"FalseCensus Entries" - According to Arlene Eakle, Ph.D., "padding the totes,"
or adjusting the census for political reasons, was not uncommon. "Frontier
areas, anxious for statehood, often added bogus names. In 1857, seven
counties in Minnesota had wild population totals, complete with fake names on
schedules. Jurisdictions facing increased taxes might also understate their
population to keep overall per capita taxes lower. The 1880 Utah census juggled
households to disguise polygamy at a time when federal officials were seeking
evidence for the prosecution of those convicted of unlawful cohabitation." The

"[Thanksgiving] as founded be th' Puritans to give thanks
f'r bein' presarved fr'm th' Indyans, an' we keep it to give thanks we are preserved
fr'm th' Puritans." Finley Peter Dunne, "Thanksgiving," Mr. Dooley's Opinions

5. Bill Dunn (bill1 [email protected]) - has been researching Dunn's for over thirty
years. Because Bill's response to the questionnaire sent to each new subscriber
is unique, his family line and related summation is presented below.
6.
r=>
Jo (Dunn) Sheppard (rb [email protected])
7. Glennda ([email protected]) - is researching for ancestors of John H.
Dun.n bn Mar 1854 in Shullsburg, Lafayette Co., WI and died 1927 in Los
Angeles CA. John married Adelaide White, dau of John Henry White and Mary
Daykin, in WI in 1876. Adelaide was bn 1856, Lafayette Co., WI and died 1898
in Marcus IA. John was the son of James Dunn and Mary Sullivan. James bn
1824, in Waterford Co., Ireland and died in Lafayette Co, WI in 1899. Mary bn
1827 in Waterford Co., Ireland, died 1921 in Mitchell, SO. Glennda believes
James' parents were Pat Dunn and Bridget ?

'9.
Roslyn ([email protected]) - has Dunns in Northampton, PA, VA,
KY, IN and possibly IL. James Dunn from Ireland was father of Samuel Fowler
Dunn and grandfather of Williamson Dunn. Samuel married a Brewster sister
. and is buried at Indiana University in Southern Indiana.
10. Denise ([email protected]) -is another Kentucky researcher and interests
focus on Garrard Co.
11·. (Ajp22397) - who admits to being new to Genealogy, lists Butler and Logan
Co., KY as region of research.

to Dunns in Ireland, especially Ulster. James Dunn, born 1720 in Ireland, served
3 yrs in revolution, had six sons that served and they all survived.
is searching for information on
her mother, Hattie Virginia Miller who was born in Red Oak, OK 1912-1916.
Hattie's parents may be Benjamin Frankin Miller and "Becky" Dunn. Hattie's
sibling were Everett and Alonzo. She would appreciate any information on this
family.

17. Ann Rawlins ([email protected])
joined us last month has shared her
Dunn interest. She is trying to locate family of her gggrandfather, William Dunn,
who appeared in the Trigg Co., KY census. The census lists William's placeof
birth as TN, however, her ggrandfather's death certificate reports William as bn in
.IL. She is also researching Christian and Caldwell Co., KY; Stewart,
Montgomery, and Robertson Co., TN and VA.
18. Don Haymond ([email protected])
is researching Silas and Louisa M.
· Dunnfamily of GA, Benton Co., AL and Comanche Co., TX. He has located
Silas on the 1840 and 1850 Benton Co., AL census. There is John Dunn in the
same area as early as 1820, who is'the right age to be Silas' father; along with
Barney, William and John Jr. who could be brothers although he had not been
able to find any supporting evidence. When Silas migrated to Comanche Co.,
TX, he settled east of the town of Comanche, at Cora, near a community later
known as Hasse. Several Dunn descendants are buried in the Sardis Cemetery
at Hasse, TX.
19. Gail (Dunn) Bisey ([email protected])
- is another KY researcher and
lists Breckinridge, Hardin, Grayson, Meade, Hancock and Ohio Counties of
interest. She is also searching records in White Co., TN, SC and VA. Her gr-grgrandfather, Eli Dunn served in the Civil War; while his brother Ben, somewhat
served, is listed as a "deserter."

20. Bill Dunn's Family Line -
.~
Itis very interesting to me, to see how many different lines of Dunn there
• are. Aslsee it, prior to 1800, they came to New England, New York, New'
Jersey, Philadelphia and Virginia from England, Scotland and Ireland. All
separate lines .
My line is documented back to William, Sr. (b 1669 Old Rappahannock Co,
Virginia, d 1731 Essex Co. VA). He is reported to be the son of the immigrant,
Thomas (b 1606 England). Who came to Virginia as a 14 year old indentured

servant to Sir George Yeardley, Governor of Virginia in 1620. Several sources
say that William'was a son of this Thomas and I am seeking proof of the
relationship ..
William, Sr. had 5 sons and 5 daughters and by the mid 1700's there were
over ZoDunns in Essex Co. VA. It seems most of his descendants stayed iri the
area or went South. Two of his great grandsons, Edmund and Julius Spencer,
moved to Warren Co. Kentucky in about 1800. Julius Spencer's son, William
Henry married P.hebe Thompson in 1821 and they settled in Boone Co.
Missouri. I have found very few connections to this line and would very much like
to find other connections .
. Always looking for more documented information. I hope the above is not too
wordy and I willprovide documentation if anyone is interested.
