Curry President & CEO, Citrus Valley Health Partners Foothill Presbyterian Hospital 40 Turns If the story of Foothill Presbyterian Hospital were to be written as a novel it would have a straightforward plot: Neighbors come together to build a community hospital. People like physician Elvin Stanton and businessman Leonard Ray who, in 1964, were instrumental in making the dream of a “good, not-for-profit community hospital” to serve the foothill communities come true. Or local businessman C.M. Johnston who donated 11 acres of land and established a $2.5 million hospital fund in memory of his physician son, Morris L. Johnston. Or Donald Adams and Luella Gongwer, who served as FPH’s first Administrator and Director of Nursing, and helped establish the hospital’s high quality standards of care. And the city of Glendora, which assisted in acquiring the taxexempt bonds to finance hospital construction costs. Foothill Presbyterian Hospital has always honored its roots as a not-forprofit community hospital even while evolving into a comprehensive, fullservice medical center. The hospital is known regionally for its unique blend of general acute care and specialty services, including a Diabetes Care Unit and Outpatient Diabetes Education Program recognized by the American Diabetes Association as a Center of Excellence for diabetes education and the Carl E. Wynn Newborn Inn featuring state-ofthe-art prenatal and postnatal care for mothers and babies all in the comfort of their own private rooms. Through its affiliation with Citrus Valley Health Partners, Foothill patients also have access to a robotic surgery program, cardiac care, newborn intensive care and a full range of rehabilitation services. And in 2007, the hospital grew even bigger with the addition of The Arthur and Sarah Ludwick Emergency Care Pavilion. Despite its expansion of both programs and square footage, Foothill continues to retain that warm, inviting atmosphere of a hometown community hospital. This is because of friendly staff, physicians and volunteers who are dedicated to continuing the legacy of the hospital’s founders. And, so, even after 40 years of service to the community, the story of Foothill Presbyterian Hospital continues. Last year’s participants lost a combined total of 816 pounds. Nearly 20 of those pounds belonged to San Dimas resident and winner of the Bonita Unified School District challenge Casey Cox. Since joining the program last year, Casey has kept the weight off and became a cooking consultant for Cooking for Health, Inc. in San Dimas, where he now teaches others to eat healthy, save money and enjoy life. Progress didn’t come overnight for Casey. It took hard work and a commitment to his goals in order to change his life for the better. “The best time to start changing is now,” he says. “Don’t try to run a marathon when you’ve never walked around your block. Take small steps and you will really see it make a difference.” Lighten Up SGV kicked off its second annual community weighin event and weight loss challenge on January 19. This year, CVHP also partnered with West Covina Unified School District to sponsor a special Lighten Up SGV program for their staff, students and families. Pregnancy and the birth of a baby should be one of the most special and joyous times in a woman’s life. But for those women facing a high risk pregnancy or delivery complications, that joy is often replaced by stress and even fear. High risk means that you or your baby has an increased chance of a health problem. It doesn’t necessarily mean that there will be one. But with a dedicated and skilled health care team on your side, that risk can be lowered. There are many reasons why a pregnancy could be deemed high risk – such as the mother’s medical condition, a problem with a previous pregnancy and multiple fetuses. Lighten Up SGV features an online social networking site and a series of free weight loss support and family-focused classes provided to community members by health care professionals. The ultimate goal of Lighten Up SGV is to help the residents of the San Gabriel Valley get healthier, live happier and help CVHP fulfill its vision to be an integral partner in elevating the community’s health. Sometimes women with high risk pregnancies need closer monitoring and specialized care in a hospital environment. The Family Birth & Newborn Center (FBNC), located on the grounds of Citrus Valley Medical Center – Queen of the Valley Campus in West Covina, has an antepartum (before birth) unit that can care for patients anywhere from 24 hours to several weeks if necessary. For more information about Lighten Up SGV or for a complete schedule of classes, visit www.lightenupsgv.com. Sometimes a high risk pregnancy can turn into a high risk delivery and the baby will need to be admitted 6 | C I T R U S VA L L E Y H E A LT H PA R T N E R S M A G A Z I N E into a Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). If you are delivering at the FBNC, the NICU is located in the same building just one floor above Labor & Delivery. In addition to these critical services, the FBNC is also home to an inhouse laborist program. Since launching in January 2013, this program is truly making a difference in the delivery of care at the hospital. Already, lives have been saved because of the around-the-clock OB coverage. Doctors have performed two emergency C-sections and saved both a mother and her baby after a sudden placental abruption. The goal of this program is to further elevate the level of care provided to our maternity patients, provide 24/7 coverage in the hospital, eliminate unattended deliveries and become a destination center for high-risk maternal transfers. With around-the-clock care, state-of-the-art equipment and a highly trained team of specialists and caregivers, Citrus Valley is doing everything it can to ensure that all special deliveries are also safe deliveries. Please visit www.cvhp.org for more information on the CVMC Family Birth & Newborn Center. S P R I N G 2 01 3 | 7 Healing Getting Ready for Our New Look through therapy Through the work of its four facilities, Citrus Valley Health Partners (CVHP) is proud of its ability to offer a wide range of programs and a continuum of care that spans a patient’s early and later years of life. CVHP is getting ready to begin an exciting new modernization project for our Citrus Valley Medical Center – Inter-Community Campus in Covina. These plans were developed with help from our community partners, former patients and CVHP physicians and employees. The goal was to design a welcoming, easily accessible and aesthetically pleasing environment for our patients and visitors. In addition, it is vital that CVHP also invest in highly technical capabilities. These construction projects will begin later this year, with anticipated completion by early 2015. The ICC Modernization projects include: ■ Nearly doubling the current size of the Emergency Department at ICC allowing for easier access, more 8 | integration therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation and sports medicine rehabilitation. ■ Also a first for our region, CVHP will be installing a 3.0 Tesla MRI. This new technology offers unparalleled image quality for many different specialties, offering physicians an even clearer picture of the human body. One of the best examples of this can be found in the Citrus Valley Centers for Rehabilitation Services. This is the only program in the East San Gabriel Valley that treats both adults and children with a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to therapy. The team of licensed professionals is trained in a full range of diagnostic and therapy services and use state-of-the-art equipment. The team focuses on helping patients achieve the highest possible level of function following surgery, injury, or illness. The Centers also offer a number of specialized outpatient programs including: neurologic rehabilitation for patients living with neurologic conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease; dysphagia therapy for pediatric and adult patients who are experiencing difficulties swallowing; orthopedic therapy for those who have chronic pain from headaches, arthritis and spinal disorders; balance and vestibular services to improve a patient’s strength and reduce the risk of falls; and lymphedema therapy to reduce pain and discomfort caused by swelling due to accumulation of lymphatic fluid. These exciting projects are for you, our community, as CVHP continues to transform health care for our region and build on our vision of being an integral partner in elevating our communities’ health. General rehabilitation services include: physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, wound therapy, sensory The Speech Pathology Outpatient Program at the Queen of the Valley Campus has expanded to include a Voice Clinic. We have a highly comfortable surroundings and a new waiting area and public entrance. ■ Citrus Valley Heart Center’s Hybrid Operating Room – integrating advanced imaging technology and surgical capabilities to perform the newest generation of cardiac and vascular surgical and interventional procedures. The facility has invested in stateof-the-art technology, such as Videostroboscopy Laryngeal Imaging, for the expansion of this program. In addition to the many outpatient programs and services, the Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Citrus Valley Medical Center – Queen of the Valley Campus in West Covina can treat patients in the hospital who are recovering from stroke, brain injury, neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease, spinal cord injury, amputation and orthopedic disorders such as hip fractures and pelvic fractures. CVHP joins the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) Paveljit S. Bindra, MD Chief Medical Officer/ Chief Medical Information Officer CVHP is the region’s first community hospital system to join the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), a nationwide initiative aimed at improving the quality of surgical care. Sponsored by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), NSQIP is the first nationally validated, outcomes-based program measuring surgical data with the goal of reducing post-operation mortality and morbidity and reducing the length of patient stays in hospitals after surgery. Studies have shown that NSQIP hospitals prevented 250 to 500 complications per hospital, per year and 66 percent of those hospitals saw improvement in their mortality levels. Our participation in NSQIP has already led to important developments of best practice guidelines in areas such as prevention of pulmonary complications, sepsis and other post-surgery infections. Most importantly, it provides our team with valuable guidance in ways to improve outcomes and improve our patients’ experience. Fortunately, the da Vinci Robotic Surgery Program at CVHP offers female patients a more accurate, less painful and less invasive alternative than ever before. Dr. Zaida Obeso, a family practitioner, knew of the surgical options to treat gynecological issues and recently faced her own Zaida Obeso, MD with Maria Santos decision. Maria also chose robotic surgery to treat her on-going gynecologic issues. “I had never had surgery before, so I didn’t know what to expect,” she said. “The surgery went very well, recovery was faster than I had expected, my pain was minimal and I was able to return to work within two weeks.” Foundation News 2012 Autumn Nocturne Black Tie Gala More than 470 guests celebrated the 2012 Laband Award recipient The Wynn Family – Mrs. Billie A.
