The MonteGrande Dam
The project has multiple purposes, combining in its use for
human consumption, agriculture, irrigation, power generation,
flood control and other uses of the reservoir such as fishing and
ecotourism. The use of water resources of the Rio Yaque del Sur,
through the construction of a dam in Monte Grande, will regulate
the bottom of the basin for the following purposes and benefits:
1.Ensure water supply for the Southwest regional aqueduct
(Barahona, Bahoruco and Independence), giving it 2.00 m3 / s
by gravity and allowing for energy savings in the operation of the
aqueduct.
2. Optimized managing water to meet irrigation demands
3. Reduce energy consumption in the operation of irrigation
systems
4. Increase productivity of currently irrigated land and per capita
income
of
farmers;
5. Increase irrigation area 44.594 hectares (706.815 tasks) within
irrigation systems Neyba, Tamayo and Barahona, incorporating
economic activity 3.907 farmers in the new land brought under
irrigation
6. Improve sanitation in the provinces of Barahona and
Independencia Bahoruco by regulating the water supply to meet
demand
for
water
supply
in
the
Southwest
7. Mitigate damage caused by flooding of the Rio Yaque del Sur
in the lower, reducing risks and loss of life, property, crop losses
and damage to infrastructure.
