REVIEWING THE 2006 MEETING
DePauw’s defense limited host Rhodes to just 40
rushing yards and a pair of field goals and Jeremiah Marks
rushed for 114 yards as the Tigers won the Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference contest by a 27-6 score.
The win was DePauw’s third straight and lifted its
overall record to 5-1 and it’s SCAC mark to 2-1. Rhodes
dropped to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC.
DePauw’s defense set the tone early when end Luis
Davila sacked Rhodes quarterback Mark Oliver and
forced a fumble that Rob Farrow scooped up and scored
from the seven to make it 6-0 just 6:23 into the contest.
The Tigers made it 13-0 late in the first quarter when
Marks scored the first of three touchdowns on a 4-yard
run with 3:30 remaining. The Lynx cut the margin to 13-3
when Chris Catalanotto booted a 37-yard field goal with
13:20 left in the half.
Catalanotto cut the gap to 13-6 with a 32-yard field
goal with 8:01 remaining in the third. Rhodes started a
third-quarter drive near midfield and drove to the DePauw
29, but the Tigers stopped them on fourth-and-one.
Late in the third the Tigers embarked on their longest
drive of the game when they started from their own 28.
Spud Dick completed consecutive passes to Bryan Mulligan, Bryan Berman and Stephen Horrighs to move the
Tigers to the Rhodes 44.
Marks capped off the series with a 1-yard run on
fourth-and-goal which pushed DePauw’s lead to 20-6
with 9:21 remaining in the contest.
The Tigers’ defense stepped up again and forced the
Lynx to punt. DePauw started on the Rhodes 43 and
Marks eight times including the final one for a 2-yard
score that made it 27-6 with only 1:30 remaining.
Marks topped the 100-yard mark for the third time
this season and the 13th time in his career with 114 yards
on 28 tries. He moved into third place on DePauw’s alltime rushing list with 2,507 yards.
Dick completed seven of 12 passes for 60 yards, while
Abe Winkle totaled 36 yards on three-of-five passing.
Chris Gines and Mulligan each had three catches.
Rhodes managed just 40 rushing yards in 29 attempts
with Tyler Lake totaling 47. Oliver completed 11 of 18
passes for 124 yards with four each going to Lake and
Justin Sealand.
Dustin Hertel and Andy Brandstatter led the Tigers
with nine tackles each, while Hertel’s two sacks for 20
yards moved him just one sack away from tying Doug
Lowery’s DePauw career mark of 30.
Jake McCart paced Rhodes with 15 stops with Mark
Young adding 10. Marc Mattioli totaled nine tackles
including three sacks.
