president’s message
Greetings 300 Fans.
Good stuff at Alamogordo Meet in Sept.
Rained and rained and rained. The day of the Barbi out at
the White Sand Dunes the clouds broke the sun was out, it
was beautiful I believe a good time was had by all with ample food to keep everyone happy. Beautiful clouds and the
White Sand Dunes offered photo ops galore. Then it rained
that night. The next day the clouds parted for the car show
with even more sun for the fun and frolic in the park.
Alameda Park is on the Main Street through the city. I
believe everyone in the city and a few communities around
stopped at the show and enjoyed. I still have not figured
out where the Rolls Royce came from. It looked a bit out of
place in the MoPar show. However welcome.
When you go to Alamogordo, Take lots of sun screen.
We had a hot time at the awards banquet. (Chuckle) So we
adjourned back to the Host Hotel for a good time in the
lobby. I walked in and notified I had 120 friends on the
way over but did not think they would fit in my room. And
we are going to party. Boy did I get some funny looks.
A very successful auction deemed us a good time. Good to
see Gary and Elana after there long absence.
I am sure all in attendance would all like to thank Bill and
Marilyn Allen for an excellent gathering of good friends.
This joint meet was more than a success. The Board of Directors of both clubs were all in attendance. This must have
been a first. So good to share the camaraderie once again.
June 3 to 6, 2015, SPARKS NEVADA. Nugget Hotel and
Casino 300 Classic. All Members of Chrysler 300 Club,
Inc. Chrysler 300 International. Inc. and WPC Club are
cordially invited to fully participate.
We will visit several private car collections in nearby Carson City and Gardnerville. Also The National Auto Museum in Reno. Summit Auto Parts had invited us to display
our brutes at there show. Our Car Show Saturday to be held
on the Victorian Square Plaza across the street for the Nugget Resort. Nugget Resort has a large parking lot for our
trucks with trailers also a RV Park on premis.
Register Early Please. Details will be revealed. More info on
the Web site. Thank you Steve & Lucette Simon
FALL 2015 MACUNGIE PA.
Rumor says this will be a huge show. Featuring the Chrysler 300 as the Star of the gathering. More info in the making. Thank You Tony Bavacqua, Mark Sounders., and Tony
Rinaldi. Thanks for taking time to enjoy Your Club.

editor’s notes
Happy winter time to everyone. I hope your cars are all
tucked away safely. Been foggy and winter like even here
in California.
We wanted to thank Danny Goss for his service as club
webmaster for the last few years. Thanks for all your help
Danny. John Holst has graciously accepted the position
and is already doing great. Please take a few minutes to
check out the new updated website and also John’s other
sites that are linked to the club website. I have had a few
requests for information like the Ross Roy salesmans
data book for 1960. I was able to scan those in and send
them to the members but John has also linked to them
on the webpage. This helps dramatically with the
interest and value of our beloved cars when we have the
information available. We will be looking to do more
of this. Please let me know what type of information
you would like to see posted online from the library. If
reasonable to do so, I will get it to John for the website.
I have had some feed back on the auctions section. Folks
like to see that in the magazine and I am happy I could
find a way to do it that without tracking each auction.
Thanks again to Kieth Martin’s magazines, Sports Car
Market and American Car Collector for allowing me to
put the information in here.

membership manager’s musings
During 2014 we welcomed 28 new members with 43 new 300’s for our registry. Further details may
be found in the secure section of our website at www.chrysler300clubinc.com User name: Dual354;
Password: Quad392.
At year end we had 480 members on our books as compared to 470 at the end of 2013. Extra special
thanks to those that renewed before being reminded, special thanks to those who responded promptly
to e-mail or snail-mail reminders and my personal thanks to those that eventually renewed or re-enlisted in response to my incessant reminders. It’s all good.
We are preparing a 2015 hard copy roster for distribution in early 2015.

RENO/SPARKS NEVADA JUNE 2015
45TH NATIONAL CHRYSLER 300 CLUB INC. MEET
Hosts are Steve Simon and Chuck Hill
By Steve Simon
We are returning to one of our favorite venues where we have had several shows in the past including our
national meet in 2008. Our event will be from June 3 through June 6, 2015.
Our host hotel will again be the Nugget Resort and Casino in Sparks, NV. The resort is right across the street
from the Victorian Square Plaza where we will be having our Car “Show and Shine” on Saturday June 6. The
Nugget is a complete resort with large rooms, gaming, restaurants, shows, shopping and secured parking for
our Brutes. The resort runs shuttles to and from the Reno airport and downtown Reno on a regular basis. They
will host our banquet in the beautiful pool banquet room overlooking the snowcapped eastern sierras.
Wednesday, June 3: Check in day which will begin in the afternoon. There will be a Hospitality suite for our
registered participants.
Thursday, June 4: We will meet at 9 AM and begin with a tour to Carson City and a visit to a large private car
collection. Then we will stop in the historic town of Genoa, the first settlement of NV (founded 1851). We will
have time for a short tour of the town which has some antique shops, gift shops, a nice museum and the first
thirst parlor (saloon) of NV. After our visit we will have lunch around 12:30 PM at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club.
The club house overlooks the golf course and the eastern sierra mountain range. We will then cruise into the
Carson Valley where we will see one, possibly two, other private car collections. After our auto eye candy is
finished, there will be a traditional Basque feast (dinner) at J. T. Restaurant and Bar in Gardnerville starting
between 6:00 to 6:30 PM. After dinner we will cruise back to the Nugget for the rest of the evening.
Friday, June 5: We will meet at 10 AM and will cruise to the National Automobile Museum in Reno, NV. We
will have a catered lunch in the banquet room of the museum. After the museum tour and lunch, you will have

Bootlegger Brute follow up from previous issue
“I have never sold a single one of them.”
Chapel Hill businessman and real estate appraiser P.H. Craig was talking about his treasured collection of old cars.
Visitors to his home are treated to a seemingly endless display of old automobiles, some fully restored, some at various
stages of renewal, and others awaiting the loving attention that Craig can give an old car.
Which is his favorite? It changes from day to day, but on the day I talked to him, his attention was fixed on a World War
II Jeep. “I call it the Bill Friday Jeep,” he told me. “It was exactly like one that the late President Friday used when he was
in the service and when he came by to see it, he got in and stayed for a long time.”
Friday asked Craig for a key so he could start the engine and drive the Jeep around. Craig had to explain that the Jeep’s
engine had not been restored and was not yet ready for driving.
“I am sorry I didn’t get it ready for him before he died.”
Craig also treasures a 1960 Chrysler 300-F. “Chryslers are not as valuable as Chevys to collectors,” Craig acknowledged,
“but this one is priceless.” He explained that the car had been owned by the famous racecar driver, Johnson. The car was
not for racing. Junior Johnson used it to haul moonshine. That occupation was a lot more lucrative in those days than
competing in the car races.
Although Fords had been the cars most bootleggers used in the early days of moonshine hauling, they required a lot
of work to put them in shape to outrun the cars driven by revenuers. “But,” explains Craig, “when the Chrysler letter
cars came along, they were all ready to go to the races or to haul bootleg whiskey. By 1960, the bootleggers had become
wiser, using more common looking sedans, and wouldn’t think of hauling in a 1940 Ford any longer. The 300-F came
equipped with everything standard that the bootleggers had been adding for years. They were indeed stock cars and
came equipped to outrun anything on the road or the track.”
Hauling illegal liquor could be backbreaking work. “At one time,” according to Craig, “Junior Johnson was known to
haul four trips a night every night of the week, seven nights a week, even when he was racing. It is said that is why there
are so many photos of him sleeping on top of his racecar.”
The Friday Jeep and the Junior Johnson Chrysler may be the cars Craig publically identifies as his favorites. But there is
another car he may cherish even more because of a family connection. He can spit out a description of his 1947 DeSoto
Custom without taking a breath. “New motor, new gas tank, interior, paint, whitewall tires, exhaust, brakes, semiautomatic and fluid drive, turn signals, back up light, push button radio, push button starter, and heater, everything works,
even the dash light.” After he finally took a breath, Craig explained that the DeSoto is like the family car he loved when
he was growing up in Hillsborough. If you ever get a chance to visit Craig’s automobile collection, do not pass it by. But
if you try to buy a car from him, here is what you will hear: “This one is not for sale.”

Following Thatcher’s 300D
By Merle Wolfer
My first sighting of the Thatcher 300D in a parking lot in Monterey, California.
Here Bruce Toelle in background looks at car.
It all started for me in Monterey, California at the joint meet
of the two Chrysler 300 clubs. I showed up there on June 5,
2012 and there in the parking lot was a nice looking 300D
coupe that looked original.
son having put the car away many years ago inside where
it remained just as it had been stored, right down to the
old Willard battery in the engine compartment.
The car was just an amazingly original car with just a bit
more than 30,000 miles on the odometer. It was really hard
to imagine that it had been hidden for so many years and had
remained this nice.
So what about Norm Thatcher and his racing career? It
almost seems like he burst onto the scene in 58 when he
had success at Bonneville with the 300D. But in truth he
was already a racer and active in racing.
I soon connected with owner Frank Atkinson who told the
story of his dad, (also Frank Atkinson), purchasing the car in
1959 from Norm Thatcher finding it in an ad in the paper.
The Atkinsons had owned the car since, with it passing down
from father to son and the
Also it seems that from 58 on when there seems to be
more information published about his racing, Thatcher
does seem to have favored Mopar cars.
If you’re an old guy like me and were reading the car
magazines of the late 50s you probably saw the ads that

At the Monterey meet Frank Atkinson had the car for sale.
It didn’t sell there but not too long afterward Josh Ackerman
heard about the car and rather promptly made the decision to
buy it.
Another view of the 300D
I have been wanting to do a story on this car since Josh bought
it but he has been too busy to help. Thus I have gathered as
many photos as I could find on the internet at different sites to
provide as much information on the car as I could get.
The car did race on the dry lakes in California as well as at
Bonneville in 1958 and then was sold in early 59 so that Norm
Thatcher could build a new car to race in 59.

but in my last communication with Josh he had taken the car for a short run.
I’m sure it has made additional progress since then.

My 59 Chrysler 300E convertible
by Joe Hensler
My wife and I fell in love with the late 50’s Exner Chrysler 300’s more than 25 years ago when we lived
in Chicago. Every year we would attend a car show at the Kane County Fairgrounds near St. Charles,
Illinois. A large contingent of 300’s would be there and they were stunning!
Time passed and we moved to Sacramento, California. In 1995 we had a 1958 Dodge Coronet 2 door
hardtop which we liked very much but decided that we would like a convertible instead. We sold the
Coronet and visited the Silver, Hot August Nights auction in Reno where we unsuccessfully bid on several cars. Before leaving Reno, we visited the National Automobile Museum where I purchased a copy
of “Old Cars Weekly” at the gift shop. On the way home to Sacramento, I discovered an ad in the magazine for a 1959 300E convertible. It was expensive but the thought of owning the car was intriguing so
we stopped and looked at the car in Nevada City on the way home.
The car was original and all there but had a few scrapes and needed paint and interior. It had sat in the
same garage for 22 years. With a little coaxing, it ran and barely drove. I consulted with my friend and
300 owner Bob Jasinski who encouraged me to buy it. We took it to Brian Moore Restorations who did
the body work and painted the car, which still looks great nearly 20 years later. We bought a complete
Gary Goers interior for the car, installed by Joe Anino’s upholstery. A little chrome work, a heavy cleaning and minor mechanical work and we had a great car.
We took the car to “Mopars in the Park” as its first outing. There I met two interesting people. The first
had been the owner of a similar Chrysler convertible. He told the story of them driving it down the
road one day when the hood latch, which is both the primary and secondary latch, unscrewed itself
from the hood. Of course, the hood flew-up, bent over the top of the windshield and knocked him out!
He said that if it hadn’t been that his wife was short, he would likely be dead! Needless to say, I keep a
strong cable on the hood attached to the radiator support as I have noticed that the latch can loosen
and back out.
The second person was Craig Watrous, a long-time 300 owner, now sadly deceased. Ironically, we didn’t
know Craig but he lived on the same street as we do, less than a mile away! Craig had bought my car off
of the street in Sutter Creek, California in 1973 for $300! Craig related that the car had been purchased
new off of the Showroom floor in San Francisco by two school teachers who used it as their weekend
car. They ultimately retired to Sutter Creek. Craig sold the car to a friend and fellow Pebble Beach
judge, Bill Bruchette who then stored the car in a third friends garage for the next 22 years.
We drive the car extensively and have even driven it to Phoenix for the 300 Club convention at the Barrett Jackson auction. We have installed a trailer hitch and tow our vintage travel trailer with it, making
quite a scene on the highway! We also take it to Monterey car week every year so that we can drive it in
our most fun event, the Pacific Grove Rally. The combination of its looks and train like horn really gets
the crowd going.
editors note:
Every year I make my annual pilgrimage to the Montery Peninsula area for what is known as “holy week”. I have been
fortunate to go for the last 5 years and hope to continue the tradition. I could not help but to notice Joe’s beautiful 300E
convert a couple years ago amongst the vast field of needlessly complex Italian and European marque’s. This story and
pictures are a result of a note in the windshield. Boy am I glad Joe was willing to step up. What a great car and story.
Thank you for sharing Joe. Bill Adams

300 Auction Results
Auction’s from July to
September 2014
1960 Chrysler 300-F SOLD at $143,000
RM Auctions, Plymouth MI on July 26, 2014
Chassis/VIN #8403143155 Odometer 5143 Convertible
10 year old paint still looks great, excellent exterior bright work,
engine compartment is tidy & clean, interior looks great with the
spaceship inspired dashboard.
Market Opinion
Our records show this car last sold pre bubble burst at Barrett Jackson, Scottsdale Jan, 2006 for $167,750 (SCM40281). That being
said the sell price then didn’t seem crazy even for 2006 dollars.
Looks to me like the new owner got a #2 car for #3 money, well
bought.
1961 Chrysler 300G SOLD at $61,600
Russo and Steele, Monterey CA on August 15, 2014
Chassis/VIN # 8413159853
Condition Description
413-ci V8, 2x4-bbl, auto. Very attractive big Mopar, with great
paint and good gaps. Doors open and shut well. Chrome tired in
some areas. Most interior parts original. Seats look like leather, but
I could be wrong. Some gentle creasing, but dash, carpets and door
panels look unworn. Engine very authentic and mean, with
cross ram setup. Sounds amazing and very quiet.
Market Opinion
A no-reserve car, this sold for a relative bargain. Not a bad deal for
the money, and will run circles around the GM and Ford stuff.
1956 Chrysler 300 B NOT SOLD at $60,000
Lucky Collector Car Auctions, Tacoma WA on August 31, 2014
Chassis/VIN # 3N561373 Odometer 31870
354-ci V8, 2x4-bbl, auto. Stunning in a shade of ivory, wide whites on chrome
wire wheels. Single quality repaint in original color despite keeping windows-in and chrome-on. Front lettering is missing chrome “S” and “R.” Nice
front bumper badly dimpled by over-torqued bolts. Interior appears original
and in fine condition (save dull threshold plates), complete dash with clear
lenses, push-buttons for automatic trans. Powered by clean, stock, and fabled
354-ci “Hemi” (355 hp) crowned with dual quads under correct air cleaner.
Market Opinion One of 1102 produced for ‘56, this was a one-owner car
claimed to have been stored since 1958. This gives one pause regarding the
amount of recommissioning done, and what else needs attention. That said, it
started, moved and stopped without drama. I’d prefer one with the rare Collatti manual, but this time capsule was a rare find with correctable nits. With
no “The reserve is off!” announcement, seller took it home.

383-ci V8, 2-bbl, auto. Factory a/c and power driver’s seat. Verified

configuration in recent years. Expert bare-body repaint. All brightwork replated or polished when off the car. Vinyl lettering font is
pretty close to original. All-new top, seats, door panels, carpeting,
and console vinyl. Exceptionally clean and authentically detailed
under the hood.
Market Opinion

with a 303-hp 383 big block and TorqueFlite automatic. They also
had a unique trim code, due to the center console. With a claimed
$34k in receipts for just parts—plus $3k in recent tune-up costs and
tweaks for auction—it rightfully deserves a bit more than this, but
that may be pushing it—Barrett-Jackson reported it sold for $27,500
at Scottsdale in January (ACC# 240601).

Mecum Auctions, Monterey CA on August 16, 2014

There was no analysis of this car by the magazine. However, I was
able to view it and it needed a full restoration but apeared to be a
very nice driver and complete. Would like to know if it sold after
the auction or since. Bill Adams

ebay auction results
Again, thanks to Keith Martin and ebay, I am able to cut and paste the ebay auction results from ebay
from July 14 to Sept 14. If anyone would like to see the details of each auction, go to collectorcarpricetracker.com/auctions and do a search for Chrysler 300’s. It will pull up the list and you can see what
happened. Sometimes the car or part did not sell or you would like to see the description. For instance,
one that stands out immediately is a parts car 300D that sold for 416.00. Well it is a 300B actually, extremely rusty and no motor or trans. But everything else is there. Looks like there is not a good piece
of sheet metal but surely the dash, interior and other parts are worth more than 416 bucks and hopefully went to help restore someone’s B.

Consultants’ Corner
Electronic Ignition For Your Early 300
By Merle Wolfer
I know that some of you like to use electric ignition in your early 300s for its dependability. So some of you have
converted your old distributor to the Pertronix system to get the results that you have wanted. I have also heard
some grumbling from those who have made the switch and have had problems that sent them back to the original
ignition.
If you have a hemi car, (55 thru 58), the best elctronic ignition is to use the system that you buy from Chrysler. If
you use this system and ever have a problem you can take it to any dealer and they can service it. So here it is and
how to do it.
Shown above is the kit from Chrysler’s Performance Parts Catalog. For the early hemi you need the package
shown above for the 273-318-340-360. These distributors mount at the rear of the engine and rotate the same as
the early hemi. If your car collection includes an early Plymouth 318 or a Dodge or DeSoto hemi this kit will also
work for you.
Here is the secret:
This adapter lengthens the distributor shaft of the new distributor to fit the old engine. You get this with appropriate instructions. You cut off the end of the new distributor shaft, insert it in the adapter, drill a hole for the pin,
insert the pin and you are ready to go.
You get the part and instructions for $29 from:

Two 1956 300Bs, Both cars are restoration projects; guaranteed
complete, needing only minor body-work, paint, new interiors,
new chrome, and drivetrain & brakes rebuilt. Both come with mint
grills, and horn rings. With the spare parts I have collected for 25
years, both cars can be rebuild with all three of the prime factory
options of; Torqueflight transmissions (3 speed automatic) factory
air conditioning; and spoked wheels. Very few 300 B’s have all three.
Both cars have build-sheets. Both have valve-covers, pan, & batwing air filters, hot-tanked and sprayed with ‘chrome yellow’ primer.
I have owned these cars about 30 years and never got around to
restoring them. During this time they have been stored in sheds in
Alpine, Ca., at 2000’ elevation
Restored, these cars are currently being sold at around $80,000.
INDIVIDUAL CAR DETAILS

Originally white. Partial repaint 30 years ago, parked when water
pump began to leak and the carb was not pumping. This car had
minor front-end wreck, and previous owner replaced the front clip
with a ‘55, and removed the ‘B’ engine. I have all correct front-clip
chrome for B and have bought the dual-quad set-up and batwing
