DIY too!
Anything but basic, the new neutral is gray.
You can customize gray to best complement
your skin tone. It’s fast and easy and only requires
2 base colors: Voodoo (patent leather black),
Cream Puff (full-coverage white) then 1 drop
of Hot Pop Yellow or Hot Pop Blue to customize
perfectly to your skin tone!
+
1/2 bottle
Cream Puff
Urban Gray
Start by pouring Cream Puff into an empty
bottle until half way full.
• Add 2-3 drops of Voodoo. Shake until fully blended.
• Add additional drops of Voodoo for a darker
shade or a few more drops of white for a
paler version.
• Add 1 drop of Hot Pop Yellow to warm the gray
or 1 drop of Hot Pop Blue to cool the gray.
Lighter or cooler skin tones look best in pale,
cool shades of gray. Darker or warmer skin
tones can handle extra richness with just a drop
of warmth.

It takes forever for my enamel to dry.
Any tricks?
I love the look of rich dark color on my
nails for fall, but I find it difficult to get
it on perfectly. Any tips?
A:
A:
Cherie Australia
Our backstage pro’s know all about the essence
of time and can’t bear to wait for nails to dry! We
sometimes have only 5 minutes to perfect all 20 digits
for showtime, so we rely on a secret weapon: CND’s
SolarSpeed Spray™. It not only dries enamel fast,
but conditions cuticles with a rich blend of Jojoba Oil,
Vitamin E and Sweet Almond Oil. This is always a hit
backstage.
First: Manicure and clean nails thoroughly.
Q:
Then: Apply one thin coat of Stickey™
Base Coat and let dry for the
best adhesion.
A:
Why do my nails seem to look better in the
summer months, and chip in the fall and winter?
It’s a proven fact that nails grow faster
in the summer months. Nails require a
delicate balance of oil and moisture. When
the temperature drops, the moisture in the air
drops, causing nails and skin to dry out. This
explains why nails tend to become more brittle
in fall and winter. A daily beauty must-have is
SolarOil. ™ This blend of Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E,
Rice Bran and Sweet Almond Oil deposits the
right amount of flexibility your nails need to
keep them chip-free in any season.
The added benefit – cuticles behave!
For enamel application:
Start in the right position: Prop the
manicure hand on a phone book or a
stack of fashion magazines and rest the
“working” hand on the table. This will
steady your hand and allow the brush
to remain parallel during application.
Dip the brush into the enamel, (a dark
color, such as Fedora) wipe off excess
from one side. (Using too much enamel
on the brush can flood the nails and
cause seeping into the cuticle area
and surrounding skin.
Definitely NOT professional!)
=
2-3 drops
Voodoo
Q:
Q:
How can I make my short, chubby fingers
look longer and leaner?
A:
Begin with the brush “parallel” to your
nail and place it to the center of the nail.
“Slide” the brush up to the cuticle
(but not on), and “glide” it down to
the free edge.
Amanda UK
Continue to “slide and glide” around
the left and right sides using your
other fingers to pull the sides of your
skin away.
You can take “pounds” off your hands by
changing the shape from a short square nail
to a longer soft almond. This season’s dramatic
shapes show a little more length. This illusion
can have a lengthening effect on hands and
look more natural. In fact, this shape is
stronger and can absorb more impact when
filed correctly.
Here’s how:
Begin by filing straight across from side to side.
Gently rock the file underneath the nail at a 45°
angle so the shape begins to soften.
Repeat this process for the best
coverage. Be sure to “seal” free edges
to increase wearability.
For longer nails and a more dramatic shape,
file corners evenly from corner to center. Just
make sure to leave sidewalls intact for the
needed strength.
For a bulletproof, super high-gloss
shine, finish with one coat of
Air Dry Top Coat.
It’s like Spanx for your hands!

In the land down under, seasons are reversed. But for
our Aussie nailistas, summer is more than sandy
beaches and shrimp on the barbie. In 17 runway shows,
the sunny Oz team created deliciously dark nails (16 of
the 17 shows used tips!) that would be equally at home
in Manhattan or Montmartre. Once upon a time, Australia
seemed like its own remote planet. Today, nail trends
create a global fashion heartbeat we all share.
