2 | BCWA ACTIVITY REPORT 2009
MESSAGE
It has been an eventful 2009! I’m proud to say that we have
recorded numerous milestones in 2009.
This was the year that Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA)
launched its very own website, increased its staff strength to cater
to its growing needs and introduced the New Patient Education
session for newly diagnosed patients and above all the transition
from a Klang Valley based Association to a national Association.
Yes, BCWA is now known as BCWA Malaysia. This was also the
year that BCWA carried out the Inaugural Jamuan Teh Malaysia
(JAM), a tri-partnership with the Australian High Commission and
National Cancer Society Malaysia. It is heartening to know that
there is greater awareness on cancer and the early detection of
breast cancer based on the response that we received for JAM.
Volunteers at BCWA were hard pressed indeed to accommodate
the numerous requests to carry out Breast Self Familiarisation
Workshops throughout the year particularly during Pink October
month.
Patron
Puan Sri Datin Seri Dato’ Akmal Abdul Salam D.I.M.P.
Being a Patron to BCWA for more than four years has been a great journey with its share of sadness, joy and
heartwarming experiences. The journey has been even more worthwhile as I have the blessings and support from
my family with regards to my involvement in BCWA. As I feel blessed, I am also saddened by the fact that not every
woman out there has the support from their spouse, family, friends and community at large. There is still prevalent
amongst us the social stigma that a woman who has lost her breast to breast cancer has lost part of her femininity
and is not quite a whole woman. There is a lot more that needs to be done to enhance public understanding of
breast cancer and the attendant issues and problems faced by a newly diagnosed patient.
The public at large need to change their mindset and be more supportive towards breast cancer survivors. A
more open attitude towards breast cancer could encourage women living with breast cancer to come out and
relate their experience and provide support for those that are about to start their breast cancer journey. This is in
fact the main thrust of BCWA, where a survivor uses her experience to help another woman during her diagnosis,
treatment and recovery from breast cancer.
I hope to work with the team at BCWA to slowly change the perception of the Malaysian public in understanding
breast cancer, to alleviate fear that breast cancer is a death sentence and to be more vocal in supporting this
worthwhile cause. Women, be it wife, mother, sister, friend or even neighbour, figure prominently in everyone’s
lives. They are the bedrock of human existence and the nurturing and dependable force in every household. I urge
members of the public to come forward and support each and every woman in their live and let the woman know
that you care and will be there for them when they need it the most.
Breast cancer affects all Malaysians in some way, either directly or through someone you know closely
therefore, everyone can make a difference no matter how small the act in supporting this cause.
I look forward to a more eventful and meaningful 2010!

MESSAGE
… our greatest strength lies in the
contribution of our patrons and
technical advisors, staff members
and volunteers, as well as the
executive committee members
President
Ranjit Kaur AMP
All organisations count upon the contribution of their people as their greatest strength. Similarly, in
BCWA, our greatest strength lies in the contribution of our patrons and technical advisors, staff members
and volunteers, as well as the executive committee members. It is the exceptional contribution of time
and effort of each of these individuals that makes the Association so special. Our volunteers have
worked tirelessly, to create an environment of good governance and management.
In 2009, we experienced changes for the better. On the office front we have strengthened our staff
structure and numbers led by our Executive Director, Miss Jothy T. Govindan. Existing and new
partnerships and collaboration locally and internationally now enable us to spread the word on early
detection and also to continue to improve the quality of life for women with breast cancer.
The launch of the Association’s website created an avenue for virtual connectivity and a link in relation
to information, announcements and news regarding breast cancer issues and the Association’s
development.
Our response to changing demands in supportive care prompted us to introduce the New Patient
Education sessions where newly diagnosed women gain useful information and knowledge to face the
many challenges through the treatment and recovery process.
We look forward to continue serving the community through our supportive care and public education
programmes.
Wishing all members and well wishers good health and happiness for 2010.

ACTIVITIES OF BCWA
Support for Women with Breast Cancer
PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT
Individual Psychosocial Support
The Patient Support team consists of breast cancer
survivors who are trained to provide psychosocial or
emotional support to help individuals with breast cancer
and their loved ones cope with life during and after
diagnosis and treatment. Individual psychosocial support
is offered in face-to-face sessions, through telephone
and email.
Patient Support Team volunteers visit patients in
government and private hospitals regularly. They meet
newly diagnosed patients, just before or after surgery, to
help them and their families cope emotionally, mentally
and physically with diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
During the first visit, each patient is given a Comfy Kit
which contains a temporary prosthesis (if needed), a
stress ball, publications and a small carry bag.
When the Comfy Kit was first launched in early 2004,
it contained only a breast prosthesis, a stress ball and
two publications entitled “Breast Cancer: How to Cope”
and “We Have Breast Cancer Too.” But now, the number
of publications has increased and they are available in
three languages, namely, English, Bahasa Malaysia and
Chinese. The titles currently available are as follows:•

6 | BCWA ACTIVITY REPORT 2009
At present, the hospitals visited by the Patient Support
Team volunteers include University Malaya Medical
Centre (UMMC), University Malaya Specialist Centre
(UMSC), University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical
Centre (UKMMC), Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), Pantai
Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Hospital Sg Buloh. Doctors
from other government and private hospitals also refer
their patients to BCWA for psychosocial support.
The Patient Support Team volunteers also manage
distress calls from individuals affected by breast cancer. In
2009 BCWA attended to 755 telephone calls, reached out
to 552 breast cancer patients in hospitals and responded
to 152 distress calls from all over the country.
Most of the queries from calls and hospital visits include
the following:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Uncertainty in breast cancer
Emotional distress
Diet and nutrition
Exercise
Care after surgery
Chemotherapy
Radiotherapy
Prosthesis and its use
Coping strategies
Surviving cancer is hard, but bouncing back to normal
life after cancer is even harder. The Patient Support Team
volunteers make every effort to help women cope with
their emotional and psychological distress which often
accompanies a cancer diagnosis. In this regard, we
engaged an intern counsellor (since September 2009)
to offer counselling services on Mondays and third
Saturdays. During his 15-week attachment with BCWA,
the counsellor had over 12 consultations with breast
cancer patients, including some with family members in
face-to-face sessions and over the phone.
ACTIVITIES OF BCWA
Support for Women with Breast Cancer
Group Psychosocial Support
Therapeutic social and support activities are organised to
help women with breast cancer cope and deal with their
treatment and recovery, and eventually take control of their
lives again. In these sessions, irrespective of educational,
ethnic and social background, women with breast cancer
are able to benefit from mutual support, fellowship and
information on managing oneself.
Group Sharing Sessions
Group sharing sessions are held at 2:30pm on the
third Saturday of each month where women and their
families can seek solutions through mutual exchange of
experiences and information on personal concerns and
issues. These sessions facilitate a sense of camaraderie
among the survivors where each newly diagnosed woman
is able to get comfort, encouragement and reassurance
from her peers. They also enable survivors to make
new friends and continue their friendship outside the
Association.
The common issues discussed at the “New Patient
Education Sessions” are:
• Fear of treatment and concerns regarding the
uncertainty in life after breast cancer
• Breast reconstruction
• Dietary concerns
• Complementary therapies
• Alternative treatment
• Self and public image
• Breaking the cancer news to other family
members including children
A total of 244 women with breast cancer attended the
Group Sharing Sessions in 2009.

Education session

New Patient Education Sessions
The Executive Committee decided to expand BCWA’s
services by introducing the “New Patient Education
Session” which commenced in July 2009. It resembles
an informal conversation on a one-to-one basis with a
newly diagnosed woman together with or without her
family members, and a Patient Support Team volunteer.
The patient is encouraged to ask questions on coping
and managing herself through breast cancer and making
lifestyle choices.
The privacy of the “New Patient Education Sessions”
enables the newly diagnosed woman to be at ease and
to express her feelings without any inhibition. In return,
the volunteers are able to identify and address issues that
really matter to the woman. Without the time limitation
the New Patient Education Sessions allows the facilitation
of quality counselling sessions. Subsequently, the newly
diagnosed woman joins the Group Sharing Session
when she is ready. Joining the Group Sharing session is
symbolic of the decision to take a step forward.
A total of 15 individuals have attended the New Patient
Education Sessions since September 2009.

NON-MEDICAL AIDS
Prostheses
BCWA offers free temporary prostheses of different sizes
to women who have had a mastectomy (removal of the
whole breast) before they are ready to be fitted with a
silicone prosthesis. The temporary prosthesis which is
inserted in the bra to maintain the shape of the breast,
is included in the Comfy Kit. The feather-light weight and
softness of the temporary prosthesis gives better comfort
especially when the chest may still be sore after surgery
and during/after radiotherapy. However, the temporary
prosthesis is not ideal for long term use as it can go outof-shape easily and it is too light to maintain appropriate
posture. Wearing an ill fitting and ultra light prosthesis can
eventually lead to back problems.
Better designed and heavier fibre prostheses are sewn by
volunteers and offered at a minimum cost for women who
cannot afford the silicone prostheses. These are made of
either fibre or resin, or a combination of the two. A total
of 544 prostheses were distributed out in Comfy Kits to
breast cancer patients whilst 387 permanent prostheses
were sold to breast cancer patients and survivors
throughout 2009.
3
All prostheses available in BCWA are designed and
stitched by the volunteers of the Thimble Thumb Team.
The Thimble Thumb Team (TTT) gets together every
Tuesday to design and sew fibre prostheses, give advice
on modification of bras and help women with the fitting
of both. TTT volunteers also practice their sartorial skills
by designing and making casserole holders, pot holders,
bags and other useful household items that are sold to
raise funds for BCWA.
BCWA also provides mastectomy bras at an affordable
price and offers advice on modification to existing bras to
accommodate the prostheses. A total of 399 mastectomy
bras were sold in 2009.
As a result of a donation of RM20,000 from Pantai
Hospital Kuala Lumpur in October 2008, BCWA launched
a prosthesis and mastectomy bra subsidy programme to
supply bras and prostheses to breast cancer survivors
from the lower income group. Candidates are identified
by BCWA Patient Support Volunteers, nurses from the
hospitals and prosthesis suppliers. One should see the
surprise on the face of the newly diagnosed women when
they are informed that they have been selected for this
program. Some are even drawn to tears of gratitute when
being fitted with the prosthesis and bra.
BCWA also works closely with commercial suppliers of
prostheses and mastectomy bras to enable woman to
get good quality items.

Wigs
Women undergoing chemotherapy generally experience
temporary hair loss, in which case a woman may choose
to wear a wig. BCWA gives out wigs on loan so that
breast cancer survivors need not be burdened with the
additional cost of purchasing this expensive hairpiece.
Wigs are loaned out to survivors for eight months up to
a year, or more at times. In order to ensure BCWA has
sufficient wigs and taking into consideration the wear
and tear, BCWA replenishes its stock of wigs every year
from suppliers who specialise in making wigs for cancer
patients. Used wigs that are in good condition are also
accepted from donors.
BCWA loaned out a total of 60 wigs in 2009.
Reading Material
A library of reading and audio visual materials covering
information ranging from guidelines to narrations and
rehabilitation are available in BCWA. Interested individuals
are encouraged to visit the library and benefit from the
abundance of educational and reference materials.
In 2009, BCWA obtained permission from the Cancer

BENEFIT FINDING
Dragon boat paddling for women living with breast cancer
was introduced to BCWA in February 2005. Often breast
cancer survivors are advised to avoid strenuous exercises
and to refrain from activities requiring repetitive upper arm
movements.
Dragon boat paddling for women with a history of breast
cancer started in 1996 as a result of a Canadian study to
test the belief that repetitive upper body exercise in those
treated for breast cancer reduces the risk of developing
lymphoedema, a swelling of the arm and chest area that
may develop after lymph node surgery and radiation
therapy.
Carefully monitored throughout training, paddlers showed
marked improvement in both physical and mental health,
several reported improved range of motion of their
shoulders and no increase in the risk of lymphoedema.
To our paddlers, facing the waves of the sea and pushing
through the resistance of the water are synonymous with
overcoming their battle with breast cancer, to give hope
and strength to those currently battling the disease, and
to signify the ability to bounce back and to lead vibrant
and active lives after the physical and emotional trauma.
Dragon Boat Paddling - Pink Challengers
The Pink Challengers, the first Dragon Boat Paddling
Team in Malaysia comprising breast cancer survivors was
formed by BCWA in 2005. The Pink Challengers practice
on weekends and participate in national and international
races. The team stands by the theme “Paddle for
Courage, Strength and Change”, giving support and
encouragement to those who are in the “same boat,”
10 | BCWA ACTIVITY REPORT 2009
journeying through breast cancer diagnosis, treatment
and recovery and, at the same time, demonstrating that
there is indeed a meaningful and fulfilling life even after
cancer. The key message that the Pink Challengers aim
to bring to the public at large is “With early detection and
timely treatment, one stands a chance to continue to live
a normal and active life” thereby changing the attitude of
the public towards breast cancer.
Penang Channel Challenge, 29 March 2009
In March 2009, the Pink Challengers took a bold challenge
to paddle across the 3.8 km stretch of the Penang Channel
from Bagan Ajam in Butterworth to the Tanjong City Marina
on the Penang Island. The feat, though completed in a
sheer 32 minutes, took lengthy preparations, planning,
training, networking, collaboration, and fundraising. Not
only did they need to keep the team in shape, but they
were also determined to drive home the message that,
“There is life after breast cancer”. With the support of the
local authorities, corporate companies, well-wishers and
friends, the Penang Channel Challenge became a proud
achievement for BCWA.
30th Penang International Dragon Boat Festival,
23 May 2009
With less than a two-month break, the Pink Challengers
sprung into action again by participating in the 500m
International Premier Race for the first time. Previously,
the team only took part in breast cancer survivor races.
Although the team did not win the race, participation in
itself was an achievement for this group of gutsy ladies.

races; at the inaugural Putrajaya International Dragon
Boat Festival, namely the International Breast Cancer
Survivors’ Race, Malaysia Ladies 22 Crew, Malaysia
Ladies 12 Crew, International Women 22 Crew and
2000m Putrajaya International Challenge. They emerged
second in the International Breast Cancer Survivors’
Race. Winning has never been a priority for the Pink
Challengers. It is the determination to reach out to the
public at large and to people who have been affected
by breast cancer, which enables the Pink Challengers to
strive to be “models of life and living”, full of grit, guts and
fun despite breast cancer.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Social activities, which also serve as informal therapeutic
sessions, have been well-received among members
of BCWA. The activities included craft sessions, self
improvement activities and, visits to places of interest and
culinary centres. Social activities which include survivors
and family members have been found to be mutually
beneficial, enabling the participants to spend quality time
with their family, and, at the same time, they can also
get to know the family members of other fellow survivors
better. Some of the numerous social activities attended by
BCWA members in 2009 are as follows:
5. Chu San receiving her lucky draw
prize from Puan Sri Dato’ Akmal
Look Good, Feel Better Workshop by Estee Lauder
Companies, 5 August 2009
Estee Lauder Companies has been organising beauty
makeover workshops annually for women with breast
cancer. This fun-filled confidence-building workshop
was well received in 2009, especially by those who were
actively receiving treatment and who had just completed
treatment. Looking good on the outside makes one feel
good internally. In addition, chemotherapy can cause the
skin to get dry and dull, with pigmentation and wrinkles
becoming more visible. The survivors learned skin care and
maintenance techniques. They were indeed very pleased
with the portrait they each took back and some even
commented that they looked better than their wedding
photographs. This activity clearly provided a boost in selfconfidence and self-esteem for 11 new survivors who
were transformed into magazine cover girls.
Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary Conservation Centre
and Deerland Park, Pahang, 26 August 2009
Also known as the orphanage for elephants, the Kuala
Gandah Elephant Sanctuary is steadily developing into
one of the must-visit tourist attractions in Malaysia. Keen
to explore this sanctuary, some 36 members and their
family and friends signed up for this trip. Besides being a
fun-filled event, it also served as an educational excursion
as visitors learned factual information about elephants,
the space conflict between human and wild elephants
and the importance of elephant conservation.

This elusive town attracted 40 members and their family
and friends to explore its hidden treasures. The Social
Activities Organiser, an avid traveller herself, came up with
an array of activities that left all participants satisfied at the
end of the trip. The activities included a visit to a birds’ nest
farm, an orchid farm, a paddy field, a mango orchard, and
some sightseeing at Bukit Melawati. The trip culminated
with a seafood feast in one of the fishing villages in Kuala
Selangor which left all participants full and satisfied.
Laughter Therapy, 21 November 2009
Laughing is therapeutic. Monti and Logi, famed for their
political satire, conducted a session on Laughter Therapy.
Some 31 members participated, just to be reminded
that laughter is the best medicine; Laughter triggers the
release of endorphins, the happy hormone, which makes
one feel good, besides acting as the body’s natural
painkiller. In fact, laughter therapy has been incorporated
as complementary therapy in cancer treatment in some
parts of the world.

Education is critical in changing behaviours regarding
early detection and timely treatment of breast
cancer. Public education programmes in the form of
exhibitions, talks and workshops are conducted in
different languages to educate the public on breast
health awareness, including topics like breast self
familiarisation, early detection of abnormal changes
in the breast and living with breast cancer. These
programmes are offered nationwide for all levels of
the community including residents’ associations,
service clubs, corporate companies, women’s groups,
educational institutions and religious congregations.
BCWA’s team of trained volunteers conduct public
education programmes as well as train-the-trainer
sessions. In 2009, BCWA’s team of
volunteers
delivered 45 presentations for more than 5,000
persons including girls, women and men of all ages.
The presentation covered breast health, ways to do
breast self familiarisation, adopting a healthy lifestyle
and sharing of survivors’ cancer journey. One such
event that requires special mention is Pink October,
the breast cancer awareness month where exhibitions
are organised jointly with Estee Lauder Companies
and other partners at public venues in the Klang Valley.
Educational materials pertaining to breast health are
displayed for public view.
BCWA’s public education materials on Breast Self
Familiarisation are printed in four languages, namely,
English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and Tamil and
distributed to the public and to other breast cancer
support groups in Malaysia. In 2009, 33,000 public
education materials on Breast Self Familiarisation were
distributed to the public.

We have Expanded!
BCWA is continuously seeking to extend its supportive
care services and creating greater awareness to a larger
segment of society in Malaysia. This mission is now
possible with the recent approval on BCWA’s name change
by the Registrar of Societies. The Association which was
previously known as Breast Cancer Welfare Association
of Federal Territory and Selangor is now officially renamed Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia. The
Association hopes to make greater strides in creating a
more breast health conscious society in Malaysia.

2009. The website not only aims to promote breast health
but it also reaches out to younger women who are more
IT savvy and rely on the internet for information. The
website complements BCWA’s on-the-ground activities
in educating the public on breast cancer, breast health
and early detection of breast cancer. In addition, BCWA
created its very own blog, www.bcwa.blogspot.com, to
enhance interaction, knowledge sharing and exchange
among BCWA members. To date the website has
recorded 9,487 visitors since it went live.

BCWA contributes towards the improvement of the quality
of life for women in general and women with breast cancer
in particular through regular networking and constant
communication with related organisations including
government and private hospitals, Ministry of Health,
Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development,
cancer control organisations, breast cancer support
groups, associations of health care professionals, hospices
and palliative care services, women’s organisations,
educational institutions and legal entities.
Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ)
BCWA has fostered a partnership with CCQ to improve
the cancer control capacity of both organisations. The
key strategies of this partnership lie in the exchange and
collaboration of information, resources, literature, research,
activities and expertise to enhance the development of
staff and volunteers.
International Union against Cancer (UICC)
BCWA is a member of the International Union against
Cancer (UICC) which is dedicated to global cancer control
strategies. The knowledge transfer and development
of BCWA’s staff and volunteers are fostered by the
dissemination of UICC resources and information, Reach
to Recovery Conferences and fellowship programmes.
As part of the exchange programme, Ms. Natalie Wust,
Community Fundraising Manager from CCQ visited
BCWA in August to train staff and volunteers on potential
fundraising strategies and to follow up on proposals
she made during her visit in 2007. As a result, BCWA is
implementing innovative fundraising events, namely, Girls
Nite Out, Clip for a Cause and Orchid Day. Orchid Day, will
be launched on 5 March 2010. It is modelled after Cancer
Council Australia’s Daffodil Day, a successful fundraising
programme since 1986. BCWA sent a staff member to
CCQ to observe the Daffodil Day launch in 2009. This
experience will be constructive in jumpstarting BCWA’s
Orchid Day.
As a key member of UICC, BCWA gains knowledge
through updates on cancer control, research findings and
the World Cancer Declaration. BCWA’s President, Ranjit
Kaur is currently a member of the Board of Directors of
UICC.
In 2009, three members attended the 15th UICC Reach to
Recovery International Breast Cancer Support Conference
in Brisbane, Australia. In addition, BCWA President Ranjit
Kaur, BCWA Technical Advisors Professor Yip Cheng Har
and Dr Ednin Hamzah also attended the conference. At
the conference, Professor Yip was awarded the 2009 RRI
Medal for Health Professionals for her commitment to
voluntary breast cancer support programmes.
In 2009 both partners renewed this unique collaborative
relationship which resulted in several desirable outcomes
including capacity building of staff and volunteers.
Malaysian Breast Cancer Council (MBCC)
BCWA is a founding member of the MBCC, aiding the
formation of a united front to facilitate the development
of breast cancer control strategies in Malaysia. It centres
on the issue of disseminating correct knowledge and
evidence-based information on breast health and breast
cancer, and, at the same time, demystifying the myths
associated with breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and
prevention.

of Breast Cancer” (2nd edition) under the Ministry of Health
to improve health and supportive care for women with
breast cancer.
Malaysian Cancer Resource Hub
Malaysian Cancer Resource Hub is a project supported
by the American Cancer Society (ACS). It aims to act
as a cancer information hub for the general public. This
collaborative project involves a five-way partnership
with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia, Malaysian
Women’s Action for Tobacco Control and Health (My
Watch), Hospice Malaysia, Cancer Research Initiatives
Foundation and BCWA.
This collaborative project is aimed at maximising limited
resources to create a bigger impact in educating the
public on cancer. This project is being finalised and is
due to go online in 2010 hosted by the National Cancer
Society of Malaysia.

The HOPE Handbook, A Guide for Cancer Caregivers is
an initiative of the Malaysian Oncological Society (MOS)
and Pfizer Malaysia. The handbook seeks to dispel
common misconceptions and myths surrounding cancer
and cancer care as well as to provide a guide on how
caregivers can better understand the needs of their
loved ones who are undergoing their cancer journey
from diagnosis, treatment to recovery. BCWA assisted
to identify cancer survivors and their caregivers who
could contribute their experience and testimonies for this
invaluable handbook.
Australian High Commission
The Australian High Commission has been supportive of
BCWA’s dragon boat paddling activities. It has also taken
the initiative to spearhead the inaugural Jamuan Teh

BCWA offers regular formal and informal training for
volunteers, members of the public, medical students and
healthcare professionals.
In 2009, three major training sessions on breast
health were conducted and attended by a total of 43
volunteers.
Reach to Recovery Training, 31 July - 2 August
Reach to Recovery Training is a training program for breast
cancer survivors who have completed treatment and are
ready to offer psychosocial support to help other women
diagnosed with breast cancer. It is extended to volunteers
in Malaysia and South East Asia and conducted at two
levels, namely, basic and intermediate levels.
Prostheses-making Training
BCWA provides training in prostheses-making to ensure
the ongoing supply of prostheses to women with breast
cancer. The training is also extended to breast cancer
support groups from other states who have indicated
their interest in producing prostheses for survivors in their
communities.
BCWA organised a three-day basic-level Reach to
Recovery Training on 31 July - 2 August 2009, which
was attended by 15 breast cancer survivors. The training
included theoretical sessions, skills building, role play and
discussion sessions.
Whilst this training equips the volunteers with skills and
knowledge to offer psychosocial support to other women,
it also offers therapy to the volunteers as they acknowledge
and resolve their own psychological issues
Breast Health Training for Trainers
Breast Health Training is provided to volunteers who
show an interest in volunteering for BCWA’s awareness
road shows and public education programmes. It is
conducted at two levels, namely, basic and intermediate,
where the volunteers were trained on breast health
awareness and breast self familiarisation methods.

The management and activities of BCWA are funded
through membership subscription, which is nominal and
through public donations, including annual donations
from individuals and corporate organisations.
Fundraising activities are critical for BCWA to continue
with its services. In 2009, fundraising events reached out
to people across Malaysia, engaging and involving them
in various ways by which they could show their support
for BCWA and its activities. BCWA thanks all well wishers
for the invaluable support and contribution provided in
2009.
Fundraising is also a tool to reach out to the community,
to raise awareness and to educate the public on breast
cancer.
Jamuan Teh Malaysia (JAM)
Modelled after the Cancer Council Australia’s Biggest
Morning Tea, this event was initiated and supported by
the Australian High Commission and co-organised by
BCWA with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia
(NCSM). It was officiated by Her Excellency Mrs Penny
Williams, Australia’s High Commissioner to Malaysia at
4
her residence on 13 August 2009.
The basic concept of this event is that anyone can host
a tea party anywhere within the event’s time frame to
help raise funds for these two cancer care organisations.
They were also encouraged to simply support this
event by attending the tea party or by purchasing the
event’s keepsake items. A Host Kit which contained a
host booklet, posters, flyers, donation forms, stickers,
balloons, a donation box and FAQs was made available
to anyone interested in hosting a tea party. This inaugural
event attracted 36 hosts and raised nett proceeds of
RM107,760.60 for both organisations. Some hosts came
from as far as the northern part of West Malaysia.
BCWA also hosted its very own JAM at BCWA’s premises
and was attended by more than 80 guests. The emcee,
Mr. Sham Sunder Binwani, a theatre celebrity and
comedian, brought the tea party up a notch with his
hilarious antics. The guests were kept entertained by an
array of exciting activities such as lucky draw, auction
and games with attractive prizes up for grabs. Since the
guests had so much fun they vowed to participate next
year, either as hosts or guests.

Girls Nite Out
In 2009, BCWA introduced a new fundraising event,
the Girls’ Nite Out, modelled after the Cancer Council
Australia’s Girls’ Night In. Girls’ Nite Out at BCWA
was hosted by Ms. Natalie Wust from Cancer Council
Queensland. It was the first time that such an activity
was organised at our premises. There was rip roaring
laughter as members gamely participated in the “Name
the Hunk”, “Peg Me Please” and “Cup Cake Decoration”
contests. Lucky winners went home with attractive
prizes from the Raffles draw.
through various events organised in October. In 2009,
a series of exciting activities was conducted in August
and October. The activities included the Look Good,
Feel Better Workshop, KL Tower Illumination, Walk
for World Pink, Charity Golf, Charity Gala Dinner and
Auction, and road shows during which breast self
familiarisation pamphlets were distributed to the public.
A total of RM402,000 was raised and divided amongst
four organisations, namely; BCWA, Cancer Research
Initiatives Foundation, College of Radiology and
National Cancer Society of Malaysia.
Clip for A Cause
Another fundraising campaign adapted from Cancer
Council Australia was ‘Clip for a Cause’, named after
“Clip for Cancer”. It was hosted for the first time by the
students of KBU International College at the KBU Pink
Bazaar fundraising event. Six male students participated
in this event during which three opted to wax their legs
and three others shaved their heads bald.
Pink Project with ACP Magazines
BCWA was proud to support ‘The Pink Project’, an
initiative by ACP Magazines and supported by its sister
titles Harper’s BAZAAR, CLEO, The Malaysian Women’s
Weekly and Cosmopolitan Malaysia.
Pink October with Estee Lauder Companies
Estee Lauder Companies has been supporting breast
cancer awareness, care and research and at the same
time raising funds in over 140 countries worldwide.
The highlight of this campaign is in the month of
October, which is the breast cancer awareness month.
The partnership and support of the Estee Lauder
Companies with BCWA for the past 13 years has been
mutually beneficial and rewarding. This corporate
organisation has consistently raised funds to help
BCWA and other NGOs to reach out to the community
24 | BCWA ACTIVITY REPORT 2009
The objective of the project was to raise awareness on
early detection of breast cancer through a nationwide
educational campaign with the production of bilingual
(English/Bahasa) breast self examination tent cards
distributed at selected points-of-sale outlets and by
BCWA through its own public education programmes.
The magazine brands also carried extensive editorial
features on the cause and support for the campaign.
Pro bono ads developed by creative agencies such
as Leo Burnett, Saatchi & Saatchi and Naga DBB on
breast health awareness were accorded to BCWA and
carried by the above titles in the October issue of the
respective magazines.

(BSF) for a video featuring Henry and celebrity Sharifah
Amani teaching young ladies on how to do BSF.
The video produced by Leo Burnett was hosted on
ASKCLEO.com website for seven weeks across CLEO
Malaysia and Singapore.
Harper’s Bazaar hosted the Pink Party at the Westin
Hotel for its partners, supporters and breast cancer
survivors. Five Pink Project celebrities along with BCWA
President Ranjit Kaur lit candles at the event and voiced
their pledges of support towards raising awareness on
breast cancer. BCWA also carried out an on-site Breast
Self Familiarisation demo at the Pink Party for the guests
present.
The highlight of the event was on 30th October when
ten members from our very own Dragon Boat Paddling
team, the “Pink Challengers” dressed in their bright
pink rashies and boas rode pillion with 20 Harley
Davidson Bikers around the city centre before arriving
in style at Hard Rock Café. The “Pink Challengers”
then distributed public education flyers to patrons of
Hard Rock Café. The Café staff got into the spirit of the
campaign, sporting pink elements on their uniforms
throughout the month.
Pinktober with Hard Rock Café Kuala Lumpur
BCWA partnered with Hard Rock Cafe Kuala Lumpur
to help raise awareness for breast cancer throughout
the month of October. The month long campaign,
“Pinktober’ was Hard Rock Café’s worldwide initiative to
create awareness and generate funds for breast cancer.
Apart from the awareness campaign, collectibles such
as special limited edition Hard Rock pins and T-shirts,
were on sale to raise funds for breast cancer.

Gin & Jacqie Breast Cancer Awareness Bag Print
Design Competition
A unique fundraising and awareness event, this project
ran from July to the end of the year. It began with a bag
print design competition, voting to select the winner and
finally the launch of the bag with the winning design. The
bags were sold at RM18 per piece to raise funds for
BCWA.
The uniqueness of this project was that participants
were required to design a bag print that portrayed what
breast cancer meant to them or how the design could
help to promote breast cancer awareness. Participants
were required to conduct research on breast cancer and
indirectly this generated breast cancer awareness. The
competition drew 180 entries and received a whopping
8,000 votes during the voting period.

Royal Selangor Jelly Mould Making Workshop
Royal Selangor came back again this year with their
signature fundraising event, the jelly mould making
workshop and collected RM5,040 for BCWA. The
workshop was officially launched with a bang with a
number of local celebrities and politicians. The all men
line-up wore pink aprons and tested their jelly-making
skills.
The workshop series ended with an invitation to BCWA
members to participate in a fun-filled jelly making workshop.
Besides creating their own jelly masterpieces, they also
toured the Royal Selangor gallery and attended a short
session at the School of Hard Knocks where they made
their own pewter bowls.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
BCWA acknowledges and extends its deepest appreciation to donors and supporters for their incredible generosity and
contribution throughout 2009. Every contribution, great or small, is equally significant in making a difference in the lives of
women with breast cancer in particular and women in general. With this support, BCWA has been able to improve the
quality of supportive care and reach out to a larger population.
