Report to Our Communities
Report to Our Communities
2014 Annual Report
Letter from Frank Dick and John Wanke
The Lenawee County Education Foundation (LCEF) receives and disburses
funds, property and gifts exclusively for the benefit of the Lenawee
Intermediate School District and its educational system. Thanks to our
wonderful Lenawee County community and individuals who are involved at
many levels, 2014 was a great year.
2014 was both a year of change and a year that stayed the same for the LCEF.
Changes included:
Background
• Since its inception in 1985, the Lenawee County Education Foundation has: • Awarded over $4,530,000 in 4,459 scholarships to Lenawee County students.
• Provided over $243,500 in 563 mini-grants to Lenawee County teachers for
innovative classroom programs.
• Raised over $600,000 to construct the LISD Education Service Center.
Key People
Janet McDowell, our long time Executive Director, retired after serving 23 years. David Hickman, one of the founding
trustees, resigned, since he relocated to Seattle, WA and then Donald Bush retired from our board due to illness. We
thank them for their leadership and guidance of the LCEF during their tenures.
A New Program
The Job Readiness Program was launched to assist those not attending college or in need of education to gain
employment. This program is highlighted further in the annual report.
New Scholarship Software
A second generation of scholarship application software was purchased in 2014 for the 2015 application year to
provide an enhanced experience for all who will use it from students to school counselors to scholarship evaluators.
Consistencies included:
Continuing, increased financial support beginning in 1985 with two scholarships totaling $2,000 and attaining 336
scholarships in 2014 valued at $336,550.
Long-standing collaboration with the Lenawee Community Foundation which holds permanently endowed funds
with earnings providing scholarships for Lenawee students.
Our partnership with the LISD, and relationships with the school districts, their counselors and teachers that make
it possible for students within the LISD to receive financial support to further their education. They make the whole
scholarship program possible.
Our special partnership with the Elizabeth Ruthruff Wilson Foundation, which awards Lenawee students with
scholarships for summer music and performing arts camps.
Generous, committed donors with over 25% of the scholarships set up as memorials to honor a loved one, and
remember year after year what they represented in life to the community and their families.
The Lenawee County Educational Foundation is a great way to financially support educational efforts on behalf of
students, staff and facilities in Lenawee County. The opportunities are endless. Please contact us if you would like to
pursue an endeavor that fits the LCEF mission.
Kindest Regards,
Frank Dick, Chairman
John Wanke, Executive Director

Janet McDowell Retires
After 23 years as Executive Director, Janet retires as the longest standing director of the Lenawee County
Education Foundation. During her tenure, scholarships grew from 7 scholarships in 1990 for $7,000 to
342 scholarships in 2013 for $357,800. During her twenty-three years, over 4,100 students benefited
from approximately $4.2M in scholarships from the Lenawee County Education Foundation. No small
feat to be overlooked.
Janet, along with her husband Gary‘s support, gave many hours to ensure all details were taken care of
for the donors and recipients as well as making the Scholarship Reception special. The McDowell’s have
always been involved with organizations that helped our youth in Lenawee County. In 2012, they were
recognized for their service to the community with the “Lenawee Leadership Award” from the Lenawee
Community Foundation. For this, we, the trustees of the Foundation, are forever grateful.
You can invest in the future of Lenawee County
students through support of the
Lenawee County Education Foundation.

Our Memorial Scholarships Recipients
Over 25% of the scholarships offered through LCEF are in memory
of a family member or friend who are memorialized through
either an endowed scholarship for perpetuity or annual funding.
These memorials recognize the individual’s contributions, qualities
or interest during their lives and typically the scholarships are
focused on an area of interest honoring the lost family member or
friend. If you have an interest in starting a scholarship in memory
of someone, please contact LCEF.
“Participating in the LCEF Memorial Scholarship
program allows us to honor a true renaissance
man, my husband, Roy E. Freeman. Encouraging
and supporting other non-traditional students
in their quest for knowledge would have
received Roy’s stamp of approval.”

Endowed Scholarships
LCEF works with the Lenawee Community Foundation
(LCF) to provide endowed scholarships. An endowed
scholarship usually requires a one-time contribution
of $25,000 for every $1,000 scholarship offered. This
partnership allows LCEF to offer more scholarships and
leverage the LCF investments to maximize returns for
funding scholarships. Currently, LCF has almost $1.8M
in endowed funds for scholarships offered through LCEF.

Mini-Grant Awards
LCEF / United Bank & Trust Mini-Grant History
Over the past 20 years, $243,490 has been awarded to
Lenawee County teachers via mini-grants. Partnerships
with the Lenawee County Education Foundation have
included the Adrian Mall, The Sage Foundation, and
United Bank & Trust. The Strokes for Students golf outing
also provides financial support to provide grants for
teachers up to $500 each. Each spring, a “prize patrol”
comprised of United Bank & Trust staff and LCEF board
members surprise teachers in their classroom with their
award. The following spring, each recipient creates a
display board detailing their grant in pictures which is
put on display at various United Bank & Trust branch
offices for community members to enjoy.
In May 2014, 19 teachers were surprised with mini-grant
awards, totaling $8,345 for the County.

Applying for a Teacher Mini-Grant
The Teacher Mini-Grant program provides funds to
teachers to develop and implement instructional projects
that motivate and challenge students to learn. Proposals
should be unique classroom projects that enliven and
enrich the curriculum. The maximum funding request
is $500. 2015 applications will be available online at
lenaweecef.org; click on “Mini-Grants” under “What We
Do”. Teacher mini-grant applications will be assessed
on the quality of the project and the quality of the
application. Please be sure to thoroughly and concisely
address all questions on the mini-grant application.
Applications are reviewed one time annually and are
due by April 1, 2015.
Mini-grants give me the opportunity to enrich my curriculum to
design and execute projects and experiences that are out of the
ordinary. My students gain cultural experience that otherwise
would be unattainable. I am grateful to the Lenawee County
Education Foundation for their continued support of educators
and students to encourage growth and varied experiences.

Stubnitz Dinner Auction
The Lenawee Intermediate School District Stubnitz
Environmental Education Programs (LISD SEEP) provides
Lenawee County students with opportunities for hands-on
science lessons, outdoor learning, and guided trail hikes
through Heritage Park, as well as Hidden Lake Gardens, for
the Life Cycle of Plants program. During the 2013-14 school
year, 1877 students experienced these field trip programs.
In addition, student interns from Adrian College gained
valuable experience while helping to staff the programs,
along with a dedicated team of SEEP Volunteers.
The Lenawee County Education Foundation has sponsored
a dinner auction at the LISD Center for a Sustainable
Future (CSF) to raise funds to help support these field trip
programs since 2000. In 2013, the Corporate and Individual
Fundraising Drive resulted in $12,747 in donations and the
Dinner Auction event raised $2,933, for a total of $15,680
in revenue for the 2013 LISD SEEP Fundraising Drive.

Job Readiness Program (JRP)
During this year, a new scholarship program was introduced
to assist Lenawee County graduates and residents with the
cost of education/training which leads to employment or
improvement in employment. These awards for up to $1,000
per year, are granted year-around with the application
available on the LCEF website at: http://www.lenaweecef.
org/what-we-do/scholarships. LCEF collaborates with the
South Central Michigan Works (SCMW), Adrian, Michigan
for the in-take screening to assure all community resources
are used in helping with the education/training effort. This
LCEF program is being guided by businesses, Lenawee
Now, SCMW and the LISD. The primary difference with this
scholarship program is that it targets those graduates/
residents who are interested in employment not requiring
a bachelor’s degree.
LCEF is seeking additional funding for this program – if you
or your company have an interest in helping, please contact
LCEF – John Wanke at [email protected].
“The Job Readiness Scholarship Program truly
helped me in getting back to school and
pursuing a new profession. I knew I wanted
something different for my professional self
and I knew I wanted to go into a new field. The
Job Readiness Scholarship was exactly what
I needed to help get that jump start on my
education. As a non-traditional student, I was
being turned down for financial assistance
by every grant possibility offered. I was lucky
enough to find John and Dawn who helped me
navigate through a couple of other programs
and eventually receive the Job Readiness
Scholarship. I am currently enrolled in my
final pre-requisite and have applied for the
Radiography Program. If accepted I will be
finishing in 2016!“
