Why Are So Many Godly
Men Passing So Quickly?
DURING MY 51 YEARS ON THIS EARTH, I have witnessed the departure of men and women of God as they transfer from this mortal life into the heavenly world of immortality. Usually in a year’s time, I hear of two or three men or
women in ministry who pass away. Yet in 2011, from March
10th through May 1st, there have been five well-known and
well-respected men of God who passed from this life: my
father Fred Stone, Dr. Ray H. Hughes, David Wilkerson, and
my friend Aaron Cooper, the pastor where I experienced two
of my greatest revivals - the eleven week revival in Lafollette,
TN and the eight week revival in Daisy, TN. The fifth man
was a great prophetic teacher named J.R. Church. It seemed
rather odd to me that so many men we personally knew who
were considered great men of prayer, revelation and influence,
would pass so close to one another.
The old timers used to point out that when great men of
God died, the weather would turn bitter on the day of their
death, with winds and rain pouring on the land. The tradition
emerged that the earth was sad to see their passing and this
sadness was manifest in the weather patterns. Of course there
is no Biblical teaching for this and it is only a man made tradition. However, when my dad and Ray Hughes both died in
Cleveland TN, the weather turned bad the day of their death
and cleared the day of their burial. The day the prophet David
Wilkerson died, tornadoes and devastation struck the south.
The old timers used Elijah’s departure as an example - he was
carried away in a whirlwind, a tornado like spinning wind that
transported the prophet from earth to heaven (II Kings 2).
Perhaps it is only a coincidence, but it has been observed over
the years.
Now back to the question of why so many praying saints
are passing near the same time? The simple answer is these
saints are older, have lived full lives and eventually we will all
transfer worlds. This explanation says it is all just coincidence,
nothing more and nothing less. However, there is one ancient
belief recorded in Jewish sacred literature concerning why the
righteous men died before the flood of Noah struck the earth:
“And all of the sons of men who knew the Lord, died in
that year before the Lord brought up evil upon them; for the
Lord willed them to die, so as not to behold the evil that God
would bring upon their brothers and relatives, as he had declared to do so.” – Jasher Chapter 5; verse 21
Many of those recently departed “old time believers” were
very strict in their fellowship with God and walked in a higher
level of sanctification and holiness. They were grieved to see
the spiritual condition of the church and the world. The spiritual darkness saddened their spirits and burdened their hearts.
Could it be possible that coming events, parallel to the days
of Noah and Lot, are going to be so vexing due to the iniquity
of mankind, that the Lord has taken a generation of the godly
out of this world to prevent them from seeing the evils and
judgment that will come?
There is no answer to the question. However one thing I
do know is that when someone departs, someone must pick
up their mantle and carry on. Someone must fill the empty
spot at the altar and in the prayer closet and not allow the
voice of prayer to be silenced. I do have a spark of hope when
I see the hunger for God in this generation. There is much to
do and little time to complete the assignments!
As we live, we are living to depart and when we depart
someone must fill in the gap. In this issue of the VOE we will
honor my father and your friend, Fred Stone, with special articles that I believe will enlighten and inform you.
When I visited dad at home before he went to the hospital, he was grieved about being so weak and tired that it
affected his prayer life. I said, “Dad, you shouldn’t feel bad
because you are on dialysis, your body is worn out and your
eyesight is almost gone. The Lord understands.” He turned to
me, pointed the bony finger of his left hand in my face and
said, “There is never an excuse for a man not praying. When
you stand before God He will not accept your excuses!” I im... continued on page 18

My First Trip to the Stone House
There are some memories
that remain in my mind for a
lifetime, and one of those is
the first time I was invited to
Salem, Virginia to meet Perry’s family. I flew on my very
first plane ride from Alabama
and arrived at the airport in
Roanoke, Virginia, where Perry
met me at the gate. For some
reason he can still remember
the plaid dress I was wearing.
He says he can still see me
exiting the plane, like a little
girl going on her first trip away
from home! Actually it was my
first trip alone and away from
home.
We rode in his car to 530

he was then living with his parents, Juanita and Fred Stone. I
was nervous but felt very comfortable around them, especially Juanita who welcomed
me and made me feel at home.
One incident I will never forget was when Perry, his mom
and I were sitting at the dining
room table having a snack. Out
of the blue, Perry said, “Mom,
I’m never going to get married,
am I.” His mother laughed and
said, “No you probably won’t.”
At that moment I was a little
confused about why he would
fly me to Virginia to meet his
parents and then say he would
never be married!
I would later learn that
Perry was extremely focused
on study and prayer and would
spend hours, sometimes into
the early morning, spending
time with the Lord. He was
very jealous of his time with
the Lord and wanted to ensure that nothing or nobody
would ever interfere with that
sacred time. Thus, in his heart
he knew he would marry me,
but was slightly fearful of distractions that would hinder
the flow he was experiencing.
He eventually discovered that
I would gladly give him his
time and never be a hindrance,
only a help. As he saw this, his
fears melted like butter and he
did marry me. We have been
together for almost 30 years.

revivals at every church where
his father pastored. From

At times this phenomena is a part of the

waves bring to mind two significant passages. The fist concerns the flood in Noah’s day, when the “fountains of the deep

milestone in her life as she turns 50 on Monday, September 19th. Mark this

expressions of love, prayers, and sympathy given to
me after the passing of my husband, Fred Stone. I

his illness. Although God chose to take him to his
heavenly home, and we miss him very much, we know
he is where he longed to be. He fought the good fight
and kept the faith, his battles are now over and his
victories are won!
