VENDOR VIEW: HOSTED NETWORKS
OFFER RURAL OPERATORS ADVANTAGES AS THEY MIGRATE TO 4G/LTE
By Andrew Silberstein, Senior Vice
President and General Manager, Services,
Globecomm Systems Inc.
Hosted network strategies are a sensible option for resource-conscious operators
that want to successfully migrate to 4G/LTE
while managing day-to-day business.
Hosted networks can bring more than the
network, providing additional engineering
talent, improved economics on equipment
and reduction of the effort relating to vendor
and technology management. Rural operators, which typically don’t have excess
human and cash resources to take on a
major migration, can benefit from hosted

approaches through the 4G/LTE transition
period and in the long term.
Accelerate, De-Risk and Expand
The shift from 3G to 4G/LTE is significant for any operator, and particularly for
rural operators that must scrutinize factors
like expense, risk and business disruption.
The move to 4G signals a transition into a
more robust set of services, placing new
demands on operators’ front offices and
requiring greater focus on customer engagement. Operators need to focus on caring for
customers while introducing them to the
new services 4G/LTE enables. But 4G network complexity can distract from those
NTE: Digicell has launched and successfully added Unimax devices into the handset line up of the largest tier-two carriers in
the United States. In addition, Unimax
devices are now offered by premier
MVNOs such as Public Mobile and Virgin

greatest challenge in the year ahead?
NTE: Competition with larger OEMs is
always the biggest challenge. Our goal is

your device in ways you never thought possible! I use mine in my vehicle to easily
view and charge, but I also use it while riding my bike to monitor my messages. It has
made my iPhone even more available and
conveniently accessible.”
The Connect Case offers protection
from everyday wear and tear, dependable
shock-absorption, and a unique design that
keeps your iPhone’s features accessible at
all times. The top opens for easy access and
snaps securely closed with an innovative
flex-hinge, and its slim design allows
“dockability” in the case. Included with the
case is a removable Connect Clip that
allows you to attach your phone to pockets,
straps, or belts. It also comes with a convenient carry clip, and a custom-designed,
anti-fingerprint screen protector. Available

priorities.
As rural operators set their 4G/LTE
migration strategy, hosted services should
be considered as a means to accelerate, derisk and expand access to critical resources.
Hosted networks offer advantages in time to
market; phased deployment; cost certainty;
simplified migration both up the ‘G’ levels
and from GSM to CDMA; and improved
economics relating to equipment and software licenses.
A hosted provider can represent a buying collective, creating economies of scale
across its customer base that have more
leverage than an operator may generate on
its own. The effort involved in acquiring
new network equipment and software
licenses can become the hosted providers’
responsibility, so internal teams aren’t
bogged down with RFPs, managing bidding
processes or negotiating one-off contracts.
Operators can preserve capital as a
result of not having to purchase and license
all their new 4G services and equipment.
Existing towers, which an operator likely
owns, can remain in use, but leased equipment―owned and operated by the hosting
provider―can be installed on them. Thus,
the operator can minimize its risks and perform a limited or phased rollout, measuring
at each step to ensure that actual customer
uptake matches projections.
Plan for a Phased Rollout
A phased approach is critical to success. A hosted provider should be able plan
and execute a phased 4G/LTE rollout. An
effective plan shows that a hosted provider
can be a true business partner and an expert
asset, not just a network services vendor.

to design cost efficient devices that people
will like―to make sure their handset experience will be enjoyable.
WW: Where is your current product
emphasis?
WW: Are you introducing any new products?
NTE: By the second quarter of 2012,
Digicell will launch the first military spec
rogue handset into the US market, in addition to larger screen androids with the latest technology.
NTE: Over the years our primary focus
has been mostly on handsets. However, we
see great growth with data products. Our
product lineup is beginning to illustrate
just that.

THE ‘SHOWROOMING’ PHENOMENON
AND HOW RETAILERS CAN FIGHT IT
Wireless World
Amazon became a thorn in the side of wireless retailers last fall, when it launched a
Black Friday “Penny-Pincher Sale,” putting
nearly 100 high-end smartphones on sale
for only a penny.
Just over a week later, the company
went even further: launching its Price
Check App and encouraging shoppers to
use the app to compare prices for items
while in-store and buy them on at a lower
price on Amazon.com via their mobile
devices.
Suddenly, the threat of “showrooming”―consumers visiting a brick-and-mortar store to see and try a product out before
buying it online from somebody
else―became a lot more imposing. Here
Alpha Technologies (Con’t. from p. 1)
MWS: 2011 was a successful year for
Alpha, with lots of growth, continued
factory expansion and increased U.S.based manufacturing. We continue to
focus on telecom (by expanding our
portfolio of NEBS certified products
and achieving TL 9000 certification) to
ensure our continued success with the
largest wireless carriers in North
America. Lastly, it was a great year as
we developed a wide array of new
products.
WW: What trends is Alpha seeing in
the wireless market?
was Amazon, explicitly promoting the practice.
Since then, the showrooming trend
continues to grow. A February 2012
ClickIQ survey found that 45.9 percent of
U.S. online shoppers research products instore, before eventually buying the product
online.
This trend has taken its toll on big electronics retailers like Best Buy, whose stock
dropped 40 percent in 2011. Retail experts
have attributed Best Buy’s recent struggles
to poor customer experiences, both in-store
and online.
In mid-January, Target was so fed up
with showrooming that it issued an urgent
letter to vendors, suggesting they create
tion from conventional macro cell sites
to more distributed architectures, to
maximize spectrum utilization and
increase capacity. This decentralization trend is leading to growth in
indoor and outdoor DAS deployment,
along with newer, non-traditional
architectures that place the radio closer and closer to the customer. This, in
turn, results in blended sites that
include both macro and distributed
components. We are also seeing the
proliferation of tower and pole-mounted radios and nodes.
WW: What technical challenges do
these trends present?
MWS: The introduction of LTE gets
the headlines, and rightfully so. But we
also see the tremendous demand for
data causing carriers to begin to transi-
MWS: Overlaying LTE on 3G and
even 2G networks requires multiple
voltages at the site, driving the need
for high efficiency DC-DC converters.

unique products for it
to carry so that it could
better compete with etailers like Amazon.
In response to the
showrooming trend, a
number of major retailers (including Sears,
Lowe’s, The Gap,
Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus) are equipping staff with smartphones, tablets and
mobile apps to provide better customer
service in-store. They are also installing
interactive retail displays to provide customers with access to product information
they are used to finding online.
“The key for brick-and-mortar retailers
is to create an engaging in-store experience
where users can interact with their content
in the store, not online with Amazon’s,”
says iQmetrix president and CEO
Christopher Krywulak.
For
brick-andmortar retailers, the
convenience of an inperson
transaction
remains significant. A
January 2012 survey by
the Pew Internet and
American Life Project
found that 35 percent of
respondents
bought
from the store location where they were
comparison shopping, versus 19 percent
who bought online and only 8 percent who
went to another store.
“To defeat showrooming, retailers
must go beyond a typical e-commerce
transaction: Offer a superior in-store experience―demonstrate value, convenience,
service, etc.―and let customers walk out
with the product they came to buy, not wait
all power, requiring changes in power
system configurations. The distributed
networks such as DAS require even
less power, and their solutions may be
either AC or DC. But they still require
battery backup, though not necessarily
as much as a BTS site. Since the sites
are closer to customers, the enclosures
must be as small as possible, aesthetically pleasing and functionally sound.
For indoor DAS networks, some carriers want to forego powering the nodes
with local power to avoid the proliferation of UPS and batteries, so they are
looking at using centralized power and

line power unit, called eLimiter TM,
which supplies -48Vdc to distant DAS
nodes. For the outdoor applications,
our new Te49 pole mount cabinet is
capable of housing a variety of AC and
DC power solutions, along with the
backup batteries. One of the new low
power DC solutions we are offering is
the CordexTM 48V 300W HP rectifier,
which can be configured in various
ways to provide the right amount of
power conversion. Lastly, for larger
LTE applications, we developed two
dual voltage products that power both
legacy and new base stations. Each of
these products is on display this year at
CTIA in booth 3919.
WW: What products has Alpha introduced to respond to these challenges?
MWS: For the indoor DAS applications, we have developed a nifty little

WEATHERPROOFING SOLUTIONS FOR
FIBER-FED TOWER NETWORKS
Thursday, May 10, 2012
By Stephen C. King, Wireless Applications
Engineer, 3M Communication Markets
Division
In fiber-to-the-antenna (FTTA) tower
systems, weatherproofing coaxial jumper
cable connections is critical to delivering
reliable mobile services. Protecting connection points at the remote radio unit
(RRU) and the antenna can help mobile
operators avoid costly repairs and down
time, ensure signal integrity and keep subscribers happy.
Water is the enemy of coaxial cable. It
can intrude into the cable through DIN
and/or N-type connectors and cause damage. One tiny drop of rain in the wrong
location can short circuit the conductor and
cause the signal to fail, resulting in a service outage. Operators don’t need to be
reminded that even a short service interrupStreamDialer (Con’t. from p. 1)

EL: Endstream continued to make
progress on the StreamDialer application,
including adding users to our beta program

tion can result in subscriber attrition.
Moisture build up can also wreak
havoc on a tower’s performance. The copper cable’s dielectric is typically made of an
open-cell foam, which can act like a
sponge, absorbing and retaining moisture.
Moisture encourages corrosion around the
connector, potentially leading to a scenario
where RF signals mix and generate passive
intermodulation (PIM) distortion. PIM can
interfere with neighboring frequencies,
prompting a host of quality, legal and regulatory headaches for the operator.
Traditional weatherproofing solutions
are often too bulky for new tower designs.
Fiber-fed tower architectures that incorporate multi-service and/or multiple-in, multiple out (MIMO) antenna configurations,
for example, have resulted in crowded connection points at the antenna and RRU.

than a day, saving thousands in installation costs. Other concealment structures
come on multiple pallets in many different pieces and with confusing instructions, often requiring a team of five or
six workers for multiple days to install.
WW: Beyond a competitive installed
cost, what else is important to consider
when purchasing a concealment?
MP: The quality of materials is very
important for concealments. If the
wrong materials are used and the signal
quality is degraded from the towers, cellular carriers will force you to tear down
the concealment and install something
that is approved. Peabody RFTC
Concealment materials have all been
tested for spectrums from 700 MHz to
32 GHz and have been approved by all
major cellular carriers. Our materials are
37
ble and easy to work with in all situations. We take pride in the way that we
do business and do what we say we
will do. This is the philosophy that I
started my company with 23 years ago,
and it applies to our largest partners all
the way down to the consumers that
use Nite Ize products every day.
WW: Where can our readers find out
more about your company?

transparent, meaning they allow for
almost the entire spectrum to pass
through with only the slightest decibelinsertion loss. Our standard products are
also Class I Flame Retardant and each
project is structurally engineered,
stamped and certified by a professional
engineer licensed in the state of the cell
site.
WW: At what point should Peabody
RFTC Concealment be brought into the
cellular tower construction process?
MP: We can work to build around your
current cellular tower or be brought in
from the beginning―which we recommend. Peabody Concealment can help
make recommendations on tower configurations and placements, which can
help save thousands of dollars in total
costs. We will work with you from start
to finish, ensuring your concealment is
functional and lasts for years to come.
