Hello lovely parents!
This Friday (yes, tomorrow!), we are excited to be
hosting our first Twilight Market in a very long time.
The festivities will start as soon as school finishes at
3:30pm.
Please join us for a relaxing afternoon. There is a
variety of stalls with lots of fun things to buy, eat and
make!
There will be chai and some treats to eat, but feel free
to bring along some food for your family to enjoy as
well.

I included a note in last week’s newsletter about considerate
parking in the environs of the school. Safe parking not only
keeps the neighbours happy, but most importantly, helps to
ensure the safety of all children – including yours!

However, whilst speaking recently to neighbour about her
frustration in relation to school parking, the point was made that
normally intelligent, caring people become ‘someone else’
when they get behind the wheel of a car. In our school’s case,
I have to agree.

So, at this time of year, when everyone is busy and there is
some potential to take a shortcut, to rush, to nick in in front of
someone else, or to risk someone else’s wellbeing, please
pause… and THINK.

The following are excerpts from reflections written by
the Junior School Council.

CAN YOU HELP?
I know I also asked last week, but I have had no offers, and am
hoping that someone may be able to assist us by doing this
small job.
You may have seen the rusty old cage that is attached to the
end of the 2014 Prep portable. In the past, it was used to store
gas bottles for an old heater, which has since been removed.
The cage is now of no use, and I would dearly love to remove it,
as it tends to be a hazard. I think it simply needs to be
unscrewed from the wall.
Please let me know if you can assist us in this regard.

Congratulations to all students for their effort and
enthusiasm and thankyou to all staff for supporting
these initiatives.

Millie
At first I thought the JSC was going to be a lay back
club where all you do is fundraisers but it is much more
than that. It has been a professional environment as
well as being fun. I suggested the idea of The Bake Off
and was so proud on the day that my idea had happened.
After that I knew the true meaning of being on the JSC,
to make our school a better place.
Stephie
At the start of the year, I was really excited to be a part
of something big, but at the same very nervous. Being
on the JSC has boosted my confidence in speaking in
front of people. I didn’t get to do all my ideas but I
helped other JSC members with theirs and I think that is
a good example of teamwork. I am extremely thankful
for all that I have learned and the fun I’ve had. I do hope
people will remember us, not as the first all-girl JSC, but
as the very successful, first all-girl, JSC.

Principal
When I first came to the JSC, I have to admit that I
thought it would be a lot easier and that there wouldn’t
be so much effort needed. I have enjoyed JSC, creating
fun, exciting days and fundraisers for the school.
Looking back on the day that I gave my speech to be
elected makes me smile. I was a small, frightened mouse
who put on a brave voice to give my input on what I
wanted to happen. To those of you who think ‘she
hasn’t done what she said in her speech’, I apologise. I
tried very hard and worked as a team. Thanks everyone
for being supportive.

In February this year, a very excited group of newly
elected JSC representatives attended a student
leadership conference in the city. They joined with
hundreds of other student leaders to get an idea of what
could be expected of them in their new role. The main
messages that everyone took home was that leadership
is about being of service, (about checking in with those
they are representing and seeing what their needs are
and not just doing the things that the leaders wanted to
do) and about delegation, that they didn’t need to do it
all themselves.
It has been inspiring to see the blossoming of student
leadership on a large scale this year at Briar Hill. Not
only have we had the JSC and the Green Team
(Environmental leadership) we’ve had student led clubs
and the beginnings of School House Captains.
My favourite part of being in the JSC was being a leader
and being able to use my initiative. We worked as a
team and were very good at getting over challenges.
We worked hard and were persistent. One of my goals,
at the start of the year, was to be able to speak in public.
I was so nervous at the start but I am much better at
talking in front of people now. I am so happy and it has
been a great privilege to have been on the JSC. I have
liked being part of something big!

Overall I have enjoyed the JSC very much. This is my
second year as a representative and I loved it. We had
so many ideas and were extremely enthusiastic when
planning all of them. The hard part was actually making
some of them happen. Even though we had some
challenges along the way, this has been an amazing
opportunity and journey. It was all totally worth it!

Maya
Being part of the Junior School Council was a privilege
for me. When I first started I thought it was going to be
much easier than it was. Being a JSC member rapidly
improved my leadership skills and I now realise that it’s
not all about fundraising. I hope I have served the
school well and I am very proud of my fellow JSC
members. Thank you.
Leila
Being a part of the JSC has been a privilege and a lot of
fun. My favourite thing was the feeling I got coming to
school on a fundraising day and seeing everyone dressed
up and having fun. Sometimes it was a bit of a challenge
thinking of new ideas but once we got started we were
good at it. I hope our school enjoyed this year and all
that we did because I did.
ASPHALT NOTES…
Just letting everyone know that for OH&S
reasons, arrangements have been made to
remove the asphalt underneath the oak tree on
Monday, 23 December – after school finishes.
Work on the community outdoor classroom will
commence in the 2014 school year.
Once again, we thank the Eltham and District
Community Bank branch of the Bendigo Bank,
for the funding that has made this possible.

When I did my election speech I was so scared but I
wanted to be elected so that I could help, not just our
school, but people in my community who were in need.
It makes me feel happy that we could raise money to
help them. I realised that being on the JSC was not as
easy as I first thought but we worked as a team which
made it easier. I tried my hardest to make school fun for
everyone and it has been a great privilege to have been a
JSC rep.
