World Land Trust (WLT) is an international conservation charity raising funds to purchase and
protect critically endangered habitats around the world and ultimately, the animals which inhabit
them. For 22 years, WLT has been working to protect some of the world’s most endangered places
and is marking 2011 with events designed to focus specifically on projects in urgent need of our help
and attention. WLT has worked with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) in establishing and securing
Elephant corridors in India, and we are delighted to bring a very exciting project to India,
in continuation of this work.
‘Emeralds for Elephants, India’ is a dynamic and exciting exhibition designed to create awareness and
raise important funds for the protection of the critically endangered Asian Elephant. Asian Elephant
habitats are becoming increasingly fragmented with the expansion of India’s cities and agriculture
but by working with the Wildlife Trust of India, land has been identified which can reconnect the
isolated pockets of forest habitats. By funding this land purchase and allowing the elephants to
follow their traditional migration routes, we will create wildlife corridors that will protect not just
elephants but a huge range of other wildlife, too. A ‘corridor’ is an area of land that links existing
protected areas, enabling animals to move safely over larger areas and larger habitats, which results
in more species living safely. To provide a conflict-free passage for Elephants, WTI works closely
with the government and communities living in the corridors by providing people with alternate
land, houses and basic civic amenities. By creating Elephant corridors and engaging communities
in voluntary relocation initiatives, it will be possible to reduce human/Elephant conflict, which
can often result in the deaths of both villagers and Elephants, so that both Elephants and humans
have safe havens and larger, more viable habitats are created. It has been calculated that to fund the
purchase of every identified wildlife corridor and therefore safeguard the Asian Elephant forever
would cost approximately £10 million. Although significant, this is achievable and we hope this
beautiful collection helps us take a giant step towards our target. With an estimated 20,000 Asian
elephants surviving it works out at just £500 to save each Elephant.
We are proud and honoured that ethical Zambian emerald company, Gemfields, has worked with
us to recruit 10 of India’s most talented jewellery designers to create a 10-piece collection that will
be sold at a Grand Auction in Mumbai, in October 2011. WLT are delighted to bring the ‘Emeralds
for Elephants’ exhibition to India, following the success of WLT’s collaboration with Gemfields
on ‘Emeralds for Elephants’ in London in 2010. We look forward to repeating and exceeding this
success in India, this year.
This exhibition demonstrates that whatever your talent or gift in life, everyone can do something to

relocated away from the threat of elephants. As one villager recently commented, the
opportunity to move was “like a blessing from God. Before we were forced to remain indoors
and quietly pray that the elephants would go away soon.” Wildlife Trust of India
Proceeds went to the United Nations Foundation to support HIV/AIDS relief programs in Africa
conducted by The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Other major charity
auctions Sotheby’s has staged include: The Whitechapel Sale in 2006, the NSPCC auction in 2007,
the sale of JK Rowling’s ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’ in 2007 to benefit Children’s Voice,
the Art for Africa Auction in 2009, and the recent Artists for Serpentine Sale in June this year.

“Elephants are very close to my heart, and have been since I was a child. This is mainly because they are hugely
important and cherished in Jaipur; you will spot them as a talisman (mostly in the form of the Hindu god Ganesh)
round many a Jaipuri’s neck, but also because they are such elegant creatures despite their size. In fact, it was during
the ‘Jaipur Elephant Festival’ that I was inspired to design the earrings that I have contributed. As I was watching
the graceful parade of elephants I thought how beautiful it would look to have an elephant elegantly hanging from a
woman’s ears, intricately decorated as the real life elephants are in India.”
Sanjay Kasliwal inherited the love and passion for jewellery from his father. Since his childhood he
has been exposed to the splendour of jewels, craftsmanship and design. The Gem Palace archives
are a constant source of inspiration, however Sanjay blends these traditional Indian designs made
for the Maharajas with those of other cultures to create timeless pieces of art. The Kasliwal family
were invited to Jaipur in 1728 by Maharaja Jai Singh when he was building his new city, Jaipur, which
he wanted to become a centre of excellence. The Kasliwals were appointed as the Crown Jewellers.
In 1852 when the Maharaja was expanding the city the Kasliwals moved to a piece of land outside
the old city walls and established The Gem Palace on the site where it remains to the present day.

The Meena Bazar Group had gained the trust of the fashion conscious Hyderabadis about twenty
years ago, when the Meena Bazar Group wanted to expand its business, it turned to jewellery.
Having adorned the society for weddings, celebrations, festivals and parties for close to four decades,
it was a natural progression into jewels. Meena Jewellers came to Basheerbagh, Hyderabad, dealing in
diamonds, gold, pearls and precious gemstones. Constant and increasing demand from overseas led
to the opening of Meena Jewellers’ second store in Dubai, UAE.

“Elephants are known for their superior intelligence and structured social order. Female elephants while maintaining
close bonds among themselves interact well with other herds, families, and clans. The unique bangle is designed
and inspired by the bonding of female elephants in the forest. The closeness of the design highlights the elephant
community moving in very close knit groups. Their size is in direct contrast to the gentle quietness they have and their
commitment towards family life and bonding.
The three finger ring is inspired by ‘Elephant Riding’, a tradition dating back to the ancient times of rajas and
maharajas. The design takes inspiration from the days of royalty when riding an elephant was a sign of position,
power and greatness. The trunk, an elephant’s most important and versatile appendage, is sensitive enough to pick up
a single blade of grass, yet strong enough to rip the branches off a tree. The beautiful ring is inspired by the strength
of the largest mammal on earth today ‘The Elephant’.”

“The Ganesha is definitely the most popular form in India. Its sheer shape allows for experimentation and thus
I have given it a contemporary form. Besides it being the most sought after deity in our religious environment,
it has universal appeal and is worshipped by one and all, irrespective of their caste. The appearance of the Ganesha
is that of abundance. Somehow your troubles, your daily tensions seem to fade away in front of its imposing form.
The Ganesha is said to give us all we ask for. The Zambian emerald jewel in its hand denotes that. The emerald
jewel is the silent wish of the observer, it is the gift that Ganesha has to give the beholder, it is the sheer life force
that he holds in his hand, and readily is willing to hand it over to the one who asks for it. It is power, it is wealth,
it is health.”
Arzan Khambatta is an architect by profession and a sculptor by choice. Encouraged by his parents,
he started sculpting at a young age. He would scout the streets, garages, construction sites for scrap
metal and weld them into pieces of art he fondly christened ‘Scraptures’. What started off purely as a
hobby, slowly became a way of life, when his first buyer, the architect Dara Mistry bought a piece in
1983. Arzan then had a solo exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery in 1993.
Arzan’s comissions include the ‘Moghul’ outside the jewel of India at the Nehru Centre
commissioned by Noshir Talati in 1989, the ‘Dolphins’ at Worli and the ‘Ceat Rhino’ at Nariman
Point. Khambatta’s works are collected by leading collectors and can be found in a number of high
profile houses, hotels, and private collections around the world. Arzan has had an extraordinary 10
solo shows and over 50 group shows worldwide.
