Great news for Blarney
At a public meeting in Rathduff last week, Fine Gael Cork North
Central Deputy, Dara Murphy, confirmed that a Letter of Intent
will be signed next week for construction of a new Garda station
in Blarney to serve the people of Blarney, Rathduff and Grenagh.
Deputy Murphy established the fact having spoken to the Minister
of State at the Office of Public Works, Brian Hayes TD.
Construction for the new station is expected to commence in
March this year.
"Since it was burnt to the ground in October 2008, the absence of
a proper Garda station in Blarney has been a major concern for
the people of Blarney, Rathduff and Grenagh. I am delighted to
confirm that the Government is providing capital for the building
of a modern, high-tech, purpose-built Garda station for people of
Blarney, Rathduff, Grenagh and the surrounding area.
There is also strong hope that a local contractor may be the the
contractor, the icing on the cake for a very important development
in Blarney."

Caitriona Twomey of Cork Penny Dinners
is January Cork Person of Month
Cork Penny Dinners has been serving meals to people in need
in Cork since the 1840’s, and volunteer Caitriona Twomey, one
of the leading organisers, received a Person of the Month
award to mark her own unique contribution and as a
representative of the whole organisation.
“Penny Dinners cook and serve approximately 850 meals per
week, originally for one penny, and now the rough equivalent, and
they are open seven days a week all year round, including
Christmas Day. They are Cork’s oldest, independent caring
organisation, and one that we can be truly proud of, especially of
all those who volunteer or donate food”, said Brian Crowley MEP
who presented Caitriona with her award.
Penny Dinners has ties right back to the soup kitchens, at the time
of the famine in the 1840’s. They are based at 4 Little Hanover St.,
but are currently fundraising to purchase a new premises or to
rebuild so that they can further enhance the services they provide.
To celebrate their 18th
birthday in Ireland, office

BEHIND
THE CASTLE
WALLS
with Adam, Head Gardener,
Blarney Castle
January has been a mixed month weather wise. We have had a little snow and a touch
of frost but that hasn’t put off the bulbs and it looks as if spring is already on the way.
We have daffodils, snow drops, cyclamen, hellebores and witch hazel already
flowering around the grounds. Our daffodil avenue is a real show stopper and it’s well
worth a visit just to see that. The spring bulbs are a welcome splash of colour around
the gardens, and we are adding to the collection every year.
There are a lot of jobs to do over the next few weeks in preparation for spring. We
have already put in our indoor early potatoes and started sowing seeds including
tomatoes, peppers, indoor salad crops, leeks, sweet pea and assorted bedding plants for
this years displays. Put in shallots and garlic now if you didn’t do it in the autumn. We
have just pruned our grape vines and apple trees and have also done an early prune on
all of our roses as some had started to bud.
It’s the time of year for renovation and replanting in the gardens. We are pruning some
of our overgrown shrub beds and moving some of the overcrowded plants. The start of
the year is always busy for us as we try to get things in place for the new tourist
season. We have just received an order of conifers to further enhance the Pinetum and
are expecting a delivery of rare trees and shrubs to be planted in the newly renovated
areas. We are also in the process of resurfacing all of our woodland paths with newly
chipped bark and mulching the shrub beds with old bark chips and compost. Nothing
gets wasted here!
Another exciting piece of news is that we have just received a delivery of 27
varieties of the Kennedy Irish Primrose, a unique collection of Primroses bred over 35
years from old Irish varieties. They have been bred by one of Ireland’s leading
amateur primrose breeders, Joe Kennedy, with the help of FitzGerald Nurseries. 18 of
these varieties are as yet unreleased to the public and we are the only garden in Ireland
to receive them. We will have a display bed at the main entrance with some
information, but will also be planting them throughout the grounds and reporting back
to the nursery on how they perform.
Our tree labelling project is going well and we now have 500 trees around the
estate tagged with their botanical name. Only around another 1000 to go until we start
on the shrubs!
I started a new facebook group in January ‘Friends of Blarney Castle Gardens’ and we
already have over 100 members. Please join if you have an interest in gardening or
want to keep up with the latest news from the castle. I update it most days with photos
from around the grounds. I look forward to seeing you online or in the gardens.
The Donal Crowley Memorial Cycle supporting Cork ARC

Cloghphilip Castle
T
he name, Cloghphilip, may be, translated as the
“Stone House” of Philip. A document drafted in
Cork in1488 records how John, son of Richard, son
of Simon Barrett, then the lord of Cloghphilip, gave
Cloghphilip to Owen MacCarthy.
The river of the valley of Philip, bounded the lands on the north, Temayr
(Tower) on the south; the stream near Maghmucky was to the east, and the
stream by Gort-donoughmore to the west. It included Kilnamacky (the big
abounding wood).
Owen MacCarthy was a brother to the chief of Muskerry, Cormac surnamed
“Laidhir,” or strong. Owen slew that brother a few years later at Carrignamuck
or Dripsey Castle. He held the chieftain-ship until slain by Cormac og, son of
Cormac Laidhir, who succeeded. The posterity of Owen remained in the
Cloghphilip district which he possessed before he became chief.
Cormac McTeige McCarthy when chief of Muskerry in his will of 1583,
bequeathed that half of Cloghroe, nearest Blarney, to his son and heir Cormac
oge, and the other part to his elder son (by Ellen Barrett) Donagh MacCormac.
Both were to pay agreed yearly sums to Finem Mac Dermod McOwen, Donagh
McTeige McOwen and Donagh McPhelim during their lives.
Cormac oge in 1589, mortgaged his half of Cloghroe (including Cloghphilip)
to Donagh – his step-brother. The owner of the other half, Cormac, was entitled
to resume possession after the repayment of the money. A provision in the
mortgage stipulated that if Donagh erected any buildings on the lands during the
interval, Cormac would pay such sum as may be awarded by valuation. Donagh
probably restored Cloghphilip Castle, hence his initials on a stone inserted in an
internal wall, with the date 1590. D.C.K. stands for Donagh (Mc) Cormac (Mc)
Carthy. In the document of 1488, Carthy is written “Karthraygh.
Donogh McCormac held Cloghphilip Castle in 1600. In that year his stepbrother died. Cormac oge’s son, Charles, must have redeemed the mortgage for
he surrendered all the lands to the Crown, and secured a regrant in 1622. A
Royal Patent grants to Charles “Cartie”, the castle, town and lands of Cloghroe,
etc., on condition that he payed a chief rent of cast of hawks, yearly or £6 13s.
4d., and that he held the King in capite by military service at 1/20 part of a
knight’s fee.
Charles McCarthy had other lands in Muskerry and resided at Castlemore,
near Crookstown. He died without issue in 1641 having previously entailed his
estates to his uncle, Teige McCarthy of Ballea Castle, now Carrigaline.
The McCarthy estates in Co. Cork were declared confiscated on account of
their part in the struggle of 1641-1652.
In the Cromwellian Government “Survey of Muskerry” the lands of Cloghphilip
were valued at £140 a year. The town-lands included were Cloghphilip,
Kilnamacky, Coolflugh, Dromnabullogy, Knocknacarrihy and Cloghroe. The
ruins of a castle existed on the lands of Cloghphilip of an early Angle-Norman
structure, erected within an Irish Rath by Ralph de Guinis.
Teige McCarthy was another son of Sir Cormac McTeige of Blarney, who left
in his will Ballea, Ballygarvan and other lands in Kerricurrihy. He joined with
Carew in attacking the Spaniards at Kinsale but when O’Neill arrived from the
north he deserted Carew, and went over to the Irish side. When all was lost he
fled to Carrigaphorka Castle and from there wrote to Carew desiring a pardon
and safe conduct to Cork, where he would prove that Sir Cormac McDermod,
his cousin, and Lord of Muskerry had secret correspondence with the Spaniards
and their Irish allies. His offer was accepted, and he was later restored to his
lands. He died at his residence Ballea Castle in 1636.
His son, Charles, died in 1640 without issue and was succeeded by his brother
Dermod. When the Civil War broke out in England, Dermod joined the Royal
army there. When Sir Arthur Aston in 1648 brought over part of that army to
Ireland, Desmond McCarthy came as a cavalry leaded. Next year he was slain
by the Cromwellian forces at the massacre of Drogheda.
When the lands of Muskerry were restored to the Earl of Clancarthy, under the
Act of Settlement, he was bound to give leases at low rents to the descendants
of those who had held lands in 1641.
Charles McCarthy, who obtained the lease was probably his grandson; a son of
either Dermod, Owen or Teige oge McCarthy. He became a Colonel in the army
of James 11., and was a member of the 1689 Parliament. More fortunate than
his chief, the Earl of Clancarthy, he obtained the benefit of the Article of the
Treaty of Limerick and in the reign of William and Mary had retained
possession of Cloghroe, the castle and lands of Cloghphilip, etc. He was interred
in Kilcrea Friary.
Denis McCarthy, a son to Colonel Charles, succeeded to the Cloghroe estates.
He married in 1728, Mary, daughter of Sir Richard Meade of Ballintubber. She
brought him £2,500 fortune but there were debts of £4,000 on the lands. In the
marriage settlement, lands were made over to trustees for his wife’s benefit.
Denis McCarthy died intestate. His widow successfully claimed the jointure
lands. There were three sons: Charles, Justin and Richard, with one daughter.
Justin succeeded to the lands but remained unmarried. His sister, Elizabeth
married in 1756, Captain Capel, who fought on the English side at Fontenoy,
where he lost an eye.
Elizabeth was in Bristol with her husband in 1761, when Justin wrote to her
from Cloghroe House that he had 500 acres of land that year not let to tenants.
He had 200 men employed, as he wrote (August) and there were four fiddlers
and two helpers playing as they were just sitting down to dinner.
He made several wills. In one he left 20 guineas to his natural son Denis
McCarthy and his lands to his cousin Charles McCarthy More. In the latest will
the lands went to Captain Capel and his wife but it was never signed. The
Capels’ claim was contested. The dispute finished in the House of Lords in
favour of the Capels. The Capels had two daughters, co-heiresses to the estate.
Jane Capel married Robert McCarthy of Carrignabhfear in 1784, and conveyed
her portion to him. The other married the notorious Thomas Judkin Fitzgerald of
Tipperary. He was High Sheriff there in 1798. A special Act of Parliament was
passed to indemnify him against his outrages. The history of his life and loyalty,
wrote Dr. Madden, “is written in legible characters upon the backs of his
countrymen.”
Ursdele, in 1820 states: “Cloghroe is the seat of Joseph Capel Fitzgerald, son of
Sir Thomas Judkin Fitzgerald.”
Fitzgerald inherited Cloghroe from his mother, the daughter of Betty McCarthy
and Captain Capel.
When Capel died in 1800 his remains were conveyed to the Shanaclogh
before removal to the Chanal vault of St. Finbar’s Cathedral. The Shanaclogh
has been described as an elevated mound (with moat), north of Cloghroe House,
containing a brick-arched recess with a finely cut and moulded stone stairs.
There was also a foundation of a tower, entered by a narrow passage.
In 1892 the four walls of the castle still remained. In 1910 an observer
remarked on the beauty of the windows in the ruins. In 1949 the windows were
no longer there, and the remains of the former castle have practically
disappeared.
The above article by J.T. Collins originally appeared in the Blarney Annual.
Please note: The illustrated lecture for Thursday March 7th 2013 at 8.00 p.m.
will be presented by Mr. John O’Connell of Donoughmore History Society. It

Blarney is getting ready for the Year of the Gathering
Blarney Chamber of Commerce, under the guidance of Eamon Pitts, has invited over 200 businesses around the world which have Blarney
in their name to come to visit the original Blarney this year. Over half these businesses are pubs or restaurants called The Blarney Stone or
Blarney Castle, which are the centres for first and second generation emigrants in America or Australia
(but there are Blarney Stone pubs in Germany, Spain and the Phillippines among others).
They have also complied a programme of events happening in Blarney this year, which will be added to as the year moves on and more
plans are confirmed. This programme is shown here. Two of the events are featured on the national website of Gathering events; these are
the international soccer school for players between 12 and 16, organised by Blarney United in July and the Inniscarra gathering at
Ballyanly on the last weekend in June.

The January Blarney Person of the Month is Martin O’Shea
The January 2013 Blarney
Person of the Month is popular
local man Martin O’Shea.
As his nominee told us, “Martin has been one of the
driving forces behind the community of Blarney for
the past 40 years. From sport to community work,
Martin was always the first man to hold his hand up
when there was help needed. A cyclist in his day, he
kept the family tradition alive by bringing the once
famous Blarney ‘International’ 3 day cycle event to
the village, this brought great financial rewards to
the area.
More recently, the village once again had the
honour of a major cycle race when the An Post Ras
finished a stage here two years ago. This again was
all thanks to Martin, and a select few others, and
once again it was of great benefit to the village.”
Martin’s name now goes forward to the overall award of Blarney Person of The Year Award 2013 which
will be announced at a ceremony in Jan 2014.

Community Links work
By Alex Herlihy
As part of the transition year programme the 4th years are taking
part in community links. Working with The Cope Foundation is
one of these options. Each week a number of 4th years meet up
with members of Cope, and together they form a drama
workshop.
At the end of a five week period work will begin on a show.
The students have many ideas and so do the members, to date
considerations have included Jack and the Beanstalk, but with a
twist, and they would like to incorporate Sminky Shorts into the
show to add comedy.
As the group is only in it’s infancy they have yet to start work
on the show so for now they have been doing drama exercises to
get to know each other and to prepare themselves for the stage.
Transi ti on Year Drama
By Aoife Cotter
The drama students in transition year have been practising
for the past few weeks on their play for a competition in
Macroom, which took place on February 4th.
They performed their version of ‘The Case Of The Count
Formally Known As Dracula’, with the help of teacher Ms. Lucey.
As we went to print the news came into the school that the
students had qualified for the nationals. Congratulations!
Students retreat to Killavullen
By Pearse O'Donoghue
The transition years recently went to the Nano Nagle
centre in Killavullen. We went to school as normal in
our school tracksuits with our bags packed full of
sleeping bags and sweets. We had organised lifts
down to the centre with each other’s parents and
two teachers offered to bring students as well.
My class was the first to go and we were very excited. We
didn’t know what was in store for us because the teachers
didn’t know and last years TY’s wouldn’t tell us anything!
I squeezed into the car with my friends and we headed off
towards the centre. Half an hour later we arrived squashed
and stiff. We waited in a room where we watched a DVD
while waiting for a few people who had gotten lost on the
way. Eventually we were brought into a big room with a
candle on the floor and a few bibles, there was an audible sigh
from the class.
We were told not to worry and said a quick prayer,
contrary to what people thought it was going be, we all ended
up having a great time, playing games, doing plays and
feeding the donkeys!

When a recent opinion poll of personal priorities
placed spirituality and religion in 119th place out
of 119 you could be forgiven for doubting that
church events can still be packed out.
But that was the experience of the Church of Ireland Union of
Parishes in Blarney, Ballincollig and Inniscarra as a number of
their festival events last year, Connect 2012, were bursting at the
seams. Encouraged by this, everyone is asked to ‘Follow their
Hearts’ to Connect 2013.
So for food and music lovers there is a great night out in the
Blarney Castle Hotel with local musician and singer David
Backhouse. For dog lovers and their canine companions, there is
a special tea party, and for parents there is a family Fun Morning
in Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal, Blarney, where children can play to
their hearts content. And for those whose hearts are heavy, and
there are many these days, then there is a special service of
Wholeness and Healing at Inniscarra Church, Canon’s Cross.
There is so much more, and It all begins on Saturday 9th
February in Ballincollig Shopping Centre where there will be
balloons and crafts for the children, and the full programme will
be available, or go to www.connect.2013

Gum Disease!
You may be aware that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss
today, but did you know that gum disease is linked to heart disease and
strokes, pregnancy problems such as low birth weight, diabetes and
respiratory disease? It may be more serious than you think.
Gum disease is inflammation of the tissues which support the teeth
and attach them to the jaw. It arises when plaque and tartar build up on
the teeth. Plaque can be removed with careful toothbrushing and
flossing. Tartar forms when plaque is hardened by minerals such as
calcium present in saliva. Tartar has to be removed professionally by
your dentist or hygienist. Smoking also has a very harmful effect on the
gums. Every smoker has gum disease but some smokers are affected
worse than others.
You may not notice the gum disease until it is quite advanced.
Therefore, it is important to visit your dentist regularly and to be aware
of the following signs: red swollen gums, bleeding gums, bad breath,
bad taste, gum recession, teeth starting to drift apart, teeth starting to
loosen.
What can you do to help prevent/treat gum disease? Thoroughly and
gently brush your teeth and gums for 2 to 4 minutes twice a day using a
fluoride toothpaste. Clean between the teeth with floss or interdental
toothbrushes. Visit your dentist regularly for a check up and a
professional clean to remove plaque and tartar. At your next visit, why
not ask your dentist or hygienist how best to keep your teeth clean? It
could save your teeth and improve your health!
Medical Card and PRSI patients are entitled to a free check-up once
a year. Medical Card patients are also entitled to free emergency
treatment.

Donoughmore Macra
Donoughmore Macra had a quiet start to 2013. The club
entered two teams in the Muskerry Round of Club Question
Time; unfortunately neither was successful in reaching the
national stages of the competition. The club’s Capers team
fared better in their march to the All-Ireland final, emerging
victorious from their semi-final held in Capt. Murphy
Memorial Hall, Tullow on Sat 19th. They beat off
competition from Wicklow, Carlow and Tipperary and will
go on to compete in the All-Ireland Final, which was held in
the Eire Óg GAA Pavilion, Ovens at the start of the month.
Inniscarra-Plougonven twinning
A group from the Inniscarra area will be travelling to the beautiful town of
Plougonven near Roscoff in Brittany this Easter for one week, departing on
31st March (Easter Saturday). They will be hosted by families and there will
be lots of events and fun, plus time to explore the wonderful Breton
countryside and coast. Theidea of the Inniscarra-Plougonven twinning is
simple, but it works like magic. Every two years or so, a group makes the
ferry crossing and is hosted on the ‘other side’. This is a people centred
twinning - it's all about families and friends, events, and a constant round of
invitations to people's homes. Two years later, the process is reversed, and
the voyagers become the hosts. So, if you go to Brittany this Easter, you
could expect to be part of the hosting in 2015. Being involved in the
twinning is also a great way to meet your own neighbours!

Following on from meetings of Catholic lay people in Dublin, Cork and Galway, promoted
by the Association of Catholic Priests of Ireland, a very successful gathering of up to 60
people took place in Blarney on Wednesday January 9th 2013.
The meeting was facilitated by Daithi o
hAoidh, a member of Ballinaspig Parish
Faith in Action Group.
The aim of the meeting was to allow the catholic
faithful from the Blarney/Inniscarra area the
opportunity to dialogue over their
particular cares and concerns with regard to faith
matters.
As it was an occasion for dialogue the attendees
were formed into smaller groups and Daithi put
the question to them as to why they were here.
There was a huge diversity of answers....
People being curious.
A feeling of being disconnected and alienation
from the church.
Fears that the faith could be lost and concern
about our young
people.
A sense of helplessness that lay people are not
being listened to.
Upset that the teachings of Vatican 11 were not
being
implemented.
Concern that no plans were being made for the
future.
A feeling of lack of leadership.
Some women expressed feelings of being
disconnected from the Church.
Concern over lack of accountability at every
level in the Church.
Concern about the treatment of priests and the
silencing of priests.
Added to all this was the huge sense of energy
FINANCIAL
PROBLEMS.....
STRESS.....
LAWSUITS.....
NO HOPE?
and concern for the faith.
People were interested and positive but were left
frustrated. They wanted to contribute something,
however small.
After a very healthy and positive feed back, the
groups were then asked what changes should
happen?
Here the answers were focused into a few main
areas, firstly the main areas of administration,
people wanted more lay involvement at every
level in the church from Parish to Diocesan to
National level. Many were impressed by the
structures of the Church of Ireland in terms of
openness and approachability at all levels. The
involvement should not be token involvement
but real and meaningful. There should be a real
connection between all existing groups and the
clergy and a huge desire to connect with the new
bishop was felt. In the area of education, it was
felt that more should be done in the area of
Bible study groups, adult faith development and
liturgical formation. A hunger exists that is not
being met at present. In the area of prayer people
expressed an interest in more opportunities for
different types of prayer. In the area of liturgy
again, people felt a desire for more lay
involvement with an emphasis on including
young people. Some felt that some of the old
traditional kinds of worship should be
encouraged.
The feeling of the group was the the Church is
now dealing with a well educated, well
informed, articulate people and they deserve to
be treated as such.
The final part of the evening addressed the issue
of what could be done and each group was asked
to come up with three suggestions.
Express our faith, give witness and continue to
pray.
To form ourselves into a group and to continue
what has begun at this meeting.
One woman offered to organise tea and biscuits
after Mass.
To organise to meet with priests and the new
Bishop to share the concerns and suggestions
expressed.
To explore the formation of Parish Pastoral
Council.
Get involved in local liturgy groups and help
implement some of the suggestions made at the
meeting.
The overriding feeling at the end of the meeting
was that people were very pleased to have had
this opportunity for dialogue about their Church
and their Faith. There was a huge sense of desire
and wish to become more actively involved in
the life and future of the Church. One comment
stays with me from a women who said, ‘She
wanted herself and her children to feel proud of
her Church.’
It was decided to hold another meeting in
February.

DRIPSEY COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
AND AVONDHU BLACKWATER
PARTNERSHIP SAY THANK YOU
Time flies as the old adage goes and in the case of
Dripsey Community Association Handyman
Michael Dunlea this is certainly true. It is hard to
believe that nearly a year has gone by since Michael
started his rounds in and around Dripsey.
Michael is employed by Avondhu Blackwater Partnership under
the Government Tús Initiative and placed with Dripsey Community
Association. Michael began work in March 2012 and since has been
a regular sight around Dripsey. The Handyman Service is provided
to senior citizens in the area and covers those jobs that are too big
for senior citizens to do by themselves and too small to call in a
professional.
The types of work covered by Michael are gardening, grass
cutting, hedge cutting, general garden and household maintenance.
A painting service both indoor and outdoor is also available. All
those leaking taps that have been dripping for years are now a thing
of the past thanks to Michael.
According to Denis Mc Carthy (Chairperson of Dripsey
Community Association), “The Handyman that D.C.A, have through
Avondhu Blackwater Partnership is a valued and appreciated person
to all that he works with. Not only a way for senior citizens to have
little jobs and tasks done but is also a great source of company to
the people.”
Under the Tús Initiative participants have a one year contract so
unfortunately Michael will finish at the beginning of March.
Avondhu Blackwater Partnership and D.C.A. would like to thank
Michael for the dedication to his work and for the wonderful
company he has been for all the people of the area.
A new Handyman, Timothy O’ Shea, will take over from Michael
and if you wish to avail of the service please contact Denis
McCarthy or any member of the Community Association.

Prize Giving.
Current Cork Captain Patrick Cronin presented victorious teams
their medals and gear bags at the annual prize giving evening, held
at the Ramada Hotel. There was a huge turn out and a very enjoyable evening appeared to be had by all. Other guests included
County Chairman Bob Ryan and Rebel Og P.R.O Cian O’Brien.
The future is certainly looking brighter for the club.
Under 16 County League Final.
Our Under 16’s lost narrowly to Valley Rovers in the Under 16
Muskerry News
League County Final held at C.I.T grounds. The team took an early
lead and made life uncomfortable for a fancied Valleys side. A second half goal was the difference between the sides at the final whistle. Inniscarra players can take great pride in the effort and commitment shown although the team was clearly disappointed to lose.
Seamus Noonan Puc Fada Cup.
For the first year the Seamus Noonan Cup was presented to the
winners of the annual puc fada. In wintery conditions there was a
large turn out. Members of the victorious County Winning side of
1975 were special guests. Intermediate hurler, John O’Brien captained the winning team. All monies raised were donated to local
charities. Thanks to everyone for their support.
Training.
Most teams have recommenced training for the upcoming season.

Coaches at the relaunch of the Academy, the Academy takes place
every Saturday morning from 9.45-11am and caters for boys aged from
5-10 years of age. The Academy has been running since 2OO2 and
some of those players are now breaking through to the Junior and
Senior teams, Blarney United now have five adult teams from Senior
down to our under 17 team. We also cater for up to a Dozen schoolboy
teams with two teams competeing at each age group.
Blarney United also have two Schoolgirls teams
playing in the Cork schoolgirls league at U14 and U12. We also have
the girls Academy which takes place every Monday night we are
National Cup heartbreak for both our Senior and
under 14 teams in recent weeks.
Senior team travelled to Dublin to take on one of the favourites for the
intermediate cup Tolka Rovers, the senior team is a mix of youth and
experience and while our more senior and experienced players
stoodout on the day our younger lads will have learned a lot and know
the level that needs to be reached if we are to be competitive again at
national level. We lost 3-0 on the day but were only one down with ten
minutes left and conceded two late goals when pushing on and looking
for an equaliser. Aiden leahy, Ray O Leary, Alan Weldon and Pat
Keane stoodout on the day.
U14s went out of the National Cup at the last 32 stage when they lost
out 2-0 at home to Thomastown United from Kilkenny, two first half
goals was enough to see the away team through to the last 16 . Good
performances on day the from Captain Jack Moore Brennan, Declan
Hanlon and Brian Walshe was not enough for the Blarney lads who
played much better in the second half and had a few chances that could
have brought them back into the game but it was not to be. The players
and Management would like to thank everyone for the great support
they had on the day.

Dripsey GAA celebrate under age successes
Report & pics Mike English
Parents, grandparents and friends
of Dripsey’s successful under age
teams of 2011 and 2012 attended
the club’s medal presentation
function at Oriel House Hotel
recently.
Among under age committee members
present were Diarmuid O’Riordan,
Mairead O’Sullivan and Valerie
O’Riordan who, together with mentors
and coaches, were lauded for their work
on behalf of the young people of Dripsey
by club Chairman, John Feeney. The two
Mark O’Sullivans were presented with
special tokens by team captains, Shane
Godsil and Jack Casey, in recognition of
their work as team coaches.
John Purcell, representing Rebel Og,
said the club should be proud of their
achievements to date and he
complimented them on capturing a
number of County Championships in
recent years.
Special guest was Cork Senior Hurler,
ENROLMENT NOW BEING TAKEN
FOR FREE PRE-SCHOOL PLACES
Tom Kenny, who encouraged the players
to enjoy the game and to practice as often
as possible. He revealed that he was
coached at Farranferris College by Canon
Michael O’Brien who advised players to
do special skills training on their weak
side by hitting from the left if they were
good on the right and vice versa. This he
said would help them enjoy the game to
the full.
He congratulated the players and
mentors on their victories but pointed out
that giving of your best on all occasions
was all that was expected.
“Defeats and victories will come your
way and be forgotten in time but many of
the friendships made along the way will
last forever,” he concluded.

Aoife Murphy from Blarney and Daniela Reicke from Cork City
were among the first drivers in the country to receive the new
licence, having recently passed their driving test.
Almost 6,000 new plastic card licences have issued to drivers
following the changeover from paper licences to plastic card
licences on 19th January. The introduction of the plastic card
licence is one aspect of an $ Directive to upgrade and standardise
all licences across the $; previously, as many as 100 different
types of licence were in operation throughout the $.
Minister %aradkar said the new licence is more secure and more
convenient, and also meets Ireland’s obligations under the $
Directive
AThe new driving licence is an important part of this
Government’s ongoing commitment to road safety. It will help to
eliminate licence fraud, ensure that motorists are properly trained
and licensed, and keep unlicensed drivers off our roads. It’s more
modern and more convenient. It’s also recognised throughout the
$, so Irish road users will enjoy the benefits and protections
which drivers already have in other $ countries.B
AThe RSA and the Motor Tax Offices have done sterling work in
making the new application process as easy as possible for
motorists. I want to thank the RSA for their hard work, and for
meeting the $ deadline on schedule, without requiring additional
xchequer funding.B

I have suffered on and off with back
pain for 50 years. When I was a
child I fell from the third story of a
building, and because I felt alright
after the fall I wasn’t treated for any
serious injury. I have also had
constant pain in my leg and my feet
for a lot of years, the pain moved
from my knee down into my calf and
into my feet.
Later in life, maybe 10 years ago, I ruptured
my Achilles tendon while playing badminton
and had surgery to correct this.
My hobby is sport, I love to go out on the
golf course twice a week, and do the full 18
holes. Swinging the golf club sent sharp darts
of pain right through my lower back, and it was
always tight. I was in almost constant pain. I
would suffer from cramps and muscle pain into
my legs, always after badminton and sport. I
just didn’t enjoy sport as much anymore.
I eventually made the decision to see a
Chiropractor to see if anything could be done. I
wasn’t expecting miracles, but hoped at best that
I would get improvement and be able to manage
my pain and be able to enjoy sport.
So, I saw Dr. Eric Kelly in Glanmire
Phone 087 2330398
THANK YOU
CHIROPRACTIC
Chiropractic Clinic in April 2011. The first visit
involved a very detailed history of my problems,
and a thorough physical and neurological exam.
I had x-rays taken the same day of my lower
back, and Dr. Kelly also did a Gaitscan to
examine how my feet were working from the
bottom up. I was diagnosed with having
mechanical joint dysfunction, and it turned out
that I have one leg anatomically shorter than the
other. I was never told this, even when I had
surgery for my Achilles tendon. Nobody ever
examined my whole body as a single unit.
Dr. Kelly talked me through how he would be
able to help me with both issues, and he dealt
Muskerry News
with the back pain initially, letting me know in
lay terms how he would be able to relieve the
pain, and eventually eliminate it by adjusting my
lumbo-pelvic and lower limb regions. I was
quite nervous at first, but found the adjustments
to be absolutely fine.
Secondly, Dr. Kelly advised that I should use
orthotic insoles to balance the anatomical leg
length difference, and from the Gaitscan he was
able to prescribe a custom made pair. These
were fitted within 3 weeks of my first
appointment.
I genuinely started to feel better within 2 to 3
weeks of regular chiropractic visits, and I can
honestly say that by the end of my treatment I
felt like a new man.
Since seeing Dr. Kelly, I have lived with little
or no pain, something I didn’t realise I could do.
Sport is my time out, and I can play now
without worrying about being in severe pain
afterwards. Chiropractic isn’t something I
knew a lot about before I became a patient, but I
now genuinely believe in its benefits. There’s
nothing to be nervous of, it’s incredible that I
have lived most of my life with pain, and
learned to manage it when I could have had Dr.
Kelly help me a long time ago.
